NBA Gametime reacts to Toronto Raptors beat Pacers 130-122; RJ Barrett 24 Pts; B. Mathurin 34 Pts

It’s the first three- game win streak of the season for the Toronto Raptors and that man get it all Scotty Barnes 21 points 12 rebounds 12 assists five blocks for the triple double welcome to Center Corner welcome back with us we have a double header tonight Miami Heat

Sacramento Kings coming up in a little bit here Chris Miles here with Candace Parker and Jamal Crawford and let’s just start with Scotty Barnes I mean you know this is a team that moved on from Pascal seak a guy they won a championship with who had been an All-Star playing for the

Other team tonight and it’s like oh this is the reason we’re going with Scotty Barnes as our franchise player well there’s no accident why he was an All-Star this year um I love the fact that he’s get in love for his versatility in his game he not gudy in

Terms of points but gudy in terms of stat line you look at that across the board I mean he had his imprint and his handprint on every part of the game from the defensive end to facilitating from starting the offense from pickup points um just across the line just an overall

Amazing showing tonight absolutely and then the don’t forget playing against a guy like seak who he played against and he was the guy now you’re not there to replace him but you’re there to kind of move this along so that’s added fuel there but it’s always nice when a guy

Works on his game and then he gets the opportunity to show it you don’t know trades or or free agency signs are going to happen but he’s prepared he’s he has him playing well and he had a great game tonight well we’ve talked about the Pacers defense and if they’re going to

Be a team that can play in the postseason they got to figure that out Toronto exploited that to the tune of 78 points in the paint a slew of assist it’s really how they attack Candace and I think the biggest thing when you’re playing uh a defensive team like the

Pacers and I say that in they’re not extremely strong on the defensive end the key is ball movement you see two you get rid of it you try to get into the teeth of the defense with pocket pass away action discipline right here on the screen OG’s able to reject the screen

Right here you got bigs that can make passes and that can see the floor you put RJ Barrett at the elbow a little simple in screen I don’t know if it was necessarily anything great Toronto was doing they were just making reads and making cuts and being unselfish and when

You’re playing on the defensive ve the worst thing to play is a team that’s unselfish sees two and makes the right play and they continually make the right play if you look at Toronto they had seven guys in double figures nine guys played the other two that didn’t had six

Assists and no Len and brown so they went from good to great all night they simplified the game they trust each other and Scotty Barnes having the triple double but other guys stepped up as well and he allowed them to play you know that last shot uh Grady dick was

Four for four from three-point range a rookie that kind of struggled out of the gate and if you look at what he’s done the past month or so Jamal what’s it like being a rookie coming into league and then having you know a couple of months you’re like uh not going well

Seeing what’s happening for him it’s tough because everything’s fluid it can change so fast you can have a totally different team it takes a while some guys get it early to get your NBA confidence and and that’s when your coaches you know trust and you can feel

Their trust and you can feel like okay I can miss this shot and still stay out here I can miss a couple or I can do this to stay on the court and and right now looks like he’s getting his NBA confidence and he’s providing a weapon and he’s providing something that his

Teammates and his coaching staff can depend on every single night and that’s how you get minutes yeah we can’t hear from you on this cuz you wanton MVP and rookie talk to her about no role player type stuff we can’t talk to about that do that what we

Can’t like that is I look at benine right and you did you just do the goat sound with her first time ever only can no never never again never again that was a lot let’s go to Benedict Maan because before the game you were like I

Loved his energy at allar he had 34 points uh tied his season high with five three-pointers he missed just four shots all game and really in the third quarter when Indiana was making a push he was providing the offense and I think there is a seriousness about his game that

Even at Allstar all of us saw that I mean anytime you’re talking junk and talking mess during an All-Star Game you know it’s a big deal it shows how serious you are and you know I think that there are steps that guys take in their sophomore year especially after

Allstar that Pro that they’re ready for more and to me looking at the Poise that he played with tonight he didn’t force shots he got 34 on 15 shots and there were a number of possessions down the stretch that all of us were like shoot

It and he made the right play and so I think that just shows a sign of maturity and shows that he’s able to to make an impact on this team and may be ready for a bigger role a guy like him you could tell he was a pro before he got to the

Pros he has a certain demeanor a certain discipline a certain mentality it like I’m not taking anything for granted there’s a certain to your point a certain maturity that every time he steps on the court he’s going to try to have you remember that he was out there

And he’s doing that right now uh we look at Tyrese halber an amazing player in this league off night nine points seven assists two for 11 from the field one for six from three-point range and that kind of fits the theme of the Pacers on the second night of back Tob backs

Candace you pointed that out before this game even started they’re now 2 and nine the second night back back to season yeah and I think to be honest Tyrese is going to look even better when the Pacers defensively are better because when you’re getting stops you’re in free

Flow and you’re in secondary and he’s able to Showcase his reads and his playmaking when the Pacers are playing against a set defense they still were able to score 122 points but I don’t know if there’s as many opportunities and possessions as they would have liked

And so I think when you’re playing with a guy like Tyrese halberton I think the biggest thing is he’s so unselfish that he doesn’t ever want to not be efficient right so two for 11 I want to see Tyrese go four for 17 for 18 you know what I

Mean I think that you have to have that mentality of like getting over the hump and still taking the same shots that you would whether you’re having an off night or on night for sure yo yeah know who had an on night tonight Scotty Barnes

Again uh 21 points uh 12 and 12 and rebounds and assist uh thanks for joining us now Scotty when I look at what you were able to accomplish I think the thing that stands out the most uh the five blocks including the fact that you were blocking three-point shots can

You take us through uh your approach when you see a guy ready to pull up for three and you know that you’re in position to get that block because that’s like a very incredible thing uh as far as timing and and being able to execute uh I’m just trying to help the

Paint uh protect my teammates help my team out on the Florida on any drives and then I think uh when they pass it out I’m able to I got long arm so I’m able to get there uh jump high and just go block the shot uh so it’s just about

Helping my teammates and then getting out trying to contest shots that’s what we emphasize over here Scotty I’m sorry to interrupt Candace Parker here um congrats again on Allstar it was fun watching you um watching you play but again I think the thing that jumps out

To me is your assist I mean 12 assists tonight and you constantly are not just getting assists you’re manipulating the defense to get your teammates open what goes into that and how much do you love being in this Raptor offense where you’re in the center of the court and

Distributing and making those around you better uh I think it’s about my teammates trusting me and the coaches just keep constantly drawing up plays for me uh being able to be in those positions and then just making reads out of it uh there’s a lot of ongoing

Actions that keep happening and we just be able to play out of it and you know I’m with my vision I’m able to just find those guys uh rather they’re cutting uh moving off the ball uh coming off down screens and when I drive you know the

Defense has to collapse so just being able to find those guys while they’re moving and collapse why the defense collaps and just kicking the ball out Scotty what’s up it’s Jamal Crawford uh my question what’s up my guy my question for you is I always said you play like a

Young Kawaii Leonard who did you watch growing up because you could do so many different things on the court and most people try to mimic their favorite players who are you watching oh um Me growing up I really watch I don’t I don’t really know I just watch like

Videos of Kobe I watch videos of like LeBron um I hav really watched so much basketball but uh it was just about playing the right way uh me I just love basketball I just will always go to the gym uh and just like playing basketball play the right way um I like passing

That was just my natural instinct so just being able to be in those positions to pass the ball uh and just playing the right way you know it just comes a long way not woring about everything else uh the game just come real natural to me very natural to you and it’s interesting

Watching you play against Pascal SE yakum tonight right what’s that like for you after you know coming into this league winning rookie of the year uh being on the same team as Pascal and now playing against him when he’s with the Pacers um you know it was fun uh he’s a

Competitor he loves the game he he works really hard on his game and every time we step on the floor we know we’re both going to try to win for our teams right now uh so you know he’s going to try to win and he playing as hard as he can out

There while I’m trying to win and play as hard as I can out there uh we love competition we’re both competitors and we just want to win uh you know it’s first time I see him in different Jersey it was kind of weird but you know things

Happen and you just got to move on and just compete well Scotty Barnes I mean you say you love to pass you’ve been a joy to watch especially with your triple double tonight near five blocks uh thank you for joining us we appreciate your time my friend congrats on being an

Allstar and also for winning Rook of the year two years ago thank you and a historic night for Scotty Barnes first player in Raptor history with a triple double and a five blocks in a game and Candace you’re shaking your head because they were amazing those blocks a couple of them coming on

  1. siakum got caught up in the me vs raptors instead of pacers vs raptors… and since ben had great night he deferred more to him…however he was selfish compared to first half
