The Pelicans have got to figure out something to fix the problem with the center position and the good news is the answers could already be on the team I’ll tell you what the pels can do to get back to winning ways in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans let’s

10,000 other Pelicans fans on YouTube as well so let’s get into this this game again lost by the Pelicans pretty much in the first quarter they actually outscored the Phoenix Suns in the second half but it was really that early quarter that just doomed them they lost that one

46-28 they really struggled and it just led to a bunch of bad things happening here and it was with the way it really started with the way that the Phoenix Suns wanted to defend Zion Williamson and this comes from the fact that the Pelicans have as we’ve been talking

About this weekend for a couple of weeks a problem with the center position and as I’ve said in yesterday’s shows I said if you talk to me at the arena of the lockdown pelan stickers don’t be shy to come up and say hi if you see me running

Around there I’ll have those for the next two games as well you know the center position is a problem and there really isn’t a true answer to that on on the team right now and we’ll talk about ways they can kind of counter it in this segment and the next segment too because

There are some things but you saw it and it was summed up by a possession that was in the third quarter here and I tweeted about it during the game and you know it was I got to find it here as I pull up the Tweet because it actually

Had all of the play-by-play here there was Zion Williamson in the second half on the right block Kevin Durant is defending him they’re out there with jonis valunas on the court Yousef nurkic is defending Jonas valunas the starting center for the Phoenix Suns valunas is on the three-point line but nurkic is

Basically just in the paint waiting for Zion to attack they did this all game no matter who was the center for the team whether it was Larry NS Jr or Yousef nurkic basically the Phoenix Suns had no respect for either of them and so used the guy defending him to then shade Zion

Williamson as well so when Zion goes to make a move he runs into not only that Defender nurkic and Durant but then a third guy kind of shading over and it just turns into a turnover because there’s nothing for anyone to do in this play Jonas valun is Dove and tried to

Attack on a cut and Zion tried to pass him the ball but there are too many arms in the way that same play could have happened basically you know if Larry Nance Jr had been out there would have been the same thing right one of the

Things you saw in this game was the Pelicans were at times kind of reduced to yonas V chunis or Larry n Jr taking three fre that’s just giving the opponent what they want anything that doesn’t have Zion attacking the basket right now or a Trey Murphy three-point attempt or a CJ

McCullum 3 not one of those mid-range Runners floaters teardrops that aren’t falling is a win for the defense right and early on in this game with the way they were just building a wall against Zion Williamson it took him out of the game and the Pelicans lost any sort of

Aggression in that first quarter and they didn’t really regain it till about Midway through the third Zion in 10 minutes of action went one for three now he had three assists cuz they would get him the ball and they would pass he pass out often going to Trey who went three

Or four from deep in there but you need a little bit more you need Zion to also attack the basket if it’s opponents just shooting jumpers or Pelicans just shooting jump jumpers particularly when it’s guys like Dyson Daniels who did make his three Orlando Dan Jr making his

Three that they took there that’s a win for the opponent and that’s not what you want you know so not having the aggression was disappointing a way you can kind of counter that is one keep spreading the ball around making your three-point shots but the Pelicans did

In the first quarter they were six for 11 didn’t matter you know they they still lost because they weren’t taking as many threes as the opponent and when they weren’t taking threes they weren’t really scoring and that was part of the problem here they shot better from three

Than they did from the field overall that’s a bad sign for things for the Pelicans in the first quarter you need that aggression so if they’re going to build wall go and break that wall down just I don’t know take a couple of times to just you

Know if you’re Zion run into it run into it and see if you can get the foul call rather than having zero aggression like he did in this one and once he started to get going that’s when things opened up he finished with 13 free throws they

Were willing to call fouls but he didn’t have one free throw attempt in the first quarter you know he got some in the second quarter but then he had nine in the third and fourth in the second half that’s what we needed to see and he

Didn’t have that early and it was part of why the Pelicans got into that hole they needed him to carry the team for whatever reason it just wasn’t quite working and it led to a mess but it also highlights the center position being a problem this is how teams are going to

Defend the Pelicans going forward right there’s positives for Jonas munis there’s positives for Larry n Jr too but they also have significant minuses attached to them and there’s not really a way to find the kind of right balance of how you need to use them right in

This one Jonas funis wasn’t overall very effective I thought neither was Larry an Jr though their runs came in general more often with Larry on the court than with JV and honestly it was maybe best when they ran with Zion Williamson at the five we saw them do this against the

Boston Celtics and it made a little bit of Headway with all of that you know you saw them do this in the fourth quarter as well and I’ll be able to see the lineup numbers and everything tomorrow I don’t have them up just yet and we can see if that lineup is

Starting to work but I think this is something they need to do more of Zion of the five at least some of the spacing is there in the fourth quarter when he started to kind of take over that’s what you wanted to see he went to the line eight

Times that’s perfect right he was getting guys in foul trouble he was three six from the field five of eight from the free throw line that’s the type of play you want to see and need to see from Zion Williamson now you got to make some threes they didn’t do that really

During that stretch and that’s a problem problem more on that in a minute but overall you started to see that gain some Traction in work and look if the center position is going to be a problem for New Orleans you need to do something and it might just be playing Zion at the

Five here limited sample size but at least it’s showing something better than the zero you got kind of in the beginning of this game you know the concern about going with Zion at the five and I want to get into this here is rebounding right like that seems to be

The concern the scary part but I don’t think it’s bad as you might think let me talk about that actually coming up next we’ll look at the rebounding of Zion at the five do you need to play uh Jonas malunis for the rebounding is Larry an Jr the reason they’re not getting boards

They just can’t they don’t really they just don’t have an answer like it’s it’s really that simple right sometimes you can have a problem that doesn’t have a solution so for everyone screaming play JV play Larry Nance Jr they’ve tried that neither’s working neither’s working it’s as simple as that

Right again they have moments where they might look okay be okay but neither of them are the answer to what this is and you can see how it just kind of mck up everything the Pelicans are trying to do it it just kind of spreads from there it

Impacts Zion which then impacts the rest of the team which then impacts other stuff it’s all those things that’s not a good position to be in so the Pelicans don’t have a ton of answers just at the center spot there’s no one player but there are things you can

Do that are going to help you and the Pelicans need to start to make some of these changes right they brought in James bgo to kind of be the offensive coordin for the team but would you say that that has truly worked they’re definitely not as bad as offensively as

They were last year and they run into they have some games when they look really good the defense to offense is very much a thing but when you have an opponent that’s making shots and look Bradley Beal was making some shots Kevin Durant was making some some shots and

More importantly Devon Booker went off another 52 points because that’s what this dude does against New Orleans more on that in the next segment here when we kind of talk about aggression and defense you know when guys are making shots like that you’re inbounding the ball and they’re back and set now you

Have to play in the half court so you need to have something and the Pelicans just don’t do that a ton it’s really strange that you know a lot of it’s not really strange a lot of their offenses get Zion the ball let him going get

Going downhill or get him the ball on the low block let him draw a double team and then kick out for catch and shoot threes but you have players that can do more than that look I don’t mind when CJ McCullum takes some of those pullup

Jumpers when he gets the ball or brings it up and then just rips a shot because you need that you need to keep a defense honest that way same when Trey Murphy does it I think I think those are all good but in this game Jordan Hawkins got

More run than we had seen from him in the past he went one of two from three you know he’s a movement shooter why is he just being parked in the corner instead of running him through off ball screens so Zion has the ball you have someone set a screen for Jordan Hawkins

To Spring him for a more open look right in this game when the Phoenix on took 47 three-point attempts that is more than half of their shots here and they went 18 for 47 and you take just 27 so 20 fewer attempts you make 11 of them

That’s a difference of seven that’s 21 points 21 points in a game that you lost by 14 you need more three-point shooting I know a lot of y’all don’t like it cuz it’s like you live or die by the three yeah and you didn’t take him here and

You lost the game because of it you have to keep up with that when opponents are doing it you can’t be getting outscored by 20 plus from three so Jordan Hawkins maybe needs more run design plays for him get other plays out of him in other

Actions so that he takes more than two three point attempts when he’s one of the better shooters that you have Jordan Hawkins took as many three-point attempts as Jonas valunas Jordan Hawkins took as many three-point attempts as Larry Nance Jr which one’s the better shot which

One’s a better shot you already know the answer to that they’ve got to use their guys a little bit better than they already are and this offense then gets very stagnant Zion gets the ball down at the low block no one moves when there are three people on him it took Jonas V

Chunis cutting and then a bad pass to him hands aren’t great either but like at least he recognized that and went and did something utilize your players to the best of their ability look I don’t think JV is the answer but if you’re going to put him out there on the court yeah

You’ve got to try and post him up they tried to do that and he struggled in this one right like he really struggled with nurkic nurkic who a couple years ago it’s like six years ago now would just was embarrassed by the Pelicans in the postseason he had 19 points 19

Rebounds and four assists he looked incredible in this game he’s not an incredible player that’s a problem you need to be utilizing your guys more you know if you could have taken 10 more threes you shot 41% from three in this game that’s probably the move if you’re

Going to lack that that aggression from you know Zion and the rest of the team here you know looking at this it also goes into the rotation right Trey Murphy played the majority of the third quarter which I think is good and his minutes were paired exactly with Zion Williamson

But because of that that meant they gave him a more of a break in the fourth because he needed some rest and he only played under he played under five minutes he didn’t take a shot in the fourth quarter you need that three-point shooting and threat out there his

Defense has not been good but you got to score you’ve got to score right cool you know against the Boston Celtics you you you held them to 24 points in the third quarter it’s really good number you scored 11 right defense doesn’t matter if you can’t score both have to kind of

Go hand inand this game the Boston game the OKC game you also are really seeing you know the missing Brandon Ingram in the fourth quarter against OKC Brandon Ingram would have at least made some shots potentially or gotten the ball to Zion Williamson in those final three

Minutes so don’t go scoreless where he basically doesn’t touch it right you know against the Boston Celtics in that third quarter when the offense because of the center position issue is is rearing its head at least you have someone who can make some shots and at least generate some forward momentum for

Your team you know same thing in this one right in that first quarter when they were really looking sluggish all right go hit those mid-rangers there’s a time and place for them you got to shoot threes to but it would have pulled guys out of the paint at least a little bit

To challenge that for the most part but I think teams truly realize we’ll let anyone else make shots other than Zion or CJ or Trey and everyone else go and do your thing and they’re not scared of them so you’ve got to turn those guys into offensive threats more Jordan

Hawkins and more threes from him let him Reign because he’s on The Scouting Report they defend that right you know Dyson Daniels I at least got to give a lot of credit to here for being more aggressive and not looking for his shot but being willing to take the shot

You’ve got to give him a ton of credit after that really rough game against the Boston Celtics he goes four of eight made a three I’ll take that right you don’t normally see that from him seven rebounds five assists that’s how you impact the game he was good for the

Pelicans Off the Bench utilizing him like that where he’s aggressive with some more shooting around him so more minutes for Jordan Hawkins I think is definitely the way to go there’s there’s things they can do to get back to winning ways it’s not pretty the standings are getting really tight

We’ll look at that in tomorrow’s show there are things you can do that mitigate how negative the center position is for New Orleans right now and again this is why when we look towards the playoffs and they’re going to get in you look for the right matchup the you know the Minnesota Timberwolves

Are a good matchup I think because the matchups that are good matchups are where the center position isn’t an issue Clippers being one two because of zubach and all that still not great right now you got to win games you got to figure some things out in the Pelicans coaching

Staff seems to be struggling to find kind of the right answers to What’s plaguing them currently hopefully with two little more winnable games coming up on the schedule that changes a little bit there’s still a chance to kind of Salvage this Homestead and go three and

Three on it if you win the next two so coming up let’s talk about Devon Booker and his 52 points because part of this is just Devin Booker is freaking good but part of it and Willie Green said this after the game they didn’t defend him properly and that type of mentality

With the Phoenix Suns 124 111 I want to look at Devon Booker here 52 points this dude lights up New Orleans if if there is ever a way they can get Devin Booker on this team do it because the way he plays in the Smoothie King Center you

You’ never lose a home game they should do they should try and get this guy as much as possible so that you know which everyone should try and get Devon Booker he’s a really good player because he lights them up it’s just absurd right he had 52 last game that’s 104 points in

The last two games he’s played in New Orleans I think he had 40 before that or 30 before that just an absurd performance from him against the New Orleans Pelicans it’s um it’s kind of sickening here right so let me look this up Devin Booker Booker against the Pelicans his

Past couple games here it’s pretty ridiculous right like I don’t have all of them in front of me that’s kind of annoying here anyway he does this he does and scores a lot he scored 58 against them on December of 2022 he scored 52 so he had 110 points in two

Games adding another 52 so that’s 162 points in three games straight against New Orleans that’s just silly and ridiculous here’s the thing when you looked at some of the shots he was making against New Orleans there was a three against herb Jones in the first

Half that I think really sums it up was like Picture Perfect Defense by herb Jones just on him guarding him contesting him hand right on him handing in the face on the shot Deon Booker Rises up shoots it makes it right if you are looking at one-on-one individual

Defense I don’t think you could look for much more or better than that that said he went eight of 16 from three 19 of 28 that’s 68% from the field 52 points nine assists he had just three turnovers look even if you have one-on-one individual defense being played perfectly and again herb Jones

Did as good of a job as you can imagine here if the dude’s making shots like that if the dude is beating you like that right you need to do something different you need to play a more aggressive style of basketball on him you need to trap him you need to force

The ball out of his hands when someone is just getting that hot you can’t let them just continue to be hot sometimes NBA guys do this look Caitlyn Clark does this at the college level too you can defend her perfectly but she’s still making shots so what do you do don’t let

Her get the ball throw to it or trap her literally anything other than just letting her torch people one-on-one even if the defense is good and Willie Green said after the game with how well Devon Booker’s played against against this team you got to do something different

You got to have more aggression against him you can’t just he called it soft I don’t want to say it’s soft but uh did Devon was Devon Booker made to feel uncomfortable in the slightest in this game the answer is no and Willie Green realizing that after the fact is great

But that’s three games now that he’s done it to your team and that you haven’t changed the game plan on it right he was great in the first in the first quarter you knew he was having this kind of game in the first quarter

He was eight of 10 from the field for 24 points defend him differently defend him differently in the second quarter 13 points on six of eight shooting it wasn’t like they made it tough on him they started to force some misses in the third quarter when the defense was a

Little bit better and Phoenix just overall cooled off a little bit still at 11 in the fourth quarter to kind of help seal the game away when they didn’t really need him as much just four but play him much harder in that second quarter than you did you know force him

Into turnovers and different things like that and they didn’t do it look I I I I don’t have a problem with Willie Green as a head coach overall like I don’t think he’s going to get fired I don’t think they should fire him I think the defense is good they’re improving all of

Those things sticks with certain guys yeah more so than we’d like probably but again I don’t think there’s an answer to the center position other than maybe going with small ball with Zion Williamson oh I didn’t even talk about the rebounds part we’ll talk about it

Here that reminded me you know so but this to not realize that you’ve just got a defend a a hot dude who won’t miss it sounded weird a guy like making his shots who’s on fire like you’ve got to do that differently you’ve got to recognize that in the moment you’ve got

To make adjustments and they failed to do that and that’s part of the reason why they lost this game part of the reason why they lost this game so on the rebounding with the small ball right one of the things when you look at kind of

Larry an Jr versus Jonas Valen junis and we’ll probably talk more about this in the in tomorrow’s show too you know the answer isn’t like well they’re getting killed on the board so you got to put in yonas what happened was for the most part the pelins were okay on the

Offensive glass till kind of they they weren’t and in general they really struggled I thought in that third quarter with some of it and you kind of saw come up and it and it ties to their three-point shooting so it’s not as simple as it put in the guy who’s taller

Than than larance Jor you’ll get some of those boards you know when teams take a lot of Threes And you miss threes those rebounds tend to be longer they’re long rebounds right you’re putting more force behind the ball so if it hits the iron hits the backboard it’s going to bounce

Back with more Force so it doesn’t just kind of fall right down below it’s going to bounce into like a mid-range area or sometimes back out to the three-point line centers and big men under the basket don’t really help with that you know that’s on your wings your guards

For and this was a three rather than running back in transition I need to try and maybe get into a rebounding position to secure a long rebound and you New Orleans failed to knew that there were a couple of possessions where Phoenix got offense boards off of long threes that

Were missed and that led to Long rebounds your Center’s not going to help as much there certainly there are times when they were out rebounding Larry n Jr below the basket but there were also at times out rebounding Jonas valent chunis so the rebounding in general when it

Comes to the small ball yes can hurt you but look if you’re not getting these offensive boards with Jonas out if you’re not getting some of these defensive boards with yonas out there and that’s the best way they chance they have of getting them say it’s worse with

Larry Nance Jr if you’re just not getting them in general run with Zion at the five that’s the concern over that lineup that’s the concern over that lineup is rebounding with Zion at the five but if you’re not getting boards anyway with your other two centers who cares you’re just you’re

Just not going to get those rebounds you may as well go with the lineup that can score and that’s definitely what that Zion at the five is we’ll look more at that in tomorrow show we’ll look more at the standings too like what are the games the Pelicans have to win how many
