Led by Trey Murphy in a way I don’t actually want to say it was led by Trey Murphy but Trey Murphy went off in the game you’ll get what I mean in a second here when I say I don’t want to say it was led by him right Trey Murphy Off the

Bench in under 30 minutes of action 34 points on 17 shots he basically scored two points per possession two points per shot that’s insane get this number he was 10 of 14 from three 10 of 14 from three that is an absurd number the Pelicans in this game took 49

Three-point attempts they almost took 53s in this game and they won by 41 points it’s not a coincidence there that that happened by the way the Pelicans average three-point attempts this season is 32.3 17 more attempts than normal for this team and that’s a really important thing Shooters what you saw the Toronto

Raptors do is something that I have said a long time if you’re in everyday or or just a long long time listener going back like three four seasons now you’ve heard me say this before you can’t space the court for Zion Williamson you can’t and this game showed you what happens

When teams build a wall they built a wall around Zion basically all night he still had a good game we’ll get into that in the next segment a little bit too here but they built a wall all night and were terrified of Zion Williamson beating them they put two three four

Five defenders in front of him to limit him going to the rim he took just 11 shot attempts didn’t really need to when the team is up by as many as they are and he only plays 26 minutes in this one by the way he had a near triple double

16 points nine assists eight rebounds they built a wall around him and they left guys like herb Jones wide open from three herb Jones is five of eight we’ll get more on him in the next segment five of eight from three in this one CJ McCullum in the starting lineup three of

Nine and then Trey Murphy wide open every time he took a three off of Z having the ball basically anytime they kicked it out to Trey Murphy he was wide open because his Defender was cheating and helping on Zion Williamson and they left Trey wide open to do that Trey

Murphy is a sharp shooter he is a sniper a dead eye whatever word you want to use to describe a really good three-point shooter and the Toronto Raptors were willingly leaving him wide open because they are scared to death of Zion Williamson this is why I have long said

And the Toronto Raptor showed it to you you can’t space the court for Zion Williamson because of what he does at The Rim being so Elite and so good and so efficient you’d rather deal with Trey Murphy going 10 of 14 and if he does

That you shrug and go well we kind of played the odds and it just didn’t work out in our favor they left Trey Murphy wide open what are you doing here Toronto play after play it was like they didn’t learn the lesson because their game plan was

Stop Zion Williamson so even with a guy who’s going 10 of 14 from three a guy on the court going five of eight in herb Jones herb is like automatic right now it didn’t matter they’re going to double triple quadruple I I don’t know what like five

People is that pent pent team Zion Williamson is that what that is you know in instead of covering the shooters it is impossible to space the court for Zion Williamson so what you need to do is put guys on the court that will make teams pay for the way they defend Zion

You want to build a wall against him we’re going to beat you with our other sh Shooters when you have herb Jones Trey Murphy CJ McCullum all being good three-point Shooters on this team and in case of some of them like excellent three-point Shooters right herb Jones

Going into this game it’s going to be higher now was 43% on the season CJ McCullum is 42 a half% on the season Trey Murphy’s number is lower but that’s skyrocketing after 10 of 14 right they left all those guys open to defend Zion Williamson you can’t space the court for

Him but you can make teams pay for what they do the Pelicans did that in this game it’s the definition of pick your poison guard Zion leave open good three-point Shooters and by the way they had two on the bench they didn’t Us in this in Jordan Hawkins and Matt Ryan

They got minutes in garbage time but didn’t play with Zion right they had two other Shooters they could have used if one of these guys was a little bit cold now I’m not saying you do that but you get what I’m saying there’s more shooting on the bench that’s incredible

So guard Zion leave the shooters open guard the shooters give Zion space to attack he was hyper efficient here right 16 points on 11 shots is good he was seven for 11 eight rebounds nine assists those are really good numbers hyper efficient if you gave him more space he

Could have killed this team he was a A plus 28 which was the best out of the starters here Trey Murphy by the way off the bench was a plus 44 which is just frankly insane to think about in under 30 minutes of action right every minute

He was on the court they were winning by more than a point which is wild to say out loud when these shooters are hitting shots like this there’s no way to defend this team there’s no way to defend this team and then it leads into good defense

More on that in a minute here right and this is something I’ve long said really good defense or sorry really good offense really good offense is going to lead to even better defense the Pelicans can get back get set and defend at a high level which they do

Lets herb Jones not have to defend in transition great he can wreck havoc he did in this game right he’s been amazing this season two steals here for him in this one right the Toronto Raptors were held under a 100 points I don’t care that they’re tanking him without a bunch

Of people that is hard to do to hold a team under a 100 in today’s NBA and the Pelicans did it and again it goes back to the game against the Toronto uh the Indiana Pacers the two games there right what did we say about that your offense

Gets going your defense can get back get set get stops which then fuels your offense even more the Pelicans by getting stopped not through turnovers this time just forcing misses had 27 fast break points Toronto only had 11 turnovers that was New Orleans grabbing misses and running because they were forcing stops

In defensive rebounding here and it makes the offense even scarier which then makes their defense scarier and these things feed off of one another and so when the guys are hitting their threes or they’re spacing the court for Zion which they aren’t in this one right

And Zion gets going it’s all gravy it’s all Lan Yap here we’re going to be happy about that and the Pelicans are going to win that’s what you saw in this game that was an incredible performance shooting performance from this team overall by the way the final numbers

Were where did it go the box score 24 of 49 49% from three that’ll work that’ll absolutely work good luck to any team Denver Nuggets Minnesota Timberwolves clip the the Thunder when they’re on like this this team is one of the toughest teams to beat in the league because the

Defense can be elite and then the offense is Elite that’s why we screaming lean into that more so let’s get more into herb Jones though there were a couple things they did here which I found really interesting that also ties into the spacing aspect that we’re talking about here in the three-point

Curry and Clay Trey and Herb are the new Splash Brothers you’re not incorrect right now right I saw uh Steph Curry airball two threes in that loss that dismantling you want to talk about a big win what the the Boston Celtics did to the Golden State Warriors the other night was like

I had to double check if that was like a real score with everything um so yeah new Splash Brothers here in New Orleans that was just a fun game threes all of that everything just working in unison holding the team under a 100 points the opponent under 100 points I want to talk

About something we saw early on in this game because herb Jones was has been good all season right like we know that herb Jones has been amazing all season long for this Pelicans team and has been outstanding and we just love everything something just like broke in another

Room and we are going to just do this show and keep on going here that was weird um her Jones has been great but to go five of eight from three 62 and a half% in this game was just phenomenal right like he lit it up he had 14 points

In the first quarter was kind of pacing the New Orleans Pelicans here one of the things I’ve said and I’ve talked about it with spacing right like you you space the court when defenses shift guys to you when you bend the defense in a sense when they Mark you and make sure always

Defended or you always have someone on you right they shift their coverage to you any words you want to use it all means the same thing they’re paying attention to you out there on the perimeter that’s spacing right they don’t do that for herb Jones this season

Maybe that’s just more of his overall reputation you know being under 40% his first couple of years in the league but this year he has exploded right he is number one in three-point percentage since January 1st I believe is the exact stat he’s doing it on good volume a to attempts is a

Pretty significant number for him from three so seeing all of that and seeing it all come together is great but he’s not a court spacer right they’re not defending him like that it doesn’t open up room for Zion Williamson he’s there to make teams pay for the way that they

Are defending Zion which I’m cool with that’s all you can ask for I have no problem with what he’s doing no complaints right like make it very clear that that’s not happening here but the Pelicans are starting to do some very interesting things here with his shooting from three that is actually

Going to make teams really start to account for him and this is coaching this is smart this is Willie Green James bgo the rest of the coaching staff too Fred vincon working with herbon is shot to improve it you’re seeing them run actions and plays for him off ball right

And Antonio Daniels highlighted it in the first quarter of this game where they had Larry n Jr just set a back screen on herb Jones’s guy as Brandon Ingram drove it’s essentially just an you know without getting into the technical details it’s an off ball screen right they moved herb Jones they

Had Larry n Jr just kind of stayed in place so that when Brandon Ingram passed the ball to Herb Jones Larry was there in between herbs herbs Defender and Herb which just created space for him took the guy out of the play right just setting a pick that’s all you’re doing

Here herb Jones caught that ball launched the three was an insanely insanely good pass by the way by brandan and Ingram on this one but they’ve been doing that a lot more now that there is some confidence in herb Jones draining threes run off ball actions for him he’s

A very good cutter a willing cutter willing to kind of do a lot of that work that tires you out but that’s like herb Jones right leading by example doing all of the nitty-gritty Dirty Work hustle type stuff cutting doesn’t nearly get some of the excitement as a maid three

Or a dunk or something like that but it’s a real useful skill to have but because it’s not a highlight worthy thing a lot of guys just don’t do that sort of stuff but herb Jones is running around making Defenders move all of those things the fact that he has a

Credible three-point shot and you can run those actions if he was running to the corner before do you need to defend it no here do you need to at least consider it a little bit Yeah because he’s become such a good three-point shooter and with those off ball actions

That’s either going to give him more open three-point looks or it’s going to let Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram and even CJ attacked the basket more so that adds a wrinkle to this offense another layer that wasn’t before because of the growth from a guy like herb Jones

One of the things that I also love that the Pelicans are doing right now and you saw this on social media they’re already promoting him for First Team all defense I love that you know in years past they used to promote guys like Anthony Davis and Drew holiday a lot sending stuff to

Voters different things like that you know promotional items things like that to get kind of those guys on people’s minds creating a logo which they did and look their social media team their graphic team is amazing has been amazing for a while doing something like that now getting people to kind of recognize

The defense that herb Jones is playing particularly after holding Tyrese hurn to zero points on Friday which was incredible I love that promote the heck out of this guy don’t ever trade him please cuz his contract is going to look unbelievably incredible in the future signing him to that deal now which put

Them in a little bit of a salary Capt crunch this season right ends up being the smartest move you could do instead of letting him become a free agent this season which would have saved them needing to make that salary trade dump of Kyo Lewis Jr well worth the picks and

Stuff that they included with Kyo Lewis Jr to dump him to Toronto now in order to get herb Jones on a four-year deal that’s going to look massively underpaid especially with the offense in the three-point shooting that he is providing you he will not win most improved player I don’t even know if

He’ll get significant votes for it but You could argue that with the way he’s jumped on offense with the three-point shooting is pretty incredible in my opinion he wasn’t bad last year with working off ball and scoring at the rim and doing other things but the three-point shooting and how important

That is in today’s NBA is just absolutely awesome awesome to see his his free throw percentage has gone up significantly compared to last season to Herb Jones has just been amazing but adding in those plays where you can run him off ball spring him open for three

And different things like that I think really makes this team just adds more wrinkles right like that makes you even scarier for teams to defend and I think it’s a pretty incredible thing that they’re able to start to work into this team again offense their defense is

Going to be good no matter who’s out there on the court but if you can make these guys even better on offense that defense is going to rise right going into this game and we’ll see how these numbers change tomorrow I hasn’t updated yet right pcons were 12th best offense

Seventh best on defense that might go up a tick this after this game they’ve in general and this is eighth best the season I I don’t love points per game I prefer offensive rating and defensive rating but they’ve been giving up on average 1117 points per game that’s eighth best just gave up

98 think about that for a minute it’s because the offense is absolutely rolling in the way that it is right now that’s just an incredible thing it’s tied into you only gave up 102 to the Indiana Pacers right like that’s a pretty incredible number as well you

Held the New York Knicks to under 100 when they’re winning it’s because their offense is clicking they’re getting good quality games and then they’re holding guys and opponents under a 100 or close to 100 they only let the Houston Rockets ride out of the All-Star break score 105 but they scored

127 you know they average 116 that was 11 points more than their average this season the offense leads to really good defense because it allows your defense to get set then they can force turnovers they can get out and runoff misses because you’re able to contest shots and

13998 Zion had a quiet game didn’t need to do much right 16 points nine assists eight rebounds it’s like almost a triple double one assist two rebounds off that’s pretty great didn’t need him to do much you know when you do this when this happens like they didn’t need him

To do much against the Indiana Pacers when Brandon Ingram had that incredible game we’ll talk about bi in a second here I liked what we saw from from Zion in this one though willing passer reading the floor well one of the things I’ve said he needs to add a little bit

More of right is a little bit more hesitation game to his back you actually saw a good bit of it the kind of Shifting of gears and things like that exploding for Speed to go and attack the basket but taking a hop step where you kind of jump stop and then can survey

Because you’ve kind of moved around go up with the ball or pass out or get guys off balance I thought that was really good from him in this one that stop where he can then survey the court and make a quick read and pass the ball out really excellent to see that’s also

Going to let him draw fouls more absolutely let him draw fouls more when you get guys off balance throw in a pump fake go up they’re going to get off balance then you go up with the ball get that foul call sell it and go to the

Line you know he only went to the line twice in here but you saw him playing through contact better than he has I think at other times this season doesn’t help that Toronto is bad they’re tanking there’s only so much we want to read from this game but the concepts are

There so he was just good good attacking the point Zion thing led to all of those wide open Shooters you see why this works and why they want to do it and you still have two other Shooters on the bench that you didn’t even get to with

Zion here but linking Zion and TR minutes very very very smart to see just solid game from him that like if you kind of extrapolate it out he could have had a big one Brandon Ingram was also great in this one again he didn’t need to do much 12 points on seven shot

Attempts that’s good efficiency right there six assists three rebounds that was great you know what I loved about that is he made he was five of seven from the field four of those makes were in the restricted area aggressive Brandon Ingram getting into the teeth of the defense trying to score at the

Is the best version of brain Ingram I’ll take that over him shooting threes but if he’s not going to attack the basket you got to shoot threes you only took one attempt in this game it’s fine he also I don’t know who he just embarrassed on the Toronto Raptors but

Had them turned around and just completely blew by him for a monster dunk that was just the whole play the whole everything he did there was absolutely filthy when your two superstars are as effective as this it makes everyone’s life easier we overthink basketball sometimes this is

You a piece of advice I give give to to young guys shout out John by the way who met with me for coffee to like talk about this sort of stuff um as an Inspire aspiring like broadcaster Sports media person you know sometimes we overthink this right where okay let’s

Talk about the the 10th Man the 11th man the 12th man on the roster you’re carried by your stars in the NBA right trade this is why going back I’ll tie it all together going back into the beginning I said they were led by Trey and I’m like you know what no they

Weren’t led by Trey Murphy he might have been the highest leading scor here and making all the threes and is the headline they weren’t led by him they were led by Zion Williamson who was attacking and what Toronto was doing to defend him and then that left Trey

Murphy wide open who converted those shots they were led by Zion Williamson creating all of that space and everything same with Brandon Ingram too you go as far as your stars go when your stars are aggressive like this when they set the tone early yeah that’s a team

That’s going to win a lot of games again pick your poison Zion or Trey Murphy or Jordan Hawkins or C.J McCullum or herb Jones or Brandon Ingram right he’s a good three-point shooter too you can do all of this out there this team becomes near Unstoppable when that’s the case

And it makes their defense even better you also have Jonas valunas who just quietly put up 10 and 10 in this game like just doing doing doing just great blue collar work out there on the court right one of the things is I think he will be a liability in the playoffs

Defensively but there might be a time when you just need to rely on him and you could have done that in this one if they wanted to just feed him and let him go kind of to town with no yaka purle out there to defend him they would have been able to do

That so many options on this team right okay cool you take Zion and be away we’re going to rain threes on you or we’re just going to let a seven-footer who’s a Bruiser score in the paint against you there’s so many options on this team

Right now and I like seeing the you know the the in this one it was ninan rotation for the most part finally getting though some run for Jordan Hawkins for Matt Ryan shout out Isaiah Brockington for scoring his first NBA points Four Points in garbage time but

You know what that mattered and he looked aggressive and wanted to kind of like earn a spot make the most of those minutes and I absolutely love that attitude for him that was just a cool thing to see someone kind of live out their dream that way we’re all doing
