Taking full stock of the Toronto Raptors’ trade for Jakob Poeltl | NBA Draft Lottery Reaction

In Episodse 1636, Sean Woodley is joined by Vivek Jacob (Raptors in 7, Sportsnet) to take a look at the full scope of the Jakob Poeltl after Sunday’s Draft Lottery results finalized the official package the Toronto Raptors sent to the San Antonio Spurs at the 2023 Trade Deadline. Off the top, Sean and Vivek assess the overal cost the Raptors paid to land their starting center for 4+ seasons at around $20 million a season, and why as a pure value play, the cost is fine, if slightly more than you’d ideally like the Raptors to have paid. Plus, where does the deal rank among the moves made in the Masai Ujiri era? Next, Sean and Vivek chat about the downstream effects of the Poeltl trade, the bad decisions that led it, and whether the post-trade decisions by the front office were directly influenced and connected to the Poeltl acquisition, or if they need to be viewed as separate entities entirely. Lastly, Sean and Vivek finish up by examining Poeltl’s role in the team going forward, and whether there’s a chance for the Raptors starting center to redeem the trade by being a key piece in the Scottie Barnes-Immanuel Quickley-RJ Barrett era.

  1. The price of Yak was a lottery pick, and we have to live with it. We were competing with BOS for him, who could only offer late FRP. Better to give up a high pick in a weak draft compared to a loaded 2025 draft. Now we have the flexibility of making win now moves or going with a prospect.

PS… IND was never gonna give one of their young dudes, so have to forget about that.

  2. The reality is the Raps are better when Jak is playing, yes would a Myles Turner-type center be better for sure, but that doesn't exist, and you're not going to get Myles Turner for one first. If you want to hate on a trade, and the bad performance the Raps got from it, hate on Norman Powell for Gerry Trent Jr. GTJ was supposed to be good, he was supposed to be the floor spacer, he's a shooting guard thats what they do. We should be talking about the big contract Raps have to give GTJ because he's so good, but he's probably going to walk because he's not that good.

  3. What’s missing from this whole scenario is that if the Raps didn’t trade for Thaddeus Young, Raps could’ve drafted Walker Kessler in 2022 and Jakob would have never come back to the Raps

  4. Poeltl Trade Rating = Vince Carter trade
Poeltl trade cost the team 2 top 10 picks 2 years in a row.

Toronto’s management inability to understand where they were in a rebuild comparatively to the competition around the league. (Bottom playoff team with talent that had peaked in skill besides Scottie) Small market team decent at drafting trading off its pick.

Little to no cap room hoping that Fred, Siakam, OG weren't going to get Max offers from other teams in order to keep them on the team together. (Championship talent, Allstars, Potential Defensive Player of the year)

May have cost us the ability to build a true contender around Scottie Barnes. This maybe the new Chris Bosh era where we have 4 or 5 years of Barnes barely making the play-ins before saying good bye.

The worst part of the pick conveying isn't not having a pick this year or Scottie leaving in 5 years. It's that the same management that thought it was a good idea to trade it now has control over Potential trading even more picks in the immediate future.

What is the plan for this team to be 9th or 10th with 1 or 2 play-in games with bad draft odds?
