Podcast happy Thursday everybody and uh this was a uh this is the postgame podcast I could I could I should say man after a impressive I thought an impressive second half for Minnesota it was certainly an uneven game uh for stretches even into the third quarter this wolves Grizzlies game looked

Like it was just a a no-o for the wolves like they had nothing on the second night of a backtack and then ant showed up the bench continued what they were doing in the first half of this game to keep the wolves in it Minnesota ends up winning by nine relatively comfortably

Over the final few minutes of this game so it’s the postgame pod we’re going to break the whole thing down I’ve got a lot of things to talk about here today A big reminder here off the top to make lock on wolves your first listen every

Day and a big thank you for those you that do of course this show is freedom available everywhere that includes YouTube as well as all of your favorite audio platforms wherever you like to listen to podcast you can find lock on wolves you can also watch on the

Lockdown Sports Minnesota app on both Roku and Amazon Fire TV and you can follow on X and uh you can follow an xit both locked on t-wolves and also at B Beacon with two B’s 2 e cken all right lots to get to here and I

Want to start with um kind of how this game started from Minnesota what was so frustrating early in the game the Timberwolves obviously was very frustrated early they got down 14 nothing to start this game it was 10 nothing before Chris Finch called a timeout Target Center crowd of course

Doesn’t sit until the Wolves score so they’re standing for Two Plus minutes wolves call timeout they come out uh I think they turned it over immediately again after the timeout give up two more buckets it’s 14 nothing before Carlton towns hits a hits a a three from the

Left wing and uh the wolves from that point forward went on a bit of a run in the first quarter like a 20 I think it was like a 24 to1 run or something like that and ended up trailing by just two points at the end of the first quarter

But it was a I don’t know stagnant offense throughout the first half really and and the Wolves were out scored by two in the first one in the second down three at halftime stagnant offense was the number one culprit the defense wasn’t good and we’ll talk more about

That but it was much more about the stagnant offense than anything else and it was just made through three-pointers that kept Minnesota in it they ended up making 14 for the game and shooting 40% from three but in the first half it was Nas making threes C made a couple of

Early threes um that’s what kept the Wolves frankly in the game early on Memphis was winning in a lot of different areas they dominated the wolves in offensive well in rebounding overall and then in Second Chance points we’ll talk more about that later but it was a more glaring issue in the first

Half especially in the second quarter at the end of the second quarter too the Wolves had I think a six-point lead late second quarter and then Memphis went on a bit of a run just fueled by Second Chance points they had a putback they

Had a three then right at the end of the second quarter gobear tries to get a back tap for whatever reason I I’m sure thinking he could waste the rest of the time on the clock get the ball away from the rim but in that situation you just

Grab the ball right you’re not GNA you’re not on offense right it’s not a back tap on the offensive glass but he back tapped it directly into the hands of the Grizzlies I don’t remember who it was anymore but um made a tough three and was it zy Williams or was it Vince

Williams I don’t know I think it was one of the Williams hit a tough three at the end of the second quarter B at the halftime buzzer to put the Grizzlies up by three it was a tie game before that so it was a three-point Grizzlies lead

At halftime and then in the third quarter things almost the wheels fell off really for the Wolves the first half of the third quarter it was as bad as I remember the Wolves playing since I don’t know their last blowout loss they had at some point in I think January

Like it was and they were only down by I think 10 or 11 um see if I can pull up exactly what it was but it wasn’t like a massive deficit but when they got down double figures um it really felt like they weren’t G to come

Back I like it did uh let’s see it was 11 points I think was the most it ever got it was 7867 with four and a half minutes left in the third quarter then Nas got an and one McDaniel sits a tough layup um the Griz came back with a three-pointer

And then um a went on a bit of a run him not a bit of a run he scored seven straight himself he had a big dunk on a cut to the rim hit a tough three-pointer which was his only three-point make of the game and then he made another uh

Jumper after that and the Wolves were within two they continue to Surge to close the quarter by the end of the quarter the Wolves were up three again after trailing by 11 with about four and a half minutes left in the third quarter

It was it was a lot of it was ant 17 of his 34 points were in the third he went on a 70 run by by himself there as the Wolves were um surging well not quite ahead at that point but getting closer to surging ahead and then it was also Nas Reed

We’ll talk a lot more about the Wolves bench to me that was ant’s dominant second half was was probably the number one takeaway from this game number two though was another strong game from Alexander Walker and Nas Reed the two of them have been the last couple nights at

Least have saved the Wolves bacon uh multiple times and I want to get more into that but let’s let’s talk a little more about ant here um Jared Jackson Jr had a monster first half for Memphis he still ended up he had a really good game overall uh jiren Jackson ended up

Scoring 33 points on 23 shots he was three of 10 on three I think he I know he hit his first two three-point attempts he might have had all three in the first half but it it felt like he made a ton of shots early got to the

Line 10 times had 13 boards in this game three steals only a couple of turnovers and was kind of dominated early in this game uh no Kyle Anderson of course in this game who would have been somebody that could have potentially check jiren Jackson but he

Was Rudy was giving him space and he was hitting threes and then he was taking Rudy and towns off the dribble uh not the best Rudy game by the way we’ll talk more about that too but uh just a really strong first half from jiren Jackson so late when the

Wolves finally got that lead or when they were trying to get that lead fce just said you know what let’s just have Anthony Edwards like ant came to play today um McDaniels was in a little bit of foul trouble ant wasn’t let’s put ant on jiren Jackson Jr his Team USA

Teammate and see what happens I don’t think he scored with a guarding him ant shut him down a couple of times he was physical with him in the post got called for one foul that easily could have gone against Jen Jackson for an was trying to front Jackson in the post and Jackson

Tried to kind of pin him they called the fou on Ant um he also blocked his shot late in this game um altered another shot like incredible physical defense from Anthony Edwards just underscoring that he can literally do anything on the basketball court including guarding you

Know a a borderline All-Star big um on the perimeter guarding him in the post he he followed him everywhere he was truly guarding jiren Jackson Jr for stretches late in this game it was very impressive and then you add that to 34 points on 21 shots for

Ant he was only one of six on three-pointers he was 10 of 15 on two-point attempts was a perfect 11 for 11 at the line and it easily could have had another four to six free throws in this game I thought overall the officials were okay but ant ant was

Finishing through contact man like especially in the second half ant came to play on both ends of the floor it was a really impressive performance I want to focus in on the Wolves bench next um and talk about just how impressive that was also Finch’s rotations which I think

Were pretty interesting in this game especially when he opted to not play Rudy late and it worked out I just thought it was interesting both in the back court and in the front Court which what finch opted to do with his rotation so we’ll talk about all that here

Pels um I guess it’s nice to see unless the pels end up in the eight seed and end up playing the wolves in the first round I don’t really want to see them but anyway pick up Benedict Maan with the IND Indiana Pacers Josh Lloyd from locked on fantasy basketball is going to

Available on the free Fire TV channels app all right uh let’s talk bench the timber rolles bench was really impressive once again in this game and early it’s what kept the wolves in the game I talked about the three-point shooting a big chunk of that was Nas

Reed you don’t go have to go back very far to find a time when NZ Reed couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn from deep and by that I mean like two games ago remember how poorly he was shooting the ball coming out of the the All-Star

Break first two games out of the break a combined one of 11 from three-point range against the Bucks and the Nets Nas in over the last two games is now five of eight from three on uh Tuesday against the Spurs uncharacteristically he shot eight twos and only two threes

And I you know I thought it was good it was good that he was being aggressive off the dribble I also thought maybe he was trying to get a rhythm before he stepped back out sure enough against the Grizzlies on Wednesday he shot five twos and six threes which is a more normal

Nasre distribution he was passing the ball he was active um he followed up a 22-6 performance against the Spurs with 19-6 plus two assists and two blocks against the Grizzlies and remember cat didn’t play against the Spurs uh cat was on the floor for the Wolves relatively

Quiet for stretches in this one against the Grizz uh but Rudy was also played but was banged up with the ankle ended up only playing 27 minutes Nas was huge especially early in this game um and really in every facet he only had the two assist

But he was breaking down the defense and distributing the basketball he finished SE uh third on the team excuse me in rebounds in this game behind cat and Rudy he was um second in scoring on the team with 19 points on 11 shots played 26 minutes off the bench and again early

On that was super super important for nazri to be as good as he was he was also a team High plus 18 and plus minus um and I thought he was probably I mean outside of ant he was the best player on the floor for the Wolves certainly um

Very effective he was really good defensively too by the way uh following up a strong defensive game against the Spurs he had that tough left-handed block um against uh who is it against Um Zack Collins I think on the Spurs where he Collins backed him down spun to the

Baseline and Nas instead of Reaching Across and fouling use his left hand to block it out of bounds we’re starting to see and gradually Nas has become better and better defensively more mobile moves better laterally but now we’re throughout the this season it wasn’t like just this week but over the course

Of the season it’s clear that Nas not only is just better physically but he has a much better grasp of what he’s doing defensively he’s not just out there remember how poor his first couple years in the league how poor Nas was defensively and it almost seemed like he

Didn’t he never knew what pick and roll coverage they were in he didn’t know how to perform in pick and roll coverage he was terrible in drop he wasn’t laterally quick enough or agile enough to to show or to play high wall um and now he could

Do it all and he’s been genuinely great we talked about this on it was Tuesday’s show the defensive metrics are are very favorable for Nas Reed and all the Wolves lineups their best um fiveman lineup and their best defensive fiveman lineup is the Wolves starters minus C

Plus Nas I’m not saying Nas is a better player than Carl towns but he has been better pretty objectively speaking been better defensively than cat certainly for the last call it six weeks um cat I think has slipped a little defensively here of late um but overall The Season’s

Been pretty good Nas has been great like he really has been a two-way player this year for the Wolves I also want to shine some light on N Alexander Walker I think his performance is going to get lost a little bit because mostly because of ant but also because of Nas Alexander Walker

Was phenomenal in this game and we’re now talking this is the third straight postgame pod where I’ve talked about Nelle and the numbers aren’t exactly eye poppy he did score points and knocked down some threes in this game um actually only knocked down one three in this game but like going back to

Saturday against Brooklyn I know he was an 0 for from the field on Saturday he had zero points 0 of five from three he was 0 of five against the Spurs from three on Tuesday this dude has played such good defense over the last three

Games go back and watch him I mean I I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t want to go back and watch the Brooklyn game but if you want to go back and watch Nel’s defense in the Brooklyn game Minnesota only gave up 86 points this was like Brooklyn shot like nothing from the

Field in this game nil literally shot nothing from the field he was awesome defensively grabbed six rebounds in that game was was a contributing member to this 15-point Wolves win against Brooklyn against the Spurs on Tuesday it was a little of both he was awesome defensively the offense started to come

Around he was 05 from three again but he had six assists to only one turnover he did score eight points he was a bit more active and then in this game it all came together in the most to kill Alexander Walker way possible 12 points on five of

10 shooting five assists and four blocked shots for nikil Alexander Walker against the Grizzlies on Wednesday there was one possession he got cons he got two blocks in a row I think they were both on jiren Jackson Jr he stripped the ball then blocked him

After he got it back and went back up um an incredible defensive performance like seriously spend a couple possessions next game and just watch Alexander Walker and with the frenetic Pace that he gets after it we talked all offseason about how he’s one of the best in the

League at navigating screens the bball index numbers from last year basically the best two in the entire league where Jane McDaniels and N Alexander Walker at um at fighting through screens at at ball navigation ball screen navigation I think jayen actually was literally number one according to bball index and

Nil Alexander Walker was right up there and like it’s phenomenal to watch it really really is and on top of the 12 points on top of the defense um over the last two games he has 11 assists to one turnover Niki Alexander Walker has been so good you could argue that

Collectively over the last two games the Wolves best two players between Tuesday and Wednesday were nazri and Alexander Walker I’m serious I mean goar didn’t play well at all Wednesday we’ll talk a little bit more about that here in a minute cat didn’t play Tuesday ant was

Up and down Tuesday and certainly had a very strong second half on Wednesday so I guess a would be the the the the one argument against that but man have Nas no been really good and if they don’t play as well as they did in the first

Half of this game or contribute in the way they did in the third quarter when Minnesota surged ahead the Wolves don’t win this game they probably don’t beat the Spurs Tuesday either remember that was only a nine-point win also they won each of these games by nine nille and

Nas were huge the Wolves bench overall we should also talk about Monte Morris again not eye poppy numbers five5 and four shot just two of seven he hasn’t shot the ball well the last couple games but I thought he played really well Tuesday and defensively in this game

Too I mean Jaden struggled Jaden was good in this game but overall recently Jaden struggled a bit to stay in front of guys compared to what we saw earlier this year what we saw of last year Monte Morris no such issues Conley I think struggled a bit defensively here the

Last couple of games I mean it’s a long season Monte Morris looked fresh in this game um good defensively moving his feet staying in front of guys guarding the point of attack only committed one foul in 21 minutes had five five assists to no turnovers it was

A well-rounded Monte Morris game uh to be sure also I should me oh the other thing I wanted to mention was the rotation Jordan mcgoffin did see four minutes of run in this game as part of the rotation in the first half a dual point guard lineup with mlin and uh I

Believe mlin and Morris on the floor together and it worked out well uh mlin hit one of his two three-point attempts the second one was a heave at the end of the shot clock but he knocked down a catch and shoot three like he has been

He had a nice swing for an assist um strong stint for mlin so the two the two-point guard thing we saw a little bit of in this game not a ton the Big B rotation when Finch went away from Rudy goar late um and I’m sure it was a

Combination of him not playing Super well in the ankle just getting him a bit of a break and I think they’re certainly related because he just did not look himself rotation wise defensively uh he was not exactly nibble offensively either but there was a stretch in the fourth quarter where Finch went went

With Carl Towns at the five and ant when he was guarding jiren Jackson was effectively playing the four playing the four excuse me I believe that lineup was cat ant jayen who I would say was playing the three and Alexander Walker and then I believe it was either Morris

Or Conley at the point but you know you would normally look at you say Okay McDaniel is playing the three and ant’s playing or McDaniel is playing the four ant’s playing the three ant was playing the four I mean he was guarding jiren Jackson and you know was essentially the

Point forward with the ball in his hands on offense but um that was an interesting rotation choice for Finch and it worked out great um you know basically going small against a Memphis team that at this point yeah they can rebound the ball well on the offensive

Glass but this isn’t your Stephen Adams jiren Jackson Jr um you know uh it’s not that version of the Grizzlies this is this was a u I’m blinking on the other guy who they had Xavier Tillman like it’s not it’s not that massive Grizzlies team it’s jiren Jackson Jr and santiel

Dama who’s not a beast on the glass exactly like you can go small against them and the Wolves did and it worked uh worked really well all right let’s talk about studs and Duds here and then we’ll close this thing out today’s episode of lockdown wolves

This one not too hard to parse here obviously Anthony Edwards number one for me 34 and 11 of 21 just one of six from three but a perfect 11 of 11 from the free throw line and that is how you score 34 points on 21 shots with only

One made three ant also had four assists and two rebounds and a block he did have three turnovers he was so so in the first half he kind of force the issue a bit as as he does um a bit too much I would say in the first

Half but it helped a little when the offense was stagnant anyway well he you know he was obviously a big cause for the stagnant offense but he also because he’s so good offensively even when that’s the case he kind of shot them out of a little a little bit early um he hit

A tough shot right after cat scored the Wolves first bucket they were down 143 and hits a tough shot um he had one late after a after a timeout the Wolves I think were already up a couple possessions and were trying to pull away and they had a pin down where ant came

Off of it got the ball in the left wing and The Grizzlies were trying to force him left and ant is happy to go left and shoot a bank shot he got all the way basically to the low block it was like an eight 10 foot shot he jumped hung in

The air Grady had it on the call on the broadcast on Valley Sports North jordanes the way he hung in the air right before he hit the floor Banks it softly off the top left portion of the glass it was a beautiful shot and uh you

Know the one three he made was a tough shot he uh absorbed a ton of contact in the paint I think he had five dunks in the second half of this game it like it was really a take no prisoners I’m going to the rim every time which was crazy

Considering they just played 24 hours prior and he rolled his ankle badly before halftime of Tuesday’s game and he was questionable coming into this game sh was no worse for the wear he looked like he might have tweaked the left knee or something right before halftime doesn’t matter it’s it’s very Kevin

Garnett esque the way that he um bounces back from injuries it really it really is I don’t know how many times kg rolled his ankle and then just tightened his shoe and was back out on the floor that’s like a just keeps doing that stuff too uh really strong second half

From Anthony Edwards my second stud in this game’s got to be Nas Reed we talked about his game already 1962 and two two assists and two blocks six of 11 shooting four of six on three-pointers and a perfect three of three at the line uh he converted a three-point play in

This game and uh he did a 5 fouls 26 minutes he had a team team B plus 18 we talked about his defense well-rounded Nas Reed performance um even with both Rudy and Cat available Nas was really really good my third stud I could go N I could go Jaden you

Could R it probably be one of those two yeah would definitely be one of those two I’m going to go with na but then I want to talk about jadden but my third Stars Nik alander Walker who did already talk about as well 12 points five assists four blocks one Rebound in 24

Minutes five of 10 shooting one of three at the at uh Beyond The Arc and one of one at the line defensively phenomenal offensively um you know did what he needed to do was consistent was consistently himself and has been massive the last three games for the Wolves but let’s talk about Jaden

Quickly Jade McDaniels has not played well lately he’s been kind of out of it he was briefly benched the other night I think that was I think it was Saturday he was benched briefly um where Chris Finch just like there wasn’t the effort wasn’t there he just hasn’t been

Himself he looked like what we’re used to seeing in this game he had 12 points on five of seven shooting um was good in transition two of four on threes hit some Corner threes or hit a corner three in this game three assists three blocks two rebounds only one turnover in 34

Minutes a regular minute load for him was in a bit of file trouble early but did a good job staying out of it late um now it helps to not have a crazy difficult perimeter assignment right like no Desmond Bane in this game you know you know like obviously no job or

An uh so it helps that when he ended up not on jiren Jackson in the second half he was kind of able to to to float off of him and not have a really difficult defensive assignment but he was great off the off the ball defensively as well

Getting after loose balls diving on the floor um very few Ticky Tac foul calls for Jaden like he earned them they were fouls of aggression which is what you want to see all right Duds um quiet night from Conley but I thought he was fine I’m

Gonna go with Rudy goar Rudy just wasn’t quite himself and and I think we can blame the ankle injury for a good chunk of that he had eight points eight rebounds uh defensive rotations like he was far from the only one that struggled defensively cat did Conley did at times

I thought Jaden even did at times uh I mean the Wolves still ended up only giving up 101 points and 39% shooting for Memphis but you know it just like the first half and really the third quarter was not good it wasn’t until the fourth quarter where the Wolves were

Just even decent defensively Memphis just isn’t a very good offensive team at all um but I thought I thought Rudy wasn’t himself uh on either end but especially defensively so we give him a dud for this one by the way he had a minus 16 in

This game but game The Wolves won by nine they only had two players that had a negative plus minus Rudy was a minus 16 and Conley was a minus8 all right uh next up for the Wolves they have Friday or excuse me they have Thursday off before the Tim

Roles play host to the Sacramento Kings on Friday night we’ll previe that match up on Friday’s show among some other topics um of course still at Target Center the Wolves split the first two games of the season with Sacramento they lost to them at home in that inseason tournament game right around

Thanksgiving and then they beat them on the road right before Christmas and this is the third and final matchup between the two teams it would be nice to win this tiebreaker um you know Sacramento’s what nine games behind the wolves or eight and a half games behind the wolves

In the west but it’ still be nice to have it it’d be nice to improve the conference record as well and and also it’s um it’s a tough game like the Wolves obviously they lost to Milwaukee last week they beat three teams they were supposed to beat it wasn’t pretty a

Lot of the time but the net Spurs and Grizzlies Games The Wolves played well in now you get the Kings and the Clippers before you close the home stale with the Blazers on the second night of a back toback so it only gets tougher from here before a really difficult ult

Road trip that includes a Pacers Cavs road back to back so lots of tough games coming up it’d be good to get this one against Sacramento on Friday all right that’s all we have for today here on the show a big thank you for making lockdown wolves your first listen every single

  1. If Ant gets a semi-friendly whistle like last night, with 11-11 FT's, on a regular basis, he will be scoring 30 PPG, no problem.

  2. most impressive part of this game was Ant locking down a guy 6+ inches taller than him, and clearly asking for the assignment. We are gonna be a tough out in the playoffs
