[TMZ Sports] Police documents reveal that Haywood Highsmith was driving at an estimated 45 MPH in a 40 MPH zone when he hit a pedestrian from behind. The pedestrian appeared to be pushing a stalled car that did not have its lights on, leading to Highsmith being unable to stop in time.

Unfortunate situation all around but I thought it was important to point out that Highsmith wasn’t necessarily driving recklessly like similar situations we see in sports these days

Thats 72 Kilometres an hour for those who don’t use miles

People were joking about 45 in a 40. Turns out they were right.

    Car accidents suck

  3. K1ngCrimsn

Its always TMZ that breaks this kind of shit

  4. nbaistheworst

I wonder how the police “estimated” his speed at 45, about 11% over the limit. My guess is that it was to support the careless and negligent driving citation.

  5. jawntothefuture

honestly a tough situation…can’t blame Haywood too much if he couldn’t see the car in front of him

Neither person (pusher or driver of broken car) was smart enough to call 911 or suggest putting the flashers on on another car behind them or something? Come on people, use your head for something if you’re getting out of a car on a major road

Damn man just a very unfortunate set of events, prayers to the person who was injured and their family

People really want to put the blame on Highsmith, but if you’re driving late at night and it’s dark out, your car breaks down and your lights aren’t working, the absolute last thing you should do is get out of your car and try pushing it down the road.

Everyone buy some flares or some reflective warnings signs from Amazon. They’re like 15 bucks and they can save your life

Not to be victim blaming but pushing your car while on the road with no lights on is incredibly stupid and I imagine the person would’ve been hit sooner or later

Jeez when I went 45 in a 40 I had a guy cut me off break check me and get out of his car and try to fight me for going too slow. Horrible accident for all parties involved

If your car stalls in the .middle of the road and you’re on a busy road you turn your blinkers on and either stay in the car or if you can safely get yourself to the side of the road.

Don’t try to push your car off the road if it’s dark or traffic is heavy by yourself, wait for assistance with proper flashing lights.

On one hand there’s an entire button on your car for emergency lights so it seems kinda ridiculous to just be out there in the dark. On the other hand you gotta really be zoned out to not notice the silhouette of a human being behind a car.

45 in a 40 is absolutely nothing. Sucks that this happened but I don’t see any reason to put the blame on him.

45 in a 40 is nothing, that could literally be an error in the Speedo for all intents and purposes. Just a series of unfortunate and tragic accidents.

Feel awful for everyone here, obviously the pedestrian who got their leg amputated but that’s got to be tough for highsmith to deal with. Only being 5 mph over is pretty much a given, if anything that is on the slow side of the flow of traffic in a lot of places.

What did he do wrong to be cited? Normal speed, not intoxicated, in his lane of travel, not being wreck-less, and accidentally hits a non-lit vehicle stopped in the middle of the road? Sounds like the definition of “accident”.

  18. dirkslance

I feel like this could’ve happened to any of us. Not saying that makes it better or worse for Highsmith. The situation just really sucks.

45 in a 40, no sign of intoxication, this just sounds like an unfortunate situation. People need to give this kid a break

  20. Edzardo99

45 in a 40 is actually under the speed limit where I’m from.

  21. SituationNo1061

    45 in a 40 let’s point out he was…………but we know what it is.🤦🏾‍♂️🌎🤡💩

  22. JanethDoeth

‘Going 45 in a 40’….so basically he was driving the speed limit.

  23. AutographedSnorkel

I’m not sure how they determined he was going 45 in a 40.

  24. ImanShumpertplus

45 in a 40 in miami is basically parking, feel bad for all involved

What concerns me for Highsmith is this happened in Florida. Florida has the highest incarceration rate per capita of any state in the country, and the number two income producer for the state is incarceration (overtook citrus for number two). Florida loves locking people up over things more trivial than this. He’s in my prayers, but the Florida justice system is a monster.

**NOBODY** wants to victim blame….but please use your “flashers” when you’re parked somewhere you shouldn’t be or when it’s at night.
