Alec Burks who returns to New York in a deal that sends four players including Evan forer’s expiring contract and two second round picks to the Detroit Pistons how much sense did this make for New York how much better are they now made all the sense in the world given

That the Knicks have been the best team in the NBA in 2024 ever since they traded for ogn and Obi and they didn’t touch the core of their roster or any of their best assets as far as young players they have a number of future first round picks they held on to uh

This has been as good as any team in the league with anobi Randall and Brunson in the lineup and to add two versatile offensive players um I think the talk this week guys was can they get one of these guys can they get Alec Burks or buan bogdanovich the fact that they got

Both of them without touching the core their roster speaks to the quality of work that Leon Rose and his front office have done in New York without touching the core of the roster or any of those first round picks yeah listen uh to me

This is what I’d call GM 101 I mean I I I just think Leon Rose has done as great a job as you can possibly imagine I mean think of it this way as well this is a team that we all consider to be an elite team a a a a Eastern Conference

Contending team they don’t have any number one picks like you know Julius rold I think was a seventh pick Jaylen Bronson wi the second round I mean they have went out and identified pieces that fit you know no one saw Jaylen Brunson becoming what he’s become we all thought

He was really good and we’re shocked that Dallas didn’t think so um but to look at him now this guy in my estimation he’s an all NBA caliber player like Julius randle’s been an all NBA caliber player and so then to be able to go out and fit the pieces around

Him to have the patience to not just Chase it and then allow some of the deals that have transpired this season to kind of come to you into Ryan’s point they still have the flexibility with all the first round picks that they’re going to have moving forward so there’s still

Possibilities for them to improve uh just an an outright home run for what the Knicks have been able to done and really excited to see how that group looks together once they’re and this deliberate strategic approach over the last couple of years is so different

From what we saw from the Knicks over so many years where they would go after the Big Shiny splashy thing and it didn’t always work obviously for New York uh Philadelphia 76ers made themselves a better three-point shooting team for certain with the acquisition of Buddy heeld

Who’s hit more threes over the last five seasons than any player in the NBA he’s on an expiring deal Pacers get back Marcus Morris senior who was later moved to San anonio and Furon cork as well as three second round picks and as great as I love what the Knicks have done this

Move might have even more impact because they’ve already got two established stars and then to be able to go get a guy as consistent as shooting the basketball as buddy Hill who’s kind of a plug-and play guy for me Ryan I think this was a great move for the Sixers I

Agree with that his ability to play with or without embiid I think that they made this move more to have him play with embiid when embiid’s back in the lineup um but he is is an efficient catch and shoot player and I think that’s what you need Matt when you have two ball

Dominant superstars in Joel embiid and Tyrese Maxi you need a guy who will keep defenses honest can catch and shoot and the other thing I like about this from Philadelphia’s perspective is heeld is an unrestricted free agent so they can see how it goes over the last 30 games

And into the playoffs um if he plays well and they want to resign him they can do that if it doesn’t work out great then they can let them walk and use their cap space to sign somebody else Philly is position to have as much salary cap space as team and free agency

Uh and that is with their two stars embiid and Maxi locked in what if anything does this say to you about Philly Management’s belief about embiid returning this season not that much and and the reason I say that is because I think this is a good move regardless of

Whether embiid returns I’m sure they hope he returns obviously they do but um buddy hee is you know a guy that can help them stay competitive they haven’t been very competitive frankly they’ve won 20 to 25% of their games without embiid they have won 76% of the games

With embiid in the lineup so um you know buddy may help them stay afloat but I think this is more of a let’s see how buddy fits with Tyrese Maxi there’s always room for shooting as as you know Greg every coach in the league you ask

Him what’s the number one one thing they want offensively they want more shooting and floor spacing and quietly buddy heeld has put up numbers right up there behind Steph Curry as one of the most prolific three-point Shooters in the last decade in the NBA in terms of

Efficiency and volume yeah I think big picture this was a great move whether MB comes back or not because they they really haven’t had a a guy that the shooter the caliber of Buddy Hill on that roster and you think about the way Maxi shoots it boy that that could be a

Potent backfield back court well Dallas loves the three and they were active on trade deadline day as well they began the day eighth in the Western Conference picked up a couple of big men um the bigger of the two Daniel gaffard from the Washington Wizard sending out ran Holmes and unspecified by draft

Compensation homes has not been playing for Dallas meanwhile PJ Washington arrives via the Charlotte Hornets in a deal that sends back Grant Williams remember they just signed in the off season and Sharpshooters Seth Curry as well as a 2027 first round pick what do you think the about what the Mavericks were able

To do I I actually love their moves because they addressed a couple issues one I think they got far more athletic and they also brought in more size that they’re going to have better I think POS positional ability from a defensive standpoint I think the three-point shooting improves even though

Statistically uh PJ Tucker had I mean PJ hadn’t shot it great PJ Washington this year historically he’s a better shooter than he’s been and you put him with Luca and Kyrie his shot quality is going to go up as well and Gafford I really like lely’s been a breath of fresh air for

Them but he gives them another big which gives him the versatility gives him some shot blocking some Rim protection and and finishing he’s going to put pressure on that Rim offensively with the lob threat with Luca and Kyrie so I really like their moves and sometimes Ryan

These are the kinds of moves that can get you over the hump because they’ve got two Dynamic Bonafide Stars offensively now I think they’ve improved defensively as well I agree with that Greg and when I look at this Mavericks roster I think their back court was good enough to compete with anybody Luca

Donic Kyrie Irving Tim Hardway Jr but on the front line that that’s not good enough that was not good enough that was not a championship contending team uh so now with with keeping uh likely who’s played very well as you mentioned he’s been in and out of the lineup though

Adding Daniel Gafford who can start or probably becomes the best backup in the league if he’s coming off the bench and PJ Washington replacing Grant Williams um Grant Williams got off to a good start in Dallas but hasn’t played as well lately he’s in year one of a 4-year

$53 million contract uh so kudos to Nico Harrison in the front office in Dallas for realizing that this isn’t the best fit Washington’s on a good deal and that’s another thing I like about it from a front offers perspective Ive both of these guys Daniel Gafford and PJ

Washington are in their mid 20s they’re under team control under contract for the next few years which should be in their Prime um but this has to work in Dallas and the reason I say that Mt is because now they’ve traded all their first round picks they they can trade in

The short term so they’re locked into this core uh we’ll see if it’s good enough to help them Ascend the ladder in the Western Conference your point about Washington and the three-point shooting is a good one he’s at 32% plus right now with Charlotte but historically a 30 6%
