Postgame Interview | Kevin Ollie and Cam Thomas after Brooklyn Nets 110-99 loss to Charlotte Hornets
Nets postgame show on yes I’m Nancy Newman the Nets came into tonight hoping to wash away the bad taste left by that road trip opening lost to Detroit cam Thomas got them off to the quick start in his return from injury but the here’s a look at the Honda game sumary Nets fall
11099 they had two good quarters scoring more than 30 points in the first and third but then Charlotte held them to just 17 points in the second and fourth Camp Thomas finishes with 31 points miles brid post a double double Charlotte snaps that four game home skid against the Nets and Brooklyn remains
Winless when held under 110 points let’s hear what Kevin Ole had to say Kevin with the way you guys came out in that first quarter just kind of locked in and focused and what ways did that Focus Shift and change throughout the game um I mean we we we got it going
Offensively um and then when shots start not going in um we didn’t get back in transition um and they just got their confidence and transition um I think they had 26 points in transition we kind of halted it in the second half but it’s too late then
Um we just have to have resolve when shots are going in we we’re fine but when shots not going in we got to do the little things and I tell them it’s not that we’re not capable are we willing to do it though um to do the small things
To win and we going to get on this plane and I’m going to stop I’m not going to stop fighting I’m not going to stop motivating them encouraging them to do the small things and we’re not going to stop fighting we need to win a game against Cleveland that nobody think we
Can win in the second quarter it felt like that’s where the confidence kind of was felt especially with that Hornets group just what did you see and kind of what adjustments if there were any adjustments that you saw from the Hornets team they just they they they pressured
Us they got up they got made it hard for us they Blitz um and we turned the ball over um so they Blitz and pick and roll uh we went over the blitz pick and roll where we want to hit the dive man and do our cutting patterns behind it and you
Know we have to do it better we have to execute better um and we got to make sure we make the right plays and uh we didn’t do enough of that tonight um and it’s all it it is offense but it’s really they they get into our
Rim um and when Nick goes over to block the shot we got a v down and everybody got to do it together it’s just a combination of a lot of things um haven’t watched the tape but my eyes don’t lie um 50/50 balls um I don’t
Remember us was getting one of them um I really don’t and I might be lying when I watch the tape but every 50-50 ball when we had a chance to get it we didn’t get it and that’s one of the biggest egbs this is a I mean this is a second
Game in a row where kind of staying in front of your man was a problem and allowing the kind of those line drives to the rim um in your mind was that is that an effort thing or is that not kind of focusing in on the game plan and
Helping guys out I mean from training camp on I mean the game plan is contain a dribble I mean you can’t give up straight line drives there’s no defense in the world for that we can do shell all we want to but straight line drives and dependent on Nick to block the shot
He’s not Superman back there so and sometimes we in 15 and he’s up on the perimeter so um we have to do a better job keeping our man in front of us um and then when the ball goes up on the rim we have to do a better job being
Down and boxing out but when you get blown by we have to help that just causes a domino effect where it’s open threes it’s open offensive rebounds so we just have to do a better job in that and we’ll continue to try to drive them
To to focus in and have pride on that on that area with the paint defense I think three the last four games you have to given up Play 50 points do you see in addition what BR just asked do you see any commonalities besides just not seeing Forman just guys not collapsing
At the Ram or just you said too much pressure on the neck like what do you see with not being able to protect the paint as well as you want to it starts with ball pressure starts with containing and dribble I mean that’s where it starts at and if you can’t do
That it’s very hard we want to be shifted behind uh we want to have assertive gaps um and when you get drove D you know driven you want to have assertive gaps make them kick it out and then we have a stunt behind and it’s just making multiple effort plays and we
Have to do that um to win games and we got to do it consistently it can’t be just the first quarter we have to do it consistently and we have to get stops multiple stops I thought we did a good job third quarter coming out we couldn’t
Score on the other end but we was getting stops and then it just you know got away from us in that fourth as far as cam Thomas goes obviously he came out firing as if he had missed the beat yet I guess what did you see change after that first half it
Seemed like after that over for three and the second did he start first of all how did he starting and second do you see him like petering out a little bit as just getting his win back or what do you see no I you know they put a lot of
Focus on him um you know they was blissing every pick and roll they was sending the guy at him so thought he did a really good job coming back and you know having 31 points having an impact on the game um and hopefully he be ready to respond tomorrow well with the ankle
For tomorrow’s game so thought he did a good job um of course he was probably winded a little bit and um haven’t played in a while but um he did a hell of a job coming back from an injury and having 31 points in the flow wasn’t like
It was something out of script it was in the flow so um we like that and hopefully he continues to do that as our other guys step up as well thanks car for you in that first quarter how and what ways did you see this game just change and go a different
Direction yeah um we got out early on them 286 I think and you know 12o Le early you can’t we can’t let up um they just started making their runs started making their threes you know get into the bucket so and that’s where it turned
We gave him life after we jumped out on him so that’s all it is for you you played um in the first 18 minutes you already had 17 points how are you feeling and just how good was it did you just be back out there on the court how
Did you find the Rhythm that you did have it was good um you know wish I played more but you know it was a minut restriction so you know when you rolling like that you want to keep going until you know you you run
Out but you know it is what it is just try to do the best I could in the minutes I was given tonight so you know just got to keep it up for Cleveland tomorrow yeah this is obviously you weren’t blaming the last game but I mean
This is the second game in a row where keeping guys in front of you guys was a problem kind of getting these straight line drives to the rim um either from what you saw tonight while you’re out there playing or even what you were watching last game when you were on the
Bench what what have you noted in a commonality in that that’s causing guys to be able to get those kind of line drives to the run just effort man that’s all it is to we try to keep somebody in front um some of it game fars when they
Come and peel we don’t really you know we mess up the cover sometime as a whole but at some point you just got to take the challenge and guard your man 101 if you make it over you make it over you so just force the tough shot you can but
You know just giving a straight line drives as hard puts a lot of pressure on our defense because then they can just spray it out get wide open threes catch and shoot threes and you know any Min this leag can make a wide open and catch
A shoot three so at point in time we just got to take pride and just keeping somebody in front of us for sure with this road trip obviously he’s not going enough to a great start how do you guys now try to regroup not just for Cleveland but knowing again all these
Games are extra important now with that playing tournament still inside for sure um just not looking ahead taking one game at a time um you know Cleveland tomorrow get get a little break day off and then you know we play another good team Orlando so we can’t really be looking ahead looking at
What Atlanta’s doing we got to take care of our business win these games you know and hopefully things turn around and you know helping our favor but you know we just got to stick to it and just keep playing did these first two games feel a
Little bit um more I guess P me might be the word but more heavy just because obviously those were two games you guys kind of wanted to win given who you were facing a little bit yeah without doubt especially how the game started um against Detroit um we got down early had
A fight back you know that’s tough and even this game we got up this game and then you know they came back they made their run and you know we just couldn’t put them away after that so feel like if we get a jump on teams early and just
