The NBA has a National Media Problem – Cleveland Cavaliers News

Right now we are going to talk about the Cleveland Cavaliers a little bit of love the Cleveland Cavaliers just had one of the most dominant months in NBA history that is not hyperbole they literally did something that only five other teams have ever done before and yet no one is

Talking about them in fact there are so few people talking about the Cavaliers that all anyone talks about is that no one is talking about the Cavaliers it’s a narrative that exists for every small Market team that feels they are going unnoticed but how accurate is this

Concern and does the NBA actually have a problem with its National media coverage Mitchell splits the double elevates and he’s flying Charter folks Donan Mitchell if you’re a cabs fan who just watched this recent string of success it’s understandable why you might feel irked by the way it has been covered not only

Did it take quite a while for the bigger platforms to even acknowledge the run but much of the conversation was plagued by stuff irrelevant to what was actually happening on the court whether it be non-stop speculation of Donovan Mitchell’s contract extension looking at the choices that Donovan Mitchell may

Have if they don’t I mean is is that an unfair question for attempts to downplay the Cav success by pointing to a weaker schedule where even stubbornly insisting that the roster has been poorly constructed despite a large sample size suggesting otherwise the national media has not treated the Cavaliers success

The same way they likely would have if it was happening in LA or New York all the while it’s important to be fair and acknowledge the ones who did Cover the Cavaliers during this run from local media to some of the best creators that just don’t show up on ESPN and even if

Some of the national coverage was a bit pessimistic there’s still a great deal of admiration for the way Cleveland has been playing all things being equal the Cavs are going going to be held to a different standard solely for the way they collapsed in last year’s playoffs I

Don’t think these concerns are due to small Market bias from the big wigs at ESPN any team that got bounced embarrassingly to an opponent which they ranked higher than would be receiving the same treatment as the Cavs and let’s face it Donovan Mitchell is far from the

Only star who has his name in rumors every other Tuesday whether it’s Mitchell Giannis or LeBron James NBA media feeds off of Star powerered rumors there are very few players who reach all NBA caliber without being included in the free agency or trade speculation that happens near non-stop in the Blogger

Universe this brings me to the larger problem that faces NBA media and really media Industries as a whole entertainment is more valuable than analysis most fans are casual and there’s really nothing wrong with that most people don’t have the time energy or interest to hear all about Dean

Wade’s defensive box plus minus as Kevin Durant once said so eloquently no one wants to look at graphs when talking about Hoops ESPN could spend valuable airtime detailing how Isaac aoro is accepting the toughest individual matchups on a night toight basis and some hardcore fans would appreciate a closer look into

A defensive Ace who has helped lead the best defense in the NBA since mid December but really most fans don’t care about a player who is averaging just nine points per game and will likely never sniff an All-Star team they want to hear about Superstar performances and

Above all else casual fans just want to be entertained it’s why Stephen A Smith is one of ESPN’s highest paid employees despite most fans agreeing that his Insight isn’t on the same level as other analysts Stephen A Smith isn’t getting paid for his analysis he’s getting paid to entertain you and all things

Considered he’s damn good at his job if this happens Max I I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself some of ESPN’s most watched videos are Stephen A Smith shouting at other people or simply walking off the set I don’t know if any other media member has become more of a

Meme in sports culture outside of skip bis we a’t going to talk about this take me out it’s my turn it is you told me it was my turn you talk who much like his former First Take partner has mastered the art of sports entertainment I don’t

Know anyone who takes skip seriously and yet he’s one of the most followed Sports accounts on Twitter with a wildly successful career I’m not breaking any ground here and I think most fans are aware that entertainment Trump’s analysis when it comes to National media coverage but is it really that simple

Market bias is something that absolutely plays a role in all of this some teams are naturally more popular than others and the larger media conglomerates are going to cater to the largest possible audience for example Austin Reeves pulled in the 13th most views on social media all of last year more than the

Reigning MVP Joel embiid and I can’t think of any explanation for this other than the Los Angeles Lakers being the most popular team in basketball LBG how about that so of course National media is going to focus on Austin Reeves more than some other players who might deserve recognition

Take Cleveland Sam Merill as an example Merill would probably be a name recognized by everyone if he played in a Laker uniform but since he’s in Cleveland the NBA’s leader and three-pointers per 100 possessions is still an underground Indie deep cut for most fans should we be mad at ESPN for

The lack of Sam Merill coverage yes and no ESPN didn’t make Los Angeles a more appealing city than Cleveland Ohio and ESPN can’t control that fans will go crazy for transaction rumors and heated debates as opposed to in-depth basketball discussions this highquality conversation between JJ reck and Tim

Legler got 84,000 views while a shouting match between Kendrick Perkins and Richard Jefferson netted over 250,000 in the same week Stephen A Smith answering a question from ball sack Sports at ball sack Sports good Lord got more views than a detailed breakdown of Cleveland’s recent success from the dunker

Spot all this to say most fans only want one thing and it’s not the dean weight agenda but should we be mad at the national media for this business model I don’t think so at the end of the day these leagues wouldn’t exist without the media promoting them we can argue if

This is the most effective way to to do it was toar Odum who was on crap but you can’t argue with the results so far the best thing about modern technology is that anybody can share their opinion online I mean that might actually be the worst part of modern technology but at

Least it means that smart people such as Nikas Duncan and Steve Jones can share their insight and build a huge following all on their own if you’re upset that ESPN isn’t covering the Cavs you want them to then you should just look elsewhere to get your fix you can find

Content from local creators such as myself the chase down it’s Cavalier podcast lock on Cavs and so many more talented people but if you just want to hear Stephen A Smith debate whether or not Lightning McQueen is washed up you can find that too weathers has seven

Piston cups I am not about to sit here and argue with a grown ass man about the movie Cars oh come on now Strip Weathers has seven piston cups overall I think it would be better if National Media made a consistent effort to promote the best basketball being played regardless of

Where that basketball is being played at I don’t think any reasonable person has ever watched an exciting NBA game from their couch and thought man if only this game was taking place in Los Angeles instead of Denver we just want to see exciting players do exciting things and with so

Many great people offering different forms of analysis online it really falls on the consumer to seek out the type of content they want to see you know what to expect from ESPN at this point so rather than complaining that Tim bontemps won’t talk about your favorite

Team go and find the people who are talking about your favorite team and support them instead and I’d encourage you to leave a comment with some of your favorite NBA content creators below to help spread the word buddy heeld has found out and the Cavaliers are not done yet oh

The Cleveland Cavaliers haven’t gotten the national media attention they feel they deserve.

Does the NBA have a problem with national coverage? Or is this just how the business needs to operate in order to maximize its views?

  1. These corporate mascots spend more time reading teleprompters than watching actual games. I am convinced. They want it to be pro wrestling.

  2. Honestly in the next few years the national media is gonna have to focus more on the small market teams. The league is a lot deeper than it used to be and your average super star can't just go to a big market and recruit his two other superstar friends and immediately be a conference championship lock. That would a second round lock in today's league. Players are gonna have to go to places that suit their chances to win and that may not be a big market. Also there is the "That's rather cavalier" podcast, they popular on Spotify.
