Be changed even more we’ll talk about that since the trades I think there’s some interesting things on there the defense got got a little worse since the trades well how they struggled is it fixable we’ll talk about that but I want to start here Luca donic has made some improvements this

Season that have gone unnoticed for the most part and maybe they’ve been noticed but they just haven’t been brought up enough and definitely not brought up by a show like this that covers the Dallas Mavericks every Fon corkas day like every single day we cover the Dallas

Mavericks I talk about the Mavericks and I have not talked about these two things specifically enough and so here I am giving it the time that it definitely deserves lucanic has improved at The Rim shooting at The Rim So within 3 feet by almost 10 percentage points from last year to this

Year last year so Luca Don’s shots within 10t last year he shot about 74 and a half percent the year before that about 77.8% really good the year before that about 70.8% he’s shooting between 70 and 78% great that’s those are really good percentages he’s right at the rim three

Feet is really close it’s kind of hard to have somebody between you and the basket if it’s three feet so some of these are un obviously a lot of these are are uncontested but still shooting a really good percentage right there at the rim this season he’s shooting 83% at The

Rim Shaquille O’Neal never shot over 79.2% within three feet Shaq never shot 80% and if Shaq didn’t do it then Luca doing it is very impressive to me and I think that this is something that he’s improved in his game I think his somehow his decision making has gotten better because he’s

Taking less shots from 0o to three feet so it’s not that oh all of a sudden he’s taking a ton of shots Giannis is obviously taking a ton more shots at that point L Luca used to take you know his second season in the league he shot

75% in this same area he took 26% of his shots from that area and so he took a lot more this season’s only about 12 and so about 12% of his shots and so the thing I think Luca has improved on and obviously it’s tongue and cheek saying

He’s better at The Rim than Shaq his percentage is this season than Shaq’s ever was so that is a true statement I stand by it I stand by the statement but the thing that Luca has improved is his decision-making I think I think he’s taking better shots and I’ll talk about

This in a second but his three-point percentage has gotten a lot better and so teams can’t allow him to take threes as much as they used as much as they used to he still does and I think that Lucas DEC decision- making as far as

Which shots to take when to go right to the rim when to stop for a little floater when to stop for a mid-range shot he’s just gotten better as the years have gone on and he’s definitely improved from last season and I think that’s something that’s really big the

Other thing that I think has helped this percentage having a lob threat having somebody that can set the Gortat screen in the paint so Luca gets into the paint and then there’s somebody between Luca and the basket and then Lively or Gafford or it was ran Holmes Dwight

Powell or Maxi comes over and screens that player in the paint and kind of just pushes them it’s not really an a legal screen a lot of the time and they get called for it every once in a while but they set that extra screen that back

Screen in the paint so the Luca can get to the rim and having somebody like that all the time a lively a Gafford a maxi who is is smart and knows how to set those screens a Dwight pal even having somebody like that I think makes Lucas’s

Path to the basket a lot better how many times this season have we seen laa driving into the lane and you go oh he’s going to throw it up he’s going to throw up the the alop because both Defenders are coming at Luca Luca’s former Defender from the screen and then the

Big man defender in the paint they’re both coming coming right at Luca and you think he’s gonna throw the alleyoop and then all of a sudden a screen from the big comes and then Luka just decides you know what let me just put this up let me just lay this up real

Quick that has added a lot and so having these lob threats makes it so that he can uh have easier shots at the basket I think this is such a positive thing for Luca overall 83% he’s shooting 83% from from within three feet that’s insane Shaq never shot over

79.2% in a single season within three feet Shaq shaquila the most dominant player of his era just would dunk over everybody shot under that’s insane to me the other Improvement that Luca has made this season that I think is massive and probably more important than the than

The dung and it’s not as impressive sounding as he shot better at The Rim than Shaq in any single season but it is more important I think is his three-point Improvement we have I have not talked enough about this this season Luca jumped from 34.2% from three last

Season to 38% this season big jump because he’s and he’s also taking two more threes a game massive improvement from Luca that is huge and honestly I think think he’s taking less diffic some less difficult threes it’s not like he’s taking a lot more he’s taking one more catch and

Shoot three a game and this is the area that he has actually improved percentage wise the most catch and shoot shots this season he’s shooting 43.4% on about two catch and shoot threes a game that doesn’t sound like a lot but the season before last season

When they missed the playoffs 35% on 1.1 a game the year before that 32% on won a game and that was the year that they were good he shot 32% on catch and shoot shots two years ago when they made the Western Conference Finals in this season he’s shooting

43.4% on two catch on two three Luca has improved his three-point shooting he has gotten a lot better at that he’s still taking step backs he’s making them he’s still taking the pull-up threes he’s still taking he’s still taking ridiculous shots that he shouldn’t take probably but he’s gotten better shooting

38% from the field there are only there’s only one other player in the league taking more threes than Luca and it’s the greatest shooter of all time Steph Curry Steph is shooting 12 threes a game Lucas is shooting 10 Luc is shooting 38% Steph is shooting 40.7 but

Here’s the area where Luca is better than Steph this season and this is the area that Luca has gotten so much better you will not believe this last season remember I said Luca shot 35% on catch and shoot shots he shot 34 % from three overall and

According to Synergy he shot 31% on unguarded catch and shoot shots in general that’s some there there’s some twos in there too 31% on unguarded nobody’s near him remember the shots you can you can visualize this shot I know you love the Mavericks and you watch almost every game and you can visualize

This shot last year Luca all by himself in the corner in the wing catches the ball he’s going to shoot it he’s not going to take a dribble or anything he’s about to take the and before this season you would have assumed that that shot was not going down it was one of

The most bizarre things about being a Mavericks fan or watching this team or watching this player consistently is that he would miss these unguarded gel shoot shots all the time it make no sense 31% last season this season are you sitting down 51% on unguarded catch and shoot shots Luca Don Curry

What a scrub only 49.7% on unguarded catch and shoot shots what a burger uh so Luca is shooting better than Curry on unguarded catch and shoot shots this season so the statement is still true he’s not a better shooter overall but the statement is still true that he’s shooting better

Than Steph at something but that improvement from Luca has been so big so big it’s why he’s scoring more points and it seems like it’s easier for him it’s definitely the scoring has definitely been easier for him this season than it has been last season and it’s because of his three-point

Improvement he’s taking two more threes a game and he’s you know hitting them at a higher clip four percentage points higher than last season his Improvement at the rim and his improvement from three have helped him take another step forward and it’s insane to me that somebody averaging 34 and a half points

Nine rebounds 10 assists under four turnovers a game those have gone down too shooting 50% from the field 38% from three and 79% from the free throw line that that player is not probably going to get top three in MVP that’s insane to me is what it

Is is what it is are we are where we are right now it’s because the Mavericks Mavericks had five more wins and they were like in fourth or fifth in the west he would probably be the the he would probably be man this I should have started with this Jason kid has cost

Luuka the MVP this season that’s probably where I should have started today coming up let’s get into let’s get into the Mavs defense why has it been worse since the trades is anything fixable what’s their big flaw in this we’ll talk about all that and more coming

About this team since the trades they’re eight and five they have the second best offense in that time 122 points per 100 possessions very good incredibly like mind blowing this is a stat that this is a stat like you know this stat where they say that there’s enough computing

Power in your phone that like we used the same amount of computing power to get to the moon in 1969 that is in your hand with the iPhone every day you know how like people say that if you told somebody in like 1990 that somebody would score 120 a team would score 122.2mi

This has only been about it’s about 13 games been about a month so it’s it’s not a huge sample size obviously but still but the Mavs are second in that time and number one is Boston at 128. s points per 100 possessions that’s that’s insane the

Maps are second and the next team is like six and a half points per 100 possessions better than them Boston has the Mavs game in there I think they were like at 140 in that game and then uh that that Warriors game where they destroyed him by 5050 they were they had

Like 150 offensive rating in that game so definitely skewed a little bit for Boston but still an insane number my point in all of it is the Mavericks offense has gotten better and so how have they gotten better what’s worked what’s changed couple things have

Changed so I I like to look at the you know where teams are taking shots at The Rim from mid-range and from three I like to look at all the all three of those different areas you know the three levels of scoring what’s change what’s working the Mavericks are before the trades we’re

Taking only 27.8% of their shots at The Rim that was 29th so it’s next to last they were not taking enough shots at The Rim before the tra even with Lively getting all the dunks even with Luca being better than Shaq at The Rim they still were not taking enough

After the trades that’s gone up to 30% so about three percentage points it’s gone up and now they’re 24th so they went from 29th to 24th in percentage of shots that they take at The Rim so they’re taking more shots at The Rim obviously Gafford Lively Luca being able

To uh get to them like maybe the Bulls game skewed that number more than anything because of how many shots they took at The Rim but they’re taking more shots at The Rim overall and that’s one thing that they’ve definitely changed is that’s definitely more efficient they’re

Taking those shots at The Rim taking advantage of it they’re taking about this they’re taking a little less mid-range shots before the trade they’re taking about 30% of their shots which is 20th in the NBA 30% of their shots came in the mid-range after the trade it’s about 26%

Their shots that go that went down to 26th that’s actually a big drop there so they’re taking more shots at The Rim less mid-range shots the only other one that kind of stood out to me they’re taking the same amount of Threes a ridiculous amount like 40% they’re Corner threes before the

Trades they took about 133% of their shots from corner three I was first in the NBA they’re taking the most Corner threes in the league think about all the Derrick Jones Jr open threes the Grant Williams open threes the you know obviously like the Tim Hardway Jr open

Threes don’t think about those too hard the Josh Green corner like think about all those so 133% number one in the NBA before the trades since the trades they’re only taking about 10% that’s 13th in the NBA so they’ really dropped off with their Corner threes they’re not taking as many

Partially I think it’s because of PJ Washington he doesn’t hit Corner threes that well Derrik Jones Jr is playing less Josh Green is playing less Tim Hardaway is playing less they’re playing more bigs and so you’re you’re playing with you you’re trying to get to the rim

A little bit more and so I think all those Corner threes turned into shots at The Rim which I think is a positive thing for the regular season definitely and so that’s something to watch out for but I think that that’s one of the reasons why the Mavs offense has been

Better more shots to the rim less mid-range shots less Corner threes you would think that taking more Corner threes would be better that that has been the case in the NBA but because I think they’re turning some of those Corner threes into you know Lucas taking you know better catch and shoot threes

From everywhere the geometry of the court has kind of changed for the Mavericks a little bit they can’t take as many Corner threes because of their bigs I think too because because of the spacing if you always have somebody in the dunker spot that takes away one player from one of

The corners because if you’ve got Gafford or Lively hanging out in the dunker spot and the dunker spot is like one of the blocks you know in the basketball court you got the paint and then right to the left to the right of the rim in the paint is those blocks

Just like the little rectangles so if you got one guy hanging around there all the time it’s hard to have somebody in that same corner on that same side and like still space the floor as well so they’ve got more guys hanging out they’re taking the same amount of Threes

Right so it’s not like they take less Corner threes they’re taking less threes overall they’re taking about the same amount so those Corner threes have just turned into non- Corner threes and for PJ Washington you want that to happen because apparently he’s terrible at corner threes but good at the any any

Other kind of three player shots I like to look at this too who’s getting more or less shots since the trades Kyrie and Luca exact same amount of shots that’s not going to change change was not surprised by that at all Luca still taking 23 shots a game Kyrie still

19 the player that lost the most amount of shots was Grant Williams he went from 6.7 shots a game to zero obviously but no Grant’s shots 6.7 from Grant turned into 9.7 shots a game to PJ Washington it’s probably that’s definitely better Tim Hardway Jr actually lost the most

Shots from from before trade to after trade he taking five less shots a game he was taking 14 and a half shots a game before the trades taking nine now Josh Green’s taking two less shots a game and so you go on but overall the the shot

Diet is is basically the same for all those guys they’re taking more shots at The Rim less Corner threes less midrange same amount of Threes overall and the offense has has worked because of it because of more more efficiency at The Rim Luca has been better from three

Better at The Rim the Mavs have two lob threats now they’re more versatile and I think that’s something that has has really helped them in their offense coming up let’s talk about the defense and then let’s talk about the rotation how the rotation has changed I’m curious

About the same but it’s gotten worse overall so what’s the problem with the defense is it fixable I started look at you know I also looked at so the same way that I looked at the offense I looked at how what percentage of shots the Mavs are allowing on defense the Mavs are

Allowing less shots at The Rim they went from about 32 and a half% to about 30% so they’re allowing only the sixth the sixth least amount of shots at The Rim which is good they’re not allowing shots at The Rim which is a very positive thing less shots at The Rim the

Same amount of mid-range shots and they’re allowing a little more threes before the trades about 36% of the shots that teams took against the Mavericks were from three and since then it’s about 38% so it’s gone up about two percentage points so the maps are allowing less shots at The Rim same

Amount of mid-range and more threes overall and so some of these teams have gotten really hot from three and then the maps have a bad the Pacers the Cavs obviously the Celtics the sixer I can’t remember if the Sixers did off the top of my head but but that’s something that’s how the

Defense has changed a little bit since the since the TR have happened the one thing though that I can tell is a trend that we’ve talked about a couple times but it just really puts into perspective when you lay out which teams they’ve had good defenses against and which teams

They’ve had bad defenses against they’ve had bad defenses against good offenses and they’ve had good defensive games against Bad offenses does that surprise you at all in any way but I think the one difference between these these group of teams is that the Mavs when they play against the real

Point of attack guard tyres maxi Mitchell Darius Garland any of the the Celtics Tyrese Maxi they’ve had their wor they’ve had awful defensive games 141 points per 100 possessions against the Pacers 121 against the the Sixers 140 against the Celtics 123 against the Cavs and it’s when they have

A guard that can get their own shot that’s a point of attack I’m gonna drive I’m gonna fig the Tyrese Maxi just flying by guys Tyrese Halbert just flying by guys Donovan Mitchell just flying by guys the maps have have really struggled in that area and I think

That’s one of the reasons why moving Derrick Jones Jr to the starting lineup has helped now the good defensive games the Mavs have had since the trads have been against Chicago that was a great one they don’t have a point of attack Garden Detroit they have Kade Cunningham the

Mavs put a double team on him completely changed the game Miami they didn’t have Tyler hero they don’t have a point of attack guard really and their game against them was only average defensively but I’ll count that it’s good for the Mavs average is good for this Mavs team the Spurs in

Washington they don’t really have point of attack guards either OKC is the one that just doesn’t make any sense they had a really good defensive game against OKC that very first game after the trades it was an afternoon game just a weird one where OKC does have point of

Attack guards and they do have lots of options and they just didn’t have a good game and so I’m kind of throwing that one out that one I’m not putting in either category but I think the Mavericks are allowing more threes teams have gotten hot from three there’s been

Some bad luck there but then there’s also they have trouble against guards that can really penetrate and attack when you’ve got a lot of switching and a lot of a lot of things moving a lot of moving Parts their rotations have been really confused and really trying to

Figure out who’s here and what’s there and then you got Luca and Kyrie and everybody’s around and running around like a you know chicken with their head cut off that I have seen by the way they just run around and it’s the weirdest looking thing no head just

Running just pure Instinct chicken run that movie title it’s true they do they run no head and they’re just going that’s how the that’s how the defense has changed a little bit they still struggle against point of attack guards that’s like a duh thing if you’ve watched the Mavericks but uh it’s

Something they’ve got to get better at if they go this summer and can get a herb Jones or somebody like that ojan anobi type they can get somebody like that MAV team will really clean up a lot of things last thing I want to get into is the rotation minutes changes since the

Trades the players that have lost the most amount of minutes since the trade Dwight Powell down 10 and a half minutes a game and his minutes now are basically all garbage time that’s been huge Derek Jones Jr down 10 minutes a game since the trades that’s kind of

Surprised me a little bit because he’s been starting lately and so maybe that’ll go up a little bit but even in some of the games he started recently it’s not like he’s been playing a ton of minutes and so that’s something to that’s something to watch as well where

Does his time go and how does he play how much does he play going forward because yeah even look at the games he started he played 12 minutes 18 minutes and 16 minutes in the three games he started now the MS won those games and and pretty easily in in two of

Them but still not playing a ton and he’s definitely playing less well he had a couple games since the trades where he played seven minutes eight minutes that’s been an interesting one to me because what do they do what do they do with him we had that conversation me and slightly yesterday

About would you rather instill more confidence and and play drik Jones Jr more or Josh Green more to end the season Tim Hardway Jr is down eight and a half minutes since the trades that’s not been surprising at all he’s also played a lot worse since the trades

Jaden Hardy is down 8.2 minutes he wasn’t playing consistently before the trades anyway but still he’s down a lot that’s not surprising either especially exom coming back from injury that affected him as well Derek Lively is down 6.7 minutes you got two centers pal losing a lot of minutes and

Lively losing 6.7 minutes that has kind of surprised me too Gafford obviously has affected that they played small a lot too recently especially getting PJ Washington they can play small a little bit more and those small ball units have been more effective with PJ than they

Were before the trades and so I think that’s really affected it too Dante XM is down 4.1 minutes I think that’s just injur straight up injury prevention they’re they’re trying not to run him into the ground because he’s very important and he’s been very helpful Josh Green is down 1.8 minutes that’s

Not very surprising at all Luca is down one minute per game since the trades and that is a huge positive anytime you can play luuka a little less and still win eight out of the 13 games that you play that’s a good thing Kyrie is playing more he’s playing 1.4 Point minutes per
