Cade Cunningham Comments After Detroit Pistons Loss Show The Developments Of A Terrible Season
Simone fonio and K Cottingham tried to lead the Detroit Pistons to the win with their three-point shooting but they were not able to pull it out against the Miami Heat went right wrong for the Detroit Pistons at the end of this game we’ll talk about that in today’s episode of the lockdown Pistons

Storying lineup which contined to struggle in this Miami Heat game we’ll talk about that I want to talk about Monty Williams rotations in this game we’ll talk about that later on as well all there since I clicked the record button there have been a few quotes that
Have come out that we’ll talk about the game we’ll talk about Kade and and fonio three-point shooting and we’ll reference some other quotes by the way from Monty Williams which absolutely I have to talk about um but I I just saw a quote like not not after I hit record probably like
A minute before I hit record um from Kade Cunningham this is not good this is not good if you guys remember like two months ago when the Pistons were at the end of their losing Shak it was like game 25 or 26 I came on the podcast I
Talked about that I talked about JJ reick and Tim legler when they went on their podcast and they talked about when they were on teams bad like this what happens what happens to Young teams that are this bad for this long in this individual season threat threatening
Historic losing like that kind of stuff because Tim had been on one in 1994 I believe he said um and he he went through the phases of what ends up happening and remember I I said phase four was on the way back in De now we
Hadn’t seen it yet but I said phase four is next and basically what phase four was was what Tim legler mentioned was at some point in the season players start to they they don’t they start to not care about losing maybe not care is the wrong it doesn’t affect them like it
Starts to it just becomes like sick nature like oh yeah we’re we’re losing I mean that’s what we do every day it is what it is like that kind of thing it’s not that they don’t care about losing it’s not that they they don’t want to
Win it’s just that when they lose it’s just like well you know that’s just every day here it is what it is and then that turns then into their season being more okay well now I’m just playing for myself now I’m just playing for perfecting my game now I’m just playing
For myself to to do what I got to do whether whether we win or not it is what but now I now I’m just focused on myself it is what it is see season’s lost now I’m just focused on myself and that’s how you lead to bad locker rooms that’s
How you lead to bad offense on the floor miscommunication losing a team that that’s when you start hearing that stuff about coaches losing a team like all that stuff that’s where all this stems from that that kind of idea after the game this was K Cunningham’s quote he
Was asked if they can walk away with some pride since they competed but lost still and like I said about Cade Cade is never going to come out and just flat out like like like go crazy like he’s never come out and say something blatantly like I remember
I said a few weeks ago the most criticism you’ll get from him is when they asked him about turnovers and he was like well spacing would the spacing on the floor would help minimize some turnovers like that was his best way of saying spacing sucks we need to we need
To get some shoes out here he won’t come out and say that but that’s like his best way of saying it he’s more passive with it and that’s what he was here they asked him about that taking Pride away when they lose um but compete he said
Quote this year has reshaped my thinking on this that I work on perfecting my craft at this point I think that’s where we’re all at that that’s bad that that is bad and I’m not saying that’s bad on Cade for saying that that’s not what I’m saying
I’m saying this is where the team’s got now this is bad this is where this locker room has gone now this is where this season has gone this is where these players have gotten at this is what happens when you put a team together like this allow a type of season this to
Get this bad surround them with these type of players and fail your jobs like the Pistons had done this season this is what ends up happening and this will lead to bigger issues this is what happens this is what again I I I’ll I’ll reference the
Podcast you guys need to go listen to it because I think Tim legler does a great job walking through exactly how things go when you’re losing like this he walk through all the different phases and we’ve seen all of them happen with the Pistons like he I think he did a
Incredible job so I recommend you guys go listen to that but this is not great this is how you lead again to coaches losing the locker room this is how you lead to guys developing bad habits because now they’re just looking at the games as practice basically they’re
Working at looking at the games as ways for them to get better and try things out you that’s when you start to see maybe Jaylen durren take a few shots maybe he shouldn’t take this is when you see Jaylen Duren maybe take a fade away jumper maybe he shouldn’t take this is
When you see Jaye Ivy maybe take a shot he shouldn’t take this is where you see Kade maybe take a shot shouldn’t take try pass maybe he shouldn’t try this is where you see fono all of a sudden with the ball in his hands trying to do stuff
Even though he just got here like that that’s when you see stuff like this start to happen this is not good like like they’ll probably try to walk this quote back you know they they’ll they’ll try to minimize this quote but but all the phases that this team has went
Through has matched everything they’ve talked about we our eyes work if they want to make it to where our ears don’t work our eyes work and we’ve seen this happen we’ve seen thisam team go through these phases this year on and off the court we’ve watched the body link like
We can see this this is not great this is this is this is not great I the Pistons are at a point I believe that in order for them to turn this thing around in the offseason I almost think they need just clean slate completely like I
I think the culture is getting to a point where yes they have good men in the locker room they have good people in the locker room but the culture basketball-wise is going real south it’s it’s just I don’t think it’s I I I did not that that quote was was
Was tough to see because because we hadn’t seen them get to face four yet we haven’t seen him get to that point yet at least like wordswise some people may have been pointing out I pointed out this durren you know maybe doing some things offensively he shouldn’t be
Trying to do few weeks ago um so maybe it already has been going on but yeah I I that quote was uh it is what it is I I and again let me make this clear this is is not a bad this is not a thing to knock on Cade
Or knock on Ivy or knock on Duren orar or F or any of them that’s not it’s not on them this is not an indictment on them this is an indictment on the organization on the front office on the coaching staff because they put them put these players these young guys in the
Situation where winning basically doesn’t matter now and they have no chance at winning half the time and now they just take losing as second nature and that’s not on them that’s not on that’s on the people that are supposed to be managing them and developing them and growing them like that’s that’s not
On them so I’m happy Kate came out and said this because now it just confirms what our eyes have been telling us to me that’s what that does I I it’s it’s I it is what it is this topic lasted way too long but I I I
Had to talk about it because I did not like seeing I I like the fact that Kate said it because again like I said it confirmed what my eyes saw but the fact that this team has gone to this point it’s just like I don’t think anyone
Could have seen that coming before the year like I don’t think anyone thought that it this would happen like it would get to this it’s It’s just tough man It’s just tough you hate to see it you absolutely hate to see it for these young guys like
I feel so bad for K Cunningham I feel so bad for Jay and Ivy I feel bad for Jaylen Duren I feel awful for assar Thompson these guys are not have not been this season have not been put in positions that are good for their careers they are good for their
Development moving forward it’s I feel bad for him I feel bad for him it’s just not it’s it’s not great we’ll briefly touch on Monty’s quote that I wanted to talk about and then we’ll move on to the starting lineup because that took way too long
Just now before the game Monty was asked about you know starting this starting lineup and whether they need to generate threes whatever um and his quote was um some programs their Benchmark is 43s we don’t look at it that way we’ve I’ve always told the guys play their
Strengths I’m okay with guys taking twos as long as they’re efficient I’m not sold on that you have to go into the game and say you got to get 35 threes up what if you guys can’t shoot you’re just going to take a lot of bad shots that’s never been my Approach end
Quote the Pistons I look man this is this is what I’m going to say I’m sure most of you guys already understand this but I’ll say for those of you guys may not understand spacing is not the most efficient I people talk about analytics all the time i’ I’ve
Ranted about this on the podcast before everyone complains about anal analytics ruining basketball it hasn’t but everyone talks about analytics and all they can all they talk about with analytics is the three ball what those people don’t understand is that anal analytics my goodness can I say it say
That the most efficient shot in basketball is a layup is a shot right at The Rim that is the most efficient shot in basketball and if you can get that shot every time that’s that’s a great off if you can get an open layup every time that’s a great offense that’s the
Most efficient play in basketball all analytics has helped people discover after 2015 I guess or whatever you want to point to it maybe you want to go back to the Suns with dantony late 2000s but all that that’s helped is that Monte says that they don’t want to
Have a benchmark of Threes you know we will take twos do do they understand that like I mean this seriously do you understand that spacing isn’t just to get threes up having spacing on the floor having guys that are threed to shoot threes and getting threes up opens
Up the ability to get those efficient twos you’re talking about otherwise the twos that you’re telling players to play to their strengths because they can’t shoot threes we’ll just take twos what you’re really saying is we don’t want to take open threes we’ll rather take contested twos like that that’s what
That is the Pistons are like actively saying that they want to build their offense around contested twos spacing does not just generate open threes even though that’s great basketball I that’s the reason why the pist were in this game because Kate and fono were hitting
Threes at a high clip and it kept them in the game that’s the only reason why the Pistons were in this game because Kaden fono hit like 12 threes that’s the only reason why but anyways it’s not just to get threes up it’s not to get
400 threes up in a game it’s that those space in having spacing and having those three-point Shooters opens up driving lanes and the rim for your drivers for your ball handlers so they can get efficient twos which should be the goal of the offense is to get open layups for
Kad and for Ivy you want to know what Ivy’s been struggling Ivy’s been struggling massively he’s taking a lot of Threes he’s not making a lot of Threes you want to know what would help him if he could get to the r and get some easy
Baskets what I what I tell you guys the first the first podcast after they went with the starting lineup what did I say to you guys I said the only way that this lineup has a chance in hell at succeeding the only way Kate has a chance in hell at succeeding in this
Lineup is if he remains on a heater from three and in this the previous three games he was on a heater for three and guess what efficiency down this game he hit four threes he shot four of a from three he shot uh four or 12 on twos now I know two of
Those shots maybe a goal 10 and a clear foul but either way he’s not getting all the way to the rim as much and he’s not getting all getting layups off so look I just want to make this clear to everyone that that saw that quote and anyone that’s listening you do not
Want let me just maybe this is a better way to say it you need spacing you need Shooters because the way you generate efficient twos that Monty was talking about is not by putting three more players closer to the rim like that I promise you that’s not how it’s going to
Work in 2024 putting more players closer to the rim is not going to then translate to getting easier shots closer to the rim I promise you that’s not how it works spacing the floor out having open driving Lanes creates easy layups and efficient twos you don’t have that
You end up in inefficient contested twos and tough threes that’s what you end up in and that’s when you efficiency tanks and that’s what we’ve seen with Kaden Ivy over the last four or five games I had to talk about those two quotes because it set me off I I like I
Couldn’t believe it like I it is what it is when we come back I want to talk about the staring lamp and how they played in this game against the Miami Heat we’ll talk about that when we come back passion drive and patience what brings home the winning trophy is also

Podcast so so that first segment I’m sorry I went a little too long with Cade’s quote um I do want to make it clear again though I am not was not trying to go at any of the players it’s not on the players at all I’m happy that
He said it it’s it I was directly talking about the culture that’s being built and the situation those players have been put in how tough that’s now been on them and what causes what comes of thatc like the results of that um but I apologize for making that go a little
Bit longer um maybe you guys enjoyed it though so I don’t know um anyways the starring lineup of Kade Ivy assar Stu and dur I ranted about it on the last podcast for the first like 13 minutes at the Pod um yeah you guys know my feelings on it I think I don’t
Think there’s many fans that that support this St line I think most fans agree with me um they played obviously that starting lamp again against the Miami Heat the Pistons lost by eight that starting lineup played 15 minutes together they were outscored by seven points in an eight-point game I’ll say it
Again Cade Duren Stu Ivy and assar played 15 minutes or close to 16 minutes and we’re outscored by seven in their minutes now some people may be saying to me cou just looking at Short samples like 15 minutes in a single game you know that it can be a little bit wonky
It may change game to game yeah you know that might be fair in certain situations but when the sample All Season like I broke down the samples and the numbers on the podcast when every single game of the season that lineup is getting outscored and every single game all
Season the trio of assar Thompson isaah Stewart and Jaylen dur has been atrocious every single game besides the the only game that they did not get destroyed in was the game the opposing team shot two of 29 from Deep the worst percentage in 2014 that’s the only time
They did not get destroyed with that lineup it’s the only time every other sample so far this year continues to show it does not work and this game against the Miami Heat continue to show it does not work you need spacing Monty if you don’t want to get up 503s that’s
Fine if you don’t want to get up 45 threes that’s fine you don’t want to get up 35 threes that’s fine but I promise you simply having the shooters that are threats to get that many threes up on the floor opens up driving lanes for your best players it will generate
Better offense it will generate better defense because you can then get into the half court set that you speak about a lot Monty talks about that he wants to get into his half court set defensively well you can’t do that if you’re turning the ball over and missing shots and not
Getting made buckets it’s harder to do that when you don’t make shots so if they can generate good offense and make their shots and get back in the half court that would help so this is just another just another game that the Piston starting lineup continues to get
Outscored and that lineup will continue to get outscored you want know how I know that because literally every other data point that we have throughout this entire season where three quarters into the season says that will happen that’s how I know that and and the thing that’s funny that
We’re going to switch to here the thing that makes it even more funny to me look at the star the the not the staring lineup but look at the lineup That Monty closed with now he changed it with about a minute left um because I he had just
Made a crucial turnover and they were he was struggling defensively in that last minute I he wanted to get Isaiah Stewart on Jimmy Butler so okay whatever final final minute but like the previous five minutes you know who they were closing with to win the game by the way to you know
How they said a few weeks ago we’re playing to win we are trying to win games right now that’s the goal so in in the closing minutes in winning time to win the game you want to know the L that they Clos with that Monte chose to close
With Kade Ivy Simone fono Asar Thompson Jaylen dur you know I I wonder you know I don’t know I I may be off with this but I I think I remember that start that that lineup starting or something close to I think I think I remember that
Lineup starting and you know I think I remember that lineup when it started being the most balanced lineup of the Piston season having a plus four point8 net rating them having a top 10 defense and above average offense I I think I remember that lineup doing that and then
I also think the reason why they were losing games from that that lineup star was only because they were going 1112 deep playing fiveman bench bench lineups so it was almost like the starting lineup was working and if you got some players back and just rework the
Rotation they maybe could have won some games I maybe misremembering though I I’m pretty sure that happened I’m pretty sure that happened we’ve seen that lineup before I’m also pretty sure that someone on this podcast said that that lineup was the one they should start for
The rest of the year works for everybody and will give the Pistons best chance to succeed I don’t know I may be off at that I may be mising things but that’s the line they Clos with and it looked good that that’s that’s all I had to uh contribute to
That um yeah they play five minutes um I’m pretty sure all of those minutes came in the fourth quarter uh and yeah they were even with the Miami Heat so is what it is is what it is um but anyways yeah starting lineup continues to struggle it is what it is I don’t
Know how much longer they’re going to continue to go with this I I I actually I do know how long they’re going to continue to go with this they’re going to do it the rest of the year because they don’t I I I don’t know why but
They’re going to do it and Ivy’s I’m going to bet that Ivy is going to continue to struggle because he’s a streaky shooter um and not having space he going to kill them so I it is what it is um I do want to say this
Though there was some talk I saw in the Pistons Community after the game about the Pistons offense down the stretch and how they were trying to counter what Miami was doing I just want to break this down for you guys real quick um the Miami was on defense
Putting two on ball which is basically trapping so they were running the Pistons were running a lot of pick and roll and every time they would run a screen and roll with durren and Cade they were trapping Cade every single time Kade was torturing them through the first three quarters then the fourth
Quarter they basically determined and the broadcast Special K he talked about it a little bit he basically said someone else is GNA haveit to BS Kate’s not gonna B us we’re trapping him getting the ball out his hands so basically I know a lot of Pistons fans
Were upset there I I saw a lot of Pistons fans saying there’s no ball movement people aren’t moving what’s going on why their offense like this this is basically the thought process I’m going to assume from Monty Williams which I understand the Miami Heat strategy was we’re gonna get the
Ball out of K Cunningham’s hands and we’ll think we’ll win that game the counter from Monty Williams basically and I think probably I think there’s a decent amount of head coaches that probably would think the same is that okay if you’re gonna take the ball if
You’re gonna put two on Ball and get the ball out of my best player’s hands and we have a four and three in the backside we’ll take that then we think we can win with the four and thre in the backside consistently which is what they did they
They just kept running pick and roll get in that trap AIS on Cade and then Cade would make a decision out of it they get on a four and three situation and they trusted that they would get a good open shot and they could beat the Heat doing
That um the problem with that that that plan in of itself is fine I think that’s a fine plan to have um especially if you’re going to use like Kate’s gravity that’s that’s part of Kate’s gravity is that if he’s going to be playing well and teams want the ball his hands is
Giving you at four and three Advantage he’s done his job the problem I have that I think the Pistons are going to continue to run into is that for example like if you look in the heat on the other side the heat were hunting out mismatches for Jimmy and then when the
Pistons brought to to the ball Jimmy was kicking out to Terry ozir he was kicking out to Duncan Robinson he was kicking out to Caleb Martin like these are the guys he’s kicking out to and the only reason why the pistes were in this game in the fourth quarter is because the
Heat who were shooting the lights out before the fourth quarter started off 0 of nine in the fourth quarter that’s the only reason why they they were getting open threes they just couldn’t hit them in the fourth and I think Duncan Robinson had back-to-back threes that really extend the lead and then Terry
Oir hit another one so and then obviously Jimmy hit the the dagger um but basically if you what I’m trying to say is if you compare both both of those when when teams bring two to the ball against Jimmy he’s kicking out against high quality Shooters when teams bring
Two to the ball against Cade it’s not like he has many options around him he was on the floor with Stu assar and Duren or Ivy who is shooting really bad from De I believe like 20% over the last 20 games or something something like that he’s shooting really bad um Ivy
Stu or Ivy I’m sorry Ivy assar durren and then the only other option was fono which for what’s worth the Pistons were trying to get fonio on the strong side with that so when they did bring uh when they did trap him K could try to look
Off the the the tagging Defender and hit either fonio or dur roll into the rim that basically was their plan and they did get open threes for fono but if they had more options on the floor to really space out that defense where they have four on three advantages if you have
Shooters in the corner corner and the wing when they do that or if you have yeah actually yes corner corner Wing kage drops it to durren and now durren has an option to kick out to Shooters all over the place or dunk the basketball like then you really can make
Teams pay for putting two on the ball I think that’s and you saw that heat go to a zone defense against the pist late too and basically what Eric sper was saying was if you guys think you can be us four and three great we don’t believe you can
We don’t believe assar Thompson will make us pay we don’t believe Isaiah Stewart will make us pay and we don’t think that fonio will hit enough of those or we’ll take away from feko enough to where your offense won’t beat us that’s basically the bet that spoler
Made and and it was the right bet it won the game it won the the heat the game so I I think the Pistons are going to continue to run into this problem with this team however like this year next year they’re going to continue to run into this problem the longer they
Continue to try act like it’s 2001 and or 2004 even and act like they don’t need spacing like the longer that continues on like that’s the that you’re gonna continue to run into those kind of problems I I I don’t know what to tell
You it is what it is um but that’s all I’ve got on that let me know what you guys thought about everything I said in there we talked about a lot right there so let me know what you guys think comment section down below or over on

You’re listening to us on that’s another great way to support the podcast this isn’t going to last long um just wanted to briefly touch on just briefly touch on the rotation that that Monty Williams utilized in this game um they they went back to James wisman as
The backup five and I’m not completely sure why I don’t think James played terrible um but we you know after the last podcast or the last game we recorded and we talked about how they were finally running Stu at the backup five and how good that looked and how
You were able to you saw Stu play really really well like he was playing extremely well in that situation he was you know him having having the ability to attack fives off Closeouts is much better and much different than him having to attack a Jimmy Butler off a
Closeout which you saw tonight did not go well at all um him having to shoot against a closing out five is much easier than shooting at closing out Jimmy Butler or something like you saw tonight they were actually respecting some of St shots or some of his presence
Tonight and he shot one of four because they weren’t just straight up wide open threes um like and we’ll talk about the defense as well as him with him at the five like every do run smoothly with him at the five in the backup unit and Monty
Himself talked about it um at the game I was at after the Cavs game when he said that getting St minutes at the five with the with the bench is a priority of theirs and one game later they’re they like they didn’t do it they just went away from it completely so I
Don’t I truly don’t know like what the like like what the processes they go through with like their rotations like what determines what they’re going to do every night I truly don’t because they tell us one thing and then do another and then it’s I I I don’t
Know I I like I don’t I I’m not I’m not completely sure what be going on so I don’t know why that was the case but moving forward I think the only issue I have with the rotation they used against the Miami Heat was giving Monty or James
Wisman the back of five minutes instead of running Stu at the five again and letting Stu play his best position which is the back of five um and then obviously the starting lineup which is either move Stu or assaro but we’ve talked about that enough outside of that
I didn’t have a problem with the rotation they’re down to a ninan rotation they’re not playing 10 11 guys um the nine guys that played were Fon okay Duren Stu Ivy assar wisan Sasser and forier don’t have any problems with that I know Grimes is out they’re
Probably going to go to a 10man rotation when Grimes comes back we’ll probably see fiveman Ro fiveman bench LS again I like I’m I’m ready for that instead of just taking forier forier out or wisan out and then putting Grimes in and running stew at the back of five I don’t
Assume they’re going to do that we’ll probably see a 10 minute rotation so at that point I’ll give my thoughts but so far you know those two things are my biggest gripes but I thought this rotation was fine I I guess for the most part don’t know why they go away from
Ste with the back of five I I couldn’t tell you guys but is what it is um let me know what you guys think comment section down below or over on Twitter at CER Hill that’s all I’ve got for guys today thank you guys for Mak lock on

Cade Cunningham had some interesting quotes after the Detroit Pistons loss to the Miami Heat. This quote showcases, whether the Cunningham and his teammates meant to or not, what happens to the psyche of players during a season like this one.
