Toronto Raptors drop to 8th in NBA Draft Lottery, will convey 1st-rounder to Spurs, and that’s good!
In Episode 1635, Sean Woodley goes solo to react to Sunday’s NBA Draft Lottery in which the Toronto Raptors fell two spots in the draft order and will thus convey the 8th-overall selection in the 2024 NBA Draft to the San Antonio Spurs to close the book on the Jakob Poeltl trade. Off the top, Sean digs into why, considering the circumstanes, a fall to no. 8 was among the very best possible outcomes for the Raptors on lottery day, and why wiping the slate clean and moving forward with all of the team’s picks in the Raptors’ control is a small price to pay for a trade for Poeltl that was situationally misguided, but ultimately ends up being totally fine as a value proposition considering the overall weakness of the 2024 class of prospects. Next, Sean digs into what conveying the pick means for the Raptors this summer as it pertains to their cap flexibility — which is expanded due to not having a high lottery rookie scale deal on their books — and trade possibilities, which are far more wide open now that their picks in the long term are no longer encumbered. Lastly, Sean discusses one of his favourite downstream effects of conveying the pick this year, which is the lack of a debt hanging over the team going into next season, and the front office having no external factors dictating whether or not to go into the take. Whatever the results for next year, they’ll be based on the merits of the play on the floor, and not tied to the need to tank hard in order to avoid sending a high pick in a deep draft to the Spurs in a year’s time. It’s over. It’s time to turn the page and feel alright.

Which draft guy are you hitching your wagon to at 19th-overall?
Shawn’s the only Raps fan happy right now 😂
They tanked and kept thier jobs plus yakob has no value in the league due to poor free throw percentage… 20 million…. Its a big loss …. Not even "ha ha" worthy…. Just sad… If zach edey is drafted 8th… Omg…
Masai has to go. Strong draft or not. We’re now a perennial play in team for the next 5 years.
AnD ThAtS A GoOd ThiNg 🙃🙃😡😡😡
#19: Ware C
#31: Dunn SF
Undrafted: PG
I’m also relieved the pick conveyed this year and not next year. I’d like to see the Raptors make use of their cap space this off-season by trying to poach an RFA stretch 4 with a slight overpay. I would throw $100M/4yrs at Patrick Williams and if the Bulls match, try it with Obi Toppin. If one of them works out you get a young decent starting stretch 4 that moves Scottie to the 3 and RJ to the 2, which I think would really benefit both guys. If those teams match, you handicap two conference rivals with salary inflexibility going forward.
At 19: Holmes, Yves Missi, Tyler Smith or Devin Carter
At 31: Ryan Dunn, Pacome Dadiet or Ulrich Chomche
@sean woodley its all good, masai already told us raptors are in rebuild and they are not 1 year events, and if its slow it can be 6 years. raptors wont have drama next year when tank for bottom 5 picks. there will be no free agents coming to toronto that are any good because they dont sign in toronto. so once gary trent, boucher and brown moved, the raptors will hae a gleague bench. horrible defence also, so good enough to compete for bottom 5 pick. will be even better if they trade jakob poeltl and bottom out.
