Thunder, Wolves, and Magic have exceeded their pre-season expectations by the most and that’s basically the name of the award. If you told someone before the season began that the C’s would get 65 wins, they’d be a little surprised, but would understand it.
If you told anyone that the Magic would have a chance to take the 2nd seed in the East, you’d have made everyone choke due to the hilarity of the statement.

I’m not surprised. It’s kind of a “exceeds expectations” award for coaches and even though this year does exceed expectations, we were good last year and the narrative about stacked roster took hold early

The thunder coach getting that recognition is still weird to me. Shai is a top tier mvp candidate. Are Jaylen and KP really “stars” to call the Celtics a super team? Idk maybe it’s homerism but it feels like any chance media has to discount the Celtics they take it.
The whole season was set up as “championship or bust” right from the start. So not matter what the season is a failure unless we win it all which would just be “expected”. The whole narrative is dumb and seems to be exclusive to the Celtics.

I mean, I think this is fair. If the Magic, the Thunder, and the Rockets didn’t have exceptional coaching, it does seem like they’d have a significantly worse record. (I’m not sure how much the Timberwolves’ success is a matter of coaching, though.) But the Celtics? Are you telling me if Mazzulla got sick at the start of the season and, say, Sam Cassell stepped up to be head coach, the Celtics wouldn’t still be #1 or #2 in the East? With this roster?

You’d think winning 10 games more than the next best team in the league would cement it. Most people had the Bucks over the Celtics to start the season, so it’s not like they didn’t overachieve

COTY is always given to a mid team that over performs, last off-season we saw three former winners of it get moved because they couldn’t do it again. Now look at how all of the teams and coaches involved in those moves are doing rn.

Joe has been very good this year but he also inherited a team coming off a finals appearance. That’s gonna count against him in the eyes of a lot of national voters. Also, I don’t think regular season success counts as much to non-Boston fans. Pundits know the Celtics are a good-great regular season team. They have been under 3 different coaches with Tatum/Brown on the team. I think there’s some fatigue there

Tatum doesn’t win MVP despite being the best player on by far the best team because he has a stacked roster.
Mazzula doesn’t win COTY because he has a stacked roster.
But at the same time our stacked roster only got 2 all stars, because D White and KP only play well becausw kf our stacked roster.
Hell Jaylen Brown might not even make it to All NBA team because of our stacked roster.
At some point they need to start giving somebody on our team credit.

What bothers me more is that we might only get 1 all-nba in Tatum while the coach is not given any credit. So if it’s not the coach, why don’t we have 3-4 all-nba in our team?

This is not surprising. We have been a balanced juggernaut all year long, and this balance hurt the chance of anyone in any major trophy race.
Mazzulla for instance will have the narrative that Tatum, Brown, Porzingis etc… make his job easier. Tatum will have the same shit for MVP saying that he got help everywhere, yadda yadda yadda.
On the other hand, no one expected OKC there, Daigneault did a fantastic job, and Shai is (when he was not hurt) frankly playing like a MVP.
I mean, I don’t mind, all that matters is Banner 18 at the end.
