But just tell me what your impressions were CU look this I mean it’s obviously the biggest NBA podcast but book doesn’t do a lot of these in general so sometimes it’s nice to just hear from the star player of the team we all care about in a more loose environment rather

Than answering you know idiots like me’s questions after games and whatever what do you think of the conversation overall it was cool like seeing him talk about like just growing up and why he like how he fell in love with basketball his family stuff like it’s good to just know

More about him because we really don’t we know about the cars we know about the dog and we know about like his dating but we don’t really know about book’s life for the most part so it was cool just seeing him sit back and chop it up

With JJ and just talk about growing up and hooping and being from Grand Rapids and moving to Mississippi just hearing about all that stuff and hearing it from him was pretty cool yeah it’s cool like I think the I don’t even it sounds obvious to say maturity but maybe that’s just me

The the like part of us having kind of watched his whole career speaking there a little bit just that there is a level of I guess Poise might even be a better word for it that comes out where like even I I laughed at the comment he made about how he still

Keeps kind of a tight Circle which I think we all know but that he’s at a point now where he’ll tell his dad to shut up about criticism about his game and whatever and it’s like I guess that kind of is where he is you know what I mean like he’s he’s accomplished

Everything there is and JJ even asked him a question to that end of like you have literally the biggest possible contract you can have you’ve made the finals obviously winning a championship is a driving force for everybody but like these long Seasons what even do you

What do you even do you care about and he was like yeah I guess you just kind of find a way to piss yourself off every day like get up for that game and it’s just weird to think that book is in the vet kind of

Superar main stay in the top of the league one of them ones as he called himself a few times type of place in the league like that just is weird I’m like what happened to the dude who’s like 19 I don’t know it’s just kind of funny

Yeah I think like he came into the league like that and he kind of brought it up like he’s been playing against older people since he was a kid and I get on this a lot of like a lot of times with younger people in general they all

Grow up playing only against each other they don’t really play against grown-ups like people used to come up doing that so I think he’s like one of the last people that’s part of like that Old Guard even though he is like still pretty young he grew up the way that a

Lot of those vets back in the day did like playing against older people and having a dad that was tough and having an older brother like they kind of forced him to be mature earlier than probably a lot of dudes get to be yeah and I would say that’s probably

Part of why he connected so much with like PJ Tucker and Tyson Chandler and those guys as he once he did get to the league cuz it was it’s almost like he was needing that or like his soul was attracted to finding like he wasn’t going to relate to like

Um Archie Goodwin or something right like he was he was gonna he was going to need those guys all right so basketball-wise I thought JJ got some good stuff out of book as far as the way that he’s been guarded in the evolution of obviously the thing that lost them

Their most disappointing playoff series of his career in against Dallas in 2022 which is those blitzing defenses sending two to the ball reick brought up that it was I think books like third or fourth in the league and how many times he’s faced that coverage this season and

That’s including the injuries um I think he said he was he was like second or third and Brunson just like Brunson just passed him I think JJ said but yeah like he they’re going to send it until we can fix it and he said that too right in

Terms of the fourth quarters and stuff that like it is uh it’s still a work in progress I guess but he also said he doesn’t think that’s going to work do you agree with that do you do you think that the Suns have have gotten to the point where come

Postseason time that is just going they’re going to be able to burn that consistently or is it something you still worry about because I don’t know where I wor I don’t worry about it like I think the fourth quarter issues he even got on that they just they try to

Play prevent offense and it slows down and they just kind of overpass like all the fourth quarters trying to run the time down and not make a mistake and I think if they just keep the same Pace stuff which he says it’s just they just

Get into lows and the JJ said they just try to hunt switches when you have three really good scorers on the floor you should just play the way you play instead of playing preent offense and I think once the possessions get tighter I think it’s going to be a lot easier in

The playoffs to like Brad’s gonna want to Chu KD Is Gonna want to get the shots up I think once those guys are more aggressive and trust each other because they still haven’t really played that long I think once they trust each other and kind of are ballog sometimes I think

The fourth quarter stuff will figure stuff out there were some people in the comments on the show that I did the other day where KD after that Cavs game was us it used the phrase spontaneous basketball that as a as a positive and I was like yes I I agree I think that’s

How this team has to play You can disagree with how they built the roster but given that that’s what the roster is to me that’s how they have to play that’s how they should be playing I think that’s really for most of Durant’s career how he’s played he’s never played

With the traditional point guard which I think gets kind of lost when people talk about how they did end up building this roster and now they’re now playing is maybe there was maybe this was purposeful not an accident yeah what do you think of that concept because I

Think that kind of goes into conjunction with the fourth quarter stuff with the blitzing defenses the like purpose full Randomness it kind of feels like that’s just what they have to get reps on and it it’s going to be frustrating I don’t know if there’s a way around that but do

You agree that’s kind of the the blueprint here yeah I think it’s Randomness and I think like Point book and they talk about that a lot I think Point book has been pretty good but a lot of the off ball stuff you can tell they’re making an effort to get KD to

Start the offenses off and so book can be off ball a lot more and even when book was out like the pace just seemed a little better because book kind of does dribble the ball and wait for the time to get a little low to start the offense and

Things were starting a lot faster when Beal was kind of initiating offense or KD so I think once they can kind of get that habit out of book even though sometimes it is good to slow it down he just got a little bit too much Chris

Paul in him sometimes so I think that’s exactly what I was gonna say yeah he learned a little too much from his from his mentor there yeah yeah so I think if book can kind of just speed up the process a a little more I think a lot of

The fourth quarter stuff gets figured out because that’s really when it starts is when book kind of sits at half court and dribbles and waits for the pick for uh Eubanks or nerk to come up and set the screen and I think all that stuff just takes way too long when Bill

Touches it he’s going and he’s starting it and I think that’s just kind of where we need to start at when it comes to Fourth quarters and maybe part of it and I I think we almost like how much we’ve all talked about this we’re so far in

The rap hole on it that we’re talking about it in in way more granular detail sometimes than the players are even able to be thinking about it in real time like and I think that’s some of what I’m getting at when I’m agreeing with Duran on the spontaneous basketball thing is

It’s like we can all chart it out and draw little diagrams of who should have the ball win and exactly what should happen but the reality is there’s 24 seconds to figure this stuff out and they’re trying to win games so it’s not always possible but I do think some of

It might just be as simple as hey maybe maybe you try to have it where book initiating the way that he likes to maybe you try to limit that to only being at the times when you actually are slowing things down on purpose right and

That can just be a way to to make up for what we know are some bad habits from him and if if it’s a time of the game where they’re trying to get in a flow and play quickly then let anybody on the court ticket up for all I care you know

But then when they know they need a great possession and and they’re fine taking some time maybe then it is book and I think that can be balanced and I agree the balance has been a lot better lately but uh let’s pivot to Kevin Durant a little bit

He is having an amazing season I feel bad almost every single night when I can’t just spend like 15 minutes on a recap show just talking about how awesome of a game he had but it’s just it’s just obvious at this point but he’s on a tear even maybe better than any

So Aaron KD is on a tear right now he’s been on a tear All Season he’s been healthy all season somebody pointed this out I think it might have been Nick Wright on a podcast that he’s actually free throw shooting is the one thing holding him back from a 50490 season

Which is like the part that you always just think is gonna click in there no matter what um but he’s at 85 right now but he’s 53 57% from two 43% from three 85% from the line 29 points per game rebounding assists where they’ve always been and the defense has been you know

Single-handedly some nights it feels like he’s the the the main difference maker able to take on some of these matchups and be a helper and all the stuff that they’ve really needed to improve on that end of the Court what’s impressed you most about KD season

Before we dive into him versus Tatum and all that kind of stuff what do you think is like the biggest part of his case if you were going to make it I think it’s the fact that he should at the very least be all uh all defense second team I think like

Adding that to his offense the fact that he’s been such a good Defender and holding it down on his own sometimes I think just the fact that he’s probably gonna be second Team all defense makes him all NBA first team like he’s he carries a lot of the scoring loads like

We all know like how he can go off at any moment and how he’s kind of been the only healthy person on this team like throughout this whole season I think those things combined makes him all NBA given just like how much he have to

Carry this team to even be a six seed right now yeah the amount of nights where he’s putting up these numbers and having to do it by himself I mean even even some games where Beal was healthy and book wasn’t like that really wasn’t Bradley Beal to be honest with you obviously

That that one Spurs game where book came back and was bad like the first three quarters like even if you just you can’t even look at it as the games where he’s been the only healthy guy cuz you could probably had four five six more where he

Was not even the only healthy guy but he was the only productive guy and you’re getting up to I don’t even know almost half the season where he’s been really the the backbone of the team on both ends of the court and yeah the the past four

Games 35 35 45 37 shooting at least 41% from the field in all of those games and most Knights going to have a ton of assists as well I just think it’s uh it’s crazy and how do you feel about this I saw I think ryb on Twitter

Put it this way the other day um RB R YB I don’t even know what the acronym is so I don’t know what to call them I know it’s RB I know yeah yeah great great follow I’m sure most people listening have seen his stuff out there before but

He put it that like KD’s doing all this with pretty much all of his athleticism sapped yeah does that feel fair is that is that just hyperbole I don’t know if it’s all gone but he’s certainly not OKC Durant anymore that one dunk he had I guess he called OKC

Durant but other than that yeah I think like he can take off and like he can still like dunk and go off but I think it’s like the handle stuff like you can tell even by the way people guard them like they don’t trust the the cross left

Cross right pullup like as much as like they’re not as scared of it as they used to be because it’s slower like that’s just what happens with your age and he pulls it out every once in a while and you could tell when he really has his

Legs under him because you still can’t really guard it he hit Aaron Gordon with it a couple times like I just think that the fact that he’s doing this and he’s kind of Aging into what he is now he can still get to his spots his famous

Warm-up routine is heard of from all across the NBA I think he practices all those shots because he knows his spots pretty easily and when he gets there it seems automatic like there’s nobody I trust more with four minutes left and needing a bucket than KD in the

Mid-range and and getting a a high pick and roll like I think that if Katie gets to that free throw line I trust him more than anybody and I think the fact that you can still say that about him is a huge case for maybe age isn’t really

That big a deal for him yeah he’s on Pace to have more dunks this season I think than the past two combined so he has kind of dipped back into the Fountain of Youth a little bit so maybe that’s part of why I don’t want to fully

You know bury his athleticism but at the same time I do think his physic his AB his ability to absorb contact and be physical has to me at least maybe it’s just something you only appreciate watching him and maybe it’s always been there to a degree and I’m just you know

Seeing it more but the fact that even though the handle is is weakening I think he just maybe doesn’t can’t quite get and totally understandable can’t quite get the bend in his lower body so some of those drives that we remember from when he was on the Thunder where he’s just catching

Ball off a pin down and he’s like you know at a freaking 45 degree angle running toward the basket and it’s just like what do you do this guy’s about to you know you have to foul him or he’s going to dunk on you that type of stuff

Is not as common I still think he might run into a wall of of a defense and just still get his shot up it’s always been unblockable but now it feels like he just has the balance and the core strength that has grown over time and I

Think he he leans on that a little bit more than he used to um all right so talked about the defense too I I think I think we’ve covered what it makes him special so I think it’s going to come down to him versus Tatum would probably be my my

Guess as far as all NBA goes I know it’s positionist you know Bill Simmons got some Flack recently for saying he wasn’t going to abide by that but luckily it doesn’t really matter for first team I don’t think because joic is making first team yeah anyway I think honestly the

Thing that could have come up more this year would have been if the guys voting would have actually put two centers cuz embiid could have made it but I think we’re going to get a pretty standard first team because the candidates just break down that way but I think Shay and

Yic are locks ad I think he might be defensive player of the year ad is a first team yeah I just his defense has been really incredible this year so you’d have him over both Duran and Tatum or what do you think um actually it’s hard to put him in over

KD just because the team has been so bad so yeah I guess ad can’t be first team like yeah he’d have probably have to be second team I just think it’s really hard to have a player be up for defensive player of the year and play as

Well as he’s been playing on defense and put them second team that’s just weird to me yeah defensive player of the year is going to be an interesting one especially if goar if this thing he went out with last night actually cost him more than just a handful of

Games and and the games played starts to get interesting but okay so ad that that that could be a candidate I think is Luca lock for first team or is the team success going to get in the way there what do you think they’re weird when it comes to him

I think since he’s already been first team I can see them just doing it again but yeah the team’s not good like I don’t know how they’re going to treat that at all he should be because he’s Luca and he’s that good and going to be technically an MVP candidate every year

For like the next five to six years but first team when Shay is playing so well Shay’s uh pretty much a lock but wasn’t it Darren Fox last year like I think that somebody had to come out but yeah I think that Luca probably goes in so we have Shay Luca

Jic what about Tatum versus Durant where do you fall on that one I think the Celtics being so good and even though I don’t think this has been like the best Tatum season I think the fact that the Celtics have been so good probably is going to get him in there

He’s been Tatum is and the team’s been great so that might get him the edge but KD has just been incredible the only other one I would say might be able to push his way in would be Anthony Edwards given what he’s been able to do in a couple of pretty

Big wins against the Pacers and the Clippers now with cat out although cat posted the uh Dragon Ball Z screen cap on his Instagram story today of being brought back to life so maybe he’s uh maybe he’s returning sooner and actually could send an back in the other

Direction but ant I think if he you know he’s he’s had these monster games if he keeps that up voters will have that fresh in their mind if they’re even in a top two three seed let alone maybe getting the one seed still that’ll go a long way

I would say I think I could easily see Durant making it in over Tatum as well as Luca because with Tatum I actually think the recent conversation has been so weird and we’re so used to picking nits in his game that I actually think like he I don’t want to say he’s going

To be underrated but he might be undervalued in terms of I agree you kind of just should reward the best guy on a historically good team which is what the Celtics are whether you kind of like it or not and that should matter but I think like

You got to remember like the the people voting on this are just as swayed by podcasts and crap as anyone else like these are beat Riders who don’t watch Jason Tatum every night they they got to kind of find a way to make their decision too and maybe that actually hurts him and

Then with Luca I just to me it’s kind of hard even though it’s Luca even though the numbers are always there he’s on this historical tear right now too it’s like well if Durant’s six seeds ahead of him or something I don’t I don’t know I

Don’t know I do think winning does seem to win out a lot of the time for these guys so and then ad the same way I I just I do think some voters will lean back toward maybe for a few years as we get used to this still having it kind of be

Segmented out positionally even if it’s subconscious so I would think ad probably doesn’t crack in with the Lakers being as bad although they’re the Lakers people could easily just give them a bump for familiarity they’re always being talked about ad’s been healthy which is something he hasn’t

Always been so I think Duran has a very good case I do think this will come down to the wire but obviously he’s deserving I mean there’s probably 10 all there’s probably 10 to 12 First Team all-nba Caliber guys every single season that’s why we have three teams but you

Mentioned all all you mentioned all defense he’s never made one of those so even that would be a real achievement if he could get there and then the other part is just winning a first team all NBA this late in your career I mean you’re talking about very very few guys

I don’t know the list probably like Kareem LeBron and I don’t know Carl Malone Michael Jordan there’s there’s probably not a lot that have actually achieved that so something to watch for for sure just another piece of his legacy but let’s uh pivot to this Celtics rematch get aon’s thoughts on

Inconsistency of this team I think the Suns themselves were a little surprised at the level of defensive intensity no book you could take it a lot of different ways as far as what your read on how much you should factor that game into evaluating this team right now what

Did you think where where did you come away from that game feeling um they got ran off the line pretty well I think the Celtics are just really good at that in general and they went out made it specific like they weren’t going to let Grayson go off and

They made it pretty obvious early on so I think that’s probably one of them and just getting better against big teams like I think they just weren’t expecting like the size and just like how strong they were and they just kind of have a hard time with big teams rebounding wise and just

Kind of defensive wise too so I think that’s probably like the big thing I took away is the sense just needing to learn what they want to do against bigger teams yeah it’s a version of you know the the Mavs Once Upon a Time the Raptors game earlier this

Year these types of the Clippers at times like these types of rangy teams have always given the Suns problems I I think that’s fine it’s fine to have a weakness but I do feel like obviously book being back is is huge and I want to correct porzingis is still out and Jaylen is

Questionable so we’ll see how that all plays out but um I think they’ll be better solving that stuff the second time around I even think that would have been the case if book hadn’t come back personally because I just think they they did see seem a little Shell Shocked especially coming

Off the Nuggets game and the Raptor game where they were able to really just be in a good flow and play a little faster and their defense was starting to play with some energy and then it was like they just ran into a really good team

You know and a team that had a lot to play for themselves because the Celtics were coming off a couple bad losses and yeah I think played pretty hard so I don’t know I would say it’s really to me about the offense I actually think the Suns like Tatum

Just didn’t have a great night but that happens I didn’t did you have a problem with the defense I thought that was not really my concern no I didn’t like for the most part they’ve been kind of clicking and I know uh vogle talks about the shell all the time and they’ve been

Helping and like the shell really looks like tight when they’re on I the Cavs game was in that first half was pretty insane but once they turn it on and they have with like within the last couple weeks the defense is look good like it seems like they’re finally connecting

And talking and playing pretty well so I kind of haven’t had problem with their defense for a while now no I I agree and I talked about it yesterday that you know the stats show it’s improved little by little over the course of the Season they’re up to above

League average in terms of where they rank defensively so yeah I I had a little bit of a theory I was going to roll out if porzingis did play that it actually makes the Suns match up with them better because of the nurkic factor with all of

This but we’ll we’ll have to wait until potential NBA Finals to see if that’s true or not the only other things here would just be as we get ready for this Boston game tonight uh Damen Lee is traveling with the team and nir little is now probable I don’t

Think either one of those guys are going to factor in when Josh aogi is healthy but I do worry a little bit about this aogi situation given that it was initially called a hip and then it became an abdominal strain and it just gets weird when it starts to be longer

Than expected and different diagnoses being thrown around so we’ll see how that plays out while he’s still out I do wonder if either one of those guys could factor in but I think that might speak more to the sun’s still being kind of thin than anything else like if Damen

Lee’s playing in a playoff series I think you know probably going to get a little dicey no matter what the rest of the rotation looks like yeah I think if yeah if Damen Lee’s on the court then something kind of went wrong I I it’s pretty you can tell voc’s kind of

Figuring out his eight right now and I think he’s close once aogi gets back he’s still trying to figure out a couple of those things the big situation is probably gonna Eubank I gotta ask you about that I mean your relationship with Drew Eubanks has been very up and down

As I think it has been for a lot of people where where are we um it I’m just going with the flow with it right now I think it what was the the game where he went off against Chicago or whatever after him and uh

What’s his name got into it I think that was like the peak of probably the Drew Eubanks experience that we’re gonna get out of that but yeah he’s just really frustrating A lot of the time I still don’t it was was vogle just protecting the uh religious traditions

Of his stars of his starting center and and kind of gaslighting fans about how they could have gone to nkic but they liked what Eubanks was doing the other night or was Eubanks actually earning that in vogel’s mind I I don’t know where I I don’t know what

To believe here I feel like the coach is playing mind games with us because I cannot truly believe that he wanted Eubanks out there to close a game why did it take till game 60 to do that if he liked it so much yeah especially when we were giving up so many offensive

Rebounds to close that game out I just don’t see how you don’t put the big the best offensive our best rebounder on the floor when you can’t secure the ball like we mostly just needed to secure the ball and he just wouldn’t do it so that’s one of the Vogal things that’s

Gonna be frustrating is kind of just how he Clos his games out I don’t want him to go small every time but Jesus Christ I can’t have Eubanks out there either no it’s uh yeah it’s going to be interesting I mean I think this game on

On Thursday night as well as the Bucks game on Sunday like those are tests and those are two different kinds of teams they’re both pretty healthy assuming Jaylen plays that are GNA be two different kinds of tests and they’re on the road and everything else so I mean

Honestly to me more so than reps or scheming or anything like that book being healthy just to be on the court in those tests I think is going to be really valuable so I think yeah him him having the ball in his hands more and being able to really get them organized
