[Grange] He’s (Gary Trent Jr.) a free agent at the end of the season and at this point, there would have to be an explanation for why the Raptors didn’t bring him back.

He’s too expensive and not consistent. Boston is paying Sam Hauser 2 million bucks a he provides most of what Gary does. Why would we pay Gary like 20 million? It’s not smart management
vaalbarag
Someone else offering him more money than what the Raptors are comfortable paying him would be a good enough explanation for me.
YouDontJump
It all depends on the price and whether he wants to continue in the role he’s been given or wants to hopefully seek out a bigger role elsewhere.
Iliketothrowaway2456
Too expensive, inconsistent, we drafted his replacement. A contender is likely going to take a voucher on him cause he’s improved a little towards the end of the year.
I was terrified when they said he was going to resign on a “Lucrative” contract and was glad we didn’t. But of we sign him to something like Poeltl’s contract, I’ll be pissed lol
purpl3r3dpod
100% re-sign the guy. Plantar is hell, but you can tell Gary has some of his bounce back. I think whichever team he plays on next season will be potentially his best season ever. Guy still hasn’t reached his prime and his game is rounding out well, showing more passing and a return to disciplined poa defense. Shooters love to have other good shooters around them to hard shift the defence and get each other better shots. Every line-up with Gary and Gradey together has been deadly in showing the potential of that when the ball swings. We should be stocking up on good shooters to put around Scottie, not saying dumb things like ‘oh we have a shooter already who needs a 2nd?’ His salary will not be that much of the cap, and will likely look like a steal of a contract once other shooters re-up in 2025-26.

IF our pick conveys this season, then I think they should be up to sign and trading both Gary and brown and taking on some bad contracts.
If it doesn’t convey it’s a little bit tougher of a decision not having our pick. Although at this point I have no idea what a sign and trade would even look for either of them.

4 for 60 get it done?

He has a good game and the talk is to bring him back. He has a bad game and the talk is Gradey should be starting over him.
Lol

I have no issue bringing him back on decent terms but to date, he hasn’t shown the ability to be anything other than a microwave scorer.
When he’s on, he’s ON. Otherwise, it’s not good. If he can’t be productive when he isn’t lighting it up, we can move on. There are cheaper microwave scorers in the league.
Winter_Purpose8695
I mean what does this even mean, its either the Raps don’t want to retain him or he choses another offer. What more of a explanation do you need Grange?
peroper7
There’s no replacement for him next season, letting him walk is pointless and the team won’t be any better for it
century69420
I don’t know what Grange is going on about tbh. If someone wants to overpay him then you let him walk I think it’s pretty simple. Gary isn’t a player who contributes meaningfully to team-winning basketball. He’s an okay shooter, bad passer, bad rebounder, and not a great defender. You can pick up a guy or two off the scrap heap or pick a 4-year college player and see if they can provide 80% of his production at 10% of the cost. With some big contracts coming up down the pipe I don’t think Gary is some must keep player, and frankly, don’t really think any team would have traded anything of value for him at the deadline.
DocHolliday9930
We won’t sign Gary for one reason: consistency. Shire he went off against the Magic. He also had a few other good games sprinkled throughout the season. The problem is, every time he has a good game, he goes 2-15 over his next 3. We can find the same skill set for much less money.

We need a starting sg; the only sgs available this off season that are worth discussing about to replace GTJ are probably Monk and Beasley. Can we even get any of these guys? GTJ is more likely to re-sign with us IMO.
Traditional-Owl-9768
Norm would’ve been a nice young vet for our new guys
Dangerous-Thing3910
There would be an explanation anyways. Just because he’s had a few good games doesn’t mean he fits with the team long term.
k_jones
You bring him back so you have the salary and asset. This team will be over the cap so not paying him doesn’t allow you to bring similar value back in his place.
Only reason you don’t re-sign him is if the cost pushes into the territory where he has too high a probability of being a negative value.
MDS_1996
Inconsistency and an inability to regularly contribute any other way aside from shooting, also price.
ContributionOld2338
More than that, why waste so many minutes on him with so many of the young guys seeing the bench
Cheechers23
I still stand by you offer him 3/45m maximum. Maybe a fourth year but no more. If he finds a better offer, let him go.

One of the more controversial players in recent memory for sure
I personally like him and think he should stay

I like Gary because he can straight up carry when he’s on a heater, and that could be valuable in a playoff series. I also respect the hell out of his professionalism. I’ve never heard a negative word come out of the man’s mouth.
However, he hasn’t developed at all though, which is fine because he’s still a solid enough player. I really don’t wanna pay too much for what he brings to the table. I’d be ecstatic to bring him back at fair market value, whatever that is.
jamiecballer
He’s cock blocking Agbajis path to meaningful mins. I feel quite certain they are going to give him a very concrete offseason plan and expect to see what he can do next year. That’s your reason.

Getting good young players on team friendly rookie contracts is your best bet to a good future. Hope we get blessed by the basketball gods. We draft someone good. Hopefully the Rookies and young guys develop into highly productive players. Not asking for all stars. But imagine 5 super solid starters and just good depth.
_Gourmand
The Raptors have constructed this roster in a strange way in my opinion. I like the idea of bringing Gary back, but then that means he’s going to be taking minutes away from younger guys. We’re in this weird middle ground territory that I thought the Raptors would get out of but some of the decisions this year have been a little weird. In my opinion you have to go heavier into development at this point. Is Gary good with coming off the bench? Is the Raptors roster good with RJ Barrett at the 3 and Scottie at the 4?
forustree
Is there data to support theory that Trent statistics are better the more meaningless the games?
cad_internet
In theory, a guy with GTJ’s skillset and consistency should be a bench player.
When he’s hot, you let him shoot and he’s going to help you win. And when he’s not, you keep him on the bench because he’s not going to give you much else.
In reality, he’s horrible off the bench and he’s not a starting quality SG.
Personally, I don’t like his game, but I recognize that his prime skill, shooting, is something the team sorely lacks. I’m ambivalent about bringing him back. If the price is right, ok, sure. But if it’s a bad contract, I’d be inclined to move on.
