Rick Adelman Joins Trail Blazers Broadcast | Portland Trail Blazers
Hall of Fame Coach Rick Adelman is with us here tonight visiting in Arena watching the Blazers and the Denver Nuggets coach it is outstanding to see you here and I know it’s belated but congratulations on the Hall of Fame induction I know it’s been a couple of years but welld deserved I appreciate
That yep and loved watching those teams all those years not only here in Portland but in Sacramento Minnesota and Houston along the way you’ve seemingly had success everywhere you went well you know that’s easy to do when you have good players I I had good players yeah
But here here’s the thing about that coach you can have good players but as we know good players at this level have enormous egos they all think they should play they all think they should have minutes and it’s one thing to have the talent but you have to be able to manage
Men uh yes you do what’s the secret to that well I think you just have to understand uh who you have and their talents and you have to put them in spots where they can succeed if you do that then they’re going to listen to you and they’re going
To try to do what you want you know if you don’t if you don’t put them where they succeed it’s going to be a problem well I just want to know how you got it out of that Terry Porter guy I never thought that was going to work yeah well
He was a tough one but uh no in fact he’s here tonight I saw a lot of guys tonight so it’s been a it’s been a fun night I usually don’t come to the games but I got a sun coaching the other team
I hate to say that but uh so I’m here to watch him too you know speaking of that I I asked Michael Malone before the ball game tonight about the fact that he’s got Ryan your son on the bench right and he’s got Flip’s son on the bench as well
Um here’s what he had to say listen to this comment from coach Michael Malone I think it was last year during the finals the NBA honored Rick Alman and being able to spend some time with him there and talk to him um you know
Was a was a was a treat for myself and obviously David has taken a lot of everything he’s learned from his dad and tried to use it to forge his own career and it definitely helps me a ton on a night and a night out basis so congratulations to coach
Adam yeah Rick and and I asked him I said do you still run some of Rick stuff he says oh absolutely well you know what they got a number 15 on their team that works pretty good with that stuff well yeah and in a historical context coach talk about joic a little
Bit if you would I mean he’s like I would say that he’s he’s unlike any other player we’ve seen come along would you no he’s he’s special I I say he’s he makes the game enjoyable for me to watch and the way he plays and the way he conducts himself I
Think uh it’s just real tribute I’ve never seen a guy pass the ball the way he passes the ball I don’t care if it’s a guard forward Center he he’s just unbelievable and he makes the game Look So Easy he just made a shot just now
That’s not an easy shot it is for him but it’s not for everybody else so you know it’s kind of the thing I like about what David tells me is he’s a great teammate he’s also a great guy to coach so that that’s Mak it special coach
Along those lines our very own coach chy bips he went on record saying he believes nicoa yic is the best passer the game has ever seen so when you put on your your coaches lens you see the game through that how would you defend against them how do you go about how
Would you go about game planning against this kind of talent that someone like you and Coach bips is saying we haven’t seen this kind of passer in the game well you don’t I don’t know what you can do you can try to limit what the times
He catches the ball but he’s going to hurt you either way because he’s so smart if you want to put a small guy on him you want to switch he’s going to post you up you know so I just think he he’s impossible to guard because the way he
Plays uh I don’t know I wish I wish I had him but I would have been a really good coach if I had uh coach you you obviously have got to enjoy the success of those other stops in your NBA career uh the way Minnesota has played this
Year uh certainly The Way Sacramento over the last couple of Seasons um it it’s been great to see those teams get back in their winning column both ironically had hadn’t enjoyed that success since you left them and now here we are this year seeing Minnesota play exteme extraordinarily well it’s good
For the league to see these teams back and uh and in attention oh there’s no doubt Minnesota is a very very good team uh they don’t get enough they don’t get talked about enough Oklahoma City either but Sacramento I’m really glad because Portland and Sacramento are so similar
With their fans the fan base is just incredible when you coach there you really appreciate it when you play there you appreciate it so I’m just glad to see those teams doing well and their fans are having a good time how has this game changed from let’s say those years
You had with the Blazers in the early ’90s when you you know you went to three consecutive Western Conference finals went to two finals of course separated by that that one year what’s the biggest change you suppose oh it’s a three-point shot there’s no doubt uh it’s just just
A weapon that everybody uses most teams use it and uh we did not use it that much uh Terry tried to use it a lot uh not that we we planned for it but he didn’t uh but when you have Shooters like they have now it’s really special but that’s
Why I like the Denver team they they shoot the threes but they pass the ball they move they cut and it’s just a fun way to play basketball as the Blazers there’s another thing yeah that’s Michael Porter Jr doing what he does better as the the Blazers are in this
Rebuilding phase what advice would you give to any franchise at his rebuilding well I told chy before the game that he I love I love the Young guys they have I think they’ve really done a good job they played very hard and uh I think they got a great future the problem with
Young people is they can be great for a half then the next half the walls fall in on them and they just they like they in two games against Denver they were up on Denver both games second half Denver took over they just same shots weren’t
Fallen and I think that’s what you get with young people and Denver’s having that problem off the Ben bench very young guys are up and down and you never know what you’re going to get uh but uh you know they’ll come around I I like what ch’s doing with them I like what
They’ve done and just got to give them some time well there you are just a moment ago or before the game with chy and of course Jeff Petri one of the original Blazers fourth pick in the draft coming out of pron a tremendous score and later an executive in
Sacramento he wasn’t he the guy that got you to Sacramento yes he was in the Jeff and I have been together a long time we talked about it we’re best of friends uh we used to be roommates and we’ve been together about 20 years in the NBA so
Between Portland and Sacramento uh it’s been a special relationship and I was really happy that he showed up tonight I did not expect it it was just complete surprise oh wow oh that’s fantastic we’re glad that more and more Blazers are coming back visiting us this year giving us that knowledge glean through
Years and years uh I know you have a special place in your heart for chamka Community College in Salem did I pronounce that correctly no you didn’t okay I do I screw it all it’s all right it it’s hard to do just J there you go J
And that’s where Jack Ramsey was kind of following your coaching career right yes he was I I never never knew that so he called me he said that are you interested to being assistant yeah I thank you interested uh but I did not know he was
Following my team but that was Jack he’s one of the greatest coaches in the NBA history and a great friend of mine uh I miss him I miss him every day and he gave me an opportunity and Paul Al gave me an opportunity so part is really
Special with me coach we’ll let you enjoy the game but we appreciate you stopping by talking to us tonight it sure meant a lot for you to share time with us I say one thing yes sir my wife’s home her name is Mary Kay that want say hi Mary Kay

Great man.
I guess Rick Adelman has never seen Arvydas Sabonis pass the basketball…
The former Seattle Sonics announcer is interviewing the former Blazers coach who has a son on the Denver Nuggets coaching staff who are playing the Blazers, coached by Billups, a former Nugget. Former Sonics announcer is rooting for Blazers while former Blazers coach is rooting for Nuggets, and former Nugget is coach of Blazers. Former Blazer Terry Porter roams in the background while OG Blazer Geoff Petrie is also in attendance. ๐ค
Greatest coach ever
Rick was coach when I first started watching Blazers games – for free – on local tv. Ah the good ol days.
Thanks, Coach!
