What is going on with the big three?

When CJ, Zion and BI are on the floor together they are *losing* those minutes?? They have a net rating of -1.3. Which is obviously unbelievably concerning. Last season the big 3 had a net rating of +16, in limited minutes of course. But what’s changed? That’s a 17 point swing.

BI and Z are still struggling to play off each other. BI normally will only take 3s when he is clear cut wide open. Zion not a threat at all from the outside. Z does one thing and when it’s working great, when it doesn’t he looks lost. The paint so congested that we live or die with our outside shooting. When we hitting, we world beaters, when we’re missing the game looks challenging with no hope in sight. McCollum plays passive. He’s more of a catch and shoot guy when all 3 on the court at the same time.

Despite how good of a guy CJ is he’s just not a great fit with Zion and Ingram who still have plenty to work out themselves. Part of why I liked the Dejounte move is because he’s more the type of guy you need next to our stars and also is a much better option to take some of the facilitator burden off Ingram than CJ is. I feel like we’ll likely revisit that trade idea in the offseason

Idk if I’d call it “unbelievably” concerning. Last year they weren’t on the floor as much together so it was a much smaller sample size. Unfair to compare the two seasons.

Imo, it’s a combo of inconsistency, maturity, experience, and leaning on the other options. The first 3 all come from not playing much together and still learning how to run the offense. I think it’s possible, given we’ve seen some crazy flashes, it just takes time. We’ve also seen them and the pelicans rely more on second options when the big 3 isn’t in a groove. Trey, Herb, Hawk at times, and JV have all had games where they were the primary contributor.

It’s concerning, but not to the point where I’m worried about it quite yet. At the end of the day, we’re off to a very solid start to the season and know we have the potential to hang with anyone

  4. BI and Z does not work together. when only one is in, team gets better. When both are in, tough to watch. Except for the first quarter in LA (when Zion was awful on D anyway) every big stretch for either happen when the other is on the bench.
