Other night but I mean you can’t look at this situation as have done having done anything else but spiral and then you get the knife just to mix some metaphors here you get the knife to twist even a little bit further with as you mentioned uh Shams bringing up the other day

Appropo of almost nothing except for how well Jaylen green played lately um about how the Nets had turned down a package that was starting with Jaylen green and picks now he did not go into the specifics of picks I know everyone wants to say well you don’t know okay that’s

Fine the a name was mentioned and picks were mentioned and we could build from there but it appears as if those um that the basis of that deal was sort of categorically um said no to by marks and Company out of the gate and we’re here to as you mentioned like litigate this

Again or relitigate it because we are going to have to do this with moves from now till the end of however this plays out because the guy and the regime that is in charge of making these moves is still doing it and so as long as that’s

The case we have to go back and look at the past moves to help and try to to try to inform a the ability to make future moves and like the competency around making moves as this team is clearly in a major transition period of which it is very difficult to

See the plan and even if you can see the plan about how successful that plan might be so yeah when these things get brought up it hurts to kind of talk about but how can you not I mean these these it’s these very moves or lack thereof that have the Nets in their

Current position which is if you take a hold the fan base I know this would be the case one of the lowest points to a fandom that people have have experienced with this team Point stop like that’s not a that that part is not a hot take

No not at all it’s been yeah for the fans and even for us obviously covering this team when you come in after games late in the season and you know there’s nothing of terrible impact on the line other than the picks that you don’t have control of and whether or not you’re

Going to make it look even better for Houston you know it’s funny you talk about how it was really only related to the Brooklyn Nets in the fact that Jaylen green has been playing really good basketball and this is someone who could have been playing somewhere else

As in the Brooklyn Nets and and this is why it’s interesting to me because all along the way even going back to when it was first reported and when we first discussed this back in December when you look at this trade package and we’ll get into as we have the the male Bridges

Performance part of this too but when you get into these it was always a player sometimes Jaylen green mentioned in that process and multiple picks the ambiguity around the picks how many picks all the picks some of the picks that was always something that you could

At least say well you know if you didn’t get every single one of your own back in control all four of them then would you really want to do it is two enough is a quote bad draft in 2024 enough depending on where that pick was going to go you

And I said hey man you need these back because then exactly what’s happening right now losing a lot of basketball games would actually be a silver lining for what happens in the the off season now though with Jaylen green it’s like this double down of well not only maybe

Could you have pushed for three of your picks back you also may have gotten the the perfect kind of young talented player figuring it out and selling your fan base on okay maybe it’s not a great year but at least we now have another piece in place and that’s and that’s

Where this story really took the biggest turn is that basically since the trade deadline that happened and look we talked about this at the trade deadline we mentioned jayen green specifically and we’ve talked about green specifically in the past to say this is the kind of guy you probably take

Chances on right like these post hype the the stock was kind of low it was looking a little unclear about where it was going to go or like what his ultimate upside was I mean not from that exact day but from very close to that day and specifically over these last

Like 10 days because really when shenon got hurt and they sort of opened up the offense to like a much more out in transition hit ahead like let’s play Fast let’s go small ball five with amen um Jeff green kind of like rolling through the five there I mean they

Played Jo Lando the the other day but like they they sort of stylistically changed up a little bit they’re on the super hot streak and it’s and he’s one of the main reasons I mean this is where the story takes this like movie like turn in the in the third act where

You’re like oh no like oh no like second a second climax to this film my goodness right and as we watch like Mel Bridges struggle game after game to find any shots and to get anything going and to like you know the turnovers SL they win

But it was like sort of despite his or in spite of his performance last night or two nights ago not because of it and then you see Jaylen green when you hear that these were the names plus the picks like and then you have to watch these

Like ships passing in the talent night almost as they cross each other I mean the numbers are scary dude like if you look through March Jaylen green through March so going back even before shenon got hurt 50 4180 20 points a game plus 19 net rating 62% true shooting male Bridges 40

4176 7 but on more minutes by the way 17.8 points three three more minutes per game uh minus 5.2 net rating 55% true shooting and if you watch Jaylen green during this time absolutely shot out of a cannon like playing like a track like looks like a track star looks completely

Under control just looks like he’s been turned loose and you just can’t unsee it now you can’t unsee it because it’s it’s like he’s five years younger the whole thing it’s just the whole thing and so we just end up at this spot like where you have to start

Asking yourself is like markx equipped to make these decisions like is he just too blinded now look are we being a little bit results oriented yes except that we talked about this before these results came in right so like this is why I actually sample size makes it

Sorry makes it look worse now or it makes it look like it should have been been the thing that we thought was possible to whatever degree the trade was going to happen Etc this is the exact reason why because the likelihood of one thing Jaylen green maybe figuring

It out and being a young player and having control and getting picks back being worth it in the long run over maintaining male Bridges and taking that road that we’ve laid out dozens of times and given you a lot of reasons why it is not just as easy as saying wait till the

Offseason go get a superstar and it’ll all be back on track now we’re actually this is actually a worse sample size from the standpoint of ke male and Trust Shawn March and here we go it’s actually gotten worse and worse and worse and that’s why coming up here in a second

Offering less for Mel Bridges and they think that hey we’re actually giving you an even better value here like there’s a world where this doesn’t this trade doesn’t offer doesn’t exist anymore at all at nearly the level it may have once looked but also Shawn marks because he

Made the choice in the moment to stick with Mel Bridges to not get back to picks to not take Jaylen green he’s going to go to the off season and say yeah listen we believe that we can attract Superstars and Mel Bridges is going to be a part of that and we we’ve

Already done the whole version of this where this isn’t male’s fault or you at his feet but organizationally he’s gonna I guarantee you if he remains at the helm this offseason he’s not going to look back and say oh we could have should have let’s revisit that and make

A different decision here he’s going to double and triple down on it go try to get a star of EX level and and convince himself and the fan base that this is why you kept male and cam Johnson and everybody here together that’s exactly right like the way you put it is exactly

Right like you this doesn’t make it this makes it even harder to trade him honestly like from probably the organization because now it’s value he’s we weirdly almost like perversely probably increased the value he hasn’t actually increased any value like Bridges has probably dropped a little

Bit of value here but in your mind the value is increased because of what you already turned down for him right and look and we’ve been down this multiple times it’s not just Bridges I think we we suspect that Marx has fallen victim to this in the past overvaluing the

Assets already in the door it’s probably why Dorian finy Smith is still on the team it’s why some of these guys didn’t get traded when they should have and maybe it was a dollar a day too late and a dollar short uh on some of the other

Trades that they made because they were and we heard this from other things like this was reported even during the trade deadline was it like I think it was windhorse maybe um and I apologize for not sourcing this quote right but it was that like there’s growing belief among

Teams that like Marx doesn’t really want to trade these like you know he over he’s asking too much for these guys like right setting a high price point because he doesn’t want to trade them anyway really yeah and and look I get that this is all part of the chess game right you

Things are leaked strategically to screw people or to drive value down I get that part of it like I’m not falling for that but it also follows this track that we’ve seen for many years which is like why didn’t this guy get traded like why

Is he still on the team right oh now it’s like and now the value is over and so with bridges yeah like I think we’re in a scary place where when you turn down a potential package like this and it I mean obviously looks so terrible right

Like green has been amazing and like and the Nets have only gotten worse Bridges has only gotten worse the situation looks only more dire like Simmons looks cooked right like Bridges can’t make any shots these guys are getting hurt they lose every game it’s gone so bad that you are pro

Like you said it before it’s like you’re now probably forced to double and triple down on your mistake to prove that you weren’t wrong which you were which you were which you were and most people know that you were like you know it’s also very self-evident that it was the wrong

Decision right this is secret now short of them somehow getting and now it really can only be the the highest level Superstar as far as I’m concerned somehow pulling off a 2025 move around a legit top 10 guy that’s it right top 10 guy very unlikely short of that these

Moves are going to look really really bad in hindsight there’s no way there’s there’s almost no way they can’t like how can it not and a and a funny remember take that for what in the spirit that it’s being mentioned a funny little note about this too is remember

Kale Bridges with his contract it’s not the worst contract in the world and it still isn’t but also Jaylen green this was a part of it signs the rookie extension it’s going to be 10 and then $12 million the club options have been exercised guess what if you had made

That trade you would have cut the cost of these two players by swapping them you cut the salary cap hit in half and does that matter sure does if you’re thinking about keeping Nicholas Claxton around right if you’re thinking about maybe moving on from Dorian Finn Smith

In the offseason though that has seemed unlikely at least to this point you can generate another 20s something million dollars in cap space by doing this decision and then also having your young draft pick so there’s more than just hold on one second let me stop real

Quick there is I’ll push back on one thing like green is up for an extension here right like so for sure he is but I mean and and so okay Jaylen green performing at a very high level now and obviously making it the the lack of

Trade look worse okay fine but in the immediate like just in this immediate off seon in the upcoming season it’s going to look different to have have male Bridges occupying north of 25 plus million dollars on your books versus having Jaylen green at $ 12.5 million even especially if you’re Joe S we’ve

Talked about doesn’t want to go over the luxury tax threshold and wants to keep himself open for other opportunities if you want to go get player X and you’re still stuck with at least through to the trade deadline at a minimum being very generous with the possibilities and Ben

Simmons contract right like all of these things to whatever degree you think it’s solely Shawn Mark’s decision making or the process by which they got there it just further handcuffs this team and the thing that you and I hey I’ll take the Victory lap when it feels like we kind

Of called something correctly start the rebuild get younger get rid of the money get the draft capital and start to rebuild this team if you had done this at the deadline this year right now what will we be talking about and we can talk about it you know throughout this

Episode as well we’d be talking about Jaylen green cam Thomas Noah Clowney Jaylen Wilson right you’d be talking about every young player DQ White had injured unfortunately can’t utilize him and then even the players that you have in the door right now like a Dennis Smith Jr who’s only 25 26 years old

Right Lonnie Walker who’s going through struggles now but you’d have all of this Talent underneath 25 years old and you be evaluating and assessing what do we bring in to go ahead and make this team a little bit better and what are some margin moves that we maybe can make in

The off season to continue to be a young exciting team that clearly has said we’re rebuilding We’re Young we’re going to be exciting while we do this process instead where are we we all know we’re we’re an ambiguous no- win territory tanking the way to the bottom o of the

NBA right now and you’re going to find yourself with this exact same roster as we said before this is the team next year it’s not going to look dramatically different because I don’t think that that top 10 Superstar you mentioned is going to be out there for the Brooklyn

Nets who by the way if they have Shawn marks as the GM will say I’m not going to overpay to go get that Superstar because I value my players and I value my draft assets that I have always seemingly more than I do than what I see

Out there on the market yeah like it’s perfectly said it’s perfectly said I canot I cannot I cannot say things more perfectly more times on this podcast Doug I should have spread it out for the rest of the season long way to go but I feel good about what I’ve done today

Well hilariously one of the reasons that it’s so easy to talk about in the moment is because again I hate to keep doing this thing because this doesn’t win this doesn’t win you anything right but it’s like it’s easy to talk about it here because we’ve been talking about this

We’ve mentioned this we’ve we’ve been we’ve turned blue in the face on this around the trade deadline before over the summer I we we go all the way back to the summer last trade deadline last trade deadline I mean and for sure over the summer we discussed this at the time

Where we were like this is something they should think about doing they should think about doing this like they like they should really consider and then that was when we were just making it up like I was like but hug I mean it would take a miracle it take a miracle

Houst like we’ll throw it out there but would Houston ever even consider it probably not but hey content is cont then oh my gosh it actually comes true like it actually comes true they do they do consider it and like that’s the part we’re like holy cow like do we speak it

Into existence they actually considered it and this thing that we never thought could happen so that that the reason it’s like sort of front of mind for us is that we just have been kind of talking about this and they’ve been given seemingly many chances to kind of

Dig themselves out of this like post Superstar era you can’t it’s so hard to come out of these post Superstar eras with any team and just be like a real good team again it it just doesn’t work like that like you have to expend a lot of capital bring these guys in there’s

Usually just like feelings and stuff that’s left over it’s hard it’s like why most teams would choose to reset it after that timeline they didn’t I get that there was like a few other little piece of other like just contextual pieces that went along with it except

That Houston was offering a chance to remove that context right and and kind of get back to it and they just chose not to so yeah it’s it’s honestly I I can’t think about this team really without thinking about this as long as markx is in charge because I’m

Going to constantly worry I’m gonna constantly worry that this is part of the decision-making process and it can’t be because no independent auditor would go and look at this and like think that this there was these guys were more valuable than they are because of the

Seemed as capable of especially after the Kevin Durant trade that involved M and Camp yeah I think with this is just like sort of like a work in progress like it’s hard to know until you start to see how all the pieces begin to fit together or don’t fit together right I

Think that this is I think we’ve we’ve been really complimentary of marks for a long time rightfully so like he made a ton of he built he took this organization from an absolute Ash pile and had Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving and James Harden and were Championship favorites within a much shorter timeline

Than anyone would have ever predicted right like you get a lot of credit for that frankly it’s probably it’s the thing that has him still in the in the in the gig because like that is a near impossibility and he did it the problem is that from that point on basically every

Single thing has gone wrong and at some point and at some point there’s just no more feet to lay the blame at right and like forever it was well you got a you know sort of a flighty guy and Kyrie like who can’t be trusted okay you got

Harden who asks out from every team okay well you know you get a pass for that one KD just gets upset with everything else and he left the Golden State Warriors when they would have won every Championship because okay well so markx doesn’t get all the blame right and then

It’s like all right well now you been play bringing a Ben Simmons and and it’s you know he can’t play because he’s hurt so is that totally his fault it’s like unclear you know okay well Nash wasn’t really equipped the coach and like oh you wanted to hire emay adoka but um

Adoka but you couldn’t because like this other thing at some point the list is just too long like right it’s like I get that each one of those things in a vacuum might not have been his fault he was still in charge when they all happened and the list is so

Long I I left things out that’s why though well that’s why like it so if from right now in this moment the decision tree that the Brooklyn Nets were going to go through starting this off season say there’s five key decisions that they’re going to make you

Could tell me that it’s going to be one two three four five and if Shawn Marx is the one making them versus random GMX I would say oh okay let’s see how it unfolds whereas now the second he makes the first decision it’s going to be well

Okay is he holding too hard right okay Houston comes back to the table in the summer if it’s a new GM and he they say we’re we’re not going to take that offer we believe we can build with Mel Bridges we have a plan we’re GNA get a head

Coach and XYZ okay great you’re GNA give that GM the leeway to believe he’s going to put it together whatever decision Shawn marks makes I think Shy of maybe this sounds weird this sounds bad shy of maybe saying what we said you know you need to blow this thing up get young get

As many draft piics as possible but shy of something that feels a dramatic departure from what he’s been doing and what he’s been indicating he’s going to do I think everyone’s going to sit there and second guess and presume that it’s going to go wrong presume that it’s not

Going to work out and that’s sometimes it’s just what happens very few GMS last as long as Shawn Marx has even when you’ve had pretty successful runs it’s maybe only been how tumultuous the Run has been that leaves owner Joi saying well there’s been so many ups and downs

So many Peaks and valleys I can’t always prescribe the failures to Shawn Marx but I just I don’t see how we’re going to feel confident about a choice that he makes regardless of what the decision is ultimately this offseason I I I think that’s it it’s like I think it’s when it

Gets harder and harder to see what the vision is and look may I we’ve said this many times maybe we’ll be proven wrong you know like that you know or or or let’s hold on sorry real quick do you think that we also we do know what the

Vision is the vision is they believe they can attract Superstars they’re going to bring them in this off season and this team is going to be competitive at that point I do think what you and I came to as well was not only about whether or not it’s easy to go get the

Superstar and whether they’ll be able to do that that ultimately it’s not it’s not what you think the end result is going to be which is competing you know high level playoffs top four seed I think that’s a part of the problem too here I fundamentally disagree that

Bringing in that one key player is going to take this team from where they are now maybe only winning 30 games this year to all of a sudden becoming a 50 game you know 50 win team that’s the problem here is what you’re selling me it doesn’t look like it’s actually an

Achievable goal yeah that that’s the problem right it’s like it doesn’t it’s like you I literally can’t see it and the again short of knowing that like one of these big guys is going to force his way out and specifically demand to go to the the Nets and like and and and it’s

Going to be met with agreement and they gonna have the pieces the math on this is just so hard yeah they’ll have some cap room I I don’t I don’t think they’re bring in anyone this season I think they’re waiting at all for 2025 right like they’re not going to

Bring anyone they really don’t have the ability to bring in anyone this season unless they were somehow able to trade Simmons’s contract which feels impossible and I think it’s all 2025 and I think we’re gearing up for like we’ve said many times we’re gearing up for

Just sort of another year of this like this holding pattern hoping that this you know a superstar drops from the sky in 20125 yeah and it’s what makes this stretch down the end of the season right hopefully we still have to wait for the next game to see if Noah clown he’s

Going to get the minutes we still have to wait to see if they’re going to commit to some of these developmental things that that maybe will inform the way you feel about the off season a little bit differently but when when a team is struggling and a fan base feels

Not even angry but Di disenfranchised and disengaged you need something to pull them back and you just may not get that taste until big Superstar name X comes kind of out of nowhere and and writes this ship and makes you feel like all these preceding decisions are well

Informed based on what Shawn marks has tried to sell us and and and by the way like the long-term planner like Marx might say like you just got to wait and maybe and I’m sure he sold the ownership on this side how could not like you just

You gotta wait till wait till you see what I have cooking and maybe he does maybe he does like it’s not that it’s mostly just going back like well and just to take it right back to the top here it’s just going back and looking at

These non moves once you get a little more information about it each time because every time we’ve gotten more information it just continued to get worse like it’s just yeah none of the footsteps keep leading you’re like oh that’s where the destination now I can see it you keep

Going we’re wandering deeper into the sea and we have no scuba gear and by the way just to go back through it it’s like each time you think something’s a little bit of a head scratch or whatever it’s like all we’ll trade hard for Simmons okay we got a little more information

And it was a total F right like oh um why didn’t they trade something like Seth Curry Joe Harris these guys at the trade deadline the year we got a little more information doesn’t seem like there was any good reason lost out oh why didn’t we trade Dorian we don’t really

Know and now he’s looked kind of like worse and worse and like there’s for sure and then you hear oh they’re it’s because they’re asking too much like oh that feels worse it’s like oh they got oh there was actually a deal that materialized from Houston well they

Turned it down well that one looks worse than that might will look worse than all of them by the time it’s done because since then the values going the wrong way like Jaylen Green’s value skyrocketed the Nets the value of those Nets picks is skyrocketed because they

Look so bad right and so like those and so each time you get past the point of the decision you go back you wait a little bit you take a beat and you look back you’re like it’s even worse it’s even worse than it was before and that is why

Specifically as we ended here that is why specifically it gets harder and harder to see the future because we have too many examples of each time the decision was made the thing got worse right like every every single time just when you think you’d fall into completes

Since about covering this team at the back end of the season God you got you got to love it and you got to love us frankly no no no trer words whatever said buddy all right we’re gonna have those the words of you’re the alltime great poter uh we’re gonna get out of
