Locked on to get started as you guys know you’ve heard my monotonous voice all week I’m Evan damell one of the co-hosts behind locked on Cavs and I run right down uid as well but joining me today is longtime friend of the program Jordan Christmas Jordan how you doing
Buddy doing uh you know it’s a so so week um especially in sixer world but there was some news today that will hopefully make you know my side of the talking in this conversation a little bit more cheery because it has been a monotonous season for the last two
Months and it feels like forever but you know we do what we can we just move forward and you know that’s the best way to look at it because if you look at it Cleveland is three and seven in their last 10 the Sixers are four and six in
Their last 10 Cleveland fourth in the East Philadelphia eighth maybe they’re on some type of collision course depending on how the Eastern Conference standings shake out especially with you know the news coming out from Nick nurse that he there is some optimism that Joel embi can
Play at least in the last few games of the regular season at least ramp him up for the playoffs and like on the cavf side of things Donovan Mitchell is expected to be back against the Sixers when these two teams play Friday night so just like so he’s not questionable
Anymore well at least according to Shams chania there’s the expectation he’ll play but you know JB B was COI about it and said we’ll see he’s officially listed as questionable as we are recording this and we’ll probably be a game time decision but at least for you
If embiid is back on the court before the end of the regular season does that change the trajectory a ton for the Sixers or are they going to kind of be scrapping it out in the playing tournament to kind of earn their place in the Eastern Conference
Playoffs so when you just asked that question the first thought that popped into my head was obviously yes it changes the trajectory for the Sixers because Joelle embiid is incredible but you look at where the Sixers are standings wise playing wise you know the really it’s the race for the six seed
Between the Pacers the Heat and the S um the Pacers the Heat and the Sixers and the Pacers have the six seed right now so if you’re talking about the trajectory of a deep playoff run I really don’t know the answer to that question dude I
Mean I I really there’s a lot of factors that go into this one um did get some good news today it seems Joel embiid is going to be joining the Sixers on this brief two game Road Trip uh obviously we play the Cavs tomorrow then we play the
Raptors over the weekend did not confirm if indeed was going to play in those two games uh the timeline recovery for his injury was six to eight weeks and next Tuesday would be eight weeks to the day he had his surgery so he is right it
Seems like he’s right in line it seems like he’s going to come back soon I was thinking maybe April 2nd against the Thunder or April 9th um when the Sixers have the last three games of their season at home but it seems like he is Keen to join maybe faster than expected
I don’t think embiid’s gonna play tomorrow um but he will sounds you know he’s just you know wants to duck Jared Allen and Evan Mobley I get it no but uh in all seriousness uh it seems like he’s going to be practicing a little bit um at least you
Know working his way back into shape which is the other thing how in shape is a 7 foot 280 PB man going to be after not playing basketball for multiple months what’s the team going to look like when he is reinserted into the lineup obviously stuff’s going to run
Through him again how will the other players adjust there’s a lot of factors that go into it but long long answer short I was going to say well duh changes the Sixers trajectory but now that I really think about it I really don’t know obviously they’re going to be
Better but as far as playoff wise as you noted it is a race for the six seed maybe the Cavs can do the Sixers a bit of a favor when they wrap up their second to last game at home against the Pacers and bump them down a
Little bit too just because the Pacers are such an odd team but just because they just kind of stopped trying after the winning the plan or the uh inseason tournament but more so for me it’s just fascinating because there are more parallels with the fact that like the
Cavs have been up and down Topsy tury without Donovan Mitchell I think a lot of people are very aware of that if you listen to this show on a regular basis I went on a very long rant about it actually for Thursday’s show but getting Mitchell back won’t be a seamless fit I
Think it’s going to give them a shot in the arm similarly to like when MBI comes back to the floor for the Sixers even if it’s in limited minutes and he’s not 100% like Joel embiid is the reigning MVP Donovan Mitchell is an all MV caliber player and could be in the NBA
Conversation as well if he you know just like kind of maybe played at a higher level which is harder to think just because of how out of his Gore he’s playing this year but when comparing like the remaining stretch so the Cavs play the Sixers at home and
Then they go on a lengthy road trip because the women’s final four is in Cleveland so they’re in Denver and then at Utah and then in Phoenix immediately after that and then they have a back toback against the Lakers and the Clippers before they come home to finish
The season against the Grizzlies Pacers and hornets last three games are pretty palatable I mean they yeah the last three games yeah punked by the Hornets last the other night so maybe I don’t want to say that full certainty in I did not watch that
Game yesterday but I saw the score and I was like my Lord what happened here because you guys played back to back the Hornets back to back home and then on the road yesterday the Hornets at home and then they just blew a massive lead it was
Frustrating uh think one of the more frustrating losses of the season for them but I just think imagine comparing the schedules like Philly has as you had noted Cleveland and Toronto on a mini road trip then they’re home against the Thunder which that’s tough no matter
What even if you have him beat back like that’s a tall ask just because you’re he’s going to be limited then the Sixers play the Heat that could be tough Memphis that’s pretty then you like look at this sweet spot in the schedule they have Memphis at at Memphis at San
Antonio then at home against Detroit Orlando’s such an odd team cuz like they’re just so young and athletic and just weird and so like and their defense is absolutely Elite but AB is absolutely a bit that’s the tradeoff so and then you have Brooklyn to wrap up the season
Like Philly I would say has a little bit more of like a favorable stretch Tobe bump them up to the six seed whereas for Cleveland I don’t know where they’re going to be when this ends just because they had a pretty firm lead on second SL third place the East they’ve just
Stumbled down ever so slightly just post Allstar break yeah injuries played a part in it but at this point it’s just for both of these teams it’s is their Premier Superstar the best player healthy and like how overall how healthy is this team limping into the postseason because like I think Philly could
Realistically get the six seed but also the playing tournament could be an aspect too but for Cleveland like they may not Collide at the Sixers in the first round but they may end up playing like the Knicks or the uh the magic or the Pacers or something depending on how just things
Shake out but like or even Philly if like they climb high enough but it’s just such a weird season and I think it’s just kind of interesting how there are some similarities between these two that just you can just pull examples from yeah and realistically speaking I’m trying to
Pull up the Pacer schedule right now because they have been playing a bit better since the All-Star break I really do think um while them trading buddy hee to us has really you know kind of in some ways impacted the Pacers say buddy he I I would never imagin buddy hee was
Like the entire foundation for how the Pacers like function offensively at times yeah th those goost screens and his shooting gravity and just sprinting to different parts of the three-point line really open stuff up and has really opened stuff up here in Philly even though buddy hasn’t um you know exactly
Played well the last few weeks um maybe you won’t maybe you know the Cavs won’t see that uh you know 230 balls for Maxi and Buddy hee like they did before the All-Star break but yeah I mean that’s what happens when hot take when you don’t have your best player right I mean
Donovan Mitchell’s only played five games since the All-Star break and unsurprisingly when you lose your best player your offense tends to suffer what’s really shocking to me is that their defense has just not been good the last few weeks they are uh the last two weeks they their defensive rating I
Believe is 21st or 22nd per cleaning the glass and just seems like I don’t know what I don’t know what has changed maybe you cover the team closer than I do so maybe you can figure it out but when I’m watching them I’m like there’s just not that Isaac aoro is
Still really good just awesome and as a day one Isaac aoro stockholder this season has meant something to me man but no um it it it it’s just it’s weird and also yeah Evan Mobley was out for a bit with that ankle injury as well but I
Didn’t expect the Cavs defense to just be 21st and then on top of that they their offensive rating has been 21st the last two weeks and to me that just screams obviously they don’t have their best player but it’s just it’s weird how MO and Garland go out the Cavs go on
This TW Monon stretch way where they are just one of the hottest teams in the NBA they change their identity and start shooting a lot more threes Donovan Mitchell is playmaking a bit more obviously in the absence of Garland and he was already a pretty good playmaker
For the Cavs but he just had to up his responsibilities a little bit so it’s just some of it too is just you have to chalk it up to and look fans don’t want to hear this because it’s just you’re watching every game you’re hanging your mental health basically on every game
Throughout an 82 Game season there’s just some parts of the Season where stuff like this just happens and it’s just as simple as that sometimes it just sucks for the Cavs that it came at the inopportune time and then for the Sixers it’s the same thing I mean the Sixers
Were 29 and 13 before the Golden State game where embiid got hurt they were Sixth and off offensive rating and Ninth in defensive rating and then since then the Sixers are I had it pulled up too let me pull this up the Sixers are 22nd in offensive rating and 20th in
Defensive rating since embs injury and sometimes that’s just the way your season goes stuff can just go sideways and then on top of that you don’t have DeAnthony Melton who was a pretty key starter for the first part of this year and then last year Robert Covington one
Of the players you get back at the James Harden trade you he’s been out for with this mysterious knee injury where we don’t know if he’s ever going to come back and then in true sixer fashion they really aren’t transparent or forth not forthcoming but for some reason they’re
Just really vague with timelines and recovery time and stuff like that it’s been an odd season for both teams I’d say for the Cavs though I just they’re in a way obviously they’re in a way better position than the Sixers I still think there’s a chance they can get the
Number two seed I mean you never know with the Bucks and their I know their defense has improved under Doc Rivers and they’ve fixed sort of the basics and stuff like that but you still never know with their defense just is too high variance for me to for me to
Definitively say yes they are going to finish the year with the two seed I still think the Cavs have a chance they just need to get Mitchell back on the court but with a n tendonitis thing it’s kind of tendonitis is just iffy in general like the tendonitis especially and then
You’re gonna if Mitchell does come back will he like with embiid will he become The Fringe or top six or seven MVP candidate that he was playing like this year today’s episode of lock on Cavs is brought to you by eBay Motors passion Drive and patience what brings home the

When Mitchell did come back briefly um he looked pretty sharp against the Pelicans it was his first game back it seemed like he hadn’t missed a beat it seemed like the there were some steps and some things that were functionally there and like you obviously it wasn’t perfect and
He was on a minute restriction and then after the game against Chicago uh where the Cavs leaned on him quite a bit he admitted he’s like I got to shut this back down just because like my burst and my athleticism isn’t there and like you
Said KNE tontis is so tricky and if you get PRP treatment like that’s to me kind of screams like this is more of like a pretty heavy injury for Mitchell like it’s kind of really holding him back and you have to be just transparent with it
And realistic and yeah like I don’t want to say the Cavs aren’t transparent about their injuries and they never really want to put the public pressure expectation that a player will be back sooner instead of later but right just for Cleveland’s sake like wrapping up the regular season and heading into the
Playoffs like they have to be mindful of the fact that one Mitchell’s knee is going to be very sensitive I think Max ruse’s knee is going to be sensitive too he missed almost a month I think at this point but like he looked great against the Hornets but again was on a
Restriction but Mitchell’s the Cavs will go as far as they can I believe this postseason just based on how strong Mitchell’s knee can hold him up just throughout this run like if there’s a point where like his knee just bothers him and like he loses that burst again like the Cavs Goose may
Be cooked and to answer your question about the defense it is when you point out the 20 like ranked 21st over on defense per clean the glass um it’s just some of it is injuries for sure forgot about Max too yeah well I think just for them defensively it’s more interesting
In the fact that like Dean Wade is kind of been like a really underrated Defender for them like yes he’s one he ranks out as one of the top isolation defenders in the league like he can comfortably defend threes in fours after having to do it so long like he can the
Cavs have gotten funky with it and let him play small ball five and they’ve found success with it but it’s weird just because like it’s such a narrow Gap but the Cavs have just been overwhelmingly below average just based on their talent and everyone available and like you said they they peaked or
Like they really hit a peak in January even though they lost Moy and Garland but then unfortunately it all just kind of came crumbling down and now you’re kind of seeing the after effects of it like you’re asking guys to play a lot more minutes and that results in
Injuries or like it’s clear Darius Garland still isn’t 100% And it’s really frustrating a lot of Cavs fans at this point and like I saw the comment today saying that the Cavs should bench him for Craig por Jr and I’m like wanted to pump the brakes and hit reverse on it
Just cuz yeah Garland has just an overaction that’s just that’s that’s fandoms being fans and I can’t criticize fans for being fan for fanatic for a reason but it’s just such an odd thing because this team just kind of looks listless and then when you share like those
Rankings and the numbers like it makes sense like they are just not playing very hard on offense and like it’s hard for them to execute just because either they’re lacking Dean Wade in the shooting like they just got ma streu back and I think that’s invaluable or
Like Sam Merill has a lot of high variants like he can have a night like he against the Hornets where he hits five of 11 from three-point range and those are his only shot attempts for the night off the bench and like he’s almost fourth all time in bench three-pointers
Made in a single season just like but then those other nights were like he’ll go over seven but he’ll keep shooting it and that’s what you want him to do and like you have to deal with that variance but like it’s just tricky because I think weade really is like a puzzle
Piece that kind of he’s a connector piece for both ends of the floor for the Cavs and like they pretty badly but it’s just tricky because you also I can understand the general frustration too because like even with no Donovan Mitchell of course like he’s the the
Cav’s best and most important player um or like you still three yeah like you still have Allen you still have Moy who’s a little limited still but you also have Darius Garland and like I I just can’t figure out where things are going wrong just because like you said Cleveland loses
Two their top players in Garland and Moy and they didn’t miss a beat they just kept on keeping on and they were like one of the hottest teams in basketball for over a month yeah and then you would think in theory if the reverse were to
Happen they would at least you know they would at least you know be able to Tre because I was looking they were like they they were 8 and 12 since the All-Star break or uh or8 and 12 at least in their last 20 games and it’s it it’s
Puzzling to me sometimes and yeah Darius Garland someone who you know we’ve me me and you have talked about him like I I love Darius Garland and I think with him and Moy you know I know uh you know Cavs owner Dan Gilbert said something today or intimated that he’s confident in you
Know keeping Mitchell on an extension or whatever but like let’s just put that aside you with Garland and Moy you guys have a center and a point guard combo that is really young that you can build stuff out of and then you have Jared Allen of course and then Donovan
Mitchell and that you know just having guys like that t Poole guys like that to kind of you know fill out the rest of your team or build out the rest of your team you would think if you know one or two go out you can lean back on the
Other two and it worked for you know uh Mitchell and Allen have you know when Moy and Garland went out but the other way around it’s the results haven’t been as even and obviously Mo this is like his third game back from his ankle injury so uh but even before
Then and even still like I just feel like the Cavs should be playing better and yeah you’re by the way you’re right about Dean Wade because that shoulder injury really screwed him up last year and I liked Dean Wade when the Cavs had you know the triple big lineup of Markin
In you know uh Kevin Love and uh Jared Allen and l l junor once told us on this show they had no idea what they were doing but they tried it and then lo and behold it became their entire identity yeah exactly but you know whenever
Marinin was out Dean Wade would step in and I’m just like oh Dean Wade’s a nice player and then last year it just kind of went off the rails so I’ve been happy for his Resurgence this year and him and aoro especially Off the Bench is like a
Defensive Wing tandem it’s like oh you could do a lot of stuff with these guys I think it’s just injuries inconsistent play but you can’t lose a big lead to the Hornets it it’s the Hornets man like the Hornets aren’t the Memphis Grizzlies where yeah the Grizzlies look like an
Easy win on the schedule but they play really hard and they have some young hungry young players on that team um by the way for on the Hornet side I just a quick aside I love Brandon Miller I absolutely love he’s going to be an awesome awesome player and I still like
L too I so I would keep that as my future back cour but um yeah it’s like I said that’s just the way the season goes sometimes man and the Sixers are going through that right now and I could tell you all about the ups and downs of every
Player on the roster and stuff but it does feel like when your team goes through a stretch like this it’s like you’re watching the game in like this droning autopilot mode which has kind of been me since obviously I pay attention and look at little details and stuff but you’re
Watching these games knowing more likely than not you’re going to not win and that causes like this autopilot effect that’s not fun today’s episode of lockon Cavs is brought to you by Nissan are you the kind of driver who likes to push things further ever wonder what Adventures

Moments of this game or this episode let’s talk more about the fact that the Cavs do play the Sixers and for me Donovan Mitchell status is up in the air we’ll see if he does or does not play but the Cavs and the Sixers have gone blow for blow with one another lately
And I wonder how they handle Tyrese Maxi especially just because like he is the central Focus for the Sixers now and um you you have to be mindful of just how you defend him and kind of manage him and with how lackluster Cleveland has been on um defense just lately like
That could be like one of the toughest assignments and if Mitchell can’t play like I would assume if you’re the Cavs you match him him as an maxi minute for minute with Isaac aoro and just really hope that aoro can shut his water off like he has for most point guards in the
League yeah and um you know the defense on Maxi thing is very key here one just advice for the Cavaliers and what Cavs fan should hope for you should hope the Sixers would want to run stuff through Tobias Harris because that has been a pretty bad spot for the Sixers Tobias Harris has
Forgotten how to play basketball because that’s the other main weapon besides Maxi since embiid’s been gone um so if you want to try to shut Tyrese Maxi’s water off maybe have funnel some maybe funnel make the Sixers funnel some of the offense through to bias but no um on
The Maxi Point um I feel like well one I feel like the Cavs should win this game key operative word should because they didn’t beat the Sixers you know before the All-Star break when uh you know the Sixers didn’t have him be and Buddy heeld was like in his second or third
Game with the Sixers or whatever and Maxi and Buddy hee were just going berserk especially in that fourth quarter and and Maxi has seen I think one of the if I were to draw a silver lining with this embiid injury is that it has accelerated Maxi’s growth like
Crazy and he was already having a season that was beyond any reasonable Maxi fans expectations right and so with embiid going down Maxi has seen all types of coverages and I’m not I’m not putting him in the same category as these guys stature wise or whatever but he has seen
The Damen Willard the Stephen Curry type of Defense where on a screen and roll it’s just two to the ball automatically and maybe that’s because some of the Personnel too because like I said there have been other injuries to this team to key guys besides embiid so teams are
More incentivized to play Maxi that way but I do think because Maxi is one of the best Shooters on the planet one of the deepest three point shooters just in terms of range in the league and being one of the five fastest guys in the NBA that’s just a nasty combination for a
Guard to have and teams are selling out to that because if you let ma go under maxi will shoot if you go over the screen Maxi will just blow by you and he’s struggled with that at times this year but I think for the most part he’s
Passed all the tests like he had some Growing Pains he’s had some shooting slumps because he’s been shooting more off the dribble as opposed to off the catch when uh you know James Harden was here and you know Ben Simmons was here but now Maxi has the ball more and he’s
Learning and playing more minutes under Nick nurse um he has been you know trying to find his way doesn’t have the legs a lot of time or doesn’t have the legs as much probably as he’s been used to in previous seasons and he’s had to fight through that so I think how the
Cavs guard Maxi will be interesting they’re probably going to start Isaac Coro on him um I imagine Evan Mobley is going to be he might be guarding to bias Harris but honestly Moy should be roaming off Tobias Harris a little bit because he’s just not a offensive threat
At all right now I know he had two good games against the Clippers but outside of that for the last like month and a half Tobias has been absolutely rough like this is the by far the worst I’ve seen him play and I’ve watched him play for five years
Amazingly um so that that part will be interesting Glen Rivers is hurting you still even when he’s not there because he was the he was the Harris Whisperer hey I mean look that I will give doc some credit for some things but as you could see on my Twitter account I
Am one to not give Doc Rivers Credit on a lot of things and I think he’s overrated at a lot of things but that’s neither here nor there um so how the Cavs will guard the Sixers will be interesting I don’t think they have to worry about Buddy hee as much in this
Game because he hasn’t been playing well and I think Nick nurse has kind of lost a little bit of trust in him he’s been coming off the bench more and he’s been opting to close with three point guard lineups like campaign Kyle Lowry and Maxi that’s where my season has gotten
To at this point by the way and um so and then I expect the Cavs to just pound the glass because Mo Bomba for you know the one out of every 15 games where he doesn’t play and I hate to use the word but soft he he doesn’t
Attack off he doesn’t attack rebounds he hopes the rebounds will come to him and when he is shock the rebound doesn’t come to him he realizes he’s behind the play and then the other team’s going the other way or you know um I expect so I
Expect the Cavs to win this game I really do um but Nick nurse will always have his guys play hard they will always play really good defense even if the offense right now is just subpar and so I mean I say the Cav should win but we
Could very well just get a dog fight tomorrow and that wouldn’t shock me no it wouldn’t shock me either and real quick just like in third a minute or less who do you think is the biggest X Factor for Cleveland heading into this matchup just because for me I think it’s
On Philly side of things outside of Maxi it is Kelly UB who has been on a bit of a tear lately and like he could be a guy who just has the spacing and just kind of the length to disrupt the flow of what Cleveland’s trying to do especially with so many
Guys on minute limits Jared Allen I think Jared Allen has to uh I not Darius Garland’s gonna have a role to play too he has to to go back at Maxi but if you’re just talking about controlling the game and the glass and dominating a soft Sixers front Court I’d probably sa Jared
Allen I I think that is a very firm pick and a fun one and yeah it could be a dog fight it could be a blowout it could be you know an offensive guard Master Class between Maxi and maybe Garland gets out of his slump in this one but we’ll see
It is going to be an interesting game no matter what Jordan on the way out you have any pluga bles you want to share yes so I have my well you can see my uh Twitter name under here as at Jordan xmus but you can also subscribe
To the sly Hooper YouTube channel Sly Hooper with an H it’s like Sly Cooper but you take out the C put in the H um I did a video recently on giannis’s somehow forgotten MVP candidacy um and you know the basically the video 10-c summary I basically think
Giannis should be talked about more as a tier one MVP candidate and not tier two because think I have listened to a lot of basketball content that has them in tier 2 and I just think that’s insane to me especially when you look at the statline that Giannis has been putting
Up this year and the Bucs are still winning despite a rocky season so I did something on that I’m when this episode drops tomorrow um I am hopefully by tomorrow I will have uploaded a video about how deonis sabonis has been having probably the most underrated season in
The NBA here in where I live right now in Sacramento um so I’m going to be looking to highlight some bonuses just really awesome and consistent season because somehow he did not make the All-Star team but we’ll probably make an all-nba team this year and that is
Bonkers to me as well um so and I’ve done Cavs videos in the past and stuff so Cavs fans can go check that out some of the listeners are familiar with me I’ve been on this this is my fifth time on the show now so um shout out to you
Guys and uh yeah subscribe to the subscribe to the Channel yeah check out Jordan’s work at Sly Hooper I still think it’s like such a clever pun on Sly Cooper if you’re a gamer you get it but Chris and I will be back I think Monday to talk about the Cavs nuggets
