Talk about that and all those changes was it enough did he make enough of an effort and let’s start here though how did the Mavericks get a win like this the Mavericks get the win against the Miami Heat they win 114 to 108 that’s right your Dallas Mavericks held

A team under 110 points it’s insane maybe a miracle and it didn’t look pretty to start Mavs got out to a 7 to 21 start in this game the heat were bombing from three and the Mavs were the Mavs defense looked as bad as it had the last couple

Of games they’ve lost five of six coming into tonight and their defense looked like that same defense that we had seen and that’s the same defense where I looked at that those games before and I said man this team is just not listening to their head coach they’re not

Listening to any of the schemes this team is lost and this team does not know what they’re doing when it comes to defense they’ve just lost it they’ve lost the plot and it looked like that exact same team to start Luca was missing guys on back Cuts other guys

Were missing guys right down the middle of the lane not closing out on the right guys they had there was a f it was a first like five minutes first five minutes of the game not even first three minutes of the game it was 5 to 1

Two dunks and three layups 10 points in the paint in the first like three minutes of the game and I just thought here we go again here we go again I self-edited myself because I know I’ve I have now as I’ve been doing this show

For so long I have met many of you at Mavs games I love it every single time but I’ve also met many of your children and that say they listen to the show too so I’ve self-edited that lastar they allowed two dunks and three layups in

The first three minutes and you just go this is the same defense and then the heat started nine of 11 from three they were just hitting all their shots but the Mavs fought back and they with withheld it they withstood it they showed some fight they showed some care

They showed some intensity they showed some desperation the Mavericks were the more desperate team tonight the Mavs were the team that needed this win more than the Miami Heat did Miami Heat you know it’ be cool if they would have won this game but you know they’re sitting

Where they are they’re in the you know they’re I guess guess they’re they’re tied now with the Sixers for the six seed but still like they didn’t need this win as desperately as this Dallas Mavericks team did and seems like for weeks we’ve been running into teams that

Are more desperate than the Mavericks and now the Mavericks team came out like that do I think it was because of a coaching change a roster change a rotation change I don’t think so I think the players just came around had the players only meeting that Mar Marie

Morris and Kyrie and all them called and just said you know what we we’ve got to step up our game we’ve got to start from maybe from the jump we’ve got to wake up and this game was almost the complete opposite of the Pacers game in the sense

That remember that Pacers games the one right before this the one that was the Doom and Gloom everything sucks I said they should fire Jason kid I still believe he should not be the coach but they start out 11 and0 and you go all right here we go let’s go this Mavericks

Team has got this they’ve got this game they’re going to win this game feeling good about it right from the start off setting the tone and and then what they do the rest of the game they lolly gag back on defense they you know didn’t put in the right amount of effort they

Didn’t have the same intentionality and they just got destroyed by the Pacers speed and their offense now the heat are not the offense that the Pacers are or the Celtics are or some of these other teams they faced recently let’s not pretend that they just had an amazing

Defensive feat against the team that’s so great the heat were missing uh Tyler herro who’s obviously huge for their offense missing a couple other players too but and the heat are like 20th in the NBA and offense they’re still a playoff team they’re still a team that

Can score buckets when they need them a team that has Jimmy Butler and Bam that are two All-Star level players has dunan Robinson who’s hitting a bunch of threes and has taken a you know step forward this season I guess it’s he took a step back forward I don’t know if he took

Like a forward step but he was he was back and now he’s now he’s back from being back and so this team can score in in the clutch and can you has won a bunch of games this season and the Mavericks holding them I think was it’s

Just a good sign it’s just a good feeling and is it repeatable this is kind of the hard thing with with a game like this is that you didn’t have the same level of dynamic offensive players and that’s why this Heat team is not a top five you know they’re not the

Celtics or the Pacers when it comes to offense they don’t have a tyres hurn they don’t have a Tatum or a brown or you know several of those right they’ve got they’ve got Butler they’ve got bam they’ve got Caleb Martin they’ve got uh Terry roir who was was good at at points

Tonight like they’ve got some of these guys but they don’t have the same kind of extremely Dynamic offensive player they don’t have a Luca and that’s what in today’s NBA creates these insane offenses you’ve got one guy that has every single option in front of him every single one of them

And so then what do you do how do you defend Alca how do you defend a how do you defend a uh how do you defend a you know a yic or somebody like that sorry I just had a glitch in the system right there a glitch in the

Actual system of my computer not a glitch in my system although it does feel like I’ve just let out a long sigh or like a long I don’t know flatulence because it just felt like it the air was kind of let out of the room in a good

Way in sense that you’re holding your breath for that whole stretch of of lost games and then all of a sudden okay back on track at least a little bit was a game like this repeatable I think there are things that were repeatable for sure I think the clutch stuff I

Think the closing lineup was really interesting I’m excited to talk about that a little bit later but the Mavs got a got a kickart from Luca in the third quarter they you know withstood the Heats insane three-point shooting in the first quarter and in the beginning of

The second quarter and so that’s why they were down early it was a you know it was a 15-point game at one point the the ma the Mavs were down and then in the third quarter Luca comes out and does what he does Luca only had two

Points in the second quarter the last time Luca played at least 10 minutes and scored two points or less in a quarter was when oh wait December 20th he has not scored less than two points in a quarter since December which is insane to me uh and but he only

Scored two points it was kind of a team effort in the first half Luca and Kyrie both you know just had like pedestrian Star first halfs right Kyrie and Luca had what Luca had 12 Kyrie had 11 points and then coming out the Third quarter it

Was Luca and Kyrie time Luca 17 points five boards five assists he played all 12 minutes in the third quarter kind of going back to the rotation that he used to play uh you know for like last year and before where he would play all the third quarter he hasn’t been doing that

As much this season but 17 points he set the tone and he just was unguardable they kept trying to throw different looks at him they kept trying to you know cut off passes and cut off this and Luca could just get the switch he wanted got Terry roir got Caleb Martin got

Whoever got bam hit hit his threes what did he get how many threes did he get in that in that quarter three three of five from three went to the free throw line twice finally got a call he had that play where he finally got a foul call

Where Terry roier whacked him across the arm and he just puts his hands up to heaven and goes I got a foul I got a call says it to says it to the audience you got to love that but it was him that kickstarted it and then Mavs defense the

Defensive effort was there from everyone from Luca not early but but later uh from Kyrie from PJ Washington who gave it from Dante exm who we’ll talk about in the closing lineup from Maxi and then the two big from Derrick Jones Jr who got the start and then the two bigs

Drick Lively played 23 minutes Daniel Gafford played 21 minutes Maxi played 22 minutes they got what they needed out of each of the three bigs and that was really huge for them in this game too so coming up let’s talk about that closing lineup that I’ve been mentioning what

That because each one just means so much to this to this to the standings to this season there’s the added pressure of last season missing the entire playin and you know you know kind of the Mavs were sliding down that it’s so okay feels like they at least the ship is not

Actively sinking at this point after you get a win let’s talk about that closing lineup though the Mavs find a way to get a win and Jason kid goes the closing lineup he goes with Luca he goes with Kyrie Dante exom Maxi and Lively I thought this was a really interesting

Thing and kid was trying everything from the jump he tried a different starting lineup we’ll talk about that a little a little later but he tried different lineups he was throwing out guys I felt like he made 15 substitutions in the first quarter he was trying things I

Mean it looked like he was trying stuff for his job basically is what it looked like to me but you look at that fourth quarter and they just kept even with him you know 25 to 23 in that fourth quarter but they got some really big huge

Massive plays from from guys uh Mavs took a timeout they were down two with seven minutes to go Miami had gone on a 14 to4 start to start the fourth quarter and it looked like oh my God go is this team going to fall apart again it felt

Like the first quarter all over again where the heat were getting some shots Jimmy Butler came out aggressive Dallas was two of 10 to start that fourth quarter through the seven minute Mark and you just go is the offense going to fall apart is this defense G to just not

Be able to get any stops is this what it’s going to be like and then I think there was a play that kind of kick started the Mavericks and really jump like jump started this crowd a little bit and six minutes 38 SEC 28 seconds so right after that timeout broken play the

Ball was batted around k catches the ball in the in the right corner and kind of has to save it and so he saves the ball and then he tosses it over to Luca and Luca has to throw up this wild turnaround not facing the basket and

Then he’s facing the basket three that went in which is just a shot of course Luca is gonna make that shot of course he makes the three the Mavs Take the Lead again they go up 98 to 97 this crowd really got into it and you just

Felt especially here in the AAC you felt like this crowd really just wanted a win in whatever way they were going to get and whatever big plays they were going to cheer for they’re going to be excited for it was going to get them out of

Their seat and all that and so that play I think kind of kickstarted it it was a wild broken play there was extra effort from Kyrie and then an insane play Insane Luca magic play from Luca and that’s what you that’s what you want and then that’s then after that that’s when

Kid put in the the starting this closing lineup that I mentioned before with maxi and exom with Luca Kyrie and Lively no PJ Washington in the closing lineup no Josh green no Derrick Jones Jr no Gafford he didn’t go small with maxi he went with Lively and Maxi and I thought what

They were able to do there is they were able to take advantage of some size because myami doesn’t have a ton of size they’ve got bam and he’s great but he’s probably what 69 610 they’ve got yic and he didn’t play any in the fourth quarter

And then you’ve got you know Butler and roier Wing guard you know haime hakz played eight minutes he’s got some size but you know it’s not 610 s foot like Maxi and Lively were and they were able to really take advantage with that size a little a little bit got 11 rebounds

Got three offensive rebounds in the in the period which I thought was big and so that’s something that uh they took advantage of with that and you still kind of had some spacing and you had the lob threat with Lively like you have all those different options and so if you’re

Able to do that while also Staying Alive defensively which is what they just needed to do you can do that and you can play those guys together you can play Maxi and Lively together you can’t play Lively and Gafford I still keep getting that question from some of you uh but

Yeah you can’t play those two guys together for multiple different reasons but they’re effect the Maxi Lively Duo was effective in that fourth quarter I thought and Dante exom he’s so big for this team he honestly is we’ve T we talked I talked about it going back to

The off season when they signed him when I said man look at Dante exom let’s watch him in FBA and let’s see what he does because I think he’s somebody that brings a skill set that the Mavericks could really use and he did in FBA he ended up being like the third ball

Handler for that Australia team and you saw how they trusted him you know it was basically Giddy and then Patty Mills and and then Dante exam and he was the guy handling the ball doing stuff like pushing in transition playing defense playing hard no point of attack defense

And what have the Mavericks needed in this run this stretch of bad games more than anything point of attack defense because it’s been really bad really really bad but exom only played 17 minutes they’re really trying to limit his minutes which I understand he’s important he brings a different element

To this team that they don’t have in anybody else you can’t just plug in Hardy or Tim Hardaway or Josh or whoever else just because and XM are both Australian doesn’t mean that they’re interchangeable but you can’t just put somebody else in and do the things that

Exm does and so they need him you kind of have to put him in bubble wrapper on Ice to try and keep him keep him fresh for a playoff run so I get them only playing him 17 minutes but a lot of those how many of those minutes came in the fourth

Quarter it’s not rhetorical I’m actually looking up 8:45 so eight8 minutes and 45 seconds of his 17 was like almost H over half of his minutes came in the fourth quarter when they needed him and I kind of like that break in case of emergency

With Dante exom he hit two threes he had five assists he had some good plays as well he hit a three um he hit a three with three minutes and 13 seconds left that Miami just didn’t close out on him that he’s GNA get left alone that’s the

Big swing skill for him is can he hit some of these threes can he hit some of these open shots because they’re going to leave him open because that’s something that he wasn’t good at at the beginning of his career is hitting threes and so Dante exom was massive in

That in that front uh Mavs took the lead 103 to 101 after that three and so that was huge and so Dante XM huge I thought it great because of his ball handling he hit a couple of shots went to the free throw line too the assist the playmaking

And the other thing that was really big about that closing unit Derek freaking Lively massive had some huge stops on bam matab bio late where he’s in the post bam matab is posting him up maybe could have called for some fouls here and there but played him straight up and

Stopped him at least twice maybe three times that I can think of off the top of my head there was one at 2 minutes and 48 seconds where he got a great stop in the post against him there was one at 1 minute 39 when he got a stop on him in

The post and then at 128 he got an offensive rebound kicked it out to Kyrie for the three they go up 109 104 and they kind of never looked back at that point because they went up five and that’s two possessions and uh man that

Was just that was such a huge that was a huge play for Derrik lley to get those offensive rebounds to defend B in the post and lively man he he had maybe hit a little bit of a wall there’s there’s some talk and I know Brad Townson wrote

A report that you know the Mavs were not necessarily disappointed but kind of like all right maybe this is the rookie wall for Derrick Lively his defense has not been the same since he returned he had the face injury still wearing that mask and so uh wait did he wear the mask

Tonight now now I’m like doing this Stanley Hudson does he have a mustache thing from the office trying to think if he was wearing a mask tonight God that’s it’s going to bother me it’s going to in the chat I’m sure you’re all like of course he was wearing

The mask or of course he wasn’t wearing the mask but I like can’t think of he was wearing the I could see him on the he was not wearing the mask right he was this is really gonna bother me I’m gonna derail the show here for like two

Minutes he was not wearing the mask today okay he was he wasn’t okay everyone feel Vindicated that I could out that you were proven correct but not we’re in the Mas but he come back from that injury and they felt like he wasn’t the same defensively and

In this game seemed like he had it and they played him you know they they played him 23 minutes he came off the bench in this game he didn’t start Gafford got the start and so but Derrick Lively made a huge impact I thought in the minutes that he played plus 17 total

Which is very telling only four points only two rebounds the two offensive rebounds but hey you’ll take that no block shots only one assist but still that’s why you can’t just look at the box score you got to watch the games you got to see what these guys are doing and

See what things impact the game the most and I thought Derrik Lively had a really impactful couple of minutes there in the fourth quarter coming up let’s talk about why Lively didn’t start let’s talk about that starting lineup with PJ and Gafford we’ll get into that and more coming

Thing that I speculated about the other day is that could Jason K decide to go with Derrick Jones Jr instead of Josh green because and a listener came up to me and said this exact thing Nick as soon as you said Josh green has a hard time going around

Screens I can’t unsee it it’s the only thing I can see when I watch him now he has a hard time going around screens which is true and it stinks if Josh was better at navigating screens which is a very hard skill in the NBA to do it’s

What made Reggie Bullock so important for that Western Conference Finals run team ding anony Smith too you can navigate screens you come around the screen and figure out where you know where the the player is going to end up being and all that if you can do that

Then uh you can go go far in the NBA and Josh Green’s just not he’s just not there yet I think it takes a level of Rhythm I think it takes a level of knowledge of the player that you’re playing against and all that but Derek

Jones J just a little better at it and he’s got more length at this point length is really important with screen navigation too and so he starts drik Jones Jr he only plays about about 12 minutes which is the the least of anybody that played today actually but

Gafford getting the start I thought set ofone as well Gafford is Gafford seems to be to me luuka does this a little Kyrie doesn’t really do it but Gafford seems to me to be the guy that can get everybody hyped that can do something now Luca obviously does something crazy

Hits that three that I mentioned earlier where he just turns around and Chucks it up and all that but gafford’s the guy that can get a couple of offensive boards tip a rebound get a dunk dive on a loose ball something like that and then he just stands up and he just like

Screams this feral scream basically at this point and gets the crowd into it this crowd loves when Gafford has those extra effort plays they love rebounds they love extra effort plays and Gafford seems to be that guy that can kind of do that and set it set a tone in a way and

So I thought starting with Gaff was an interesting move especially since the heat didn’t have that much size but they do have quickness in a big with uh with bam I thought it was an interesting way to start Gafford 12 points in the game seven rebounds two of them on the

Offensive end had a block shot as well thought defended the rim pretty well three fouls but you know they they’re attacking just over and over again and uh man I I thought it was it was an interesting move in the starting lineup and then he just started kid just

Started like bringing different guys in and trying different guys he played Tim Hardway junr 20 minutes maybe we can talk about that do I have do I have to do I have to still talk about him but he played him you know he played him 20 minutes and

They started to rotate other guys in and he was just trying stuff I mean it really did feel like he was like I’m just going to keep trying different guys and different combinations until something works and that’s a lack of that is a lack of comp lack of lack

Of complacency that we’ve seen from kid in a while where he was actively felt like he was actively trying in this game at least to try stuff to try different things he didn’t settle for a lineup the one thing I guess we’ll get into it now might as well the one thing

I’ll say is I don’t think Tim hard Jr’s really helping this team a ton still they played him 20 minutes three of 11 from the field he hit two threes he went to the free throw line he had a couple of good plays here there but I don’t

Know that the good plays that he’s bringing make up for the missed rotations on defense or the lack of adding another ball handler or something else with the team and I just They’re Gonna Keep sticking with him it’s one of these things with kid and with Tim

Hardway we can we can talk about this the rest of the season basically they’re gonna stick with kid the front office and the ownership is gonna stick with kid because why would you remove a coach right now they just they’re not goingon to do that so as much as we would want

It as much as we think that that may be the right thing it’s not going to happen and then kid kind of in turn in like this with the same in the same method is also gonna stick with Tim Hardway Jr not gonna turn on him now what’s the point

He’s part of the rotation he can get hot sometimes and you’ve got a player that all right do I just totally bench him and then what then do I lose the player what if he’s come back comes back next year then what happens if like what

Happens if we need him all of a sudden and then he comes in and he’s a streaky shooter that needs some Rhythm and then all of a sudden he can’t give us anything I don’t know some of you are probably screaming at me just saying just just bench him he’s a he’s a

Professional he should be able to you know just sit and then come back and and do all that I don’t know you don’t know the Dynamics behind it but he’s gonna keep keep sticking with him because he’s play he played him more in this game than he has the last

Two uh he was a plus seven though so the minutes they didn’t lose the minutes that he was in there which is a good sign who else stood out Luca I mean we talked about Luca 35 points 11 boards 11 assists only four turnovers thought he was really good the defense was rough

Early on but another his fourth straight 35o triple double in a row it’s an NBA record probably should have said that before the end of the show here but man he was just really good he hit a bunch of Threes he was you know just I his his

There somebody said this I think it was Noah from smoking Cuban on on Twitter but um they they’re running like catch and shoot stuff for for Luca where they’re kicking back to him and he’s he’s hitting these catch and shoot shots and I’m not shocked anymore for a while

In Luca’s career anytime he would take a catch and shoot shot it would be like two or three times a week it felt like he would take a catch and shoot three it would be a surprising thing that one he took it and got a catch and shoot shot

But then when he made one it would be surprising that he made it and now I’m not surprised at all I think playing off of Kyrie has really helped him to open that part of his game to embrace that part of his game and that’s something that that they’ definitely benefited

From and they did in this game seven of 13 from three only went to the free throw line four times for Luca that’s a different LCA donic though we’ve seen he was playing the same game he just wasn’t getting foul calls but interesting Mavs didn’t close with PJ Washington he had

Kind of a rough shooting night one of six from from from three but defensively I thought he brought a lot most of the game Jimmy Butler was quiet 14 points for him he only had eight points I think going into the fourth quarter and then he started getting really aggressive and

Then PJ didn’t play as much in that fourth they decided to go with the I mentioned the the Lively Maxi lineup but kept him really quiet bam didn’t really kill him either it was Terry roir that was able to take advantage of like all right I got Luca I got Kyrie I got

Somebody else on me I’m gonna be able to take advantage of the attention Jimmy and Bam are getting 27 points for him he had 11 assists too that kind of snuck up on me who else stood out talked about Josh a little bit talked about Lively Kyrie he had some moments 23 points

Again again 23 points on 19 shots it see he seems offensively he seems off doesn’t seem like he’s getting the same amount of Separation I’m not going to go full on and say that there’s an injury or that he’s he has an injury but it just feels like something’s off with

Kyrie he’s just not getting the same shots he’s not getting the same stop or speed or stop and go like the agility on it and so I’m watching that that’s something I’m watching because he took 19 shots you think would be enough and especially for him he’s been super

Efficient this season he’s close to he was close to 54 90 shooting splits but another game where you just go all right 23 points on 19 shots it’s like exactly what he got against the Pacers so something something I’m looking at something I’m watching let me know in
