Collin Sexton is the story of the season for Utah Jazz Look at Chicago Bulls failed re build

If the story of last year’s season for the Utah Jazz was Lowry marinan then the story for this season is Colin sexon and we’re talking about it next on locked on Jazz you are locked on Jazz your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz part of the locked on podcast Network your team every

Day how are you I’m David lock radio voice Utah jazz jazz MBA Insider and this is locked on Jazz today colins Saxon is doing remarkable things in the last 39 games since being put in the starting lineup we’re going to look at it how many NBA players scored 20 points a game

Shoot 50% from the floor 40% from three on four attempts a game you’re gonna be stunned Taylor Hendrick injured out for at least a week not good at all a great night if you’re into draft position for the Jazz last night and we’ve been analyzing rebuilds how about the failed

Rebuild of the Chicago Bulls that maybe wasn’t so failed actually after all we’ll look at all those things as we get going on today’s edition of locked on Jazz as I mentioned I’m David lock radio voice to Utah jazz jazz NBA Insider and this is locked on Jazz your daily

Podcast of the Utah Jazz giving you Insight expertise geeky numbers and all making it way better to be a jazz fan each and every day thank you for making locked on Jazz your first listen of the day we are free available on all podcasting apps and on YouTube if you

Like the way Colin saxon’s been playing this year throw a thumbs up on YouTube right now and the everydays you are the best and if you’re coming to the game tonight I look forward to seeing you and I will try to make sure I grab stickers

So if anybody wants to stop by they can either get one from me or Sherry um and do that so uh thank you very much for tuning in to Today’s Show uh I always appreciate you guys that listen every day and it’s it’s awesome all

Right so last year the story of our year and we were static because we found low marinin and I think that this year we have found another piece and then what that piece is and how what position he plays and how he’s defined is interesting because he Colin defies some

Logic in his body and his size and some things like that listed at 63 he’s probably 61 but this kid has had a massive massive growth in the last year with the Utah Jazz and is a legitimate valuable NBA player who can help you win basketball games uh and you

Know I think probably the number one thing we underestimated in the process of when the team was really playing well and and the impact was Colin Collins’s moov into the starting lineup so let’s look at two things one since Collins’s got in the starting lineup let’s just make sure we

Have it it’s crazy 21 points a game over the last 39 games in 28 minutes will has been very diligent about keeping his minutes at kind of this set kind of level almost as though he’s your Sixth Man which might be what he turns out to

Be um over time and he’s playing 28 minutes a night he’s averaging two rebounds five and a half assists he’s shooting 50% from the field and 44% from three I will give you some data in a minute on the amount of players in the NBA who have shot 50%

From the field in a season 40% from three taken four threes and scored 20 points a game and you’ll be floored but let’s moreover look at what Colin’s done when Colin was in Cleveland he got labeled at 19 and 20 as a ball hog scorer only on a

Bad team his assist rate was in the fourth percentile the first year in the sixth percentile the second year as a point guard then he kind of moved to a combo guard so this is based on percentages but he jumped up this year he’s in the of combo guards he’s in the

88 percentile of assist percentage that’s from a guy who was a pure point guard was a fourth and sixth percentile even if you just look at it he was in the he had 15% assist rate his first two years in League he’s at a 28% assist

Rate this year so he’s assisting on 28% of the field goals when he’s on the field and he was assisting at 15% that’s just a massive awesome developmental Jump by Colin seon that’s the game has slowed down he’s matured the coaching’s been great on him and honestly I’ve said this about about

Colin before I when the year started if you’d asked me I’d never been around a player who I thought had a greater desire to do the right thing with less chance of it happening I his desire was there I did not think he had the chance

To evolve his skill set I just didn’t see his ability to slow down I knew he wanted to do well it’s awesome his assist rate is overall for the season in all minutes is in 29 29% it was at 15 his first two years it was at 18% last

Year with the jetz his turnover rate is down his usage rate is actually just right where it’s always been he’s at a 27.5% usage rate which is what he was his last year in Cleveland it’s what he was his second year in Cleveland he was higher in his third year in Cleveland

Before the it before he got injured in his fourth year so he’s evolved in that way where why has he become so efficient his Rim finishing is at 74% that might be a tiny bit of an outlier maybe he at other in his career he’s been at 63% so that’s worth digging into

Finding out what is it that he’s done his rate of Rim finishing is down a tiny bit so he might have been more judicious with it he also just might be making better decisions that’s where the assists and some of those things that now when he’s in trouble he’s not forcing up crazy

Shots he’s getting rid of the ball and getting to someone assist what’s maybe most exciting to me is that his floater Zone his mid-range twos none of them are actually particularly good and you ask me why is that exciting because there’s not an outlier here the 74% at the Rim’s

A little bit of an outlier but he’s now taking a little bit more floaters some mid-range jump shots and he shoots at 40 41% 42% that’s League average and then his three-point shooting he is just evolved into a three-point shooter this is just work this is a guy who never

Stops working and now for 36 minutes Colin used to take three or four three-point shots a game he’s now taking six per 48 minutes for 100 possessions he’s up to seven or eight which is where you have to be as a guard for a game he’s now taking four three-point shots a

Game and he’s shooting 40% his career number is 38 it’s not like this is an Outlanders thing he’s just finding a way to get four of them off a game and and his position will play is probably the story he’s playing off the ball more he’s now playing about 69%

According to basketball reference as a shooting guard and 15% as a point guard and Will’s now integrating some more point guard play into him than he’s had before and he’s just been flat out brilliant he is a Bonafide energy bug he is a allhe heart great kid he’s doing

The right thing all the time will says like the kids never been in my office and complained about a thing and so you add in that this is a Bonafide Elite offensive player and let me get to how in an NBA season Now understand Collins only done this for 39 games as a

Starter but in an NBA season players who have shot over 50% for the season over 40% from three and taken four threes again game and scored 20 points a game okay four qualifiers Collins let’s make sure we’re being totally transparent here colins’s at 50.3% shooting so he’s dancing on that

Line he’s at 44% three-point shooting he’s scoring 21 points a game and he also is taking 4.53 he also got five and a half assists which I could have put in as another qualifier but and again colins done this for 39 games not 80 here are the players most recently who have done

Something of this sort kawh Leonard is doing it this year in 55 games Kevin Durant is doing it this year in 55 games Carl Anthony towns is doing it this year in 60 games LeBron James is doing it this year in 55 games those are the four other players

In the NBA this year that are shooting over 50% over 40% from three taking four threes a game and scoring 20 points a game last year three player two players did it Kawhi Leonard and Kevin Durant the year before one player did it Carl Anthony towns the year before four

Players did it Kyrie Irving Zack LaVine Kevin Durant sheay gilis Alexander the year before that Carl Anthony towns did it the year before that Carl Anthony towns did it the year before that Kevin Durant did it nobody did it in 1617 Steph did it in 1516

Kawhai did it in 1516 Durant did it in 1415 Durant did it in 1213 and Reggie Miller did it in 8990 and Dale list did it in 8889 so players who have accomplished for an entire season what he’s done for 39 games again 39 games are Carl Anthony

Towns Reggie Miller kawii Leonard Zack LaVine Lebron James Kyrie Irving Shay gilis Alexander Dale Ellis Kevin Durant and Steph Curry Dale Ellis and Zack LaVine will not go to the Hall of Fame the rest will Colin seon is the find of this NBA season for the Utah Jazz a Bonafide legit Elite

Offensive player it’s awesome absolutely awesome what’s not awesome is Taylor Hendrick getting hurt we’re going to talk about that we’ll talk about last night which was a pretty good night for the Utah Jazz and I know we’re not supposed to talk about I don’t know if

We’re allowed to I don’t know I I mean no one’s telling me what to or not to it just seems weird to talk about that but last night was a really good night for the Utah Jazz we’ll talk about that as well and then look at the Chicago Bulls

Apps and YouTube thumbs up if you’re fired about with Colin sexon playing give me that all right on YouTube uh lockdown Sports has launched the first ever National 247 Sports channel on YouTube it’s called locked on sports today here’s the deal if you have ESPN or Fox up on your

TV switch make the switch go to lock on sports today throw it up through YouTube or Amazon Fire TV and you’ll get right now you have rener ranks on which is one of our NFL shows ranking the top things they’re talking about the combine previous was locked in NFL draft coming

Up later will be locked in NBA and a bunch of NBA shows it’ll give you the biggest stories of the day they’re going on from the local experts locked on podcast netwk it’s pretty cool it’s not a bunch of people yelling and screaming at you I think you’ll like it so check

It out locked on sports today on YouTube or on Amazon Fire TV uh last night was a good night for the Jazz uh here’s how it played out so again ideally for getting into draft position and ignoring the fact it means you have to lose games we’re trying to get to eight if

You can get to from 9 to eight one you’re secured that you’re not going to lose your pick two you go from 177% chance of being a top four pick to 26% so Toronto is at seven and Toronto is incentivized to lose every game for

The rest of the year because if they get into six then San they get San Antonio’s pick um unless they get bumped in the lottery which is possibility we want to at least get to nine because if you’re at 10 there is a about 25% chance that

Somebody jumps in front of you and then you drop to 11 and lose your pick so we really want to get to eight or nine Brooklyn’s at eight their pick goes to Houston so they’re not incentivized to win nine is Atlanta they are trying to make the play in 10 is

Houston their pick goes to Oklahoma City and we are 11 and Chicago is 12 last night in the NBA here’s what happened Brooklyn who we need to win games beat Philadelphia in a surprise 112 107 20 for Dennis shuder and Dorian finny Smith and they beat the Joel embiid and Tyrese

Maxi list Philadelphia 76ers that’s a nice bonus for us so that’s good now we go to the next one down and the next one down is Atlanta who should be trying to win games and Atlanta went to New York to face the Jaylen Brunson Ochi anobi Julius Randall list Knicks and won 116

To 100 behind 26 points from Jaylen Johnson who’s really become a heck of of a player and DeAndre Hunter off the bench has been really good all right so that’s two for two last night then we go to the Houston Rockets which are the

Next team we need to have win a bunch of games last night and the Houston Rockets beat Victor web and Yama who had seven block shots last night 114 101 as Alfred shenon had 45 points 16 rebounds three assists and five steals last night for the Rockets so all three of those teams

Won last night which is pretty dreamy now wind column we’re still three games ahead of Brooklyn in the wind column which is a lot but hopefully Brooklyn keeps winning Atlanta we are one game in the wind column and Houston we’re one game in the win column so that we’re

Close to getting ourselves to nine and the quest is going to be to get to eight which I think we will um in draft position all right disappointing news yesterday Taylor Hendricks is out with the sprain big toe and going to be out for at least a week so he’ll be or he’ll

Be re-evaluated in a week so that means the experiences that he misses are tonight probably guarding demard de rosan then he misses F sat we do not play on Thursday or Friday we play Saturday in Denver he probably would have had to go up against Aaron Gordon

And all the cutting so that’s and at altitude against the world Champs so that’s too bad and then we come back to play on Tuesday against the Boston Celtics and it sounds like he would miss that game as well trying to guard Jason him so then the soonest we would see him

Again would be our next Friday game against Atlanta um which we’ll see um but that would be 11 days and nine days and hopefully he comes back but the bummer on this is what what will hardy said the other day is that you know you just get into this sequence where you

Know you’re G to play you know you’re coming to the arena and you stop evaluating yourself based on maage shots and those kind of things and you start to evaluate yourself I’m playing the game right because you’re you know hey I’m getting 18 tonight I’m getting 24 tonight I’m getting 30 and Taylor’s

Gotten noticeably better in each and every game he’s played and as will said yesterday frankly you know minutes on the floor are vital to your development you’ve got to earn them Will’s never going to give away free minutes but you’ve got to earn him and the fact that

Taylor was getting 26 29 27 29 minutes a night was giving him the opportunity to just kind of play and understand and learn and get in the comfort zone and not Force the game and you know TR and and learn how he belonged um which I thought was really obvious and so for

Him to now sit out for three or four games is really a bummer and also because frankly we only got 20 of these left or less right like you know the fact is if he goes and misses four games now the rest of the way of our what our

Record is 24 and we have TW we have 20 games left what a bummer love these games keep calling um with 20 games left he’s going to miss five of them let’s say just or four or five of them seems like like a fair guess well that’s right

That’s 30 25% of the remaining opportunities for him to play so that is certainly a a it’s there’s nothing good about it we don’t need like don’t turn it any other way like it’s really disappointing it’s the one thing you don’t want to have happen here down the

Stretch is have these guys get injured and lose opportunities to play minutes because of the fact that this is an opportunity it’s where you know Lowry at some is hurt now and this is a little bit of a bummer on Lowry too like Lowry as of right now and we’ll see when he

Comes back that’s the eye contusion could take a while you know that could be 15% of his opportunity to kind of get a little bit better and develop and in that sense you know we’ve been giving him the ball at the elbow and giving the ball at the nail and making him make

Plays and I think that that’s um I think when you look at that it’s it’s a bummer for him too all right the Chicago Bulls are are focus on the rebuild match today they’re in ninth place right now they they launched a rebuild really after the after they they didn’t make

The playoffs in the 145 season and then they kind of tried to run it out for two more years and in 1718 the 1718 season they started a rebuild so that’s seven years ago and since then they have made a playoff series and lost and don’t look good for the future

Did they blow this and if so why and what can we learn from it next when we continue on locked on Jazz locked on Jazz today in this next episode is brought to you by our friends over at betterhelp betterhelp is online therapy that’s flexible convenient and available to you visit betterhelp.com lockon

NBA I don’t know if better help does it this way but I really think of therapy as performance and enhance it that’s that’s what you’re trying to do is get your performance up whether it’s in relationships or at work or your own personal just mental health and well-being daytoday you’re looking to

Get better and be able to take the muscle that is your brain understand it and become more adapt to using it that’s what you do with betterhelp and betterhelp.com lockon MBA gets you 10% off your first month that’s betterhelp hp.com lockon MBA so if you’re thinking of therapy performance enhancing for the

Brain give better help a try it’s entirely online designed to be flexible and suited to your schedule it’s pretty great in the sense that if you have you get assigned a therapist if it doesn’t work out you can switch which is really the biggest problem you have but by

Doing it not online is trying to find a therapist and then trying to find someone that matches to you so go check it out with betterhelp.com that’s betterhelp.com lockon NBA the Bulls rebuilds pretty fascinating so we’re going to do it in 10 minutes we could probably do two

Hours on this so 1415 they run it out 156 the run and they end up trading this their team was Jimmy Butler Joe Keim Noah Derrick Rose Taj Gibson they had Pal Gasol the time so they get nothing for Joe Keim Noah they get nothing for

Derrick Rose as it suddenly they fir Tom Tibido and they hire Fred hyberg which probably turned out to be a mistake he’s doing a great job in Nebraska but it didn’t work out there and so in 1718 they pivot that’s really their move they trade Jimmy Butler on draft night they

Pick up Zack LaVine Lowry marinin and Chris Dunn so two of our guys and those are really the pieces that they start their rebuild the seventh pick of the draft Chris Dunn who played a year as a former fifth pick and Zack LaVine those are their three pieces that’s their loud

Remark and Colin Saxton and draft picks for Donovan Mitchell that’s that’s their version of that trade and at the time it seemed like a pretty good trade like they got Lowry’s a seventh pick they got Chris dun was a fifth pick and they got Zack LaVine as a rising star they draft

In that draft in the 17 draft because they were pretty good Denzel Valentine who turns out to not to not be very good so in they they then go 27 and 55 and what’s interesting to me about the Bulls and why I think they’re a really really interesting study is

Because they start the rebuild playing the draft so in 1718 they go and they they they they go 27 and 55 and then in that draft they end up with the seventh pick of the draft and they take Wendell Carter Jr the next pick was Colin ston the next

Was Kevin Knox the next was Mel Bridges and then Shay gildess Alexander was the 11th so that you know if they were perfect they would have drafted Shay gilis Alexander otherwise Wendell Carter turned out to be a pretty good player it’s not a terrible draft Luca was three

Jiren Jackson was four that you obviously wish you were there and Shay at 11 is the one that jumps out otherwise that draft falls off the map pretty hard at 12 okay so they draft Wendell Carter Jr and they’re now building between Lowry and Chris Dunn and Zack LaVine and Wendell Carter Jr

And they’re not good they’re 22 and 60 and somehow they end up with the the next year they end up with the seventh pick of the draft again which probably bummer and that draft had Zion Williamson and John Morant and then by the seventh pick of the draft they take

Kobe white and you know what the sixth pick of the draft was Jarrett Culver who never panned out and the next was Jackson Hayes and then ruy hashimura and then cam reddish and then Cameron Johnson and then PJ Washington Kobe white was a pretty fine pick with the

Seventh pick of the draft the draft is hard we’ve learned this over the years this is now a shorten year in 19 because of covid they don’t make the bubble and they go 20 two and 43 and now they get to draft with the fourth pick of the

Draft and they draft they think they should be ready they they go back to the draft and this is the Anthony Edwards James wisman lamelo Paul and they get the fourth pick and they take Patrick Williams and that has not turned out great Patrick Williams has never materialized into anything yet and the

Fact is though the next pick was Isaac auro the next pick was Ono ungu then kill Hayes then Obi Topham and then Danny Avida and then Jaylen Smith so nobody in that top 10 paid out again a team that played the draft and didn’t blow it but got nothing so then the

Bulls are sitting here the end of the 1920 NBA season and they’ve played the draft kind of as they’re supposed to and they’ve gotten almost nothing out of it they’re 22 and 43 that last year they come out of Co we’re going to play a shorten season they hire Billy Donovan their

Head coach and they look at their roster which at that point is Zack LaVine Kobe white Patrick Williams Lowry marinin and Wendell Carter Jr and they’re all young and they pivot they dead pivot 32 games into the season they make a trade which is terrible terrible trade and that’s the

Problem here the pivots not the problem the trade was the problem so they they pivot out of the draft this is not a model that I don’t I think this model could be pretty similar to the Utah Jazz you play the draft for a few years and then it’s just too long

A road to play only the draft that’s why we have all these assets and all these picks so the model by which they followed I actually think is really interesting and then I actually don’t think their end their end result is unfair to what the work their front

Office did I’ll get to that in a second but they make a trade and they trade for Nicola vuvi who’s been an Allstar pseudo Allstar inefficient not an analytics darling not a 610 260 a bad pick and roll Defender not a player I would have traded for

Okay that’s I guess where I’m saying and not only they trade for him they trade Wendell Carter Jr they trade the 2021 first round pick that becomes France Vagner and they trade the 2023 pick that becomes jet Howard we’ll see how that plans out for Nic for Nicol

Vuich fron Vagner is great the irony is fron Vagner is better than any player they drafted previously and this is where like giving up a top 10 draft pick is torturous because they did it thought that they wouldn’t be drafting top 10 because they thought they’d be better

And it ends up to bite them but let’s back up a step so that was the middle of the season in 2021 they make that trade they are now pivoting off the draft they have now got a Direction and their direction is we’re not building through

The draft we have young pieces but we’re not building through the draft and in the 2021 the 2021 2022 off season they make two massive moves they use their cap space and they sign Lonzo ball and they sign Demar to Rosen again the question is why those

Two right that to me would really be the question and then they trade Lowry Markin for a second round pick and some pieces to Cleveland because they don’t want to resign Lowry because they’ve tarnished that relationship okay that is just bad Asset Management you can’t afford so there are

Aspects in here where you can do this same pivot way better hopefully trade for better players and not have L an all future All-Star like Lowry Markin and just a walk keep Lowry Markin with nicoa vuich and maybe you have something and then you add demard DE Rosen and you add

Lonzo ball and maybe you have something so in the 2122 season the Chicago Bulls have now fully pivoted their opening night roster against the Detroit Pistons that year is Lonzo ball Zack LaVine Nicole vuich demard de R rozan and Patrick Williams they’re youngster their bench is Alex Caruso and a bunch of no

Names and they’re not bad they start that year and they get hot and they’re 26 and 10 they’re 20 39 and 21 it’s working they’ve pivoted they’re good they’re looking at times there’s articles being written about them of whether or not they’re a title Contender like how good

Are the Chicago Bulls are the Bulls back and it on the 35th game of the year or thereabouts Lonzo ball gets hurt Lonzo ball battles through a knee knee injury but in the 2122 season on about the 29th game of the year he gets hurt he misses five games

He comes back he plays six more games and the last game Lonzo ball has ever played for the Chicago Bulls was January 14th of 2022 and on that year with Lonzo ball playing they 22 and 13 they pivoted they didn’t do it perfectly they made a bad

Trade with Nicola vuvi they let a future Allstar and Lowry Markin and go they didn’t do it great but but they were going to be pretty good and 35 games in signing with the Chicago Bulls Lonzo ball is out and it’s never played again and frankly they’ve just never

Recovered they signed him to a multi-year deal on a sign in trade they didn’t really give up anything they’re paying him 20 million a year and they’re getting nothing and then there is a legitimate question of whether Demar de rozan is the right guy with his mid-range game to build around

In the modern NBA and the end result is since being 39 and 21 and rolling or 26 and 10 that year and rolling when they were 26 and10 they finished that year 20 and 26 in the 2122 season they then went 40 and 42 the next

Year and then they’ve gone 29 and 32 this year so they are since Lonzo Ball’s been out they are 11 games below 500 and a slightly below 500 team on a roster they built probably because nicolea vuvi is just not quite efficient enough and because Zack LaVine turned out to be

What Zack LaVine is and demard de rosen’s been solid they have a lot of talent but they’re missing that point guard Kobe white has emerged this year to be a really nice player very similar to Colin sexon and that draft pick of Kobe white in the 19 draft is

Probably the right absolutely the right pick and then to the point of of Player Development Kobe white at 19 years old came in the league and has hit his stride in his fifth year in the NBA and we open the show today talking about Colin seon who came into the NBA after

One year of the NBA of college basketball came in at 20 years old and has really hit his stride in his sixth year in the NBA and that’s why you pivot off the draft is because when you’re taking 19 and 20 year old kids they’re going to

Hit their stride in their fifth or sixth season of the NBA unless they’re Lebron James or Kevin Durant and then you pivot off the draft because it takes too long to do it only through the draft and that’s why we have a bunch of assets and that’s while yes there are mistakes

There and you can ridicule the Chicago bu the plan was not awful and the plan is probably one that should be the model for lots of teams so interesting to see all right that is our analysis the Bulls want your thoughts throw them in the

Chat room send them to me on X at D9 or email me at delock 09@gmail.com I think it’s an interesting conversation I love doing those things I hope you enjoy them too we’ll do them more and more in the offseason as we get ready have fun tonight Jazz blls will be on SiriusXM

Lauri Markkanen was the find for the Utah Jazz last season. This year the discovery is Collin Sexton. Sexton’s growth and offensive prowess is truly remarkable. He is averaging over 20 points a game while shooting over 50% from the field, 40% from three and taking 4 threes a game since moving into the starting lineup. The amount of players who have done that for entire season are few and far between.

Last night was a good night for the Utah Jazz if you are standing watcher. Taylor Hendricks is out for at least a week and their is nothing good about that news.

David Locke, radio voice of the Utah Jazz and Jazz NBA insider, takes a look at the Chicago Bulls failed re-build and wonders if it isn’t such a failure. After playing the draft for a few years they pivotted and built around free agents and major trade pieces. Was it the wrong plan or were they just unfortunates with the Lonzo Ball injury?
