Today we are at that time of the year we are in these kinds of games we are getting to the playoffs where the Stars step up where your best players beat defenses that know what’s coming this is the point that the magic been trying to get to the point that we’ve been eager

To see the point that’s going to teach this team so much and guess what we are in the playoffs already to some degree you know it’s not the same obviously you’re not in the series it’s not maybe the same intensity all the time but the magic are in the playoffs they’re playing play

They are playing playoff caliber teams who are desperate for wins the urgency is higher and the magic have to meet that urgency in a lot of ways they have and we’re going to get to this point because I do want to make sure that we at least consider a positive spin to everything

That we we at least consider uh the good that that’s happening out there right now because there is there is some good no doubt about it but by the same token sorry I have to grab myself by the same token everything starts at the top that’s how this goes we’ve been

Waiting a decade for a star player to come bring this team out of the Wilderness to get this team to the playoffs and so before we get to anything else let’s give that credit the magic are where they are today for a lot of reasons and Pao

Benero is one of the big ones whatever struggles he is going through now are probably momentary and at worst Growing Pains necessary mistakes on his road to becoming a perennial Allstar but there’s no doubt about it the magic are not getting what they need from their star and if you listen to our

Podcast on Thursday after the game against the Warriors I took P to task for some of the decisions he made late in the game we got to take him to task again for that as well because with the magic after Pao gave the magic a one-point lead with

About two minutes to play about minute 20 to play he made a series of mistakes that that cost the team the game after Jonathan Isaac came over and made an incredible block on Paul George with the magic up by one Orlando had the chance to expand their lead and so Pao

Set up at the top of the key got the switch on to James Harden that he was looking for drove on him and had the ball knocked away that led to a fast break that led to a mismatch that led to a Kawhi Leonard shot over Jaylen sugs a

Very tough shot again we’re we’ll we’ll get to some positive spin here later okay magic down one time to get the lead back Palo again sets up on the wing gets to switch on James Harden that he wants dribbles into the lane stops picks up his dribble too soon tries to

Kick back out James Harden is able to deflect the pass get the steal Clippers have the ball again with about 3 second shot clock difference Orlando plays some really good defense and Paul George hits a tough shot over Jonathan Isaac for the basket and a three-point lead Orlando

Did get a decent look for fron Vagner for three off the inbounds with about five seconds left the ball was knocked out of bounds they had a second and a half to get another three they got a deep three from fron Vagner not a bad look again I like their execution on

Those two plays although fron was off balance on both and the magic lose 197 We cannot put this entire loss on Palo vaner let’s make that perfectly clear there are plenty of other moments and plenty other things that are going on but the fact of the matter is the

Magic are not getting enough from their star player it’s not just about late in games the magic are not getting enough from their star player in key moments throughout the game 23 points 15 of them in the third quarter helped keep the magic afloat but eight for 18 shooting

One for six from three he took his he took more shots from three six than he did in the restricted area five that’s a problem he has to get to the basket that’s more important six or seven from the line is good eight rebounds is good but two assists and seven

Turnovers Dan Caro was forcing a lot of things was looking for fouls that weren’t and haven’t been coming and ultimately looking to the refs for help which he’s done a lot lately poo Beno is just off right now and he recognizes it give him the credit for recognizing the problem recognizing

That hey he has to be better especially from the jump again pow scored 15 of his 23 in the third quarter carrying the magic through the third quarter getting them back in the game after they fell behind by nine but something’s off about him because it’s not just about

That it’s B Caro averaging only 20 points per game in the last three games it’s Paulo shooting 21 for 53 39.6% during this three- game losing streak it’s that he’s three for 19 15.8% from three during this losing streak it’s about the decisions he’s making I mentioned it after the game on

Wednesday the pull up three with the magic down by three in plenty of time to attack and get a stop a bad decision that Golden State ultimately turned into a five-point lead it’s doing that and settling for threes throughout the course of the game with the magic leading a little bit in the

Third quarter they gave up a quick run at the at the end of the quarter to fall behind by eight again it’s little decisions throughout the course of a game that matter to and right now because Paulo’s also turning the ball over a lot he leads the

Team with 3.6 turnovers per game he’s had a lot of turnovers a lot of turnovers the magic as a team have had a lot of turnovers but this is where Pao has to be better it’s about playing with composure it’s about playing with poise it’s about

Making the right play and yes I’m gonna give him this credit he is dealing with a lot of pressure not just pressure in the form of we expect a lot out of him but pressure in that teams are throwing two three guys at him like he is he’s playing sped up right

Now and the magic aren’t going to win if Pao is sped up if Pao plays at his Pace if he’s patient waits to see what the defense is going to give him he’s going to make the right play a lot you know he makes some mistakes here in there still

But he will make the right play a lot but when he’s fed up when he’s trying to do too much when defenses are able to kind of get under him that’s when we have game like this one that’s when we have games like Friday night’s game and that’s where Pao makes critical

Mistakes a lot of this is Growing Pains like I’m sorry like a lot of this is Growing Pains we know Pao is good we know he will deliver in big moments and part of delivering in big moments is sometimes you fail and you just have to

Get back up on the horse and do it again that’s what expected of you of him that’s what’s that’s what we expect from Pao but the plain fact is this the magic aren’t going to win very much if Paulo plays poorly they can survive you know they

Fought they in this game they had their chance to win this game so it’s we’ll do the positive spin at the end of the show but the magic are not getting blown out here they’re not far and we can clearly see that they’re not far because we’re pointing at mistakes

That they made yes the Clippers made a lot of tough shots at the end of the game um the magic played good enough defense again to when you hold that team like LA to 100 points you’re doing something right but everything as we get closer and closer to the playoffs everything

Day let’s run through the final box scores of the Orlando match fall to the LA Clippers 100 to 97 I want to I’m an optimist we’re going to do The Optimist take here at the end um but look like I said everything always starts with your

Best players um there is no denying it there’s no doubt about it everything for your team starts with your best players Pao banero 23 points eight for 18 shooting one for six from three um seven turnovers eight rebounds that’s you know look Pao carried the team through a lot of the

Game got them through the third quarter gave them a real chance to get back in the game just found some energy and some juice that that really charged the Kia Center crowd a little bit um but just backto back really bad games and honestly the Sacramento game wasn’t that

Good either so three straight games again and I you know non- coincidentally the magic losed them three straight games after that triple double where poo struggled to shoot but still made such a huge impact on the game three straight games with the man aren’t getting what they need out of

Their best player and Pao said after the game and I credit I’ll credit him a lot very mature press conference facing the media after making the mistakes that that were made in this game um you know again just just showing us you know that he gets it you know that he gets the

Responsibility he has and what it means to be the face of the franchise um you know he he said you know he’s got to be better he said you know he’s got to come out stronger with a faster start and you know I’m going to hold him to it uh I

Expect him to start the game off hot against the Grizzlies on Saturday um I expect A Better Effort from him Saturday hopefully Duke winning makes him feel better because you know my bracket’s done now um P we know what Palos escapable and it’s a long season you go through ups

And downs and this may be an unfortunate down period for him but he’s been fairly you know he said it too like he’s been fairly consistent all year he knows he can play better and so he’s got to get out of his head whatever is going on um

And you know you know hopefully it’s not anything personal but whatever’s going on Paulo’s got to lock in here because we are in playoff mode Saturday is it must win game now the magic went one and three in these middle middle games they’ve got to close this home stand

With two wins a four and four homeand is unacceptable magic got to get to five and three now these are two must- win games before the magic finish the season on the road with five of their final seven games um they got to take care of their business Saturday they got to take

Care of their business Monday um and that that starts with poo it starts too with fron voder fron had another really difficult game 13 points five for 13 shooting 0 for three from three again two of those attempts at the end of the game so five for 11 um if you take out

Those two attempts at the end three for four from the foul line three rebounds two steals for him and a block um I thought fron did a really good job getting to the basket he knows he’s not shooting particularly well he is probably more willing to pass up

Three-point shots than he was early ear in the season probably more than he needs to be um but he defenses still consider him enough of a threat that they close out pretty hard on him and he can get space and he can pump fake and

Get to the basket off of the off of that um I I did like how Fran’s got to the basket he overcooked some layups missed some shots around the basket um and again just it it’s it’s been difficult to get him involved and it’s been difficult for him

To you know because it’s essentially he’s just shooting at The Rim now you know he doesn’t shoot a ton of mid-range shots he’s not hitting his threes so all of his shots have to come at the rim and that’s really hard to do um and so frons

Is fron is missing part of his game and the magic be able to survive it all year I mean this isn’t anything new he’s shooting sub 30% from three this year we all hope that it’s an outlier season for him from there because we know what he’s

Capable of doing from Deep um but again you can’t have a game where your two best players are struggling to shoot for most of the game um especially against a team like Clippers with so much Firepower um and and requires so much attention on defense and fron played a

Really good defensive game so I want to give him that credit too um but the magic again like everybody has to be better it’s it’s it’s that simple Jaylen Suggs was solid to 15 points six for 14 shooting two for four from three five assists for him three steals two blocks

Again just a maniac he was everywhere excellent defense on James Harden tonight um he got the call on James Harden did a great job staying down on him did a great job avoiding the step backs and the bity fouls that James Harden likes to do um you know again I

Think the officials are not falling for James Harden falling after every shot and and trying to draw the foul that way um the officials are burying their whistles here you know Orlando had 15 free throw attempts La had 12 um so two teams that usually do a very good job

Getting the foul line did not get to foul line very much in this game um Suggs had an excellent defensive honestly like we’ll get to some of the defensive issues here in a minute um Orlando again like Wednesday playing a star player you know some things were loose but overall great defensive game

For the magic they you know all you can ask for from a defense is to give you a chance to win and the defense these last three games have given the magic a chance to win they’ve played above their maybe they didn’t in the Sacramento game

But it wasn’t far from it they played above their average defense in both in these last two games for sure so the defense ain’t the problem for the magic right now it’s turnovers again Pao had seven Orlando had 17 as a team it’s three-point shooting it’s shooting overall it’s finishing at The Rim

Orlando was 25 for 48 at The Rim 50 points not bad it was very lagging early on they found themselves in a deficit because they couldn’t make a shot at The Rim it’s these things that matter and and I know a lot of magic fans will point to wendo Carter wendo Carter had

An extremely quiet game two points one for three shooting over one from three did have five rebounds um just a really quiet game from him against like the gigantic centers like aita zubas and zubas has given him a lot of problems in his career it does feel like Wendell can

Can disappear a little bit um the magic were running a switching scheme so let’s talk about the defense a little bit more the magic were running a switching scheme they swap they switched essentially one through five um and so that Drew Wendell away from the basket

And that that put a lot of bad matchups on the floor um if I have you know again the defense was generally fine um again the shots that they made down the stretch really well contested but because the magic were switching Kawai went matchup hunting a little bit um Pao

Was the initial matchup on him Kawai attacked Pao like crazy if he didn’t like that matchup he’d switch Jaylen Suggs on him and look Jaylen Suggs is game he’s a great defender Kawai is just shooting over the top of Jaylen Suggs there’s very little jayen sugs can do to

Defend that and on go kaw’s goahead basket it was a switch in in transition with sugs on him he back sugs down you knew he was going to turn over the opposite shoulder uh and and you get this there just nothing sugs can do about that there’s nothing really anyone

Can do about it but some size might have helped on him kawhai finishes with 29 Points 12 for 21 shooting three for six from three 11 rebounds five assists so a really really strong game from Kawai he did have three turnovers Orlando I think Orlando’s defense went through stretches

There were stretches where they were really good really disruptive able to get blocks deflections prevent those kickouts prevent the dump down to the dunker spot and then there were long stretches where the magic really struggled to cover zubas on the offensive glass really struggled to get out to

Three-point line and look the Clippers play a lot of one-on-one basketball um you know they kind of take their turns with each of their scores um the magic did a good job generally in those one-on-one matchups but they’re gonna make some shots you know Paul George is

Gonna make a shot here or there kawii Leonard’s gonna make a lot of those shots he’s an expert at making no shots um and so Orlando had a good defensive game plan it was mostly executed well um you know again they gave up they gave up only 15 points in the fourth quarter

Like they they the defense’s job is to give your offense a chance to win they did that and and did a great job of that 22 points off 17 turnovers um was a big factor in the game Orlando was swarming on defense in the fourth quarter really

Felt like Orlando was gonna pull this one out but you know they took a five-point lead Midway through the the fourth quarter Clippers call a timeout Paul George comes out makes a shot magic get a bad basket I think it was a poo shot that I did not like they come back

Down in transition Paul George gets a three tie game and and now we’re tied for the final four minutes um you knew it was a game at that point it felt like Orlando had a chance to pull away Clippers come out of that timeout come

Back in the game so um again like wendo was just a little invisible um and you know I think he gets a little bit cons absorbed by a player like zubas he can’t quite stretch him all the way out of the paint um and that you know again maybe

The magic are just not using Wendell the way to maximize because he’s he’s shooting so much more from the perimeter and not working to post as not working to paint and interior as much um so you know maybe there’s something to consider there Gary Aris had a solid game back

From injury eight points three for six shooting one for three from three um Off the Bench the magic got 12 points for Mo vager a lot of that in the fourth quarter six for six for 10 shooting nine rebounds including six offensive rebounds just super active around the

Basket Mo got the call to finish a game just really did a great job um being around the basket making things happen putting pressure on the Clippers defense just rolling into space just if there’s if there’s been anything that I think Mo Vagner and to some extent Goa baz has

Proven a strong roller is going to go a long way for this team there’s someone who just attacks and rolls hard to the basket with passing and shooting that the magic do have from the mid-range and and the playmaking they have at their size so something to consider as we look

To the offseason um uh Caleb Houston had eight points three for four for shooting two for three from three Cole Anthony three for10 shooting two for five for eight points made a couple threes really you know he didn’t shoot the ball well in the second half but I thought he really

Carried the team through the second quarter kept them in that game kept it from getting out out of hand and giving the magic a little bit of platform to jump back into this one so um again just it was a tough game um no other way around it just like the last the

Previous two came down to some shot making came down to plays at the end came down to the magic just you know just needing that little bit more and and that’s the part that’s missing and and that’s why I think it’s really important for this next message I’m

Going to say as bad as this feels as tough as these losses feel and as big as again as big as they feel because of the level of opponents this is not a cause for alarm this isn’t a cause for panic because if the magic stay the

I I I hear people be critical of me on this and and I’m fine taking this criticism I like to view things from a positive perspective um I like to see the good in things and believe in the good in things and you know try not to

Leave things too down because you know you’re always going to learn something you’re always going to grow something and you know anger just is just it’s not a useful emotion it just it doesn’t solve problems um look I I I’m not g to sit here and say that these losses are

Okay um it you know for this team to be what it wants to be it needs to win games like these and what’s frustrating is these last three losses all feel like losses that are more about the magic than they are about the team they faced credit to Sacramento Credit to Golden

State Credit to the Clippers they won the games not taking the not not not taking those wins away from them at all but each of those games feels like it’s more about the magic the loss of the Kings was about the Magic’s four three-point shooting the loss of the

Warriors was about the Magic’s um poor decision- making down the stretch as well as poor shooting throughout the game this loss was again about the turnovers and decision- making late all thing and and Golden State loss also about Miss free throws all things the magic can fix all things that are about

Themselves and we should hold this team to a higher standard don’t get me wrong we should hold this team to the standard of they can be the four seed they can be the three seed I think they should I think again every game they play the

Rest of the season the magic should feel like they can win there is no game where they have to play 100% perfect to win they can make mistakes and still win they are that good they are good enough to have a margin for error but the margins for these games are

Small and right now you know the coin flip that is a close game is not coming up in their favor and they have to figure out how to get there but that’s the thing the way to get there is not through some massive change it’s not through a lineup change

You know maybe maybe you play and Isaac a little bit more I’ll I’ll grant that um it’s not by doing anything different it’s by doing everything virtually the same it’s by understanding why you’re losing these games and fixing those problems but understanding that you are still in these games you still have a

Chance to win am I concerned about the magic playing playoff teams no they beat Denver twice this year they beat Boston they they they can win big games they lost to the Kings on a foul call with got you know who who remembers how much time left not that much time left they

Lost to the Warriors because Steph Curry had to go on an 80 run at the end of the game they had a one they were they had a shot to take the lead with 240 to play they lost this game on two ridiculously tough Shots by kawh Leonard and Paul

George really tough shot maker making tough shots that’s what they do and you can live if a losses on makes or misses I I was fine with the with the loss of the Kings less fine with the loss of the Warriors but whatever not you know I’m not cool with this loss

This game magic should have won and they should have won because they’re very clearly correctable mistakes the turnovers missed free throws mooger missed a pair of free throws that would would have been huge in this game really uh not momentum swinging but a big moment in the game

Um I think fron voger also or Pao missed a free throw late two um that made it a one-point game where you’re kind of swinging in and out of the league lead which you know I do think that matters um the magic can correct all these mistakes and they are capable of

Correcting them they’re still playing incredible defense they’re still fighting and scratching and clawing to make all these games close to give themselves the chance to win they are still doing so many things right even though they are still they are doing so many things wrong even though there are

Still so many correctable mistakes that this team has to resolve and look some of it is endemic to the roster the turnovers have been a problem all year the misf free throws have been a problem all year the lack of shooting has been a problem all year some of these things

The match will have to address in the off season but they know they have enough to win and so how are the magic going to break this three- game losing streak how are the magic going to get themselves right fend off the Indiana Pacers now one game behind them for in Sixth and

Get back into the race for fourth they’re two games back of two two games back in New York two and a half back of Cleveland for third how are they going to do that they’re G to commit to what they do what they do well they’re going

To get to the paint for 50 points in the paint tonight they’re gonna play this incredible physical aggressive defense that they play they’re going to know that they are doing a lot of things right and it is just being more focused in the first quarter making better decisions in the third quarter making

The right plays and the right shots in the fourth quarter to maintain momentum it’s going to be these little things that determine their success and it’s not going to take much they’re tipping on the edge every game is balanced on the edge going going going one way or the other and it’s not

It doesn’t take much to tip it in your favor and that has to be the message as disappointing as frustrating as maybe unacceptable I don’t know if unaccept unacceptable feels too strong but as disappointing as these losses are and knowing that the magic let these go that still means they had them in

Their grasps that still means means they are capable of winning these games that it’s just one or two plays that’s deciding it one way or the other the magic are good enough to win I’m not concerned about their ability to beat good teams I’m concerned about their experience I’m concerned

About their precision and their execution but I’m not concerned that they can win these games because they can they’ve shown it to us the last three nights because again the losses were on them and so the trick now and the the the task now is to understand that and stay the

Course keep believing keep executing keep having that faith in each other because these three games do not make the season there three games out of the 73 this team has played there’s nine games left 73 games tells me this team can win 73 games tells me this team is good

Enough to win these kinds of games and they’re going to do it again by doing what they’ve done the past 73 games they’re good enough and a three-game losing streak shouldn’t change that having said that Saturday’s game against Memphis is a must-win game cannot lose games to Memphis at this

Time of year sorry Memphis Monday’s game against Portland is a must-win game to go five and three on this home stand is vital four- four is not acceptable we’re not a 500 team the magic need to go five and three on this home stand they need
