Is the most interesting game in the world oh I thought we I thought we would lead off with the Chiefs defeating the 49ers 25 to 22 a much more a much more riveting riveting Sports Ball Match take your Victory lap no there’s no Victory lap that was a wild and insane game and

Like it’s just absolutely perfect that the next sporting event I watch is the Mavericks playing the Wizards and just I mean was it was horrendous um a horrendous win and and I it count as wins all the same they do count as wins all the same and so I’d

Kind of kind of talked myself into earlier today I was like man we’re g to come in we’re gonna beat the pants off the Wizards and we’re GNA have a great game and then I’m going to do a live show after the fact with the fans and

Now I don’t want to do any of those things because that game was just such a it was a hex and and I I don’t really know how to properly contextualize it so can can you kind of walk us through the game since I think you had a better view

Than I did because I was doing my kids bedtime for the first quarter no first half almost yeah I mean really it was just a sense of both teams shot the ball very poorly almost all night um the Wizards ended up finishing seven of 32

From three the Mavs were nine of 36 and the Mavs nine of 36 number is an improvement considering they made I think two or three three-pointers in the four they made four three-pointers in the fourth quarter I think they were four of nine from three in the fourth so

They were not well and the Wizards I believe were 0 for nine um so yeah it was just a case of you’re just watching the game and you’re like are the Mavericks gonna figure this out because this wasn’t this wasn’t a game where it’s like ah what are you gonna do the

Other team’s hot uh just one of those nights it was no the Wizards were not playing great basketball I mean they were shoot they were hovering between 42 and 43% from the floor almost the entire game their only offense um was Denny avvia basically attacking Daniel Gafford

In the pick and roll and that was working pretty well but outside of that they really did not have anything going on the offensive end almost all of their offense was because the Mavericks had turnovers and Miss shots and long rebounds um the Wizards had 20 fast break points and the Mavericks stopped

Turning the ball over in the fourth quarter started making shots and the Wizards were like oh like like oh no like what do we do now and they scored 16 points in the fourth quarter when they didn’t have easy runouts that the Mavericks basically gift wrapped in them I mean there were

So many ridiculous offensive rebounds in that first half where yeah this happens in like a game there were a lot of opportunities for offensive rebounds in this game well there were so many ones where it’s like it felt like an ugly game a 21 where you’re playing against

Somebody who just doesn’t have any [ __ ] touch and the ball bounces not like off the rim and like down where you are cuz you’re boxing out it bounces like s feet away towards the middle of the key and that just kept happening on repeat and then Marvin baggley would

Bully someone or I mean there was one possession I mean we they they got harp to say that that Marvin Bagley is a good rebounder no he’s not he Marvin Bagley is a tremendous misuse of athletic talent and and the Mavericks made him look functional for a while and I you’re

Going to have games like this and I think what’s so damn frustra in for for people who are just Avid every game Watchers is just there’s no reason to have a game quite this ugly but they they buckled down when it really mattered when it really really mattered

And that is is something that’s nice to see and I gotta be honest with with the crowd okay I’m just gonna show everybody this because I’m an idiot um I I I spent the better part of the last four minutes of the game trying to figure out how to

Work Tik Tock and and I made this incredibly stupid thing I’m going to share with oh you actually made that I thought you oh no I made this so so I missed I’m just gonna put it on real quick here and we’re just gonna go live here

For yes that beat ah I don’t know if this even comes through on the video but it’s like a 7-second Tik Tok it’s the dumbest thing ever but uh I thought I was the king of shitty Mavs memes from Microsoft Paint you took my title there I think

I that’s good though I don’t want to make this a butt kid but like let’s just say let’s just say this guys when you trade for two brand new players a small forward power forward and a center there is zero reason in any level of the Multiverse for you to play Kyrie

Irving Tim Hardway Jr and Jaden Hardy at the same time firable coaching offense like horrible horrible I mean Tim is one thing like I I don’t know how to talk about Tim like his dad was there and he shot bad and it’s just it’s so stupid like the Mavericks tried to lose

That game and they still couldn’t lose that game and that’s that’s the part that I will probably Circle back to in that are they a top three seed in the west like our guy Matthew Phillips seems to think they are no are they a playing team after tonight even though it was a

Sloggy ass Victory I don’t think they are I think they’re a top six team I I think this game sort of made me there there’s something about the ugliness of it that gave me like a bit of not like hope but like a sense of like okay they can pull

Out of tail spins whereas prior to this game there have been Tail Spin that they just couldn’t come out of yeah I mean even though they did shoot better in the fourth quarter they still only made 25% of their threes and how often as this Mavericks team won games in the last

Three years when they’re shooting 25% from three uh the Mavericks scored 64 points in the paint so that’s back-to-back games of 60 plus points in the paint since this trade which means they’re figuring out new ways to win because they have a different roster um they have guys that are capable of doing

Things that aren’t just standstill spot up shooting threes I mean look at PJ Washington didn’t I mean he missed all five of his threes they’re mostly open which is kind of continuing this you kept telling me how good his shot looks that thing came off the rim like I think

His form looks good but he is not shooting well uh there he’s he’s been in like a two-year Funk from three but this game kind of proved my point with him in that I don’t really care I mean he needs to not go over five from three obviously

Um because against teams that aren’t the Wizards that’s gonna hurt you but it’s pretty obvious that like a 34% let’s just say 34% shooter from three that can do stuff with the ball um that can be a little bit more versatile be a little bit more well-rounded versus

A standstill spot up 38% three-point shooter that that has to basically have everything spoonfed for them like I feel like this was a good example of of why the former matters a lot more in the NBA now as teams are trying to run these guys off the line more than ever before

So like yeah PJ didn’t shoot well but you know still managed to he didn’t he only score nine points but he still he shot well from two he was basically like four he had six in the inside the arc him him and and Daniel Gafford have really strong senses of mismatches and

When to cut and when to sort of be at The Rim um P Luca found PJ I’m pretty sure it PJ for like just an easy Layin It was like a duck in and Luca was almost at half court and just sort of placed it exactly where PJ could C catch

It and laid it right in and and like the Mavericks haven’t had anybody ever that could do that with Luca like really I mean it’s at least is a forward yeah at Leisa is a you know you got your your DeAndre Jordans and people like that of

The world who do it but like a small forward ducking in like that that just like Dorian never did that like do you remember the first uh Jason kid coach game when Doran had two post-ups and he had had one post up the previous season yeah sorry I don’t know just came

To mind no but it just I mean you know all respect to Dorian he’s one of those standstill you know spot up guys like it just goes to show you know if you can do the impact the game in other ways besides just shooting threes that just goes a long way to

Winning these kind of games when you don’t have the three-pointer um you know Gafford was okay uh I mean people are gonna be like okay you like he had 16 17 and five and I feel like this was kind of the full Gafford experience where he had monster numbers and had some really

Twitter feed someone was like could he does he know how to pass yeah he had eight I think he had eight rebounds in the first quarter so he finishes with 16 17 boards seven offensive rebounds two assists two steals five blocks two turnovers seven of 13 from the floor so

Kind of like a really because you think of you know Gafford I don’t know if gafford’s Miss six shots in a game this season like there’s no way he doing the like missing his own shot getting the rebound thing yeah he was for sure um Josh is sorry just saw fun comment about

My water bottle that Mak it does kind of look like Cartman now that I see it that’s that’s a good comment thanks everyone um but yeah he was I mean he put up numbers he wasn’t I mean look 16 17 five blocks you know even with some

Of the like you still take that production because were were getting minutes from their bigs that like weren’t doing anything at the rim and also weren’t you know putting up numbers like eventually you put up that many numbers the numbers are numbers like that’s pretty good um but you saw why

You know the his defensive efficiency count of at The Rim is not great um not that he’s a bad rim protector so to speak when he contests shots he is good but there are instances where teams can get him out of position get him going one way falling for fake you know

Getting him in in space uh in the paint near the free throw line like forcing him to make decisions that’s where he can struggle a little bit and I thought Avia kind of really picked him apart in the pick and roll forcing him you know kind of using head fakes ball fakes

Hesitations to to kind of throw him off guard and and Washington kind of I mean the Wizards that was their only offense when Gafford was on the floor they really attacked him now he got them back a couple times he had five blocks so like you know he’s not a left-handed

Like not for nothing and if if you’ve even played like pickup basketball and like if you’ve ever get a block with your off arm like your non-dominant hand it feels so amazing and he had one with his left like at the peak I just I like watching him block

Shots he’s got really nice timing in that regard yeah for sure but yeah and you know this was a game that I felt like was good but also kind of indicated like I think he needs to be the backup when Lively gets back because I you know

Definitely there was some chatter in the fan base that’s like wait is Gafford going to be the starter and like I understand that Lively’s a 20-year- old rookie now he just turned 20 but I think Lively Lively’s ability to protect the rim a little bit better stay in better

Positioning I think is already a little bit better than where Gafford is his passing in the short rle is better than Gafford Gafford had two turnovers and kind of had tunnel vision when he caught the ball uh when Luca got doubled or out of the pick and roll and just kind of

Put some shots up that’s why he missed six shots he took some attempts that were some non- dunk that that didn’t fall for him um and that’s another thing like I TR like I think Lively has really shown this season he’s really good catching the ball near the free throw

Line maybe a little bit inside the free throw line when Luca get BL Blitz in the pick and roll and like taking a hard dribble pivot a drop step finishing even if it’s not a dunk like I think Lively has earned the benefit of out there to

Keep keep that going so again not bad like you know it’s not critical like the point is you can play one of these dudes for 48 minutes you get either him like what an awesome problem right exactly give me this problem where I just I instead it’s

Dwight pal who’s also not guarding the rim and has three rebounds in and I don’t like they they had to use maxi in the backup five roll again tonight and I just can’t handle it sometimes because he just doesn’t have the lateral quickness and the like he’s a great helps side

Like rotations in the fourth quarter yeah and the rotation stuff is good but like if he’s getting attacked off the dribble he is fried chicken and I I just I don’t want to it’s not fair to him I don’t like seeing it yeah and then when Lively gets back you can probably play

Maxi more at the four and not have you know the five Maxi can be like a look instead of like a we have to do this uh but yeah I mean you know do you see this question in the chat this is a great question from Maverick’s fan the the

Most original name in our chat what’s the type of screen called where the big hangs back and then goes and sort of sort of screens the help Defender that’s that I mean are we talking Gortat screen like yeah I think that’s what he’s talking about the the G screen when

You’re blocking your it’s an offensive foul that doesn’t get called ever because it’s like a dive where you knock the crap out of whoever’s in the lane um could be wrong it we might not be referencing the right thing though but that’s that’s what I am I was thinking

About um anyhow all right we’re I that just wanted to to answer the gentleman’s question is a good question um what else do we kind of have have of note to talk about the in this game I don’t know I because it’s just one of those games

Where they just kind of I mean they look I mean they look like a team that’s definitely looking forward to the all-star Break um maybe that’s why they started a little slow but that’s getting into their heads which I don’t know but but defensively like Washington didn’t

They trapped Luca a little bit I thought Luca got a little loose with the ball in the first half um his turnovers were pretty bad um and he threw like a lob to Gafford that Gafford missed the lob dunk like he he eventually got it but Luca

Kind of like put a little too much hot sauce on it and like it it it made it a tougher play than it needed to be and there there were a couple moments like that in the first half so once he settled down in the second half like

That’s kind of when the game changed especially in the fourth quarter like once I mean again once the turnovers right up the maps had 16 turnovers that’s a lot for them you know they’re they’re closer to 10 right turn overs a game so those extra possessions and runouts was giving Washington basically

Life support on offense because they were just not making any shots otherwise so once that cleaned up that was kind of the game uh and also credit to well I don’t know it’s credit but they bench Tim Hardway Jr in the fourth they rode Jaden Hardy and Jaden Hardy scored 10

Points in 13 minutes made two threes in the fourth quarter that were needed threes very needed threes yeah yes so that that swung it uh and yeah otherwise everyone else kind of fell into place the T you know Tim had a you Tim’s game was horrible uh I don’t

Know what else to say other than he was just me he’s got they gotta Institute with the options that they have now they have to Institute some sort of some sort of heat check rule where if he rolls out there and he misses three shots in a row

Get him out he doesn’t help on defense I mean there was a really there’s a really funny tweet from a Ms me or a Dallas area media person just insisting that Tim Hardway Jr is a good Defender because NBA people had told him that he is an average to okay Defender which the

Only thing that proved is NBA people will tell you kind of whatever you ask um and that not to believe everything you’re told but Hardway when he’s just when he’s not working if this team doesn’t need him they shouldn’t keep letting him go out there to do that like

That’s there’s going to be times when he really really works because he’s just going to catch fire but the Mavericks didn’t need him to keep shooting they needed attacking and then the one time he did attack uh Kabal swatted him so beautifully into the corner that kid

After that was like okay you’re done and it shouldn’t have gotten to that point to be quite honest I mean Hardway attacked a it was a one on Three like just such a horrendous decision and I’ve lived with the Maverick’s terrible decisions or I’m sorry Tim Hardway terrible decisions because really you

Know there’s no other option than a confident man in some games but they don’t they don’t need that now with Kyrie healthy you got PJ Washington who can dribble I do kind of think we should talk about you know PJ’s kind of weird two games here Josh Green’s ability to

Attack you just don’t need Tim doing this sort of sort of stuff yeah for sure it made it made sense when like they had a match uned out there and like half the teams on the injury report because it’s like well who else is going to score if

It’s not Luca and Luca has to play 40 minutes like someone else has to put the ball in the bucket uh and that’s where it made a lot of sense um so yeah yeah it’s just it’s been two games we’ll see if that leash gets sh hey at least it’s not

To the point where it’s like he’s playing the like I mean like let’s remember like some Rick Carl alar where Rick would ride the vet like regard like come high water and not even give a young guy like Hardy that opportunity like if this was like

2000 if this was like 2013 or something no there’s no way Jaden Hardy would have finished this game over Tim Hardway Jr Mavericks lose so you know at least it’s it it didn’t cost them the game and they pulled the plug you know at the absolute last

Moment so you know it’s glass half empty glass half full I guess you had a you had an interesting observation in our slack about why you think PJ Washington helps things even if he’s not shooting particularly well and you’ve talked about it a little bit already but

I think it’s worth kind of just going over again for anybody that hasn’t been listening to the show like what the what you you feel I’m I’m trying not to put words in your mouth but you feel that that the NBA has adjusted to Luca setting up for open Shooters and now the

Fact that they have a few more guys who can attack off the dribble whether or not the guy shoots 38% from the corner or 34% from the corner is mattering less than it used to just because if that guy that’s shooting 34% from the corner can also attack off

The dribble now which Dorian really couldn’t yeah no exactly um I really need to write this as like a larger piece because it’s been you know rattling around my brain for a while but you just look at the best teams in the NBA right now Boston Denver the Clippers um even you know

OKC um just these really good teams that have offenses that you think that are po right now like just not a lot of it’s not a lot of stand still spot up Shooters not to say that those teams can’t shoot threes very well but like you look at Boston and it’s like Tatum

Brown holiday Derek white like those guys are not just guys that sit in the corner can’t do anything like even Denver like uh playing next to yo like they don’t just surround joic with just standstill spot up Shooters like Aaron Gordon uh and Porter Jr and Murray they

And even kcp they all have a little juice it if a defender’s flying at them like I think the league kind of went through that three and D like super role player kind of during the Warriors era and I think it was like when these super

Teams you had like the LeBron heat and and the Steph the Steph KD Warriors and then even the LeBron Cavs like these teams that had like these three massive contracts and it’s like okay well how do we fill out the rest of our team if three guys are our cap space basically

It’s like well let’s just find some guys that can you know they might not be able to do anything but but hit hit spot up Corner threes but they can play D and they can’t get played off the floor well now like you know it’s not just

Adjusting to Luca like Luca you know there’s plenty of other teams that play like the Mavericks and have a hiloc Centric you know offensive Hub that that controls the game and can pick out Shooters like eventually the defense is gonna adjust regardless of what you think the NBA Defensive rules need

Changing or any of that like and I just see teams more aggressive with blitzing more aggressive with trapping more aggressive with with Closeouts and they you know having guys like you’re seeing a lot more big men guarding perimeter players that they don’t think are offensive threats so they can play like

Free safety in Rome yeah because they don’t even one they don’t respect the perimeter player can do anything with the ball we’ve seen the Mavericks do that with Luca and who he guards sometimes yeah so I think now more than ever you need guys that you know and

Again I remember when I said this once someone responded I was like like how many teams have five point guards on the floor like you don’t need five point guards you just you need guys that when a Defender is running at them to chase them off the line you know take what the

Defense gives you and hard dribble into the lane and either hit a mid-range shot or hit a floater or keep the keep the play moving be able to pass it to the to the weak side other end for a corner three if you can force a rotation like

You just have to be able to have something like that uh to to keep these defenses honest and off balance because otherwise I think you you’ve seen we’ve seen it we’ve seen with this Mavericks team teams will be brazing with their doubles on Luca they’ll be brazing with

Their help in in the paint against Luca and we’ve seen how many times have we seen in since Luca’s been drafted here they’ve lost games because teams do not care about these guys open from the three-point line one because they either don’t trust them really as shooters or

Two it’s like well we’ll just run them off the line and then nothing’s gonna happen and then the ball kind of hop potatoes back to Luca and you got Luca playing 40 minutes with for a usage rate getting worn down at the end of games and and we’ve seen that story time and

Time again so like Washington has that like he made a couple another couple of floaters tonight like you said he presented himself well sealing off kind of a Defender was fronting him in the paint and Luka found him and he got a nice lay or dunk can’t remember can’t

Remember which but but yeah like if now he can’t shoot over for five from three every game he can’t shoot 30% from three because eventually that’s just you know there’s got to be some balance but if he can get that up to you know he’s like 32

For the year if he can get up to 34 35 like they can make that work like Derrick Jones Junior has started a ton of games for this team in Washington spot yep and he’s shooting like 34% from three and the Mavericks have had a top

10 offense almost all year yep and and we’ve seen how many times have we seen that infusion of Jones being able to just attack a close out and get into the paint uh with the ball uh and do things and finish and score like he’s not incredible at it but like he’s averaging

Your career high because his skill set’s kind of finally being utilized here so yeah that’s I mean that’s really important like that’s why the three-point shooting again it doesn’t bother me and like I’m not saying like three-point shooting doesn’t matter like I’m raging against analytics like absolutely not U but it just gives

The Mavericks an extra Dimension where they can win games without making 18 three-pointers every yeah yeah all right is there anything else I’m trying to think of of stuff so you know one one guy in the chat Eric notes that Kyrie played 43 minutes don’t like that I

Think that happened in no small part because Luca took that elbow to the chin and had to go back for a little bit I mean um that sort of threw off their minutes Vibes to a degree they also needed him because they weren’t scoring

Like yeah no and I and you know I I liked Kyrie’s game I mean he a lot of stuff didn’t go down for him tonight but this was one of the more assertive Kyrie games I’ve seen um which was you know outside of the fact when Luka wasn’t playing at all so

That was something that was was refreshing to see um you know there’s there’s just little bits of here and there of of Josh Green like is this just kind of who he is now like is like remember we were wondering great stat stuffing game for him just all sorts of

Little stuff 30 minutes 13 points four four rebounds two assists two steals a block zero turnovers uh I I’m liking it’s interesting so there’s a gentleman in here a couple days ago that’s kind of arguing with me and us about Josh Green’s defense and this was a good example of where Josh

Green can the these games have these last two games Grant it’s only two games but are kind of an example of what Josh Green can do if he’s not having to guard up um if he’s guarding the right guy in the lineup and not a guy four inches

Taller than him that he can’t hang with so it’s it’s good it’s it’s him as a connecting piece is going to be very interesting as as the season goes along um you think we there is one more thing that I that I want to address um I need

To pull it up on my timeline you got anything else you you want to talk about yeah while you’re doing that it’s just real real short um someone uh someone mentioned you know why were uh Derrick Jones Jr’s minutes so short and yeah he only played 12 minutes I I I don’t have

It up with me right now but he’s been like one of their Innings eaters like because he has he’s been one of the few that hasn’t gotten hurt as consistently in that starting lineup um yeah this is the least amount of minutes he’s played in a game since

December 11th and I want to say he probably got hurt in that game because he only played six minutes against the Grizzlies so this was his lowest amount of minutes he’s played in a game that’s mattered since opening night basically um so I I don’t read too much

Into that other than like they got PJ Washington like that’s kind of he’s taking his spot um if they needed more from him def you know and this wasn’t a game where they needed more defense I mean they were I know Washington was was kind of cooking a little bit in the

Second and third quarters right but they like again like I said they were hovering around 43% from like they the Mavericks needed offense to get back into this game so that’s probably why they rode the Kyrie Tim Hardy minutes a little bit harder than most people would

Have liked but but with Washington here like he kind of is fing the spot that that Jones had so um it’ll be interesting to see if he plays more maybe in in a matchup where they need more perimeter defense um but man like Washington had like Jordan P one of 12

Uh kissper was two of 11 he has never been the same since Draymond punched him in the face like there’s a direct like he’s been awful since Draymond punched him in the face I know he was a positive player in the NBA Finals not that long

Ago yeah and then Kabal was one of 10 like Washington was only getting buckets maybe you could have put them on Avia maybe that would have helped but I just think with Washington here I wouldn’t be surprised if Jones gets a little squeezed sure out of the rotation uh and

K it makes makes him a more situational player yeah all right the last thing I want to make reference to um so Spencer deny after uh you know getting wooed by both the Lakers and the Mavericks opted to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers and today he gave Dave McManaman of ESPN a

Quote there’s a story up on ESPN about it I but recommend you go seek it out but he gave this quote uh to the Los Angeles media let’s say you’re a kid and you get your ass whooped by the bully Dallas would have been like your mama

Like it’s okay baby the Lakers are like your dad nah you better go out there and fight till you win end quote I just can’t be more pleased with my initial take and I’m mad I backed off it for those of you who don’t recall I I essentially was trying to imply that

Spencer Den Wy is a chuckle [ __ ] who can’t help himself from saying stupid [ __ ] and it didn’t get noticed by our local media very much for two reasons number one the Dallas Mavericks won a lot while he was here um number two the stuff Spencer said never really seemed

To make waves but we got all the transcripts we see all the stuff he says and when the Mavericks started losing prior to the uh like after the the New York Knicks game last year and before he got traded for Kyrie Irving his postgame quotes got more and more stupid and I

Mean this is a guy who has zero self-awareness which works both for and against him the same way it works for and against Tim Hardway and he went to the Los Angeles Lakers a place where there’s not going to be a lot of playing time for him where Christian Wood his

Former teammate was bragging about uh uh recruiting him and he’s just the most anti- LeBron player I can possibly imagine LeBron James does not put up with that kind of [ __ ] and it’s just I I I I feel good about my initial take I’m really glad I backed off it whenever

That yeah no man we got a nice good ugly win that was cool uh PJ Washington didn’t have a great shooting game but once again the driving was impactful he got his little floater going and the defense in the fourth quarter him Maxi Josh and luuka in the fourth quarter oh

My God like I I don’t know what they shot Luca up with when he went to the locker room but when he came back I think it was what seven minutes six minutes left in the maybe even less than that in the fourth quarter that sounds

Right he came back and he was absolutely electric dude and on both ends and so he was switching he he even locked in up for a possession after Denny had been actually a couple possessions after Denny had been cooking him all game long like he was getting nailed to the cross

And then two straight possessions or two possessions close to each other he just stonewalled him on and couldn’t do anything with it got a turnover uh Maxi dunk in transition right on the other end and yeah dude I just I just can’t find enough nice things to say about Max CER and Josh

Green they’ve been so good during this win streak and it’s nice that Josh can like just play basketball well consistently right like we’re we’re we’re working on like a month and a half of this now like this is this is a pretty big sample size right well nice basketball is is is the

Whole point it’s like when you watch an ugly game it’s so frustrating to deal with it because you know what they look like when they actually look good yeah this coming right out of the OKC game was disgusting I’m I’m not going to blame Tim for missing shots I

Will blame him for some of the terrible looks that he had but those are the looks that he gets and those are the shots he takes when his shot is falling too so I get it I’m not as mad at Tim now the defense you can be mad at him

For but when he was missing shots and it was clear that the shot wasn’t really coming back he kid finally pulled him somewhere in the second and went back to him late in the second and he hit a three and then he hit a or he hit a

Mid-range pull up and then he hit a three and after that nothing and from then on kids got to know all right this dude is like two for 10 he was so bad he was two for 13 tonight I think yeah he missed like he had a stretch where he

Missed five straight shots and he took five straight shots for a consecutive possessions R and at that point yeah it had to be okay Jaden you gotta come out here and make something don’t need that anymore that’s the whole point of getting two better players is you’re

Supposed to not and when it works you’re happy with it he comes out he I just didn’t I feel like I’m missing something when I watch Jason kid coach but I mean that’s kind of the general consensus of everyone where you know he’s just maybe a little there there’s got to be a

Method to the madness but it just it’s and and of course you’re very glad we’re very glad as a team we’d rather than win ugly than than like lose and and have to talk about that which I if that was the case I wouldn’t have done one of these

Because I just wasn’t in the mood to to deal with with that kind of negativity but you know that’s that’s the way it goes yeah no I think it’s it’s just an amalgam of things like kid trying to get Tim to understand slowly like look brother it’s not going to be 30 minutes

A game anymore for you if you don’t have en rolling it’ll it’ll be closer to 15 to 18 and if you can get it going it’ll probably top out around 25 but we don’t need 30 a game from you anymore that that’s not what you’re out here for not

Out here to do the secondary tertiary creating with the bench line we we don’t need that from you we’ve got guys who can catch and attack and do something with the ball in their hands we’ve got guys who can make for other people out of drives like even Jaden Hardy is

Coming in and honestly I thought even from when he came in in the first half he was playing better defense than Tim he was attacking the paint really well like he got a I think he got he missed a shot he missed an at Rim attempt and then got the ball back later

In that same possession and drove and scored through contact really well and yeah he was just moving his on defense staying in front of guys had a really good two-way sequence where he locked up Cory kissper and forth bad Miss and then obviously he he came in in the fourth

And he quite literally saved the offense when it was looking like a sinking chip with those two threes and yeah man I’m I am happy with his progress so far this season like he I mean I wanted to trade him we talked about that in here like

Like we don’t want to see him anymore go away and and the fact that that kid stuck with him I think is inter the fact that he’s stuck with it is is is impressive to a degree I I think hopefully what we’ve seen in these last

Several games is is and it it because it does it goes back like three weeks I think he’s been playing better is he’s getting fewer opportunities to do things he can’t do um just like C I like the catch and shoot I like when he catches

The ball on the way when he’s already moving I don’t like it when he gets the chance to size up that’s and I’ve repeated that all year long yeah when he’s got time to stop and think with the ball bad things more often than not happen he’s been a

Better playmaker right he’s actually been pretty good like when he not taking time to really think about what he’s doing but yeah no if you’re trying to like run picking rolles for him or like run Wing ISO actions for him I we’re not seeing any of that really anymore

Thankfully and it has helped his game and so now we’re seeing from him and from Josh some of the things we wanted to see at the beginning of the Season it took a while but we’re here now so I’m grateful uh and yeah now kid just has to

Know that look man that Tim leash is short now we we don’t have time for you to be out here wrecking the game for us on both ends if you don’t have it for 25 30 minutes a night and we don’t we don’t have to live with that it’s like you

Said we’ve got we still have even that uh open roster spot on the back end of the rotation where we can uh convert AJ Lawson to have him come in and give us some energy man as if even like Josh doesn’t have it on a given night right

But no man I think that us winning this game in the fashion in which we did where we just Luca troll for three quarters and then came back and we just turned it on on both ends and just cooked them and it only took like six

At first with p J I got killed on Twitter I got killed in the slack and I understood so obviously when we when it was just Grant Williams in the first I thought I wouldn’t say still but I thought it was more than a fair trade

More than a fair trade now I think that a lot of people I was on Twitter I’m seen the comments oh nothing stood all uh PJ today he didn’t shoot so well look at the way he played defense he was getting switched on to point guards and

The point guards couldn’t attack him and even when they were able to kind of get by him it wasn’t an immediate Blow by he left enough time for for the help to get there and you know and force him to move that alone is gonna be so helpful for us

Because if Grant Williams had to say front of a point guard I mean the guy’s instantly in the lane and our defense falls apart so defense and if we could he could guard credibly one through four I don’t think he’s physical enough they would run around Charlotte at small ball

Five I don’t think they’re gonna do that but one through four if he can switch with LCA with CA with some of our other wings and then we have rent protection behind them I think that that’s going to raise the flaw of our defense look his

Shots going to come and go we didn’t bring him here for the shot but I posted it in the comments that one play Kyrie was like eight seconds left K got stuck in no man’s Lane he kicked it to to PJ in the corner PJ got into the lane threw

His little float up and the fact that he can do that and get a bucket if that ball goes to Cle or some of these other guys they’re just they’re looking for Luca or Kyrie right they don’t know what to do he can attack close outs like

Joshed too and so he’s he’s learning how to play winning basketball in Charlotte none of the games he played in the last two three years had any Stakes he could afford to just go out there and just play like it was LA Fitness but he’s learning and focusing on small details

And that’s what I’m looking for can he buy into that winning team mentality and if he can everything else will Blossom from there but I feel like he’s setting a good foundation thus far so I’m ecstatic and Gafford is just he’s a he’s a monster sure I’m I’m honestly I’m

Happy now as far as if I can real quick I know a lot you know I listen to all the podcast and all my favorite podcasts Nate Duncan and Zack l they all thought that we possibly gave up too much in those trades right sure but to me again

I just think look Kyrie’s over 30 and he’s our second best player the window and the opportunity to win and to maximize whatever this current iteration of the team is it’s the next one to two years probably you got to see what that gets you right you can’t slow build

While Kyrie the clients because any incremental gains that we make by doing smart moves on the margins and being smart with you know offset yeah offset by Kyrie’s decline right and at that point they don’t matter as much maximize the next one to two years and look with

If Luca leaves we’re gonna be boned regardless right yeah so let’s try and win some meaningful games and hopefully I know that for C reasons you said we can give him a 100 million than the than the other team and to you’re right no Superstars walked away from that kind of

Money there still a part of me that’s like well I don’t know I don’t want L to be the yeah let’s not let’s not get it to where it’s really a discussion now I do got a PJ Washington thing for you that I want to he response to the com

The chat is talking about this too and I think I agree so they they got PJ involved in the pick and roll early one possession and it worked then the rest of time his ass was standing in the corner now Josh Bo and I just talked about how PJ’s ability to drive off

Those Corners is pretty fantastic and pretty important but I do think the Mavericks need to concerted effort to get him involved with the ball a little bit earlier not in in pick and roll situations like that they’re they’re leaving something out by asking him to go stand there for for long periods of

Time you got to involve him sometimes the problem is that none of our cers can actually stretch the floor so I want to see so don’t tell me that Derek Lively everybody made we all we heard was oh he made 13 and and I just want to see it I

Don’t care I want to see I heard he shot Seven threes in a row where had practice at Duke one day I don’t know that’s the rum I here so he’s like that’s all so I hear what you’re saying but it’s also I also think you can have some dunker spot

Stuff if you move like the far side corner guy move him up um above the break and and and slide you know the big man over in the corner a little bit you’re you’re probably right but I I still just want to see because I think

Out there we just can’t do that with Gafford because you know Gafford sure outside of the the circle I mean he’s pretty much useless right so I think but I think whatever creativity kid has I think we’ll see more of that when SL Le’s actually out there um but with

Gafford you know there’s no threat of him popping right he’s only going to roll and so if you just have him out there kind of clogs the lane and you know as I think as PJ um his shot becomes more consistent and he’s more of a threat out there and they have to

Guard him more credibly then I think that’ll help open up some space but but no I agree but honestly I’m I’m excited against to watch Maverick’s basket that’s true no that’s like the big part where they haven’t had any practice time and there’s a lot of people in the

Comments KN hey you can do some creative things you can run double screens I don’t think they’ve had any practice time so you’re not really getting any other things than like the sheer basic probably like one two action stuff that all the teams use but it’s like you

Don’t really have the time to go over on the floor so you’re just basically relying on the fact that you’re like a professional baller I mean I’m I’m being a little factious there but you know basketball is basketball and like until you get the Reps in you know so but

It’s the it’s the thing I had from the very beginning of the Season like I think the roster is better than it was the beginning of the Season sure to me the major concern for me is always has been coaching really and it’s it’s the same conversation again and again and I

Kind of just don’t want to have it so I’ll try to avoid it if I can um but this this was a game that the team would have lost even just before the trade deadline right it’s a little inspiring that you know they kept themselves in it

Really Kyrie kept Kyrie and Hardy really kept the team in it in the third quarter because it it got out of hand really I think the the Wizards had a 10-point lead at one point like it looked kind of out of hand so I got to give Hardy some

Credit he at least had effort and which matters which matters and the thing was like thj I’m also kind of a defender of him I think when he has great games you easily forget like it’s easy to forget but thj dropped 40 earlier in the season

Like that’s a right crazy thing he did but when you have a game like this where he just isn’t hitting shots his defense is not even close to passable like there was a play where thj was overloaded on the wrong side so essentially it was three guys covering two and so Josh was

In between two guys and thj was shouting at Josh and it was like I think you’re in the wrong here buddy like I think you’re not covering who you’re supposed to be and they got a wide openen layup play to the Rim my bad I removed you I don’t my mouse died so I’ve been operating off my trackpad sorry about that you’re going you’re good no worries um it’s just moments like that that are frustrating right with Tim because they become more pronounced when he’s not hitting shots

That’s right you you hope that he doesn’t play often and part of it was kid also I felt like just didn’t put him in good spots like a three guard lineup not necessary anymore I get it like I get it you don’t have Lively right so I

Understand you want to play Maxi or Gafford in the big position like as your Center that’s fine I’m okay with that because you don’t have Lively but you still have Derrick Jones Jr like why are you not at least playing him at the three like it just felt very redundant

But otherwise I thought they it was it was positive that they kept themselves in the game in the third and then Luca played a much better fourth quarter especially defensively I thought you know Denny was cooking him basically throughout the first three quarters and he really clamped up how good is that

Guy by the way how good is that guy Denny AA is pretty impressive he feels very Josh to me we like he’s just huge though he’s six like he is a legit 69 yeah he’s very big um yeah he’s good I think he’s very Josh to me and that

There he’s he has games where he’s really good like this sure he’s a little out of control yeah or and then he has games where he’s just quiet like yeah so quiet so it’s this was like a perfect game for him where you know they played

Very small like kzo was playing Five a lot of the time so right he always got a pretty good matchup but yeah I thought at least in the fourth they made the right adjustments and I felt like the team played way better and you know I

Have the same worries like you like I don’t want Maxi playing so many minutes down the stretch but I thought you know guys have just been playing in a much more confident manner which is something that I don’t think we would have been saying in January at all so right that’s

The really the biggest like Maxi hitting at clutch three and then you know driving to the basket I mean it was it was pretty insane to see that happen so I I I could complain I am mad like it’s not great that you had to essentially

Eek out a pretty terrible win but the positives are the effort and the defensive effort specifically is there I think a lot of it is just scheme and especially offensive scheme like I think that has get fixed but I also think Lively will fix a lot of that stuff like

I was watching a lot of the conversation around the trade deadline and some of the stuff like Lively is kind of like Gafford I feel like is a little overblown I think it gets underrated how good of a passer Lively is yeah yeah for sure not just in the pick and roll but

In the post in general like that is that is something that gets underrated when you’re not like a A yic or even a shenon like those guys who are centers that are really much more pure passers whereas Lively I think is more in between he’s not a very traditional Center in the

Sense that he can’t pass it all but sure Lively’s not asked to do too much right now which is why whenever he gets in these short roll situations and does do the right thing it’s kind of like oh wow but I mean he’s capable of that yeah and

I think part of that comes with if you just watch highlights or Clips or you know you don’t watch a full game it or you just look at Stats those things aren’t always evident that he’s making the right decisions in the pick and roll or he’s making the right decisions in

The in the upper post right whether it’s to drive or it’s to kick out to the open shooter I think that thing that affects the team a lot so and it’s not to like bash on gaffer I still think gaffer is is great um I think he’s like I said I

Think I said earlier he’s a tier a big per big uh he’s a tier a backup center to have so really no complaints for me I think the roster is looking really good in a long long time time which is something I don’t think I’ve ever said

To be honest I don’t think I’ve ever felt in in a long time so more positive Spurs are going to be tough like Vic I think Vic had a apparently had a triple double with blocks today which is that is gonna be brutal but I’m playing the craptors though the Raptors look like

Ass like one um the what’s his name uh Grady dick took a couple of attempts against him where he looked like a a child trying to score over his father it was bad and I think it’s positive like Derek had a pretty good I think wy’s gotten better obviously

Since I first yeah he had a pretty good first game against him and I think it was you that mentioned it that thought that Gafford played a very good game against him and I think these are like Gafford to me is a very match dependent player where either you have to play

Against a very physical post presence Center or you have to play against a center that is not as physical as I think I think gav’s gonna bang you know really play physical with him know if Lively comes back hopefully Lively will too same same I’m just positive like I

I’m excited hopefully the team like gets a deserved break I mean six games in a row or five games in a row I should say yeah biggest longest win streak of the Season absolutely I got nothing else I don’t want to take too much of your time

I was in this pouty mood I was I was already coping I was like well you know if we win The Vibes are Vibes are pretty good but if we lose then you know kids really does not have an excuse to lose now so um you

Know we can’t we can’t lose I guess but uh no I was actually really proud of Luca for that fourth quarter because someone said it earlier man that we were just so unserious to uh start the game so and Luca too what he have I think he finished the game with five

Turnovers I want to say all five of them were in the first half like no their games that looked like that was like a year two criticism of dude stop playing down to the worst teams in the league just go out and annihilate them yeah yeah he also tried

That behind the back pass and it just went to like the fifth row or something like that like he very unserious looking and but yeah no I was going to say like we’ve seen him you know just kind of like mentally spiral at um so many games

Yeah during the back half of last season uh you know when things weren’t going well and I think he’s been a lot better this year I would say that he has uh so I mean good on him for like you know just kind of like reing in his emotions there

And whatnot and just Al and plus defense too was just like he was putting the clamps down uh in the fourth quarter there when he came back which is nice because it’s like I understand he doesn’t really want to use the energy to do that all game but this is a six-year

Conversation that we talked about Luca’s kind of Fitness level and I don’t think he can be an all NBA Defender but I do think he he is capable and needs to be able to play NBA level defense for most of a game night in and night out and

That’s he just needs to continue to to learn how to to learn how to tank I mean I hate to use like video game terminology but like Luca is the ultimate tank and he needs to be that position where he just he absorbs all the blows and he’s able to

Dish out punishment when he can and I just I I want I think he’ll get there but it’s it’s nice to see that he does have the defensive chops when he really does when he really does try yeah take a few hits and whatnot be a passable Team Defender I

Guess like yeah I remember having that same conversation with Durk um back when I was like I mean I didn’t have the conversation but I remember being what you mean that was a constant one about him where it’s like can he not be awful yeah yeah and but what I saw on

Twitter was floating around that he was like top five or something like that defensive rating as an individual stat is used to prove an argument it is nonsense and is and uses it is being is is telling on themselves now I’m fine with that because I’m Petty and I enjoy

Winning arguments but it’s not a good one I mean hey you know if if it’s conf if it’s my confirmation bias as well right I’ll take it that’s right yeah and also shout out to PJ for still finding a way to make winning plays too sure I would say down the stretch I

Mean don’t I mean sure we would love to see him you know hit hit a a corner three every now and then because he’s gonna get those open looks you know Luke is gonna get him so many and uh but I’m just I’m just glad that he was you know

Again finding a way to make winning plays in crunch time and uh you be interesting to see how his role evolves because he can’t just do that I mean he’s better than that I mean still though he’s got a I I I like it when he attacks a close out and

Whatnot but you know if you’re not going to make a three then there’s not going to be a close out to attack I guess as what I’m trying to say there yeah but um five game winning streak I mean we Krishna said it I mean last week we

Probably don’t win um this type of game where we shoot 25% from three and turn the ball over you know just Hemorrhage turnovers so um this was a fun fourth quarter I guess and we all know other than Luca going Hulk mode in the fourth quarter we all know what the turning

Point in the game was it was Tim getting benched yeah no again it’s happened a lot the last like three weeks yeah it and Hardy kudos to Hardy like the game looks like it’s kind of slowing down for him so I guess my overreaction there would be that you

Know future six Man of the Year Jaden Hardy Tim count your days that’s right but no uh maybe maybe that was just s tier tanking by the Wizards who knows but I’m just at this point considering where we were a few weeks ago just glad to get

Awesome it’s really weird weird it’s like oh this is this is normal teams get to experience this like guys dunking not just one guy like guys dunking all the guys uh and then Luca at the last two games like has clearly been playing with his new toys and it’s been really fun to

Watch and like LC is not going for 45 but he’s just getting a chance to throw just the an inordinate amount of assists all over the place well that’s I’m glad you brought this up I meant to talk about this with Josh on on our in our

First podcast so he had 15 assists tonight he had nine the other night uh but only played 32 minutes the other game um I think that’s right but if does Luca my sort of thought is like if this is the team that they have and you go

Into next season does luuka have a chance at like an assist title for once because he has guys who can finish shots as opposed to just kicking out to three-pointers you guys at The Rim I mean he found between the oops and the shots going at The Rim I mean they have more

Of these they have to have more of these attempts the last two games than it it than their average on the year just looks great yeah all the paint scoring and then like you know it’s been repeated a couple times but just we would never win this game prior shooting

The shooting this three percentage like literally we’ve had one way to win games over the last three or four years which is um right and now the last two games I I mean we shot I guess I guess they shot pretty good during the OKC game but not
