But I wanna call out a coach yesterday. Oh, that gets tens of millions of engagements. That’s the ecosystem we live in. So do fans actually want to be educated or not?”

Who tf they supposed to ask?
Bro complaining the thing he did and in fact perpetuates by doing is more popular than breakdown analytics
Please don’t make it Stephen A job to educate people on basketball
The average person is dumb as shit lol
Doc coverage is JJ Redick analysis father
This also assumes every fan wants to be educated or provided this specific context. Some people just like drama. A lot more people, it appears.
Most fans don’t care and just want to be entertained and there is nothing more entertaining than outrage. Coach outrage, ref outrage, owner outrage, player outrage, just take your pick and point me in the right direction for this week.
lol JJ needs to quit his bitching. He knew what first take was about when he joined and now he’s trying to steer the discussion away to “basketball education” after he called out his ex coach on tv 🙄🙄 I’m starting to really get tired of this “I’m the smartest guy in the room” act
In JJ’s defense, this is a topic he is very passionate on. He has talked ad nauseum about how in-game commentators need to find a way to explain basketball fundamentals and plays during broadcasts. ik he can be a polarizing figure, but it does seem like his heart is in the right place.
Kids look up to these players as role models and pay attention to everything they do. It’s not necessarily the players role to be perfect at all times coz they’re also human and they make mistakes too but kids generally listen to whoever they look up to. Same concept with a lot of adults too.
Comparing the views between some shit he does on his podcast to comments he made on the world’s biggest sports platform is his first mistake. Plus drama is always gonna get eyes, regardless of field.
Kobe proved with Detail that there’s an audience who appreciates nuanced basketball discussion. Hell Zach Lowe gets plenty of traction out here. JJ just has to accept he’s not the guy who’s gonna single-handedly correct sports media
Fans aren’t educated because they don’t want to.
Look at r/nba, for example, which is the platform with the least amount of trolls in the nba community. 90% of r/nba users don’t watch games and all they care about is pushing their player/team’s agenda.
I liked the Zion breakdown. Would have been better with some game footage though.
Sports are just soap operas for men. Nobody can tell me I’m wrong.
JJ is right, but being on a trash show like First Take where Stephen A. and Chris Russo are just sports rage farmers doesn’t exactly help his case.
Okay but why Mad Dog pulling a fucking grinch smile this entire segment is my question.
JJ coming in hot!
He’s calling you out r/nba
He ain’t lying
Why is Stephen A dressed like The Rock from that pic with the fanny pack and tissue under his elbow?
A lot of ppl follow the nba as if it was a reality show, they don’t actually like basketball.
We love drama, and the ai know that.
lol dude got so heated he ripped his mic out of its pack. Poor audio guy turning up the mic’s around him in the hopes of picking up enough level. Respect for the hustle sir.
SAS showed up in his late 90’s The Rock outfit
The NBA is at such a huge cultural disadvantage from football for a lot of reasons (number of games, access to games, lack of a ‘Big Game’ event) so they’ve calculated that the best way to stay relevant is to pander to social media. It’s fun in some ways like the Inside the NBA guys, but in a lot of ways it is so fucking lame and embarrassing. The amount of times that a hack of an opinion makes the top of this sub versus an amazing breakdown of a play is just sad
He’s right
I mean he’s right lol. Sports media today is all about drama and everything that happens off the court rather than analyzing the game. Wouldn’t it be nice to hear former pros have intelligent conversations about in game strategy and the actions being run? Leave the drama and off the court talk to the ones who aren’t former pros.
The exception being when the former pros start talking about locker room and travel stories. I could listen to that stuff all day.
Edit: that’s what I love about JJ’s pod. It’s a nice blend of him and his interviewee sharing stories but also talking specifics regarding shooting form, footwork coming off screens, actions, etc
I love when jj is on he be killing those dudes on FT 😂😂
KD tried going into a twitter space to educate fans and he was told he didn’t know what he was talking about
Fans don’t want to learn the game
NBA discourse sucks!
I’m a fan of the NBA, but I’m more casual. I’d appreciate if commentators would break things down more often. Nope. Straight to ads then back to the game.
