The Monty Williams Detroit Pistons era is getting so weird

So I live in Los Angeles and I have a fellow Pistons fan friend that wanted to go see the game in crypto.com Arena Lakers Pistons right now as someone that has watched almost every Pistons game this season and hasn’t been able to see them in person I jumped at the chance

Not because I wanted to see the Pistons play and lose in person but I’ve never been to crypto.com Arena before now what I was expecting was like pretty good basket ball game in terms of the fact that the Pistons had just played the Clippers close losing by only six in a

Very impressive outing what I was not expecting was to see 24 minutes of Evan fornier in some of those minutes where he’s guarding LeBron for a long time and just an absolute coaching Master Class by Monty Williams and I say that very sarcastically if you’re new here welcome

In and if you know me welcome back feel free to like And subscribe to the channel it’s free it helps out the algorithm and it helps me out too I appreciate it and let’s keep talking about my basketball coach it makes me upset that the Pistons in those two

Games look way worse than before the trade deadline happened my only working theory that I have right now is that the Detroit Pistons in the two wins before playing the Clippers uh only one because we had traded away basically every other player at this point that gets in mon

Williams’s way and what I mean by that is that Monty Williams has a very interesting knack for playing players that shouldn’t be playing it’s the Moneyball thing remember when he’s like you you’re playing haberg what Troy Weaver has been doing and I don’t think this is on purpose is that Troy Weaver

Has been trading every player or waving trading or waving any player that Monty Williams has no business playing whether it’s Killian Hayes whether it’s Isaiah livers like those two players were getting in the way of the other players on the rotation in the roster and and it’s it’s inexplicable because the fact

That it shouldn’t take intervention from higher ups to be like hey play Jaden iy on the ball and seeing Evan fornier just play extended minutes and me paying to see this game by the way just really hit home the fact that like everything Monty Williams does has been making me sad as

A Detroit Pistons fan like nothing he has done this season has like really instilled any confidence for the fan base whatsoever and for a long time I feel like I was very lenient or I was like there’s a caveat being like hey Monty Williams isn’t being a good coach

Right now but also look at the team that he’s being given not only is there a talent deficit right now uh the tal L roster wasn’t coherent for a long time now during the losing streak do I think that Monty Williams coached the team out of some games yes I think he coached

Them out of a lot of games which again makes me sad but like hey it’s really been weird this season going from J 9V not starting and being put behind a player that isn’t on the team anymore and got waved like couldn’t even trade him for like second round picks got

Waved to going from Monty Williams starting one of the statistical worst players in the league just off of Vibes and then the time where uh Marvin Bagley who I think is currently the starting center of the Wizards right now he is playing behind James wisman only because

Monty Williams is like well James wisman just deserved a shot or needs a shot and I’m like who says that that has to happen James wisman might not even be on the team next year but I think that throughout all of those times we’ve been able to be like dude this front office

Has not given Monty Williams a coherent roster so while Monty Williams was getting in the way we always pointed back at the incoherence of the roster but now Troy Weaver traded for players that are more coherent to this roster it is so absurd how low the bar is in

Detroit Mike muscala has been so great for Detroit by just the absolute even the threat of being able to shoot a three in comparison to Isaiah livers who was horrendous right even the time that gonar was there it was a brief couple of games it was a night and day difference

In how this team operated and I could excuse Monty Williams coaching performances I can excuse us being bad I could excuse us losing if Monty Williams in like press conferences was saying anything even remotely encouraging but he’s not he’s not doing that every time Jay iy has a good game it seems like

It’s so hard for this man to give him a compliment and he did give him a compliment once and we as a Pistons fans were like holy crap did he just give jayen iy a compliment he I don’t think he’s done that all season Donovan Mitchell spoke highly of jadeen Ivy and

I was like I don’t think Monty Williams has ever talked about jadeen Ivy in that respect and it could be a tough love thing but when it goes over for over half a season it just comes off as being a hater my doomsday scenario last year

Which we joked about on Twitter was that the Detroit Pistons would get the fifth pick that they would hire Kevin Oly and then they would sign Dylan Brooks CU Dylan Brooks at that time had been absolutely horrendous shooting the ball all season and you got the fifth pick we

Hire Monty Williams who at the time I thought oh wow this is actually like a really good hire he just took the Suns to the NBA finals but then you see all of these like Suns fans being like well good luck with that and at first you

Criticize at first you like take it as a green of assault being like oh they’re just Suns fans that are salty that their NBA Finals leading coach is gone what could possibly he couldn’t have been that bad right no NBA Finals coach could be that bad right and now I’m starting

To see it and let me tell you Monty Williams is not beating the the can’t coach Chris Paul allegations I’m going to tell you that much and I know that that there are EX’s nose coaches and then there’s more like personality coaches player coaches and whatever and

I’m not going to try to guess if Monty Williams is an ex’s nose coach or a player personality coach because from what I’m seeing it doesn’t feel like it’s much of either like I don’t know he’s not like a will hardy or Quinn Snider or spoler or pop like it doesn’t

Look like that on the court and on the other end hearing what Monty Williams has to say sometimes just like upsets me and infuriates me I mean he might be nice to the players I’m not in that locker room I have no idea he might be

Like a players coach or whatnot but that usually being a players coach on a team that’s like losing and doesn’t seem like they’re learning anything kind of is very hard to watch as a fan and the thing that set this all off honestly was seeing Evan fornier play over 20 minutes

In back-to-back games against the like Lakers and the Suns now I understand now I understand that if it was a long backto back road trip or whatever or it was a long trip and I also understand if Monty Williams is trying to like gauge the new Talent that’s come up because I

Mean half the team is new at this basically half the team is new we were in the Sands being like who is that is that shake Milton when did he like we were making jokes cuz we knew about all the deals but like seeing Shake Milton check in and seeing Evan fornier check

In and seeing Malachi Flynn check in and you’re like whoa who what what is happening here and I think the thing that really frustrates me is the fact that Evan fornier probably will not be on this team next year and the whole point of getting rid of bogdanovich and

Burks was to get an expiring contract so that next year we have a lot of cap space in free agency but now Monty Williams is playing an expiring contract that’s only played like three games he only played like three games for the Knicks getting this expiring contract

And playing him this many minutes I don’t see what that does for the Detroit Pistons future at any sense it I just doesn’t make sense to me honestly also watching Monty Williams coach these last two games against the uh the Lakers and the Suns was some of the most

Mindboggling stuff honestly because we were watching in the fourth quarter the Lakers are up 20 like the Pistons to be fair the Pistons players played absolutely horrendous basketball from start to finish even James wisman who had 18 and N if he wasn’t dunking the ball looked like he had like the lowest

Basketball IQ in the league honestly it’s very weird to watch I got nothing on that so there was a point in time where it was a 20-point lead going into the fourth quarter now Monty Williams you know Monty Williams he loves him an all bench lineup so what

Monty Williams did was he kept his bench in right and then he kept them in for a very long time and it got to the point where me and my friend were like did Monty Williams like throw in the towel for this game because it looks like a GG

Go next scenario where it’s like we’re just going to play out the fourth quarter or not but we were confused because we could not tell right so during this whole thing it’s a blowout it’s like blowout basketball but there’s a point where it gets to 14 and even

Gets to 12 Kade cutting him and Jaylen durren do not come back into the game until like 4 and 1/2 minutes left so that that whole time Monty Williams it seems like he was actually trying to win the game but I still had to watch like LeBron James and Anthony Davis play

Against the Piston second unit for an extended amount of time I do not think I’ve seen a coach that is so allergic to staggering starters than Monty Williams like it reminds me of a hockey line change the way that that he calls his rotations and substitutions also it’s

Wild that like he had this quote before the game being like it’s going to be hard to play 11 to 12 people um because that’s a lot of people to play but Monty Williams still finds a way to have an 11 man rotation and we don’t have a we

Don’t have a roster that deserves to have 11 to 12 people playing per game that’s not what we should be the focus should not be playing 11 people right now because a lot of these people aren’t going to be on the team next year I think Evan fornier has a team option and

He’s worth1 19 million it’s a $19 million team option that’s more than Isaiah Stewart next year who just punched a dude in the face before the game while he was like in the inactive roster that’s a whole another thing in its entirety what the Pistons are going

To do the thing is is that it’s wild that the Pistons seem like they’re even more of a mess currently than before the trade deadline and that’s really saying a lot here because you know we had the 28 game losing streak and Ronnie Williams just does it feels like

Anything that Monty Williams I’m going to say this again and again anything good that Monty Williams has done for the Detroit Pistons this year feels like an absolute accident it just does it feels like a lot of our wins happen when the other team has traded away players

And the other team is like playing short-handed and then that game against Portland where we actually played like the people that the Pistons fans really want to see play and develop and grow together we actually got to see that we actually won the game and it was cool

Seeing that kind of like cohesion being like here’s what a good Pistons game will look like but at stuff like this like I can I understand I understand a lot of these things in terms of like seeing who plays well or what but there are certain things I just can’t I just

Don’t understand the fact that like Mike muscala has been playing really well for this Pistons team and his minutes have seemingly been cut and then I I feel like when we do that and then start to pretend why are the wise minutes not winning and it’s like what do you my

Brother in Christ you have this you know you have the analytics and stats right like there’s no way that that’s the thing also it feels like there are certain things that have seem very obvious from a fan base perspective that like the coaches just do not register at all and it’s very

Frustrating and it makes me really question if Monty Williams is the guy going forward I don’t think he is and I don’t think my thing is I don’t think that Monty Williams is well equipped to coach a bad team like a team that goes in knowing they’re going to be bad like

In terms of like developing players and all of that it it feels like it feels like everything good this team has had this season has been in spite of Monty Williams and I don’t think that that is a good sign for a coach because there

Are a lot of games that we look at on this Pistons team we could have been like oh yeah this team didn’t play well but you know they learned some good things going forward versus like hey why is Evan fornier guarding LeBron James like for multiple possessions in a row

Hey why is this all bench lineup playing extended minutes for no reason I just I do not get I just do not get the all bench lineups bro I just don’t get is that something he did in Phoenix but like the thing about Phoenix is that

That Phoenix team was good enough to be able to get away with that that Phoenix team actually had a bench we don’t have that and I feel like using these games as like an experiment for like what could work and what could not work I would be fine with these experiments if

These experiments actually led to like actual conclusions that the coaching staff would act out I knew that we were in for some rough times when Monty Williams like came out earlier this year and was like yeah I used to hate Analytics whenever I hear a coach say

That I’m like oh no we’re in for it because I just do not think it makes me really sad seeing K Cunningham Jade Ivar and Jaylen durren we can’t even really as a fan base really evaluate how they’ve been playing together because this year they haven’t really been

Playing that many minutes together like we are we are finally getting a starting lineup of Cade Ivy fonio assar and Jaylen Duren now when Isaiah Stewart comes back I feel like Isaiah Stewart Isaiah Stewart started a lot before the trade deadline I would not be surprised

If he gets bumped back to the starting lineup but it’s just so frustrating game in and game out having like one thing every game that you look over at Monty and you’re like what are you doing budy I just don’t think that I I just don’t think that Monty Williams has given any

Pistons fan the confidence idence that he is the right guy to steer the ship because it feels like he’s been poking holes in the boat this entire time as well and the the straw was definitely when he was like yeah the organization came and was like yeah you should

Probably play Jay iy on the ball more I hadn’t thought of that what are you what I think that was the most that was the most frustrating part where it’s like dude I don’t know man I don’t know like it’s really hard to watch these Pistons games and like evaluate the Pistons

Future where it’s like hey if this guy is leading the charge bro I don’t have any confidence in this team at all and that’s really sad as a Pistons fan to like see elements good stuff or elements of like something cool something on the horizon cuz you see how the players act

Around each other they’re cool they’re fun the jayen Duran Jaden iy Big Brother little brother thing is like dope but then you see the dude at the helm and you’re just like oh no calm water or Uncharted Territory man I feel like this man is still going to find a way way is

Sync the ship and that is really really something I got to deal with man it’s rough anyway thank you for watching to the end of the video feel free to like And subscribe and any form of Engagement helps me out I love you guys and I’ll see you guys later Goodbye

  1. This entire Pistons season screams "10 years later video essay" material. some truly baffling things are happening on and off the court.

  2. I'm not saying he's a good coach BUT they're obviously tanking, so who cares? Why not give these guys time ? Maybe they can develop or maybe this is just those players one year when they get to really get to play in the NBA. Good for them. Because this times franchise is trying to lose and when that's the point this is good strategy .

  3. He’s really really really bad in all areas this season but especially player evaluation and rotation consistency. He just got to a park and started coaching a chaotic pickup game…Garbage. The only thing I can say is that if he’s still working for the Pistons at the beginning of next season I will be taking my first break as a Pistons fan during a 30+ year fandom. I’m done with this.

  4. I realized Monty was a trash coach when the suns and nuggets played in the playoffs last year. He would give Landale SIGNIFICANT minutes against Jokic even tho Ayton was clearly the only player who could hang with him on both ends. Even if he is just doing rotations off feel he has a terrible feel for the game

  5. Monty just needs 15 players that could start on championship teams. Simple solution

  6. Good god that last game was hard to watch. I really wondered during that second quarter whether they actually practice together. I haven't seen such a clown show of people running into each other and getting in each other's way since the last time I watched middle schoolers play. Wiseman looks like he could use a couple years in the D league or maybe high school. There are times they probably would have been better off having 4 guys on the court. I definitely agree that there seems to be a huge disconnect between coach and GM (and players). And by the way this was a Suns team minus 2 of their best players after Booker was ejected.

  7. I was there at the suns game. The rotations killed me. We can’t run all bench lineups when our bench is what it is currently with the grimes injuries. Wiseman I can’t watch anymore he just watches the ball bounce freely by him or a rebound go past him. Awful watch.

  8. I’m through with standing in line to clubs I’ll never get in, it’s like the bottom of the ninth and I’m never gonna win…

  9. Watch a lot of your content, Pistons fan in Baltimore. Monty gotta GO bruh! Coaching malpractice is understatement, he hates this job and the players, I’m praying we get ā€œBreaking Newsā€ that he has been fired. Gores need to take L and eat that contract. More harm than good. But I love the fact that opposing teams stars are praising Cade & Ivey after beating out asses lol even though that spells they will be gone when the opportunity comes. It’s been beyond frustrating watching every game this season, Monty is some shit. Point. Blank. Period.

  10. Also, there is no way they hold practices. He hasn’t taught them a damn thing 41 games into a season. It’s even worst because of his staff being so experience in the league, can’t wait for a podcast few years down the line when fans really get the truth of what it’s like having him be coach

  11. as a fellow Pistons fan in LA, i went to the Clippers game and was likewise, "who the f are all these guys? why are we playing a bench mob of guys who just joined yesterday?"

  12. 13:25 Yes, he did in fact run all bench lineups in Phoenix, and no, the bench was not good enough to survive those minutes. In the 21 and 22 seasons our bench was better but Monty also staggered the Chris Paul and Booker minutes with a healthy amount of Cam Payne being used as a combo guard to keep it all cohesive, and as a result our rotations those years were really good and we won a shit ton of games both years. Come 2023 though, for whatever reason, the all bench lineups just appeared out of nowhere, and this was compounded by the loss of a lot of our bench in the offseason (mainly Javale McGee going to Dallas and Jae Crowder refusing to play), Chris Paul taking a significant step back with age, a notable obsession with playing Landry Shamet heavy minutes, and worst of all our team being riddled with injuries to every player not named Mikal Bridges, with Devin Booker obviously being the most damning absence.

Even with rougher circumstances than he was used to in previous seasons, the all bench lineups and the lack of timeouts to change the flow of games were the two main factors that led to Monty being fired, the way I saw it at least, but it doesn't hurt to have a championship level squad 3 years in a row and be out-coached in every series you play, win or loss, except that one first round series against the Lakers, where Vogel just kinda let Booker cook to his own demise.

All this to say, I didn't expect Monty to be this bad in Detroit, but with everything I hear about what he's been doing out there, it's exactly the same shit that cost him his job with the Suns.

  13. Say this to a suns fans "Monty Williams lineups don't make any sense from game to game"

SN: one thing I give Vogel credit for is his closing/4th quarter lineups make sense from a defensive to offensive to hot hand perspectivešŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

  14. My guess is that either Monty is experimenting with his flex picks, or Detroit's roster isn't a fit for Monty. A good coach isn't universal.
