Wizards & Capitals *MUST* remain in DC until 2047?

Wizards & Capitals *MUST* remain in DC until 2047?

Well if there was a single word that I could use to describe the current situation in regards to the Washington Wizards and the capitals it would be mess because I can see this coming from a mile away based on where they play right now at Capital One Arena based on

Their future and based on the recent reports let’s see what’s going on DC attorney general warns capitals and wizards against Virginia move we remember about three or four months ago it actually might have been like a six months ago I don’t know exactly what it was but there was the announcement there

Was the plan there was the renderings that were released a possible new arena for both the Wizards and the Capitals in Northern Virginia now they would still very likely be called the Washington Wizards and the Washington Capitals but they would get a brand new Arena and

They would be outside of the District of Colombia it’s understandable considering the hard you know building constraints in that area how many people are there that they would possibly move maybe to Alexandria of Virginia but apparently now that is not happening and they’re saying that these teams have to remain

Within the District of Colombia until at least 2047 and so where does that put the current status of both of these teams home arena they share the same Arena Capital 1 Arena which did receive an interior seating renovation not too long ago but it’s commonly regarded Capital

One arena is as a very poor or I wouldn’t say very poor but let’s call it a bottom tier both NHL and NBA arena and that’s the idea for possibly moving in the next few years with the lease coming up will it possibly be extended will there be some type of compromise within

Capital One Arena to where maybe it gets another renovation but really what’s the point of continuously renovating and dumping money into an arena that at this point has a very obsolete seating design wouldn’t it make more sense to build a new Arena could there be an issue of

Land that’s even available to be built on in the district of Colombia and if they have to stay in DC until at least 2047 will they be forced to remain at Capital One arena with some Rinky Dink renovation there are a lot of options and that’s why I said at the beginning

Of this video this is a total mess DC attorney general says capitals and wizards can’t leave DC until 2047 Monumental says that they can so there’s some disagreements here between the group that’s trying to get the Wizards in capitals out of DC and possibly into a new Arena into a new

Development and the DC attorney general saying no they can’t leave until at least 2047 it becomes a big issue when you understand the current Arena situation and if they stay at Capital One Arena until 47 now technically they could stay at Capital One Arena the problem is it would just get really

Decrepit with the rise of the new Arenas you know in both the NBA and the NHL there’s multiple teams planning on getting new Arenas this will go further and further down the list in terms of worst Arenas again it’s not horrible it’s not like an Oakland Athletic situation to where it’s a multi-purpose

Dump but this is not a good Arena and the problem is if they’re saying they must remain in DC until 2047 is there another area in which they could try and build the idea was to use the lease and kind of Leverage that both the the Wizards and the capitals they’re under

The same ownership and that ownership was thinking well maybe if we move to Northern Virginia we can build an arena there we can get some tax money it’ll be an amazing upgrade you get out of DC you get a brand new Arena you do some type of compromise with the public and get

Money from them in Virginia and Tech technically Virginia would get some pro sports teams I believe Virginia I read this a few years ago or maybe like a year ago Virginia is the biggest state or the state with the most population that does not have a pro sports team now

Technically if they do move to Northern Virginia I really wouldn’t consider it Virginia’s team unless they change their name to the Virginia Wizards or the Alexandria Wizards whatever you want to call them which I don’t think they would do so there there are some unknowns when

It comes to this situation but this is one of those things where it’s like like it’s so messy and it’s like you’re looking at two different scenarios if the move goes through and they go to Northern Virginia I mean I guess that’s decent you’re getting a new arena for

Both of these teams but if it doesn’t go through and they’re saying it possibly won’t now about a month ago this was basically completely shot down this was something when they were discussing in terms of the politics of this that was basically completely shut down as well

The idea of moving this team to Virginia you can see the renderings that were released we get this all the time you know are we going to have to file these renderings into the bin of Never Happened probably because these renderings very likely will never happen you will never get the Wizards in

Northern Virginia nor the capitals but either way when it comes to this situation you it’s just like where do they go in the 2030s do they just stay at Capital One Arena do they try and do another renovation to it there was the idea that they were going to try and

Renovate behind the baskets and put in like picnic tables it’s just so cheap it is not it’s a very similar Arena to Wells Fargo Center and the Wells Fargo Center home of the Philadelphia 76ers also got a very similar interior renovation to where they changed out all

Of the seats but you’re not able to really customize the seats and really like change how they’re they they fit into an arena if that makes sense you can change the seats in terms of making the seats more comfortable but if you know about the Wells Fargo

Center they’re trying to get a new arena in Philadelphia that could open by 2031 and the idea is you’re going to stay at Capital One Arena until 2047 that’s 16 years after the 76ers get a new Arena and the Wells Fargo Center in Capital

One Arena I kind of put in the same boat so that’s why this situation is very you know tedious and now they’re saying well they can’t leave until 2047 who really knows when it comes to this type of stuff nobody knows what’s going to happen in the 2030s maybe they’ll be

Able to get out somehow but it certainly could develop into a terrible Arena situation if nothing ends up happening and we could see Capital One Arena move deeper and deeper in terms of the worst stadiums in the NHL and the NBA because right now it’s really not horrible I

Mean I would still rank it honestly like bottom seven bottom eight but it’s not dire if this Stadium receives very little Renovations which I’m guessing worst case scenario because the lease is is going to be coming up soon you know they would very likely be able to get

Some type of money for a renovation a Capital One Arena but I don’t know if this attorney general is correct and they’re locked into DC until 2047 there’s really no Bluff you can have because at least if the lease is is coming up you could say well we’re going

To leave give us money or we’re gone but but at this point they’re saying no they must stay in DC until at least 2047 and there is some disagreement I’m sure this will all be resolved at some some point but if this actually is true it is not a

Good situation for the Wizards and the capitals to stay at Capital One Arena again it’s not like an Oakland Athletics situation this is a legitimate NBA arena this is also where the Georgetown b men’s basketball plays and what a terrible atmosphere that is Georgetown has been horrible like the past seven or

Eight years not because necessarily of the Arena but it doesn’t help when a college basketball team plays at an NBA arena so so there is that but I will say man the state of Virginia they keep striking out on potentially getting sports teams but this would be kind of a

Different situation because they probably wouldn’t change their name or anything like that but either way this is something that’s going to have to be worked out to where is the actual solution a renovation to Capital One Arena I just can’t see that being the solution I don’t think this is the end

Of the story I do think they will try and develop or or pitch some type of new Arena if it has to be in DC it’s going to have to be in DC but they’re going to try and get a new Arena before you know 2047 cuz my goodness the only option

Would be some type of huge remodel in the coming years to Capital One Arena or if you’re forced to stay in DC look for another place that’s still being disputed maybe you know you give it a year two years they’ll be able to find a way out of DC altogether even after the

Attorney General comes out and says they can’t leave until 2047 maybe they negotiate they work out a deal that all can be done but I’m just saying where we are right now if they actually have to stay in DC until 2047 I’m guessing their focus has to shift to trying to find an

Area of land to build a new arena in DC because you would think Capital One Arena by the late 2030s early 2040s that it’s just not an ideal situation I mean it still is you know a legitimate Arena I guess that seats up to around 20,000 I

Get it but they’re certainly looking for something better you know very good comparison is well as Fargo Center and they’re trying to get a new arena in Philadelphia by 2031 but I just can’t see them staying at this Arena until 2047 so this will be worked out in the

Coming years I’m sure but an interesting situation possibly staying in DC we will see either way guys that is going to do it for this video make sure you follow me on X link to that’s always in the description

Discussing the Washington Wizards and Capitals NBA & NHL Arena situation

  1. Unless privately funded, I cant imagine the state of Va. willing to spend big money for a new arena for Washington on the very northern tip of the state where most of of the state would not be well served.

  2. The position of the DC AG is that Monumental is contractually obligated to play at Capitol One Arena until 2047. The arena received $50 million in publiclly financed renovations in 2007 and Monumental agreed to extend their lease until 2047. Monumental is claiming they can pay off the public bonds and be released from their lease. The arena itself is owned by Monumental but the ground it is sited on is owned by the District.

  3. Idk, still see this ending up in NOVA where & how planned per original announcement which was just a month or 2 ago. As another stated, the owner can do whatever the heck they wish ultimately. I'd dig seeing it remain in DC myself, but as DG said.., where in DC?

  4. This isn’t very hard to think through. Either give CapitalOne a massive exterior upgrade, or build a new arena in Navy Yard or in conjunction with the new RFK stadium. Boom, solved!

  5. The word ‘renovation’ was used 10 times in a 9 minute video. This channel needs to have its name changed to the renovation station.

  6. Please explain how it is one of the worst arenas in North America? Maybe because next to the Chinatown neighborhood?

  7. Hey man can you make a video on the new renderings of the mixed used development surrounding the Philadelphia sports complex set to be completed in 2028 Im actually a resident of the city and it seems like the master plan is a district and entertainment life after the sixers depart in 2031

  8. Capital One Arena isn't a bottom tier arena. Q
Anyone saying that, hasn't been. It's one of the nicest NHL/NBA arenas I have been to.

  9. For the first time I'm actually on the side of the public. I been to Washington D.C nothing is wrong with Capitol One Arena. Nothing. Downtown location easy for everyone to get too. Great for concerts and events. Just win some games. Also the Washington Redskins might move back to D.C. keep the D.C teams in D.C

  10. Maybe I’m tripping but I don’t see anything wrong with this arena. It’s on par with Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, which you praise all the time

  11. Renovate the exterior. They've already done with the interior, the exterior becomes irrelevant to the surrounding area. Upgrade access to Metro for better public transportation link to the arena, has small roof canopy over the sidewalks for fans.
