The two stars like always mhm very opposite games for these two guys even though they combined two of 16 from three no they couldn’t hit a three at all and so uh you other guys had to hit threes in this one but Kyrie Irving 13 of 21 28 points

Seven boards three assists only one turnover 10 points in the fourth quarter they needed that desperately and Kyrie plays 38 minutes in the middle of Ramadan by the way which we haven’t mentioned he’s fasting during the day and that’s they flying out a chef to to get him the exact meals

That he needs right after the the game and all that Brian deeris reported that on the broadcast like they’re he’s he’s doing something that we that is incredibly impressive Kyrie Irving and he did it when the Mavericks desperately needed it when Luka had his worst literally his worst shooting game of his

Career yeah no I mean 10 points in the fourth quarter it felt like he had the first like eight and time where it honestly felt at the start of the fourth quarter oh Kyrie literally might be the only person who scores a point in the four did they just

Turn into the Virginia Cavaliers like did they a full hour without a field goal that’s what it felt like at times the four the start of the fourth quarter was so rough and it literally felt like Kyrie was going to be the only person who scored in the quarter so they

Desperately needed his uh shooting even though he didn’t make a single three in this game did he no oh five no didn’t three shot 62% from the field and missed all five of his threes which that shows you how efficient he was from two as

Well in this game and by the way the Virginia Cavaliers for those that don’t know is a college basketball team here in the states and uh they scored 14 points in the first half of one of their games tonight yeah there was a graphic that they literally went an hour of real

Tie without a field goal an hour an hour isane I think Luca may have gone an hour without a field goal this he makes his first two shots of the game misses 10 makes another one and then kind of was like I don’t know he’s sprinkled in a

Couple here and there and then got a then got a late layup that Maxi could have just taken himself but instead gives it up to Luca that was just a wide open nobody on the other end of the the so he was like five of 26 is just insane

But literally Luca’s worst shooting game before this was uh in 2022 so two years ago in Orlando nine of 29 that was his worst game before this one this this one was six of 27 so that’s even worse uh and then he’s never made less than 11

Field goals in a game where he takes at least 26 shots so man just a brutal shooting night for LCA but Kyrie Irving was the one that that pulled it out and was was able to give them exactly what they needed that’s why you go get a guy

Like Kyrie Irving to to pull you out the mud when you need it Dante Exel pulled him out the mud we’ll talk about him later I’m assuming uh LCA Luca in the first half at least his shots felt weird to me like he was I know that you know

He’s a he’s a super patient guy in the uh in the first half I’m sorry like in the mid-range where he’s sorry I I heard something check it over his shoulder I had to check over my shoulder well there’s there’s you you’re out with your friend and he’s like real real like

Suspicious about something you’re like now all of a sudden I’m feeling really suspicious well I saw a movie trailer for some new horror movie coming out soon that scared me a little bit last night you want to go check under the bed real quick yeah I did last night go

Check go check out the closet see there’s now I’m just hearing things no uh like he’s always method in the mid-range bumping pump faking but it felt like really wonky in the first half and it his shots in the second half looked fine he just wasn’t making them

Like there was a couple of step back threes over wimy that I thought maybe he was going for a highlight play and he got the first game of the season he hit that dagger three over a wimy close out but uh some of those shots I thought

Were a little unnecessary and it wasn’t only him this is something that happens if you watch burs games like people see wimy and they’re like I’m gonna I’m GNA be the one I’m gonna do like the Mavericks started the third quarter with three Daniel Gafford post-ups on wimy I

Mean that was just like well he got he got the first one of the game over him I know but he got the first one he was like all right I got this I’m like we don’t even see Daniel Gafford post-ups hardly ever why are we seeing them

Against wmy this doesn’t make any sense to me but there is that ego thing almost uh and he blocked Kyrie but that that one on that what I thought that back door cut by Kyrie which was a beautiful look I don’t know how on Earth he

Blocked that shot I mean that was insane but uh from Earth yeah that’s true you want to share the the Twitter comment you got I do not okay you can find it somewhere if you want but no I mean it wasn’t Luca’s worst game of the season

It was his worst shooting game of his career he’s had worst games where he’s turned the ball over a bunch been really upset at the refs he W he wasn’t that tonight in his defense he wasn’t had 16 assists um so he he impacted the game in

Other ways but you know this I think this will happen with with his shot diet and it’s a remarkable feat that the Mavericks won a game where Luca do you still have those stats up I mean how often did the Mavs win games when Lucas shot that poorly I’d have to

Assume almost never uh and this is in his career by the way too this isn’t like even like this season but the Mavs had lost every single game basically where he shot worse than like well let’s see he took he went 12 of 29 12 of 30 12

Of 28 like these are the the the bottom 10 worst shooting games of his career the Mavs are three and seven in those games now they’re four and seven that’s actually better than I was expecting but every single one of the wins came this season oh look at that look at that

Wow M’s finding ways to win uh yeah there was one that was in December the the Portland game December 2023 but then the other ones were the Denver game uh recently he shot 12 of 27 in that game he shot uh 12 of 28 in the Lakers game

In December as well 12 of 27 it’s not terrible that’s not terrible not good though he had like 39 points did he though yeah like he can you can still have a lot of points if you go to the free throw line but this is just the worst field goal percentage like

Shooting games but yeah but yeah and Luca by the way we’re talking about this as one of his worst games of the Season he still had 16 assists 10 rebounds triple double for him still uh like for deis sabonis this is an amazing game yeah this is about I mean sabonis I me

The assists are don’t even get me started honestly it really pisses me off the sabonis assists we’re going on t but the sabonis assists are at the beginning of the Season it was like it was I think it was even pre-season I can’t remember who asked the question but someone asked

Luca a question about Lively’s playmaking and Luca goes playmaking what are you talking about playmaking and this person goes well like his handoffs and stuff those count as assists that Luka’s response and like that’s the kind of assist sabonis kids listen my my opinions that’s a bonus are

Even though wasn’t the greatest shoo game for the Mavs and the Spurs shot okay this was a slinky game the slinky game where the Mavs pull out to a lead and then it comes back and the Mavs pull out to the lead and then it comes back

Just felt like every single time the Mavs got any kind of 10-point lead the Spurs would just find a way to come back yeah that you got to give some credit to the Spurs I was talking about this earlier today on my uh morning streams like I know that the record is terrible

And stuff like that but they’ve been playing decent basketball I think they were four and six in their last 10 going into this game with like winds over the Thunder uh the Pacers who have been a little bit rough lately but you know they haven’t been some Cakewalk team and

Zack low was talking about this on his podcast like since December since wh Wy came back from that ankle injury he suffered before that one Mavs game that freak injury they’ve won the minutes he’s been on the floor despite their terrible record so they’re not some like easy Cakewalk team and they played

Pretty hard tonight I mean defensively they they really clamped up that the pick and roll was absolutely destroying them and that’s why Luca was just you know putting on a playmaking clinic then they started to switch in the second half they made an adjustment there and that pick and roll wasn’t really there

Anymore and it slowed down into this isolation heavy game and a rough you know a game like that rough whenever Lucas has the game that he has because that’s usually the guy you want to take those shots and even in a rough shooting game you know the reason why luuka gets

27 shots in a game like this is it’s not like you’re gonna not put the ball in his hands right because you trust him either way so there was there was somebody that tweeted at me complaining about the shots LCA was taking he’s just not helping the team listen like this is

The this is what it is when you have a star player like this he’s the leading scorer in the NBA he’s going to take the shots right he always thinks they’re going to go in no matter what no matter what kind of shots he’s taking like

That’s you if you get the 50o game you get the 73o game sometimes you get a 16-point game and it’s sometimes like very rarely actually this is the first one he’s ever had like shooting this just shooting this badly ever uh you just got to live with it but yeah you

Look at the in this game the Mavs points in the paint 20 points in the paint the first quarter I think 14 in the second 10 in the third eight in the fourth like they the the Spurs adjusted by really clogging the paint and really taking

Away all the lobs and stuff like that you look at the centers and the reason why the maps went small which we’ll talk about touch on here just a second Gafford in the first half 11 11 points three rebounds three assists Lively in the first half eight points five

Rebounds and an assist and then you go for them in the second half and like it couldn’t really play him that much Gafford two points he had three shots he only got one you know only got one of them Lively had four points neither of them had oh Gafford had five rebounds

But Lively didn’t have any like they just weren’t as effective in the second half and you just couldn’t play the same kind of big ball because the Spurs took away that paint when they take away the paint and they just force you to try and take three-point shots or try to take

The isolation stuff like you were talking about you just can’t play a center like that that can’t shoot yeah and um again tip your cap to the Spurs because they did pretty good defensively and they did a pretty good job individually on Luca I mean Luca got

Shots that usually you you’re okay with a couple of shots maybe here or there that I thought were a little rough but he didn’t have any burst he has he has these games every once in a while where he’s dealing with an injury and like usually we’ll see him start grabbing it

Or like grabbing the injury or something like that classic move then then you’re like oh is he he is he hurt like he hurt and then he’ll like go off and score 15 points in a row or something but yeah in this one it just he just didn’t have

That same kind of burst you know you saw it when uh he got blocked twice in a row was that in the that was in the third quarter and he had like good looks but yeah like you said it just felt like he was a little bit

Slower getting to the rim it allowed like jedy Osman who had two LeBron James like dunks or uh blocks in this game uh allowed him to recover and then at the end I thought this was really interesting they put the ball in exam’s hands late in the game and they were

Running like a Luca was just screener and was rolling and they had him a couple times I I think the first time exm didn’t hit him I don’t know if their the angle wasn’t there or what but the second time there was the one where he was wide open

In the lane yeah late in the game and I was like what are you doing I’m I’m shocked XM didn’t make that pass that’s a pass you expect XOM to make so I’m wondering if maybe the angle wasn’t there or something uh and then the last

One Luca had a step on him but it did kind of feel like he didn’t have that burst like you said and Tre Jones was able to recover and tip it out of bounds off of Luca it would have been wild if they hit Luca on those rolls and then

Luca was the lob finisher yeah that would be hilarious well we can’t use a center we’ll use our point guard as the center I mean that’s interesting I mean like Luca and the short rle they never really go to it because I feel like that’s I don’t know if that’s something

You want luuka to regularly be doing also you want him you want him handling the ball in picking rolls but putting him in the short roll that’s kind of intriguing they run the Luca Kyrie like pick and roll or iners that’s more of like a we’re trying to get a switch in a

Mismatch so we can get the ball to Luca in the post or something that’s it doesn’t feel like there’s ever like a roll action off of that or something no or they or they pop out and they run the luk high divide which is pass back and

Forth until one of the Defenders yep like commits to a double and the other one gets a open three that’s my I love that play that’s one of my favorite ones they got oh exom though huge in this game you talked about it they ran some they ran

Some plays and stuff with him he was the ball handler and it’s nice to have somebody else besides luuka and Kyrie where those Defenders cannot leave those guys it almost creates like so the Mavs aren’t shooting the ball that well right now we we talked about it yesterday with

Isaac but they’re not shooting the ball that well so they don’t get the same kind of spacing really but if you have somebody else handling the ball besides Luka and Kyrie those two Defenders that are on those guys cannot leave them they just cannot so it creates it creates

More spacing and more gravity than you actually have like it’s a fabricated gravity almost because you have those two guys that just can’t be left you cannot help off of Luca donic you can’t help off of Kyrie Irving right yeah you can’t and exom is a smart player who’s

Got to make the right read pretty much every single time and he was huge it was nice to see because it feels like exm hasn’t had you know he averaged he averaged 15 points a game in December when Kyrie was out like that is just absolutely crazy and since he came

Back from injury I mean his role obviously has been much smaller but on purpose because they’re trying to hold him from injury too which right they want to be really careful about because he can be this important he can be a closing player I don’t think he’s going

To start anymore because I think they want to limit his minutes but he can be a closing player for sure and I talked about at the beginning he went from turning down multiple shots like multiple wide openen threes in the Denver game to making four of four he’s

The he’s the best most reluctant three-point shooter maybe in the entire NBA yeah and he’s 47% from three like get four tonight so it’s going to go up even if you up your attempts by like one and a half threes a game and that and it

Goes down to 41% like we’ll still gladly take that yeah like that’s still really good so yeah those were some huge shots man I mean like desperately in need of those shots when you hit them huge it’s so sad that they were desperately desperately in need of XM threes in the

Game against the Spurs but when Luca shoots six of 27 that happens I mean you you we might have literally witnessed the worst shooting game like it it wouldn’t overly surprise me if he never shoots this py again it’s the worst one of his career by a couple field goals no

Closing with maxi I was I was iffy on it when it happened because neveri didn’t rebound particularly well in this game and I thought they got burned a little bit in the fourth quarter by some offensive rebounds but first and foremost I want to say this I know this

Is locked on Mavericks wimy is gonna win 10 defensive player of the years oh you can say that he’s going to I mean it’s absolutely insane what he does so having Maxi out there uh who did Maxi and PJ Washington both did a tremendous job on

Victor wiy talk about he was a complete and total non-factor offensively in this game three of 13 with 12 points like you did a great job on him but um that that big xm3 that iced the game uh wi’s on kba on the perimeter Luca gets the ball in the paint wimy

Comes off kba to help kicks out to Maxi at the elbow uh uh the three like at the top of the key and Trey Jones is basically guarding two that point cuz wi’s in the paint he’s got to rotate over Dante X him wide open for three a

Great extra pass so it did work in this game and when you have I mean Wimpy’s a different a different Beast to to game plan for because if he’s anywhere near the paint you saw in this game he had six blocks and I don’t know how many

Shots he altered a 100 like it was it was a a total complete and total factor for the Mavs and just I know Ma I know Maxi hasn’t shot well but teams do respect it like they do we you saw that with Trey Jones I mean he he rotated

Hard I don’t know if that was maybe a mistake on his end game planwise but it led to XM getting a wide open three so it it worked I know Tim Hardway Jr can take some bad shots when Tim hard Jr takes a pull up mid-range shot it’s usually wide

Open he’s not like pulling up into contested mid-range shots all the time so Tim Hardway Jr took a mid-range shot that was blocked by wiama like Tim thought it was open wama blocked it he’s just a completely different Defender like you’ve been saying I’ve been working on this other project about W’s

Defense and like I think he could be the defensive player of the game right like of the year right now like it’s possible they are 11 points per 100 possessions better defensively when he’s on the court which may say more about the Spurs but like they’re the number one defense

In the NBA when he plays that’s crazy that’s actually nuts compared to like full team stats but still like he he’s just a game changer he has he averages you know three and a half blocks over a steal per game and three deflections per game it’s like higher than everybody

Else’s numbers across the board as far like Defensive Player of the Year candidates rello is voting for him he is yeah he said that good for him he’s he’s making the right choice I think I would vote for him for sure and I think kid putting Maxi in there just literally did

One thing one thing just pulls wmy six feet from the paint to the one of the three-point lines and then you have an open side on the other side that you can do whatever you want now the Spurs have bigger Wings you know so hands really good Defender you’ve got you know a

Bunch of athletes Blake Wesley always messes with the Mavericks because of his like speed and athleticism uh you know they got Kellin Johnson’s you know a big-ish wing they’ve got guys like that but uh just moving wemi like just six feet just moving him around a little bit

So he has to cover more ground to do that I think was the Big Game Changer in the end there and the you know this Spurs are also taking away the paint on the other end and so you couldn’t get the lobs you couldn’t get the offensive

Rebounds that you wanted on that end and so kid made the right choice closing with maxi I I want to defend Maxi a little bit here because he has gotten uh drugged through the mud and I I get like offensively I know he’s been he’s been

Really bad lately you’re about to say he got drugged like that’s why he’s not hitting any it’s hey maybe maybe it that would add up actually but uh I know he’s been so bad offensively the Nuggets game I thought he played really well defensively and him being on the floor

Guarding yic opened up everything else for the Mavs defensively allowed uh you to feel comfortable with Gafford and Lively helping off of Aaron Gordon like it allowed all of that to happen and tonight him and PJ Washington because PJ Washington also did a tremendous job did phenomenal against wimy I mean he felt

Like wimy looked uncomfortable every time he got the ball on a post up like every single time did not look know what was going on with him he just I don’t even know if I give Maxi enough credit for that because Wy just didn’t look comfortable at all in this game have you

L at the are you looking at the plus minus for this game I was just about to say that yeah Maxi plus 27 that’s crazy PJ Washington was a minus 18 and they played minutes together yeah I mean indiv individual like plus minus game to game could be really wonky but

If you’re a plus 27 like you yeah that’s that’s something he’s a plus 27 Luka plus five yeah XM was a plus 16 that was the second highest Gafford plus seven and then everybody else was like in between that insane plus 27 he was out there for

All the good things that happened to the Mavericks in this in this game basically yeah I mean he he is a good Defender like I I I know he can get cooked time to time uh from time to time one-on-one but everybody does and he’s a versatile

Defender like he he opens up things for you defensively now offensively is he gonna have to play better yes of course but um you could say that for a lot of guys on the team currently like the it’s crazy that Mavericks are six And1 their last seven their offense really has not

At least shooting wise uh because the execution is actually not bad I mean they’re doing a lot of really good things offensively but shooting has just not been their friend lately the thing I said yesterday is that the Mavs have slowly but surely turned like their good Defenders into like their good Defenders

From the 2022 run into good Defenders that don’t shoot as well you know they went from dorin Smith to PJ Washington went from Reggie Bullock to Derrick Jones Jr you went from you know that Maxi kba to this Maxi kleo you went from you know it’s just youve just changed

Them and so now you just have shaky shooting around all around yeah I mean Spencer D wty to Dante exom right you just went from a you know got a better Defender now on exom but worse shooter I don’t know I don’t know how to I don’t know how to parse that definitely

Definitely a more reluct shooter in next a lower ceiling score like Spence would have 30 points on the road in a game seven like that’s Luca going off really kind of overshadowed the he hit five threes it was the only time in his career he would hit five threes yeah but some reason

Spencer jwy would hit those with the Mavericks yeah I mean but it feels like you have I don’t want to take too many things away from those guys that you mentioned because they were incredible for the Mavs in 2022 but PJ PJ is more versatile offensively than Dorian was for sure I
