ESPN reacts to Paolo Banchero scores 22 points as Magic beat Hornets 101- 89 for 9th win in 11 games
Welcome in Hornets live the postgame show the Hornets back home for just one game they took on Orlando and the magic too much to handle they are now six and one after the All-Star break they get the win one of 189 that final score we welcome you in Ashley Shamy back with
Terence oakal be 36 total turnovers Terence 19 of them from the Hornets for 23 Orlando points it was kind of a sloppy Affair back and forth on both sides but then in the end magic just pulled through this was an NBA game that’s equivalent to a root canal oh
That’s how that was today uh so many turnovers so many fouls it was ugly the whole way through and to be honest with you when the game gets that ugly yeah the Orlando Magic have enough big bodies to really take advantage of an ugly game and they certainly did that today and
It’s not just a starting unit it’s not just banero four guys off the bench today in double figures they had their back court in foul trouble early in this one both of those guys uh with three and four fouls really in that first half so
They had the bench step up in a big way they’re tonight’s for keys of the game there’s with four guys in double figures yeah Jonathan Isaac I thought was so impressive finally healthy can get out can guard so many spots on the floor and Anthony black kudos to that kid he comes
Out of Arkansas has completely switched his shot it used to come from the dead center of his forehead he’s moved it over to the right side of his body to try to keep his elbow in and it’s starting to pay dividends uh early now he’s got to shoot free throws better but
All that being said he’s pretty uh pretty talented guy but uh Vagner I mean just endless o activity uh Cole Anthony able to do some different things today uh this is what he’s done his entire life he’s a lights out score and he can do it in bunches and he’s a perfect Off
The Bench lightning rod for this magic team he had some impressive shots that is for sure in this team they are trying to avoid the play in spot they’re really trying to make a push for that top six in the postseason that one that one hurt
Yeah it hurt and vogner’s such a good energy player for this team can he step out and knock down shot sure but his biggest attribute for this team is being able to go in there and get under the skin of the opponent him being 6′ 11 610
611 and still be that guy uh him and Grant Williams have a lot of similarities Grant’s kind of that guy for this Hornet Squad but for the magic you have somebody at 610 611 that’s capable of that and stepping out and hitting the three uh I thought he was
Impressive tonight both Vagner Brothers I thought played well uh just so much size so much physicality and when the game’s ugly it’s going to play in favor of the bigger stronger team these two teams definitely got under each other’s skin really chippy there were three technical fouls all in the third quarter
Lots of fouls in general but like you said they have a lot of physical big tough guys and even when things get sloppy they able to pull through one Brandon Miller with 18 points he’s talking to the media let’s take a listen neither one uh I think we just
Start off the game with you know not the most energy um I think just moving forward just next game just come out with the most energy that you know that we need possibility to know uh to win games like this in front of our home crowd um and of course protect the home
Court this game got a little physical little chippy maybe there in the third quarter was there anything about uh not being able to respond to their physicality that was kind of manifesting on the glass with the turnovers did it feel like that at all uh no like I said just
Energy wise um I think we just pick it up on pick our pick up our energy um you know just throughout the whole game I think it’s I think just having the the mindset of going 110% every play um being in the right spot I think we’ll come out with a
Win Brandon a starter with France guarding you they kind of switched to jonan Isaac when France was on the bench Can you just talk about those two Defenders and even though you still able to have a good night but the different looks you seeing all night yeah Orlando
Is a great team uh it’s not just one player that guards me um it’s I think it’s a whole team um you know I think that’s the same for you know every every NBA team I think it’s just you know not one player guarding you know the best
Player or you know any top scorer in the league I think it’s just you know buying in um playing for her teammates and you know getting stops like that so I think they did a great job with that Brandon throughout this season thinking back to when you were drafted originally
You know top picking the draft coming into this team now then going through the trade deadline bringing in a lot of younger guys how’s your role kind of you know evolved from from coming as a new guy to quickly becoming you know somebody who people might kind of look
Toward oh yeah I think it’s just like I said being a young leader um I think being a young leader now I think it’s going to help us um in the long run Brandon if there’s a night where your mid-range shot isn’t particularly Fallen well do you think that’s you know
A night where you try to get to the rim a little bit to get yourself going offensively no got one more congratulations on winning February or March February rookie of the month yeah exactly February rookie of the month I know you don’t really you know care about it
Because it’s off a loss but can you just talk about the evolution you’ve seen in your game in 2024 yeah I think I think uh my biggest um you know thing that I that I’ve been working on is just you know gaining weight um putting on muscle mass I think
You know strength coaches been doing a great job with that every day um so I think just that’s that’s the big thing me just building strength uh being able to take bumps and finish through contact coach said crazy to think this is only year one for Brandon Miller and I love what
Dell said during the broadcast he said You know despite the record for the Hornets Brandon Miller does a really good job of not you know adapting bad habits um in losing situations and just continuing to be competitive and wanting to win and playing to win a ball game
Well yeah I think that’s huge and the big thing is is you drafted a winner with Brandon Miller that’s that’s the biggest thing you take away it’s an everyday thing and while he does make his share of mistakes it’s rare that he makes him two and three times in a row
Which is something that’s not all that common whenever you bring in rookies into a situation like this he he’s a winner he continues to play well and it’s going to manifest itself as time goes on and this is a game where today it was a bit of a struggle for him
Because of that weight that he was talking about at the end of the press conference he said no they didn’t bully us they did a little bit just a little bit I mean they’re big big they’re strong they’re physical and because they switch everything you’re going to have
To make individual plays eventually once he puts on that weight Brandon’s going to be able to make those plays and it’s going to be a different ball game in two years than it is now uh and it all has to do with that weight and his continuous improvement from one end of
The spectrum to the next we have Brandon Miller as a rookie but we also have vilia Mech 30-year-old rookie he kind of had a hard time maybe getting into Rhythm the first few games as a hornet but tonight he was able to do that 21
Points for him in 28 minutes well he he found the guy that he wanted to attack off ball screen and that’s how he was able to find Space they were not switching on him the entire time he picked his matchups and he was able to attack Ashley whenever he got a pner
Brother on him he put his head down and got all the way to the cup and he did so in a fairly efficient manner eight of 15 from the field against a really long really athletic Miami or Orlando Magic Bunch it’s listed Vasa me 65205 and Brandon Miller 68 205 he’s
Tonight’s Toyota Let’s Go Places both rookies uh about a decade apart but man it’s been fun to watch both of them it certainly has for different reasons of course for different reasons all right we still got to here 189 the final score let’s hear from head coach Steve
Clifford give his thoughts after this one well I mean really for both teams I mean that was not a what you’d say an aesthetically pleasing NBA game to watch right I mean it was 37 turnovers it was pretty sloppy on both ends um you know I mean you know that was
Eight and 13 nights for us and we look like it that’s the first time with this group actually all year we haven’t had many games where we didn’t play with the right amount of energy but obviously we didn’t tonight is that more of just physically not having their energy I
Think so yeah I mean like look we are we’re in a stretch here we go 14 out of 18 on the road in out in out um and we haven’t had two days off for a while tomorrow will be the first time and we’ve also had two sets of
Backto backs in like the last week and a half so um I mean it definitely played a part and I thought to start the second half we tried to get our energy going but you know we just couldn’t get there coach you were shorthanded a little bit
This game can you talk about meit and beron you know having double both of them yeah played really good uh I thought Trey played well um you know it’s it’s hard to you know when you have that many turnovers you know it’s hard to to
Um to put a good game together you know for 48 minutes I mean they scored 23 points off our 18 turnovers and I think even like our defensive numbers will be pretty good because even though they shot 504 it’s misleading because they scored so much off our turnovers our
Half court defense wasn’t bad you said after the second Milwaukee game last week you weren’t happy with your shot selection as a team few games go by here we are third since then has that gotten better including well I’ll be honest and the the other Factor now is that was
With Cody and Seth so I mean now we’re you know we have a lot less offensive kind of shot creation shot making in the group so I mean it’s look there’s going to be some nights here that if we’re not really really on it you know we’re not going to score a ton
Of points i s we got to be little turnover we got to be smart uh we got to be super purposeful and our defense is going to have to continue to be good after the deadline you got a lot of new additions still not a lot of size I
Know it’s not necessarily a new thing post deadline but they had a bunch of dunks especially in the second half I mean we look you know we’re tiny yeah I mean by NBA standard and it’s not just at the four and the five I mean we’re tiny everywhere but we also have
Strengths that way you know so like um like for instance playing gr at the five actually that’s our best offensive and defensive group group you know because he gives us so much more versatility um and and again in the big picture um you know so much is just is
Evaluation you know but to truly evaluate what our guys are doing we have to play to win which you know we did we just we lack the energy tonight but I I you know like those things you’re talking about it’s it’s just where we’re
At you know I mean um we’re going to be smaller here for the rest of the year and and um so you know we’re going to have nights like we did against uh Philadelphia right where you know like the biggest difference in the game was offensive rebounding points for them
You know but you know it will give us a good chance to evaluate a lot of guys and see where we’re at going into the summer though it’s definitely a tough Video For foree oh Fore speech speech speee fore fore spee I saide fore Foree for Fore speech speee speech spe foreign Foreign Spee Speee spe speech foreign foreign For for
