Jalen Johnson returns, Atlanta Hawks narrowly succumb to Utah Jazz for third straight loss

On today’s show the Atlanta Hawks had a shot in the air in the final seconds in Utah but unfortunately it did not go in and the Hawks suffered their third straight loss we’ll get into all of what transpired between the Hawks and the Jazz we’ll get into all that right

Now you are locked on Hawks your daily Atlanta Hawks podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every Day Hello friends welcome to episode 1675 Lon Hawks podcast I am your host Brad Roland coming to you on a Friday evening deep into the night here going into Saturday and Today’s Show will break down what became a narrow loss for the Hawks in Salt Lake City but before we

Busy week on the show this is episode five in the last 5 days or so if you missed anything earlier in the week I encourage you to listen to that as well as you know NBA draft stuff game breakdowns news reactions Etc it’s all here in one place for you and you know

This is a close loss to the Hawks their third straight defeat um second game is this long five game West Coast trip bunch of late nights and some tough sledding for the Hawks also Quin Quin Sider returns to Utah the first game uh since he left the Jazz as being the head

Coach not just his not just him either just all the assistants that he had in Utah came back lots of emotions I’m sure for all those guys also jayen Johnson on the bright side came back from his ankle injury in this game had some nice flashes good good to see Jay on the

Floor after just three games out of the out of action given the ankle and how bad it looked that’s a great result but you know to the game itself the Hawks were down by 11 in the first half came all the way back led by one at the

Halftime break it was closer most the second half they actually were down 10 though about six minutes to go and then made a pretty Valiant comeback effort dama stretch had a shot in the air from C that would have won the game in the final seconds did not go in but um

Certainly a close spot game and honestly that was kind of what was expected or projected in this game so Utah’s not great but given where the Hawks are right now that’s kind of just the reality of the situation with their available personnel and our friends at FanDuel actually made the Hawks a

One-point favorite in this game on the road and Salt Lake City is tough place to play that jazz always has been pretty good at home even when they’re not very good overall they’re pretty good at home but and there were again it feels like every game right now for the last couple

Weeks it’s been a huge injury storyline on both sides not just the Hawks but their opponents most of the time have been really banged up and that happened again in this one so on the bright side Jaylen did come back missed three games that was the headliner on the positive

Direction but bonovich ends up missing this game with illness he was sick on Wednesday as well ended up playing through that but did not play pretty well in that game also the Hawks have all year long I’ve said this a lot but just to put a number on it the Hawks

Have been really bad with bogie off the floor whether he’s in the game available or not they had coming into the night had a minus 8.7 net rating without bogey this year that’s really bad and he has the biggest plus minus sort of swing in his Direction on the roster but

Fortunately I would say he’s only missed three games this year including tonight so that’s a positive but he was not available in this game by the way a non this game focused update Mohamad gay the hawk second round pick from this last year has a right elbow injury that he

Suffered on Tuesday in College Park at an MRI and that revealed a a UCL sprain in that elbow that’s a shooting arm so that’s a little bit more concerning he’s actually already back in Atlanta to begin rehab and he’ll be reevaluated not return reevaluated in seven seven to 10

Days unfortunate as gay has just come back with from the back issue that that cost him several months so um if you’re wondering if M was gonna come back to the big Le Club anytime soon he’ll be out for a little while longer with a new

Injury unrelated to his back um on the other side Utah was without Loren marinin who other than Trey young is the best player on these two teams in fact those with clearly the top two players in my mind on these two teams and they were not available in this one also no

Jordan Clarkson no Chris Dunn two rotation guys for utas they were down to some pretty um off the radar names off their bench in this game so again the hawksw you basically I’ll say it was this it it was a cliff up game coming in

And hon with the way it played out that was kind of the what had happened like if the Hawks had won this game close it would have felt pretty okay if the Jazz won this game close it would have felt pretty pretty indicative what transpired

So um I kind of get it it was a close game it was not always well played but it was also interesting it was competitive and I’ll get into kind of my takeaways now and it ended up with a pretty good offensive output for the Hawks in this game but almost entirely

Because they shot the heck out of the ball from three in this one they had about a 120 offensive rating which is actually their second best Mark in like the last three or four weeks so that’s a very good output and if you just if you

Just stop there and say did the hwks score enough to win this game the answer is a resounding yes they they did more than on a per possession basis just simp putting the ball in the basket they did more than I would have expected in this game but it was basically three-point

Shooting and nothing else or very little else they were actually Dreadful inside the arc they shot 39.6% on twos in the game for reference a bad two-point shooting team shoots 50% or so from two so that’s really really brutal um by the way combined the two best players for

The Hawks in this game coming in you would say were Murray and Jaylen Johnson Deonte was five of 13 on twos and Jaylen was four of 15 on twos so that alone that’s pretty rough sledding on the other side the Hawks were unseasonably hot from three they were 20 of 39 from

Three that is uh if you do the math quickly there it’s 51.3% that is of course red hot scorching they tie their season high with 23s in this game and three guys that were I would say are supporting players one of them is more prominent than the others but de R Hunter Garrison

Matthews and West Matthews combined to shoot 11 of 14 from three obviously you can’t Bank on that happening but it’s nice when it happens um unfortunately though it was the reason why they were able to stay in the game rather than the reason they were able able to kind of

Pull away in this game because they were so bad inside the arc they also missed seven free throws in this one although they were better in the second half they did one good thing other than three-point shooting was good ball security only nine turnovers in this

Game but they did lead directly to 18 points so essentially they were damaging turnovers when they actually happened um they have 32 assists that’s actually really good um generally assist numbers go up if you look around the league and sort of the trends when teams make a lot

Of Threes because usually usually most of your threes are assisted threes and that was the case for the Hawks in this game but still 32 assists not turn is great um they were blow average on the offensive glass but three guys on the roster tonight had 26 points or more

That is of course Hunter Murray and Jaylen Johnson and if you told me coming into the game that the Hawks were gonna have three guys score 26 or more and then also shoot 20 of 39 from three you know I would say the Hawks should be like an 85 90% favorite to win

The game if that’s all knew just bank that in um Unfortunately they were just so bad inside the arc and then defensively it wasn’t the best either so we’ll go that that in the floor now even with the c again about the hot shooting the Hawks did score at a good level but

Defensively they didn’t really just didn’t hold up in this game a 123 defensive rating uh Utah is about League average offensively for the full season but of course that includes Lori marinan who is their best offensive player by a pretty wide margin so um not great to

Kind of give up that kind of performance to the Jazz and it was really across the board they were really good from two like 60 60% or so 39% from three they had 24 pass break points that’s actually a lot of course I will say this the

Hawks are hawks did a pretty poor job on the defensive glass in the first half it did get much much much better after halftime but Utah is Elite there so I think actually they did as good or better than you would expect and defensive rebounding in this game

Against sort of against the H of the Jazz operate but on the other side of that the Jazz coming into the night actually had the worst turnover rate in the whole league they they are not good in ball security other than one stretch where they could k kick the ball around

A little bit the Jazz only had 13 thrs in this game and that’s an average number it’s fine but you would like to see a little bit more than that from the defense um they did they did have sort of a random supporting player on Fire game from Johnny juing former UCLA

Standout Off the Bench that definitely hurt the Hawks but also Colin ston K George got to their spots most of the night John Collins had 18 points on 10 shots so it wasn’t like they you know nobody budging them individually necessarily other than a couple big shots down the stretch but the Hawks

Just couldn’t quite get enough stops along the way so look big picture I’ve been saying this a lot and it’s not meant to dismiss anything but the personel challenges are real for the Hawks right now it’s not an excuse it’s just the reality even today you get Jay

Johnson back that’s huge but then you give you you don’t have bogy and you know Jaylen is better than bogie but bogie is very valuable to this team so um I’m looking forward to hopefully analyzing a game on Sunday that actually has bogie and Jaylen and looks a little

Bit more like normal for the Hawks still not gonna be anything close to normal without Trey and Ana and sadique for the rest of the season all that stuff but you know Personnel challenges are real and even against say a shaky team in Utah tonight the Hawks losing close was

Kind of a reasonable outcome I think this is basically a game that could have gone either way and unfortunately there was one shot in the air and it’s not it’s never about one shot as we’ll get into a little bit later but um it didn’t

Go in and the Hawks lose as a result so with this loss the Hawks now fall to 29 and 37 on the season no one wanted to be there of course coming in but and they also have only a three game lead over the Nets at this very moment and the

Nets have tiebreaker so it’s really only a two game lead we get into that more later on but before we get to all that stuff and big picture and small picture my observations at the end of the podcast my player notes on all the guys who took the floor in this game we’ll

With Alper andon Ona miss the rest of the season Josh is expecting Lando to play a lot more and obviously just more usage means more fantasy production he’s play at least 25 minutes in a couple games in a row for the rockets and uh not a player that should have huge

Expectations necessarily but if you knew he was gonna play that much on a consistent basis he’s the kind of guy that’s worth adding keep an eye on on the stretch of the Season also by the way Josh noted that Deon Ray Hunter is a player to add if he’s still available in

Your leagues and I would agree with that wholeheartedly because Hunter is in line for a lot of playing time a lot of shots with Bay out and all that fun stuff so Josh Lloyd again from last fantasy basketball is help you out with your team all year long F championship in the

Then they came back with a vengeance with a run of their own a 12-2 run to take the lead early in the game did the Hawks all 12 points came on three-pointers for Atlanta including three threes from West Matthews crazy stat here number one was his season high

This year with seven points coming in he hasn’t played that much this year obviously more of a you know veteran presence kind of leader guy but he scored 90 sorry he scored nine points in about 90 seconds so he had a season high like three minutes into the game it was

Actually hilarious you don’t often see that kind of stuff uh in mid-march um there was a little bit of rust early from Jaylen Johnson who missed his first four shots um had a couple nice finishes along the way in this game but as I said

Before uh Jaylen was 415 on two just not quite his normal finishing still was still was really productive because he had he hit four3 got to the line 10 times but not his usual touch and I’m sure that’ll come back he only miss three games so there’s that defensively

Though was a little bit Rocky early on old pal John Collins had 11 in the first 18 or so for Utah after he had a really bad game the first time he played the Hawks um help the Hawks though were red hot as they wore the whole game from

Three Garrison Matthews had one that actually bounced hugely off the rim off the top of the backboard and then went actually went in that was a good microcosm of the night actually from a hawks three-point shooting he was actually laughing about that pretty clearly but there’s that um Utah’s bench

Was really I mentioned before quickly but guys that you would not expect to be prominent NBA contributors Johnny juang Micah Potter Jason Preston um were involved in this one for Utah who’s they’re super banged up of course at this point in time um they were down six

For the Hawks at the end of the first quarter despite H six threes and got the big flourish from West Matthews as well but as I mentioned before also Utah had six offensive rebounds in the first quarter and 10 second chance points so from that point forward the Hawks were

Pretty good on the glass it was that the first quarter they got beat up a little bit um there was one big run by Atlanta in the middle of second quarter actually to take an 11-point deficit and tie the game capella had a huge sequence actually had a huge Block on Walker

Kessler and then had a nice finish on a lob dunk from Jay Johnson um they still red hot from three Murray hit one Garrison hit two in a row they were shooting 55% from three through about the first quarter and a half Hunter got rocked on a drive um actually that he

Made a three-point play on but and he actually stayed on a little bit I’m not sure if he got the one KN him or what happened there but he was able to stay in and looked to be fine uh he had a good game in this one all the way around

The Hawks actually were up by five so they were actually down 11 and up by five in the same quarter and then only up by one at halftime although Jay and Johnson made back toback threes that were much much needed late the quarter um Five Guys with eight points or more

In the first half they were really really good from three three turnovers in the whole half that was obviously pretty big and then defensively it wasn’t great but Utah’s three-point shooting did lag behind the Hawks as it did the whole game uh after halftime Jaylen was having some trouble at the

Free throw line as well he did have the first seven points of the half for the Hawks in the second half and this is a weird one he played 20 minutes in the first half and that honestly shocked me you know it’s an ankle injury he only

Missed three games I wasn’t EXP him to have a huge restriction but normally the Hawks like to have guys be a little bit restricted with their minutes the first game after missing multiple games especially with a lower body injury where you can’t really run um and then

Jay played 20 minutes in the first half which was like weirdly high and then in the third quarter he played four minutes so I was joking or not joking I’m not I’m not sure I’m not reporting this but it felt like almost like someone in the training staff was like Hey Quinn maybe

No play him 20 minutes in the second half um he ended up playing 34 so it wasn’t like they held him out a ton but it interesting the way that kind of broke down um the Hawks though missed seven of their first 18 free throw attempts they actually made their last

Nine in a row which made their numbers look better but they were really struggling at the line for a large portion of this game it was really close in the third quarter it was pretty choppy both teams led by three points or less the entire first like seven minutes

Of the quarter the Hawks were actually down eight though by the end of the quarter at one point Hunter was red hot though he had a couple of jump shots that were crazy difficult a couple more threes as well he had 25 points in the first three quarters monster stuff there

From DeAndre and the Hawks were down by two this the numbers actually got a little bit better from there but they were at one point 16 of 30 on threes and 16 of 40 on Duce um they had some moments in the fourth quarter where it

Was pretty uneven so lots of runs um they they allowed a four-point play Early in the fourth quarter after a touch foul it was a bad foul by Garis Matthews aw down by nine early in the fourth and then they R off a 70 run that

Ended with the Hawks having a three from Jaylen off Steel by Deonte they actually tied jaylen’s career high with four threes but then after that it was an 80 run by the Jazz including three three three buckets in a row Jay missed a couple shots and Dej had a bad turnover

And in an instant the Hawks were down by 10 points with about six and a half minutes to go and I even wrote in my notes at that moment the a basically had to be great from this point forward to win this game and they were good from

That point forward they made they made the requisite plays to get back into the game so down 10 they got four straight defensive stops which was huge now they couldn’t quite take advantage of it because they only scored twice on those four times so they did a good job on

Offense but not a great job and they were down by six or so with like two and a half minutes to go and then they allowed a bucket at The Rim to go down by eight but then that point forward Murray got hot so Deonte hit back toback

Threes to go from down eight to down two in like 40 seconds it was very fast and then they got a stop from seon Murray then had two shots on the second possession in between offensive rebound for the lead both times two threes he missed them both that time so he’s two

Four overall in that stretch still obviously really good but um there was a deflection out of bounds with 16 16 seconds to go on the next possession and the timeout up by two so the Hawks down two without the ball but they didn’t have the foul because the shot clock was

Only half or so of the game clock capella actually did a great job I thought in isolation coming out of that timeout against kante George on the wing forced a bad Miss and it was a shot violation actually because it was it was that bad it didn’t draw any iron at all

There was a review actually that gave the Hawks kind of a long time out because it was close enough to the rim where they had to at least check it um but then coming out of that obviously if you watch the play you will know but if

You missed the game it was obviously late at night um basically what I would say is the Hawks made the right play and it didn’t go down so Utah will hardy obviously knows Quinn uh Quinn and his return all that stuff they kind of joked about that seemed like after the game

Utah was very intentional and this is probably the right move in a lot of ways they were not let Deon take the shot they ran a double team at dejon 33 feet from the rim like Deon smartly didn’t try to score over two guys so he passes

It up as he should have um he made the right play he found V for a pretty good look like he was open on the left wing for a game-winning three point attempt and he just missed it now couple things here I thought V gave them good minutes

In the game I don’t think I would have had him on the court in that spot and that’s not indictment of beat who actually I think has come a long way to offensively good playmaker but um offensively as a scorer and as a shooter he’s doesn’t he’s not the guy you want

Out there I don’t think at that moment in time down by two it’d be different with more time because they like his defense and I think it’s reasonable to have him on the floor in crunch time but that’s an offense only possession at that point in time so I would not have

Had him on the court of course it was more magnified because of what happened and that he a took the shot and be that it was a three and he’s not he’s not a good three-point shooter so that’s kind of tough and you have Garrison mat over

There as an option or even West Matthews but probably Garrison Matthews is just a more established shooter right now I would have had Garrison out there teams do not help off Garrison Matthews generally speaking because he’s a respected shooter he’s a bigger offensive threat than V in that spot um

The only thing I even think of is that V had been playing Crush time anyway so they kind of just stuck with him rather than like they didn’t just actively put V in the game for that play he was already on the floor but Garrison had

Played like till the five minute Mark so it wasn’t like he was ice cold either I didn’t love that again it’s a decent look from an NBA player who could make the shot it didn’t go in and you know process-wise it was the right pass by De

Jonte just an it was a good look I think V makes that shot 35% of the time 40% of the time like it’s an open shot you know they’re not all created they’re not all created equal he shoots worse than that but on an open Catch and shoot it’s not

A bad look and also you’re on the west coast trip I don’t think they want to go to overtime honestly like there’s a school of thought that you just go to the rim and try to go try to go overtime but on the road you’re short-handed

You got a back toback in LA on Sunday and Monday I think Quinn probably all things equal would say let’s take the shot here if we win it sorry if if we hit it we win we get to we get to go and leave and if we miss it we lose and it

Is what it is so I had no issue with I had no issue with it at all as far as what happened my only quibble was that I wouldn’t have beaten the game but I will say if it’s Garrison they may not have left Garrison open so it would have

Changed things entirely and we’ll never know but that’s all I would say also last thing on this jayen Johnson I thought it was a good look by him to go right up to V at the end of the game picked him up encouraged him after the

Miss stuff happens and I thought it was a good moment from jayen who’s still a young guy in his own right like he and V have been around each other for the last two years but I thought that was a good moment just a little B of the window

Like people people really like jayen Johnson Al I should plug this my friend Jake fiser of Yahoo’s been on this podcast before good actual friend of mine uh wrote extensively about Jay a deep dive profile on Joe that went up in yahoo this week if you missed that I’d

Encourage you to read that and it was kind of a good way to plug that piece but anyway um in the end it’s a close loss of a game that was probably supposed to be close the way this all this way this all played out strength

Weaknesses we kind of went over all of them but we’ll leave it there for now and in a second I’ll talk about the player-by-player evaluation kind of notes stuff that I have but first and work from our sponsors on the podcast Today’s Show is brought to you

One more time the place to go is stitchfix.com lockon all right into the player stuff in this game only 10 guys were active for Atlanta um nine of them played Dylan Windler did not he was probably the 10th guy you know he definitely was 10 guy on

Wednesday he didn’t play in this one no surprise there Trent Forest play 19 minutes that’s more than he’s been playing recently there were some minutes with Trent and de on the court TR took one shot had four assists though two rebounds play decent defense I thought

He was fine Off the Bench not obviously prolific but did his job Bruno was quiet in this one I thought actually two points five rebounds they have two Steals and two assists but not a ton of impact I thought he was okay Off the Bench Garrison at three threes they were

All big shots at four assists a little bit shaky defensively couple bad fouls I thought by Garrison in this game but generally did his job he was minus 11 though that was a game worst for the Hawks and uh you know I’m not sure that was like totally earned but he didn’t

Play that well just did but he did shoot well which is helpful uh DeAndre Hunter man he’s been good uh tonight he had 27 points in 32 minutes he was five of 10 on twos and five of seven on threes um I’ll just say this now over the last

Five and a half weeks six weeks something like that 16 games hunter is playing extremely well it’s not all about shooting but it obviously helps he’s averaging 17 and a half points per game on 50% from the field and 45.7% from three in about 28 minutes per

Game I’m not sure if this controversial or not to be honest with you but it’s just what what my eyes see what the stats say all that stuff I think this is the best he’s ever played now there’s an argument for one stretch in 2021 early

In the year before he got hurt I get all that that was that’ be the other option but I think Hunter is playing the best basketball of his career right now and obviously he’s not going to shoot 46% from three long term but he’s just playing really well so want to shout him

Out he was really good in this game a little bit less in the fourth quarter but he was really productive and uh H the most impactful bench guy and was plus four in the game so Off the Bench um to the starters West Matthews crazy

Start to the game he had nine points in a short period of time ended up with 13 the last time that West Matthews scored more than 11 points in a game was December 22nd of 2021 so almost two and a half years ago that’s a crazy long time so season High

Twoyear high for West Matthews he was fine I wasn’t like he did a ton after that but um you know throw that in there to the stuff that was unexpected he him going three three three in this game uh a nice little boost and he started this

Game alongside V on the wings speaking v c obviously missed shot at the end two points two assists um oh sorry over over for three from three one of two on twos two assists one steel four fouls what plus five in the game I thought he could he play played good defense actually

Something that Kevin schard shouted out that like his progression defensively you know the work in College Park got a lot of attention I think deserved about kbby buffkin V is a success story on defense in particular from College Park now offensively still flawed guy doesn’t shoot the ball that well but a good

Passer good ball handler and if he can defend he’s an NBA player and I think he’s defending right now so that’s a good sign for the future but he was fine obviously it’s not a great spot to have to start beat CI and West Matthews on the wings that’s goes without saying I

Think but that’s where they are uh jayen Johnson obviously came back in this game that was the most important thing he was not good from two 415 from two but did four8 from three to tie a career high uh five assists five rebounds to have three turnovers that was totally fine 26

Points he looked fine to me a little bit Rusty early on but certainly it’s huge to have him back he checks so many boxes I think he unlocks the team on offense and defense especially right now without Trey um defensively he’s the one guy on the team that’s like his blend of

Rebounding and length uh that’s obviously very helpful and just burst in General on offense he’s another guy that can actually get all the way to the rim right now the Hawks haven’t really had that guy Deon does a decent job sometimes with that but Jaylen gets all

The way there with physicality and uh just unlocks a lot of stuff so hopefully they’ll have bogey back and they’ll look more like their old self uh on Sunday um to Capella I thought he’s pretty good in this game 10 points 15 rebounds to lead the entire in fact Clinton was yeah

Clinton was comfortably the best rebound of the game four assists two blocks couple of big ones um 10 points like look good to me couple of typical uh capella mishaps around around the rim but I thought he played well rebounding wise defensively block shots yeah look

Good and then Deonte kind of a slow Star as a score in this game I picked it up late 33 points nine assists seven rebounds uh not super efficient in this one it was five of 13 on twos five 14 on threes but get they get to the line nine

Times which is very very helpful and I’m I’m still a fan of Deon taking more threes than he has 431 attemps is really good now he didn’t shoot great but he shot totally fine 36% from three on huge volume so that really helps your efficien

You can afford to miss more shots if you take more threes that’s just the reality of it so I thought he played under control offensively um a lot of the way and then when they needed him to in the fourth quarter they ramped it up that’s probably a good model in general for

Right now without Trey is just like take it easy distribute a little bit and then when they need him to score he went out and scored he hit those two big threes late that kind of got the Hawks really back into the game so uh 39 minutes he’s

Playing a lot of minutes right now I think that all parties involved should probably take down a little bit with his minutes right now it’s just too many not not because he’s not worth it but because just durability wise it’s like really hard to play 40 minutes a night

For a long stretch of time but I thought he’s he’s obviously been carrying a a very large workload right now with Trey out and that’s the reality it’s just kind of what you have to do but it’s worth noting nonetheless um that’s all I have on this game from here the Hawks

Travel on Saturday and then they play a back-to-back in La so on Sunday they play the Clippers tough game there and then they play the Lakers on Monday both of those are obviously difficult in terms of matchups compared to the Blazers and the Jazz um we don’t know

What Clippers are going to be like healthwise but right now on paper I think Russ is out they’re much healthier and much better than Portland and Utah La same thing obviously pending ad and LeBron status they’re very important players but I would say the Hawks will be probably significant underdogs in

Those games if they can get one that’d be a really good result um a sweep would be even better obviously but I think going one and one in La would be awesome uh G given what they have available right now again hopefully they have bogie back but um no reason to believe

That they would have a Kong back Trey not going to be back buffkin at least on this on this trip so uh keep that in mind that’s where we are right now so that’s all I have for today we’ll have more later on come again two more
