Jason Timpf is joined by the guys over at @Nerd_Sesh to discuss the upcoming NBA playoffs. The guys debate whether Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and the Phoenix Suns should be taken seriously in the Western Conference. Jason believes they are a contender to win an NBA championship based on their offensive firepower while the Nerd Sesh guys don’t have the Suns in their top 10. The guys then discuss whether there is any team in the East who can stop Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics after Giannis Antetokounmpo will be hampered with a calf injury, and Joel Embiid is still ramping up from meniscus surgery. Jason and the Nerd Sesh duo dive into the Western Conference play-in games and debate whether LeBron James and the Lakers or Steph Curry and the Warriors can win their way in.

The Suns have shown absolutely nothing this season that would make you think they're a contender. The only reason people are trying to pretend otherwise is because they don't want to look like morons for their preseason picks. This Suns team was doomed as soon as they traded for Beal. It still blows my mind how anyone was able to convince themselves otherwise. The absolute best case for this Suns team is losing in the first round. Jason has been way too high on them all year and refuses to admit he was wrong. I bet he still wont admit it even if they lose in the play in. "Just responding to new information" as he likes to say. Even though that's a cop out and doesn't even apply to the Suns situation. The information has been there all year. He's just been wrong about it.
Clippers at their best are an offensive juggernaut and when playoffs come you know kawhi really takes pride in his defense and that energy is infectious
Denver will get trashed by Dallas. Trashed. And Jokic scored 16 points against Dallas frontcourt.

Im not saying the suns are the best team or favorites to win the west but make no mistake.

If they can avoid the clippers and okc they have a great chance of winning the west.
Pelicans, Lakers, wolves, and Denver are exactly the type of teams that he suns want to face because the suns can stay in front and rotate on defense to those slower footed teams.

I think if the Lakers make it out of the play in as the 8th seed and Denver maintains the 1st seed (both very likely at this point), i'm putting my money on a sweep or a gentleman's sweep which is why having them as high makes no sense and Carson/Logan not having the warriors, suns and Jason not having the 76ers and warriors as low as he had is preposterous. All those three teams will have a better chance of making it to the second round over Lakers for me
I just don’t understand how you can simultaneously have the Warriors as your #10 contender while also picking them to lose in the playin.

Mailbag Question: Do you think the Mavs could consider making Luka guard Kawhi in some important stretches? Pelicans are a bad match up for the Clippers bc they put their best defender on the point guard (Harden or Westbrook) and Zion takes on the Kawhi matchup. In my mind either DJJ or PJ could try to replicate that Herb Jones role and then have the other guard Paul George while Luka has the power to hang with Kawhi.
A WORSE SUNS team took the most games off Denver last year. But let's drool all over Lakers who got swept with a better team. Make it make sense.
I get the suns hate certainly, they’ve been massively inconsistent and hard to watch at times but its not a stretch that this team is better than last years and they were the only team to take more than a single game off of the denver nuggets dominant run to the title, do I think they can beat them no but having beal over chris paul, adding shooting, not having Ayton, they’re at least better than last year, still a disappointment to this point certainly but still
I honesty think they have such a poor analysis of suns. The issue with the team is Dbook not being a playmaker and Kd not getting touches because book shoots too much. That’s why end games you see other guys trying to score because dbook spent the game looking for his shot they are down and now they need someone to step up.

Mailbag question: Hi Jason, big fan of your work from down here in Australia. Thank you for allowing me to understand basketball more than I ever have, even from my days playing, through the way you analyse and break down the game. My question is, not just you, but many other long time respected basketball journalists and former players have all said Anthony Davis is the best defender in the world, and he has had an outstanding season. Sure, he has had a few nights where he has struggled and some match ups cause him issues, but that's nothing new. Even MJ, Lebron, Magic, Kobe and co in their absolute primes had match ups that caused them issues. But with all that said, he doesn't seem to be in the conversation for Defensive Player of the Year. Availability isn't an issue and can't be used as an excuse. Rudy is the runaway favourite, yet when they have matched up, AD has come out on top, same against Wemby who we all know will win a collection of DPOYs in his career. I know they like to look at a teams record, but Rudy has had outstanding defenders around him this season, whilst AD has essentially carried the defence with Vando out a lot- to me he is being punished by the front office not putting other good defenders around him, and not being assessed on his actual play. Would love you to try to shed some light on this, as I can't work out why AD having such a great defensive season, ranked by so many in the know as the best defensive player in the world, is seemingly without a shot. Damn Jason steady b yapping when it comes to the pels. It’s like he doesn’t watch. Does he not know that BI is injured so the pels starting line up wasn’t even playing last night? Also the traditional starting line up isn’t even close to the pels best 5 but still the net rating is no longer negative. He’s just wrong all around. Glad the pels won last night pretty convincingly without BI which they are a much better team when he plays

Suns match up well with Nuggets Timberwolves Kings Lakers and Warriors. They struggle against Clippers,Mavs and OKC. It depends who they get but I’ve seen them play excellent defense lately. If suns play defense and don’t turn the ball over they are the favorites to me to come out the West
Nobody ever says the true problem with the Suns. ITS CHEMISTRY! They had a totally new team of players who never played together to start the season. THEN dumped almost their entire bench at the trade deadline to begin the chemistry process again. Not to mention injuries. NO other team is dealing with that kind of unfamiliarity in the season with each other. Hence the turnovers, scoring droughts, and miscues. They are getting better every day, but they are winning solely on talent. Their year is most likely next year, not this one. But if they put it together like they have in spurts, they're unstoppable.
Suns are frauds, all know this. Only way they could beat the kings is with sus whistles and booker touch fouls. Phoenix is a god awful hell hole.
