Utah Jazz embark on last east coast road trip will the defense come with them

Are we going to see 300 points tonight are we G to see 310 could we see 320 probably not but with these defenses you never know it’s next unlocked on Jazz you are locked on Jazz your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz part of the locked on podcast Network your team every Day how are you I am David lock radio voice of the Utah Jazz Jazz mbn here today we’ll look at whether with these two defenses which have both not been very good we’re going to see 300 points tonight the Jazz have simplified their defense it’s gotten much better the last

Two games and it’s probably the most important thing about this road trip Jazz will see Quinn Snyder for the first time tonight we’ll discuss that road trip tasks and we’ll look around the league as well on a Tuesday edition which is a little bit of a Monday

Edition because I didn’t do a show yesterday I’ll explain in a second on that I Am David lock radio voice Utah jazz jazz MBA Insider and this is locked on Jazz your daily podcast of Utah Jazz giving you Insight expertise geeky numbers and hopefully making it way better to be a jazz

Fan each and every day thank you so much for taking the time to make locked on Jazz your first listen of the day we are free we’re available on all podcasting apps and we’re also on YouTube join the conversation there send me a little note

On tweet Twitter or X at D9 and please five star reviews and thumbs up on the YouTube are always available uh are always appreciated and to those of you that are everyday or thank you all right few notes I had probably the most people ever come by and say hi the last two

Home games I loved it thank you very much for doing so I’ll do my best I ran out of stickers I did not expect that kind of thing so I will pack more stickers thank you very much for all that that’s really was great I love it

Um it’s hard during a broadcast but if I have a moment in between or before I’ll pop a headset off say hi quickly um if I can uh so thank you very much I I super appreciate when I’m walking around the arena beforehand it’s great to get your

Energy and your juice um so I do appreciate that and thank you very much for uh everyone who stopped by um and said hi a few notes we only did Audio Only on Saturday because lock on the whole network was switching platforms and so there was no place to put our

Audio for a day um and so that’s why locked on you postcast was only on audio the other day and it is not uh that will not be the case tonight we’ll have both for you uh yesterday I did not do a show because I actually It’s Kind of a Funny Story

Hopefully you’ll laugh um I actually went yesterday to Arizona to watch my daughter play a college golf tournament and then so what I did I’m only sharing this because it’s hopefully it’s funny is I think we you guys may have heard I have a van so I finished the Jazz game

And I just slept in the van and then took a 555 flight to Phoenix and then watched her play and then flew to Atlanta so I’m now with the team um yesterday so there just was no window for which I could get a show out yesterday so that’s that’s why um I want

To share something weird this is not about the Jazz this about life that uh and my wife will be mortified that I Shar this um and she’s mortified that I do this but I love it and I just had the best experience this morning and I just

Want to share it so we all say Hi how are you Hi how are you oh I’m good yeah to everyone and no one gives a crap it’s like the most false interplay between two humans that exists in society I this is deep crap this is me being really

Weird here so if you spend this much time with me as an every dayer um you get it if you’re a first- Time listener then um this is not what we usually do and we’ll get right to the Jazz and the Hawks and and how many points we’re going to see tonight and

Get ready for the road trip but I just wanted to share this because I just had such a cool I’ve had about four or five really cool experiences with this so I wanted to share it with everyone and see if they want to do it also um so it’s

Really always bothered me this like kind of bull crap human interaction which has no sincerity no authenticity to it at all where we just say Hi how are you or you know you get coffee from someone Hi how are you oh good great you actually don’t care so I started asking people what’s

The most exciting thing in their life or what’s the best thing that’s happened today if it’s later in the afternoon so I come up like today I went to go get a spoon and truthfully I got a fork she gave me thing it didn’t have a spoon but

That’s fine um and I and I came up to their little hostess table and I asked what’s the most exciting thing going on in your life and I this one woman told me about the school she’s taking and how she’s broken through as a student and she’s just so

Proud of herself because she’s been able to become a better student it’s where she’s college right now and she just was never a good student and she can just see that I was like so cool and the other one was super honest with me and said that she like honestly she’s like

I’ve been able to come to work without anxiety and depression for all this time I just feel so great like it was just such a cool and the other day in Washington DC I asked um one of the guys who was out front of the hotel and he’s

From Ethiopia and his family was coming to the United States to live with him and he’d been here for eight years and he’d F he has gotten citizenship and now he finally gotten his wife and his child approved and they were moving to the US and they were arriving on Tuesday like

It was so uplifting it was so amazing and in Indianapolis I actually asked this question to the woman behind at the at the salon or the the B when we walk into the gym and she told me she’d met pink and then that meant that I love

Pink and that pink was in Indianapolis so I got to go see her concert so that was good for me but it’s just this great way and hey I’m an extrovert and I get my energy from other people if you’re an introvert you do it by quiet and you

Want to be so this sounds like the worst thing you’ve ever heard in your entire life so it’s for each their own but it try it try it for a day you got to be extroverted you gotta be a little confident you gotta be a little bizarre

You got to be willing like my wife will kill me if I do it when I’m with her she’s an introvert um but it’s kind of fun ask someone what instead of Hi how are you and having an interchange of words that mean nothing take a second pause and

Legitimately ask them what the most exciting thing in their life is and I bet you will get more good stories and happiness and energy from that than you will all right life hacks from lock that are probably totally ridiculous kind of an arrogant uh initials on my part to be telling

You um somebody asked me today would you ever a book I was oh my God no the most arrogant thing you could possibly do in my book is like write a book sorry for those who’ve done it um which gives advice to other people like I’m just

Trying to survive every day are you kidding me um all right so anyway I just kind of wrote like a short little chapter of a book and it was obnoxious and I apologize all right so tonight Jazz and the Hawks first of a road trip

And I think you guys have this but like we just went on a stretch defensively that quite honestly was pretty horrific um if you looked over the last 20 games in the NBA or even over the last 15 now we had the worst defense in the NBA which is not ideal

And not only did we have the worst defense in the NBA we have a 123.5 defensive rating which is the equivalent of the Celtics offense in that time stretch which is a 123 and a 123.5 defensive rating if for an extended period of time would be the

Worst defensive like ever in the history of the NBA because the offense is so good right now so it’s a little misleading but it’s not great well in that time period there’s only been one other team that’s been equally as bad defensively and that’s the Atlanta

Hawks they’ve been a 121.4 in the last 15 games and if we stretch this out to the last 20 it’s not great either so you know this is prior to the trade deadline too like we kind of had slipped on this before the deadline that our defense had just had kind of fallen

Off the map um it and then it’s gotten a little bit better recently but if you go take us back to you know January 1 or January 8th I mean this is when where if we go to January 6th which still when we’re winning like we that’s our hottest time

Of the year we win six in a row there I can take us back to January 6 I think it gets back to like the last 22 games in the season and the defense is is still not great like it’s still was not one of our our better stretches it it frankly

Just a little bit I think can give some justification to some of the moves were made the in that time period so this is the last if you take it um this is the last 23 24 games right so this is almost a month the best defense in the NBA during

That time period was is Cleveland and Minnesota to 107 and we’re the worst at 120.4 we’re positive our offense is so good in that time period we’re 11 and 11 in the last 22 games our defense is the worst in the NBA and our offense is actually so good that we’re po that

We’re we’re the number two offense in the NBA in that stretch now I’m not sure we’re still there with some of the trades but it’s so we’re we weren’t we have not been great in that well in that same time period as I said the last 15 games

Atlanta has been equally as bad defensively and they if we just go to the last 15 games Atlanta is the number is the number second worst defensive team in the NBA in that stretch and the and the second best offensive team in that stretch so if you go to the last like 22

Games we’re the worst defense and the second best offense and if you go to the last 15 games Atlanta is seven and eight 500 the worst second worst defense and the second best offense we could have 300 points scored tonight we could have have 310 points scored tonight between

These two teams now I’m not sure we have a pace that will get us there but that is the type of game we have right now now Trey Young’s not playing he’s out and we’ve gotten better defensively the last two and by definition Atlanta should probably be better without Trey young

Defensively if you look at their onoff numbers this year when Trey young is off the floor they’re defense is two points per 100 possessions better not that much their offense interestingly enough is actually worse when he’s on the floor and they’re worse when Trey Young’s on the

Floor which is kind of weird they’re great when bogdon bogdanovich is on the floor in a way that is super bizarre compared to everybody else on the on the roster um but they’re they’re actually less good when Trey Young’s on the floor or dejonte Murray’s on the floor they’re

Without Trey young tonight and so they a different team Murray takes it over cross over going to his right kind of time and time and time again um and that’s kind of who they are now a bunch of other guys feel like they have the green light we’ll see they they played

Very well and kind of blew out Orland late in the third one dejonte Murray uh went crazy in that game uh and so we’ll see but they are with Deon Murray on the floor and no Trey young they’re still not good defensively they’re a 119 but they’re good offensively and they’re

Plus 2.6 so we’ll see in some ways they might be a little bit better a conu hurt that’s been the key a little bit to who they are we’ll talk more about that um the Jazz have simplified their defense to try to get better we see Quinn Snyder

Sports channel on YouTube we also have locked in sports Minnesota Los Angeles Cleveland Dallas did I say Atlanta I think I said Atlanta Atlanta Minnesota Southern California Dallas Cleveland five so so if you’re local in any of those markets make sure you check out locked on Sports Atlanta they’re all on YouTube they’re

Also locked on sports today is now also on Amazon Fire TV uh tonight’s game Jazz and the Hawks 5:30 for your drive home so please join me and Ron it is also available on SiriusXM as all Hometown broadcasts are all right let’s get to the Jazz and the simplifying the defense

So the Jazz allow right now the Jazz allow uh a decent amount of Threes And teams are making a really really really high rate a little bit unnatural frankly Jazz are now 29th in the league in defending the three-point shot some of that could be that we’re allowing open threes but there’s usually

Not this kind of variance there’s you the league average is 37.3% and on defense the shooting discrepancy usually gets pretty slim like the best defense out there is Houston at 35 and you probably shouldn’t be a lot over 39 kind of two percentage points inside and it’s just kind of luck

Or not we’ve stretched over we’re now allowing 40% our opponent shots as threes and the corner three were allowing 44% which is Five Points better than League average we’re just getting a little unlucky there or not allowing or allowing the wrong guys to shoot I’m not sure I mean

We’re actually 30th in allowing the corner three 28th in allowing the non- corner three and 29th overall so it feels like one of two things when you kind of have every one of those numbers you say to yourself like oh is that really actually we’re unlucky or is that

The fact that we’re doing something to allow too many open shots probably a little bit of both uh but the 44% on Corner threes is crazy League average on Corner threes is almost 40% it’s 39.4 which is cray cray um I haven’t said that in so many years uh so we’ve got to

Get a little bit better defensively one of the things we’re trying to do is switch less stay home more guard your man more that does mean go going under more pick and rolls learning how to navigate screens a little differently and trying to figure out some of those

Kind of things we’ve seen a marketed Improvement the spur the Charlotte game was our first defensive game kind of at League average since the Milwaukee win and only our second game that was League average or better since January 25th so it had been a in a month we only

Had one defensive performance that was average or better our defensive performances for but going into the Charlotte game this was the Run we were on Fifth percentile 100 would be good zero would be bad fifth percentile third percentile 35th 11th 39th 61st that’s above average 12th 14th 3rd 33rd and

Then Washington was 75th New Orleans was 2 41st in Houston 16th in Oklahoma City only two since January 16th were above average the Spurs game was by far our best defensive performance in a long time and maybe our best defensive performance of the year in fact it was our uh it was

Our third best defensive performance of the Year best was against Dallas we won 127 to 90 and November 1st against Memphis third best defensive performance of the Year holding the Spurs to below a point of possession just fabulous um so we’re seeing now the Spurs are not particularly good

Offensively and Atlanta is even without Trey young they’re good they’re not um as we talked about with Deonte Murray uh on the floor but they’re not quite as good but they’re still good so what have we done well one thing we did that was different the other night is we forced

Turnovers we had not had an above average turnover forcing game since January 18th uh and we forced 18% of the Spurs possessions into turnovers we’d been below average in every single game uh in forcing turnovers and some of them horrifically low below 10% to a point which is really really hard to survive

Uh the other thing is we have we are were very good and have continued to be at not fouling and that’s kind of the yin and the Yang there of that you’re not fouling and then you’re also not forcing turnovers and how do you weigh those two pieces but some of this

Is also just simplifying what we’re doing defensively on the level of okay get through the screen yourself don’t switch it don’t get caught in constant rotation navigate the screen and go under the screen um if you if you have to and that is giving up off off the bounce threes

Frankly where offense is in the NBA right now giving up off the bounce threes is probably a good concept um it’s it’s probably okay there’s just very few players that can shoot an off the bounce three in the half court at a level that is equal to

League average um now the Jazz obviously are allowing as we just talked about are allowing a lot of a high level three so maybe that will change maybe that won’t but it does um that’s part part of it so watch the Jazz guys they’re staying they stayed engaged and then that cuts off

The paint they’ve done a much better job in the last two games of cutting off the paint making sure forcing guys not getting deep in the paint that makes all the Closeouts better and hopefully makes you better defens the other night what was actually most interesting is our best defensive

Guys on the floor were particularly two guys that have not been this case uh against the Spurs Keon’s defensive rating was an 86 and John Collins was 87 Taylor Hendricks was really good in his 26 minutes too is an 86 that is not usually where we are defensively frankly uh usually it’s

Walker Kesler who’s our best defensive player on the floor and John Collins has been our worst but in this game John Collins was really good so that’s kind of a maybe that’s a sign that if keante is getting through picks and we’re not getting caught on mismatches and we’re

Doing some things it’s better over the last 15 games we just don’t have anyone with good defensive numbers right like every sing single one of our guys defensive rating is a 120 or higher which is just it’s just not good um dun Lowry marke and Colin seon Keon are

Probably our best but like and Walker actually over the last 15 games is worse than John Collins um so it’s not if you’re listening to this you’re like well just play Walker more than John Collins that might have been true at one point but it hasn’t been so let’s keep

Watching this this is going to be much more difficult here we play tonight again without Trey young so it’s not quite the same thing a much better defense off offensive team Atlanta’s one of the elite offensive teams in the NBA they and Quinn obviously one of the best

Coaches they’re the ninth best offensive team in the league without Trey they’re still good they get a little weak without dejonte and Trey Orlando’s 23rd in the league offensively and Miami is really struggling a little bit offensively they’re 21st so if we can survive tonight the next two games are

Games that should be pretty good for the Jazz to continue to see if they can make this defensive progress um that they’ve made and I think that’s the first of the road trip tasks is can we see some more defensive progress from this team and what is that

Again that means guarding your man fighting through screens not getting caught in Perpetual switches cutting off the paint if teams continue to shoot 50% from three against us I just think you’re going to have to die with that there’s a little bit of luck going on there against us there’s obviously some

Level that um we probably can guard some of those a little bit better but there’s some kind of abnormal luck there’s very little consistency year toe in three-point defense and there’s usually a very small variance which is why people uh think about it as luck all right Quinn Snider and the Utah Jazz

Free and available on all podcasting apps I greatly appreciate it thank you so much tomorrow we’ll be in Orlando we’ll break down the game tonight we’ll continue with the road trip tasks all right Jase Quinn Snider tonight this should be uh a happy day I I’ll bet it’s

Incredibly Quinn I know Quinn well enough I’m sure he’s stressed uh massively I was texting with him last night and uh I didn’t get that Vibe we were just trying to figure out how we could say hi uh but I’m sure this is incredibly stressful for for Quinn in

Nine years and want to make sure it goes correctly in this and that a distraction from his task uh from the jazz fan standpoint it should be nine years of memories of a guy that really was a very important piece to the Utah Jazz uh coming out of the Jerry Sloan ER which

Was kind of in a quagmire with Tyrone Corbin at the helm and had Dennis Lindsay taking over for Kevin oconor we hadn’t really kind of hit a stride and it really needed an entire cultural reset did the Utah Jazz at that set in time and he Quinn and Dennis Lindsay

Combined to to do that with Quinn the Helm of the basketball team uh to culturally reset this franchise in a super important time that thrust us forward and allowed us to stay out of the kind of where Washington and Sac I mean think about Sacramento after Rick

Adelman left and it took 25 years um and so it’s you know we look back at jazz history we’ll talk about the Sloan great runs and we’ll talk about stock that even era of Quinn Snider coaching era getting us through out of you know from Trey Burke and Dante exom into

The next level and and getting George Hill and suddenly having a playoff team and while I think in a a lot of ways many people’s memories Trey man’s 3es and this kind of devastating uh heartbreaking kind of playoff losses and un filled playoff runs to be the signature

Of the era the fact is you know Quinn vaulted the Jazz back up into the top of people’s mind number one seeds wellth thought of franchise respected franchise and God us places we just hadn’t been in a little while and really could have been a long time away

If we did if he didn’t get it to where it was I think in retrospect they overachieved in the I think the preparation and detail and uh prepar and kind of uh maniacal uh approach had us overachieving in the regular season to two to three to five games every year

And so then when we got in the playoffs and got a team like the Clippers who suddenly kind of plugged in I think it was very very difficult for us and I think that was you know that’s the in when I look back on that era um yeah I

Think we were somewhat regular season teams because I think we took the regular season very seriously figured out particularly the postco during the co year there was no question quinnn and his staff kind of figured out how to prepare how to get ready while a lot of

Other teams just kind of were rolling it out not trying to fight not trying to get that done and and then we hit the playoffs everybody hit a different gear but to me those playoff losses which I think are obviously you know are hard are really it’s an era of like Quinn

Developing Gordon Hayward into a Bonafide star and then allowing Donovan to prosper and taking Rudy from a g-league player to to Hall of Famer and allowing the Jazz to have this prosperous run in an era where almost every other franchise almost every other franchise that’s ever had a run like the Jazz had

Under Jerry Sloan goes through an extended Quagmire of about a DEC and we went through like a year and to me that’s the signature of the Quinn SN Snider era in Utah is how important that transition was uh for the Jazz and really set the template for Ryan Smith

To take over the franchise and to um be able to thrust us forward as he is uh right now under Danny a Will Hardy and and this group and I think that’s the Legacy that to me is Quinn Snyder as the head coach uh of the Utah Jazz it’ll

Be fun to see him tonight weird to see him in his red glasses uh coaching on the other side all right quick League Trends over the last two weeks actually we do 10 days first and then we do two weeks so let’s quickly do 10 last 10

Games around the league and get a feeling of who’s kind of clicked in and who’s not Boston’s the number one offense in the NBA followed by Oklahoma City Atlanta Lakers Indiana Cleveland and golden state are the seventh best offenses we’re 10th teams that can’t score right now are Memphis Washington Charlotte Brooklyn San

Antonio so two of the teams we played well and played well defensively uh recently defensively teams that are playing well right now are Minnesota they’re much better than everyone else almost three points Miami Charlotte uh Cleveland Golden State and New Orleans are all defending very well right now worst defense in the league

Over the last 10 is Utah New York Atlanta 76ers Clippers interesting and Toronto overall net rating Boston Minnesota’s number one Boston’s number two Cleveland three Oklahoma City four Miami five Miami’s clicked in one eight of 10 and the Warriors who’ve also won eight of 10 teams are struggling the

Most recently are Washington Memphis Philadelphia without Joel embiid Brooklyn San Antonio and Portland more recent Trends over the last week or so uh shorter time period here the hottest offensive team in the league is Boston with a 135 over the last four games than Oklahoma City Toronto Indiana Miami and the Lakers

Uh Portland Brooklyn Philadelphia Charlotte Washington Memphis are having a hard time scoring best defensive team in the last short period of time is Charlotte just post trade deadline really playing well Minnesota Denver Miami and Oklahoma City teams that can’t defend recently Washington’s the worst New York Utah Clippers San Antonio and

Portland best team overall Boston Oklahoma City Denver Miami and Minnesota so teams are amping it up right now Portland Washington Brooklyn San Antonio Detroit and Houston have been Dreadful that is locked on Jazz today thanks so much for tuning in hope you’re having a wonderful day we now

Send first ever 24 s National Sports channel locked on sports today it’s also available on YouTube on Amazon Fire TV have a great one

  1. Locke the idea of asking most exciting thing going on in their life is awesome! I will for sure do this!

  2. To be totally honest here, the Jazz are tanking for the rest of the season…….. and in the process you lost half of your fan base by taking a team that was better than their record showed, as they were experimenting with their lineup rotations early in the year, and tossed it out the window for a couple less than meaningful draft picks and a bag of chips. WE were killing it against even the best teams in the league, and Ainge did…. another reset. Hope it all works out, but can I get a refund for my UtahJazz+ membership??? You guys are in the business of blowing smoke up our backsides. We already have what, 13 1st round picks, so get us someone that can actually play some basketball, as we have the draft capital.

  3. What do you mean postcast was audio only? I did watch it in youtube afterwards 🤔😅😂

Little tidbit to Lauris culture: Finns (while speaking Finnish at least) don't do the whole dance of "How are you" "Good, how about you". When we ask "how are you", we really want to hear something. One probably decides how deep conversation they want to have depending on how well they know the other person but at minimum they say something like "I'm enjoying the sunshine" or "I'm having a bit of a bad day" or if they are very avoidant, maybe "Same old, same old". But we never ask "how are you" if we don't want some kind of answer. We either stay quiet, just say hi or just talk something totally different.
