Open of the show ignore seeding for a minute because fourth seed fifth seed and look I still think there’s a very good chance the pelons can get the fourth seed and it’ll likely be one of these two teams slipping while the other one goes to third I don’t think It

Ultimately matters here right now for the discussions of this because if the Pelin are four they’re playing the fifth seed if the Pelicans are five they’re playing the fourth seed so their likely first round opponent if they stay in the position that they’re in and it’s not a

Guarantee we’ll look at the schedule we’ll talk about where they they could slip up a little bit likely it’s going to be one of the Clippers or the min AA Timberwolves in the first round and at first I thought this would easy be easy

But then as I dove into both teams one I feel good about either matchup or at least feel okay about either matchup and let’s start with that like why you feel okay with either matchup here when I look at the postseason 4 New Orleans we know the parts that are good we know

That Brandon Ingram can do this we pretty much believe Zion should be able to do this right this team is good top 10 in both offense and defense right right now their depth is in Advantage for them gets a little bit lighter in the postseason but at least you you feel

Good about the guys that you’re going to play the worry for the Pelicans is not their starting lineup as much anymore minor concern there but that’s stabilized a little bit it’s really to me the center position in the playoffs and when you look at the Clippers and the Timberwolves I don’t think either

Presents like a huge problem in terms of the center spot is Jonas valunas unplayable in either of these series I don’t think so you know on on paper you’d probably rather avoid the Clippers you know Russell Westbrook and we’ll get more into them in a second here Russell Westbrook or even limited Russell

Westbrook he’s out with a broken hand head surgery they hope he can be ready for the start of the postseason but that’s an 11 points per game guy right you know Minnesota seems the better matchup because we don’t know if Carl Anthony towns is going to be playing

They gave an update on his injury the Timberwolves did today when I’m recording this on Tuesday before they play the Clippers that game’s massive by the way for the Pelicans actually you know they said in four weeks he’ll be re-evaluated okay we’ll see it’s a miniscus tear that’s you know going to

Be kind of a problem so he’s going to be limited even if he is playing in the postseason you know but it seems like you can have yonas valunas and Nance hang out there right for the Clippers it’s it’s Ian zubach and you know I think that is a

Guy that they can be o okay with sorry evach zubach I’m pronouncing his name incorrectly there like it’s it’s a guy that they can play against I think you know he’s not a guy that you’re worried about on the perimeter and that’s the concern with Jonas valent chunis right

Zubach ain’t going to be out there you know making plays on the perimeter taking threes or anything like that it’s just not a concern for New Orleans so you can play yonas valunas more than you could against some of these other mobile centers and the Clippers don’t play

Small a ton and so while laran an Jr has been good but then not great right up and down a little bit this year you don’t need to worry about it as much because Jonas valunas can kind of go out there and hang and play and doesn’t kill you defensively unless they’re throwing

Him in the pick and roll at times but just play Drop coverage at that point where he just kind of hangs back and let them take mid-range shots I think that’s an opportunity for New Orleans to kind of take advantage we’ll get more into the Clippers in a second here right for

The Timberwolves you know if they’re running Rudy Gober out there you know maybe Nas Reed is starting in place depending on what they’re doing with Carl Anthony towns again goar is not a perimeter threat you can run Jonas valunas out there and then when he switches on to Zion Williamson you take

Advantage of that I just don’t see a guy like valent chunis being a big defensive liability in that series again if you play Drop coverage and don’t just switch everything it’ll work work for the most part there’s other centers that would give them trouble like I wouldn’t like

This match up against the Denver Nuggets and Nicola yic I don’t think anyone really would you know I worry about them against a team like the Oklahoma City Thunder as well with Chad homr and kind of the perimeter that play that he has but these two teams not really right you

Know Nas Reed running at the five means you go with Larry NS Jr you can live with it if Nas Reed is the one that’s beating you if nobody else is I think or at least makes it closer to more of a tossup years so when you look at these

Two teams the center position not being a big issue for the Pelicans I don’t know that makes me feel good if they’re the fifth seed that’s fine if they’re the fourth seed okay either one right you know I think you feel good for the most part about that

It comes down to other things right kind of playoff tested versus not not that the Clippers have had tons of playoff success like they would have liked no titles or anything like that but you trust Kawhi Leonard more in the post season you probably trust M maybe maybe

Paul George in the postseason maybe James Harden Mo in the postseason than an untested team like the Minnesota Timberwolves look Anthony Edwards has not done it on that kind of stage before he’s definitely taken a leap and is an absolute star player in the NBA but

You’ve got to wonder if is the stage too big do they have the right kind of preparation not that the Pelicans are like battle tested or anything else either but sometimes you just kind of default to like these guys have been here before they know what to do they

Can turn it on during that time that screams the Clippers more but I do think the center position there is more an advantageous for them however I think it’s a star driven league right we’re talking about the third the fourth fifth most important guy for the Pelicans in a

Matchup there I’d rather play the team that’s missing potentially a more important player in Carl Anthony towns and that’s why I kind of end up choosing the to go against the Minnesota Timberwolves unplay off tested potentially no Carl Anthony towns for a limited cat like that that makes me feel

A little bit better look we’ve seen what Kawhi Leonard can do in the playoffs you know Paul George has had success there as well so is James Harden even if they those two haven’t ultimately gotten to an NBA Finals you know that’s just a lot of perimeter like efficiency good play

Defense too that worries me a little bit I feel like there’s some more length there I feel like Zion has done well against Rudy goar in the past they played the Timberwolves pretty tough this year I like that much that matchup much better than the ERS But ultimately

It looks like these are one of the two teams or these are the two teams that the Pelicans will you know as things stand end up playing in the first round I say as things stand because the schedule gets a little bit tougher for New Orleans let’s look at that where

They going to get some wins what’s going to be a tough test of the schedule who can they is maybe a tossup let’s break that all down and look at that coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans right now though I’m excited to tell you

And we’ll end up finding out what happens now it’s not a guarantee that they’re going to play either of those two teams right they are still currently in the fifth seed as I’m recording this let me pull up the standings here and they’ve created a little bit of

Breathing room for the fifth spot and some Breathing Room against the playin tournament here they’re currently fifth two and a half games back of the Clippers that could change depending on what happens between Minnesota and the Clippers in this game that’s after recording the show their game and a half

Up on the Phoenix Suns they two game two and a half games up on the Sacramento Kings for the seventh spot as well there’s a little bit not much breathing room there which is good because the schedule gets tougher according to tank ofon they have the eighth toughest remaining strength of schedule now

That’s also because of one or two of the teams they play they still have a game against the Boston Celtics to go and that kind of skew this when you look on tank ofon basically every team when they have the toughest schedule left the Celtics are in there alongside like the

Nuggets and thunder the Pelicans have a game against the Celtics a game against the Thunder remaining so that’s where that kind of comes from too but the Clippers don’t have the Celtics on that schedule Minnesota doesn’t either though they have three games against the Denver Nuggets which will likely make or break

Their season so 18 games for the Pelicans left to go let’s try and kind of count some wins here you know when you look at this right now they have the Blazers twice I think that’s two wins there right after this home stand you go on the road and play the Nets the

Pistons that’s I think four wins right there so we’ve got four wins out of 18 that’s a good start I think you know you play the Spurs towards the end of the season I don’t think that’s the easiest matchup but are they going to be playing wanyama at that point do they even

Really care at that point I think that probably going to be a win and for kind of a joke here they play the Kings towards the end of the year as well they’ve dominated the Kings so far this season that’s a win so that’s I think when you look at the schedule we’re

Penciling these in that’s six wins right there you have a couple of games that let’s just kind of put on as losses right just to kind of even things out a little bit game against the Boston Celtics is likely going to be a loss I’d say maybe the one against the Milwaukee

Bucks who have started to figure things out as well is likely going to be a loss and one of the two remaining games against the Phoenix Suns is likely going to be a loss just because Kevin Durant is playing some really good basketball right now and from the game we saw

Earlier in the year it’s kind of wild that they’ve only played once so far the Suns have like just took it to the Pelicans with Devon Booker going off so you have a couple of other games that I think could be potential toss-ups right you have two games against the magic

That maybe you go one in one in that stretch so if they’re going to split the ones with the sun split the one with the magic they’re up to eight wins out of 18 games and then it’s the warriors on the road could be tough Lakers at home on

The final game of the regular season could be a tough one right the Miami Heat in Miami is not easy as well you know their schedule could be kind of up and down but again if we’re trying to get them to say 50 wins we counted six

Already right that gets them to 45 you know of those remaining 12 games they need to win about five of them and so if you go five and seven you know a little under 500 that puts the Pelicans in a tough spot in a good spot to get to

50 wins which should be enough to get you I think the maybe the fourth seed definitely the fifth seed for sure so overall they’re in an okay spot I think to be able to kind of fight for this it’s tough to see them truly falling into the plane tournament but you never

Know how things might go the Lakers have won more games than we’ve been expecting the Sacramento Kings I don’t really trust right now but that look they’re six and four in their last 10 games they haven’t been a joke either the Dallas Mavericks are still hanging around and

The Golden State Warriors look Steph Curry is out but is being cleared to play and is going to come back soon I don’t think they really have a chance it’s the worst that I think new orans could do is fall to eight which just means you need to win one game in the

Playing tournament as opposed to two and I think that’s a really important thing but they’re in a good spot but it’s nothing guaranteed so the Pelicans can’t do what they did earlier on in the year what they’ve done in the past when you play down to your level of competition

You know against the Orlando Magic who you’re like oh the magic aren’t good uh they’re fighting for a top four spot right they’re only a half game back of the four seed in the Eastern Conference they’re 37 and 28 that is a good squad right there they’ve been winning their

Games they’re playing tough-nosed defense you can’t take any of these games for granted you know those six like kind of paper wins guaranteed wins we said look they can surprise you if you don’t take it seriously enough I’m not worried about the Pistons the Blazers but the Spurs yeah the kings are

Going to want to go hard against the Pelicans here to get a little bit of Revenge and not lose five games in a season to them right you know the the the Spurs still being tough right the Nets have some guys that kind of want to

Prove things in the NBA I think even if they’re not particularly good so you look at some of those teams and it worries you a little bit you can’t fully guarantee that you’re going to get those wins and that it’s smooth sailing from here on out four five seed I don’t think

It ultimately matters after the first round you don’t have homecourt anyway if you’re going to be the four- seed bar in an upset that we don’t really see happening here so I think that kind of is a moot point four five doesn’t matter you’re end up playing the same the two

Teams are going to play the the same it really only matters for who starts that series at home versus on the road I’d rather start at home but we saw the Pelicans as the six seed a couple of years ago sweep the Trailblazers when they won the first two on the road then

Came home and took care of business so I think you can be in a fine spot either way but the schedule does get a little bit tougher with some losses on that schedule that I think like you’re like yeah those teams are kind of problems for New Orleans Boston’s a problem for

Everyone even though again New Orleans went up double digits on them couldn’t close the game out ended up losing they need to stop doing that can’t kind of play with your food with any of these remaining games Willie Green needs to kind of stick with what’s

Been working more on that when we talk about Jordan Hawkins in the next segment here I’m going to be really curious about this final matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder with both teams kind of playing at their best you know that game against the Clippers on Friday

Night in the Smoothie Kings Center is massive the Clippers will be on the second night of a back toback but they haven’t really been resting a ton of their guys and doing the whole load management thing so it’s a winnable game especially if they do end up resting him

But I don’t think they will knowing how big the stakes are this game tonight against the Cleveland Cavaliers is a team that has played really really good basketball this season and is right in a fight for the second seat um you know has a lot of length that can prevent uh

Pres present sorry some trouble for the Pelicans too so we’re really gonna see what this team is made of they’ve been beating up and like smoking a lot of real bad teams recently and I like that beating bad teams is what you’re supposed to do as a good team but as the

Schedule gets tougher nothing’s guaranteed and this is going to really show us who this Pelicans team is one of the things I said at the beginning of the year the final 15 games or so of the season are tough tough you need and that’s why you needed to stack those

Wins earlier on in the year and the Pelicans didn’t do that and some of those double- digit losses could come back to or sorry double digit blown leads could come back to haunt them we’re going to see though truly what they’re made of and if they’ve figured a

That much I saw a couple people freaking out I had a couple of texts about this being like wait what the heck’s going on here he should be in the rotation he should be with the team the g-league Squadron team had a game at 11:00 a.m. Central on a Tuesday Jordan Hawkins has

Not been getting sign significant minutes over these past couple of games unless he’s just getting run in a blowout which is great those aren’t the same kind of like competitive live ball reps and things like that in the in the last two games for the Pelicans he has

Not played at all in the blowout win over Toronto we played almost 10 minutes you know in the blowout Wind Over Indiana he played about seven minutes or so so when you’re looking at these past four games here and he’s played around 15 16 minutes uh this is a good way to

Get him some run you can do this on a Tuesday while the Pelicans are going through shooter practice nothing too hard just to get him some live ball reps that’s just going to kind of be more simulation of game time than it would be if he was here just kind of taking

Stationary shots in practice with the team sometimes reps are more important than instruction and I think that’s why they’re sending him down to the G League I’m not going to 100% guarantee this but what I would be willing to bet is Wednesday morning maybe when you’re

Listening to this will have gotten a PR email or the Pelicans would have announced that they’ve recalled him from the Squadron I think this is a way to just get him over to Birmingham get him some reps get him back and he’ll be on the bench Wednesday night against the

Cleveland Cavaliers and even if he’s not I’m okay with this the Pelicans are winning right now right that is your goal here in the NBA to win games and when you look at the rotation when you look at what the Pelicans are doing they’re playing good basketball right

Now they’re seven and three in their last 10 they have a four-game winning streak that’s the longest in the NBA currently there’s no reason to shake that up as much as I want to see Jordan Hawkins out there the guys that you’re playing are leading you to wins and that

Is the most important thing for these final 18 games we just went over the Pelican schedule it’s tough coming up and one of the things I’ve said and I think the Pelicans are doing this slightly on purpose too is they’re not trying to rock the boat too much keep

Doing what you’re doing and if that means unfortunately Jordan Hawkins isn’t playing that means unfortunately Jordan Hawkins shouldn’t be playing I don’t think there’s anyone in this rotation right now where you would cut their minutes to give them to Hawkins niji Marshall we talked about him in the show

The other day he’s been playing really great basketball for New Orleans and is winning his minutes Jose Alvarado is also winning his minutes right like those are important things to be doing and the bench is one of the reasons why the Pelicans have been absolutely killing it keep writing that yes you

Want to develop Hawkins yes not a marshall might not be here next season I don’t care win the basketball games that are in front of you and the Pelicans are doing just that with this rotation they have found something that works the offense is taking off it’s leading to

Even better defense as I’ve long said yes you want to have other Shooters there but if guys go cold you can then put in a Matt Ryan you can then maybe put in a Jordan ains but it doesn’t mean that he should be getting minutes right

Now he can get these minutes next season or in the future when you look at who is winning their minutes versus not right Jose Alvarado is right at the top Trey Murphy is right at the top Naji Marshall is at the top then it’s herb Jones who

Are you g to take out who plays a similar position for Jordan Hawkins one of the things to also kind of keep in mind Jordan Hawkins of guys who have played qualified minutes which is let’s remove Kyro Lewis Jr from this so 100 minutes or more Hawkins in almost a

Thousand minutes is a minus 10.1 he’s been losing his minutes when he’s out there on the court that’s not an ideal thing that you need in a playoff run when we just talked about seating and a tough schedule coming up developments nice that’s not where the Pelicans are

Right now they’re not the Pistons they’re not some of these other teams that yes should be playing young guys to kind of see what they have in them and get them some valuable reps win your games and what the Pelicans are doing right now is achieving that and I think

That’s the important thing to me and the only thing I want to see Jordan Hawkins can get minutes in the future we’ve seen enough from him to be very happy with what we’ve gotten from him this year but he should not be playing over guys like Naji Marshall over Jose Alvarado and

Some of the others just yet maybe eventually but right now with how those guys are playing how they’ve been playing this season they’ve earned those spots and they’re helping this team win games and this team wouldn’t have the record that they have if it was Hawkins

Taking those minutes and we want to make the playoffs right that’s a pivotal important thing for this team right now so that we can kind of see this team in action in the postseason and then kind of know what they need to do to adjust the roster and kind of move forward with

Trying to win a championship and Hawkins is going to help you achieve that right now could be a useful player don’t doubt that he’s going to get minutes and have big moments before the end of the regular season but I don’t think you need to make any changes right now so

Get him some reps in the G league but I think the move to send him down there to Birmingham playing that 11:00 a.m. game then come on right back to New Orleans and I wouldn’t be shocked if we get an email at some point saying hey we’ve recalled Jordan Hawkins he’s available

For tonight’s game against the I was just checking my my email to see if maybe it happened during the game didn’t um dur while I sorry while I was recording this so we’ll get that later but he shouldn’t be playing over some of these other guys because those guys have
