Luka Doncic Breaks Down His 73 Point Masterpiece and The One Rule Change That Could’ve Prevented It

Luka Doncic Breaks Down His 73 Point Masterpiece and The One Rule Change That Could’ve Prevented It

Last time you were on the Pod you said that scoring 30 in the NBA was hold on you said scoring 30 in the NBA was way easier than scoring in Europe and a lot of people have co-signed that I’m not here to dispute that take at all the

Other night you had 73 against the Hawks and I’m gonna be honest with you I’ve rewatched the 25 made baskets like five times and to some degree it did look easy did that 73 feel easy oh no no no definitely not I mean everybody say my game looks easy it’s not easy

Trust me but when I said that a lot of people didn’t agree me agree with me uh it was like two three years ago yeah but I think now they starting to agree more and more but I always say it’s because the rules last minutes uh the three point

The three seconds in the pain and is huge I don’t think people realize how huge that is uh because you know when I’m isoing I watch the defender in the pain so he he got to go out at some point so when he he’s going out I try to

Attack so that’s a huge difference but no it wasn’t easy scoring 73 you brought that up last time that low man as he’s trying to cleanse himself um the weak side guy right generally speaking he’s not going to be on the balls side but that weak side guy is he’s trying to

Cleanse himself uh watching him and I was watching some film of LeBron the other day he does a really good job with that too um I do ask more about the 73o game but since you brought it up and the rules no no no no no you brought up the

Rules you brought up the rules and I’m curious because one of the things you mentioned last time was the physicality in Europe it wasn’t just the rules it wasn’t kind of how those in Europe the referees allow a little bit more flopping is generally not given to the

Offensive player do you think and I don’t know how familiar you are with like the ’90s era hand-checking do you think hand checking would have an like an impediment on offenses like would it matter what do you mean like hand cheing the ability just like I’m not American

Explain a little bit the rule was you couldn’t like keep your hand on someone but you could sort of put your hand on put your hand off put your hand on put your hand off so as somebody’s sort of attacking only in the scoring area not necessar all over the floor you can

Still do that I I agree oh yeah 100% agree my my argument right now my argument right now is bring back hand checking you know what hand checking is going to do it’s going to lead to more shooting fouls yeah because offensive players are so smart now the second I

Was I was calling a game the other night with ke Kevin Durant and Mel Bridges was deing up legally had his hands on him and once he put his like hand out and Kevin could get into his shooting motion he just went into a shooting motion I mean the amount of offensive Talent

There is in the league right now is just insane I don’t think people really real realize it how much talent offensively there is and then again you have some really great great defensive players that you know uh like yesterday I had I really have to give credit to Claxton he

Was he’s a five and he was even picking me full court he was really guarding me good so you know you have a lot of great great defensive player too it’s interesting from my vantage point because I’m I get to call games I’m calling a game later tonight actually

It’s why I’m dressed like this uh but from from my vantage point when I watch games on TV there’s a feeling of uh not necessarily non physicality but you don’t quite capture it when you’re sitting up close when I call a game game looks more physical it just does and and

So the other the other thing I there’s a there’s a clip in the second half uh you’re driving and there’s two Defenders one guy’s like kind of at the nail one guy’s kind of helping in off the wing and you do the low pull through and initially they didn’t call it a good

Basket you you make the shot they eventually reversed it and you got the N1 but that move is another move where like James Harden was the first kind of to do it I just I I I think with spacing and with talent I don’t think hand

Checking is g to have that big of a difference to your point about the defense of 3 seconds I think that would oh that would 100% but the hand checking like you said I don’t think so because that one they started stop calling that

A lot now I mean for me the low the low pull throw yeah I think they they stop more and more they stopping that calling that well the other thing is I was going to say is when I when I watch you you play a lot out out of like a split

Stance do you know what I mean by that like when you’re up top in ISO you play out of a split stance and a lot of times you use that left to right dribble between the legs to attack the top leg and get to your right hand I would say

What do you think it is half the time more than half the time somebody puts their hands on you immediately as soon as you go to that move and it’s it’s rarely called you get it sometimes but it’s rarely called yeah but yeah I do that a lot it’s just you know my

Stepback to the left uh but I mean I just take what defense give me they send me left I’ll go left they send me right I’ll go right like you know I have I think I have a couple moves in me uh I’m trying to do the Sham God in in one

You’re trying to bring out the Sham God that is good I they’ll probably steal it right after I do this um going going back to that 73p point game you use this a lot and when we called opening night in San Antonio you had one of the best

Decelerations that I’ve seen bunch of guys are doing this now it’s become it’s become so important on drives right to be able to desell let the defense fly by or draw a foul you had two against at land off the right leg bank shot um how did you sort of develop that part

Of your game because I’m I’m curious you I watched you work out when I was your teammate you you go at a certain speed in your workouts but the full speed to the Dell how much you practicing that when did you develop that I didn’t practice that that just

I I just call it the slow step you know uh I remember one day I tried to teach doto you try to tell your story FY Smith yeah I say you just got to do the slow step you know you gota go into Defender a little bit and then just slow

Step wait till he he’s going to jump and if he don’t jump you just go up so just I don’t know maybe it’s the IQ I don’t know but I never really practiced that one you don’t practice that all right not that one it’s just a natural thing

Which is why I’m so jealous of you I think just your ability to just do things on the Fly you and Joelle are like the two guys that I played with why you jealous I’m because I could never do that I don’t have the I don’t have the gift I

Remember one time I was working out and my trainer tried to like it was a very specific gather to a Euro and I did it like 12 times is there a video no there’s no video because I don’t have I’ve never had cameras in in the gym I

Know you don’t but at some point I was just like it dude we’re not doing this I’m I’m gonna use this twice in a yeah I mean you do the things you’re good at yeah uh by the way you went into that Atlanta game I think you still are

But you’re the most blitzed player in the NBA Atlanta uh blitzes the most in the NBA they only blitzed you uh eight times the entire game three of which came in the last five minutes and only twice in the first half when you had 41 when teams aren’t blitzing you because

It’s a night toight occurrence that you get multiple blitzes teams aren’t blitzing you what is your sort of mindset around scoring versus playmaking uh I think when they don’t Blitz it depends if they play like we call it channel one if the big is just in the

Drop uh there’s a lot of playmaking there uh the clap and the old Gort screen it’s it’s efficient uh but then if they switch you know I just trying to go downhill I know there’s there’s going to be always a low man uh sometimes I just stagger a little

Bit on the threes on the step backs uh but I I gotta be more downhill downhill because you know I can get downhill a lot and when we touch the pain when I touch the pain I think our team is and bass is scoring you brought up the Gort

Toot screen um let me I I want to explain this Gortat screen so the the big is in a drop yep all right you turn the corner on the pick yes your Defender behind you yeah the roller yeah you put them in jail the roller then instead of

Rolling to the basket rolls into the defender and drop coverage and essentially sets the Little Brush screen and sometimes they they they will fully set the screen first basket of the Atlanta game Derek Lively did that on capella we still got work Derk Lively on

That one you still got to work with him on that one who’s who who’s have you played pick and roll with in Dallas that has done that well uh Dwight PA Dwight Maxi uh yeah those two I think those two Holmes did it a couple times uh but

Before who I play with you gotta get you gotta get D you gotta get Derek Chris christops really wasn’t doing it because he he wasn’t he was for he was popping yeah you gotta get Derrick doing that more yeah especially against he’s 19 he

Got a lot he’s got a lot of way to learn

  1. We get into so much with Luka from Jalen Brunson to Devin Booker and more. Plus, THE DRAFT IS BACK. Yep, we're drafting with Jalen Williams in this episode so be sure to subscribe if you haven't. We'll see you bright and early. Cheers.

  2. the reason why many people including me saw in todays game soft or defense is much weaker is because of refs bs calls, almost all player shot 3 in todays game, and ofc the hand checking. tho i agree players with great offensive ability like luka or kd won’t be affected by that rules no matter of what era cuz they are just that good.

  3. I feel like Luka is someone who hand checking wouldn't affect as much tbh
Sure it would slow him down a little but yeah

  4. Luka is so funny without trying just like his game. League's future couldn't be in better hands let's see that suns mavs playoff series again

  5. Reddick is just company man… He didnt bring up real issue which is complete disregard of ball handling rules. Luka constantly carries the ball, thats basis of his game, every bounce he pauses and defender has no clue is he gathering the ball or is continuing the dribble. Then he pivots around one leg but he is cornered he lifts it and goes other way. Then there is 3step traveling. He goes for the ordinary 2step but again when he sees he will get defended just adds another step and defender just flies by. This isnt just him it has slowly spread over the league and every major player exploits these lack of rule enforcment. The lifting of the pivot annoys me the most because it really makes defense look foolish when in realitt they cornered the guy and shut him down but they can just lift that leg and go other way.

  6. JJ saying this generation is better compared to guys 20-30 years ago never gets old. My internet speed now is a lot faster than my dial up modem. So what? The NBA sucks now, it’s boring to watch. This is the issue.

  7. If they called carrying and traveling that would eliminate most of the offensive talent in the league. But the 3 second rule would probably be enough. That was a rule created for Shaq and we have nothing in the league like that anymore.

  8. I want to point this out for younger players looking to develop moreso than to call out Luka. At 6:20 when Luka says that he didn't practice going full speed to deceleration, he is lying. There's a detailed section in the book The Comfort Crisis that highlights how the founder of P3 worked with a 15 y.o. Doncic and gave him the feedback that he should develop his game based on what he said he never practice. Exact quote from book, "Elliott's advice: Luka should develop his game around plays where he sprints forward, stops abruptly, and shoots." It's on page 33.

I want people to realize that outside of the height and length, most of these guys work their asses of. Anyone trying to downplay a skill and act as if they didn't put in thousands of hours to develop it is likely being dishonest.

  9. I like luka gave claxton his props, cuz i was watching & nick played pretty well on him

  10. Luka talking about how Lively only 19 years old while Luka's only 24 talking like a 10 year vet lol

  11. In skills and size, Doncic has the profile of a near-perfect NBA offensive player and perfection might just be a few percentage points of long-range accuracy away. With a 6-foot-7 frame, the vision of an owl and a magician's sleight of hand, Doncic can demoralize a defense any which way from any spot on the floor.

  12. JJ's take on hand checking helps me understand why he thinks MJ and Bird were playing against plumbers. Hand checking wasn't prevalent for driving offensive players. It was for top of the key. 3 point shooting was WAY harder bc of hand checking and that's why the best shooters in the 90s and 80s were 6"6+ outside of a VERY select few. Luka will still be good I THINK, but those hand checks at the top are hard

Imagine getting jabbed in the body right before you decide to shoot, nobody is prepared for that and foul isn't going be called

  13. 1950 you had to put the ball in the bucket. 2024 you have to put the ball in the bucket. Stop this narrative that scoring is easier. Talent is flat out just better and it will only get better.

  14. JJ tells Luka that watching the game in person it looks more physical, but when Mad Dog told JJ that exact same thing he said he was crazy.

    Why the dishonesty?

  15. I’ve played this game at a pretty high level for a long time and I don’t need to see it up close to know how physical and quick it is. HOWEVER, one night I smoked a J and while watching it was like I was watching the game in slow motion but could see every detail and just how blazing quick/physical the game is. It was quite an eye opening experience. 🤣🤣🤣

  16. Mavs made some good moves & they getting back healthy with Luka running the show. I have to see playoff Luka & Ky 🤞🏻

  17. This is such a great show for kids to learn from. With the clips of the game and jj remembering it???

    Frigging awesome

  18. Would be curious on JJ’s thoughts if the NBA should reduce the size of the court. Give defenders a chance to help and recover as well as be more aggressive

  19. Why would Devin Booker trash talk someone who dominated the Euroleague at 16 years of age? Probably everyone in Europe knew when Booker said "The Luka Special" was a huge mistake.

  20. Either JJ is truly clueless of what handchecking is or he's being dishonest about it. "Back in the day" handchecking wasn't just "putting your hands on someone" like you're playing tag, it was putting your hand on someone AND FORCEFULLY pushing them away like a shopping cart with uneven wheels to control where the ballhandler goes. Handchecking technically still exists, it was never removed. What the NBA did back in 2004 was nerf it to a degree that it's virtually useless.

If this pre-nerfed handchecking really still existed today, you'd still see a lot like really A LOT of players develop a habit of turning their backs to the basket like they're doing post up moves even for just bringing the ball up, or even when they're just in the perimeter executing their plays. If I were the commissioner I would bring this "pre-nerfed handchecking" back, I mean at this point the players are so skilled in handling the ball that they won't be bothered by someone pushing them while they're moving with the ball, right? And it's not like anyone can "pre-nerf handcheck" anyway, you'd still need to have good defensive skills to even be able to pre-nerf handcheck properly, so it's probably not that big of a deal if the NBA were to just revert handchecking back to what it was, right?
