So the Atlanta Hawks Won the Draft Lottery…What’s Next?

wanted to go back real quick to uh you you mentioned that the Spurs in your opinion should not go out there and try to trade for a Star to accelerate the rebuild uh one player that’s been kind of rumored or just speculated as to like hey maybe they should go out and get this player is Trey young he he’s been rumored here and there to the Spurs uh and that kind of reminds me of Atlanta situation because now all of a sudden they have a top pick as to where going in like they were like I said back half of the lottery up there at like number 10 so now they’re in a situation to where hey they can go out there and they can pick anybody from this class and there are some pretty good guys in that top five maybe not necessarily players you think are going to evolve into you know top 10 players in the league but certainly players that can help Atlanta uh get to a better place seeing as though the past few years have been disappointing so uh question I wanted to post to you Oliver specifically about the hawk situation and how they should approach uh selecting the number one pick here they do have Jaylen Johnson and he really broke out this year in a big way for them had some great minutes and uh they can go two different directions they can go guard maybe they can ship Trey young off and just keepon and maybe go with the guard in that spot or they can really just look for another front Court partner you know maybe look for an Alex star to kind of put in that front Court uh he’s been uh mocked at number one for multiple people here in the space so that’s just an interesting question I’ve been thinking about but I want to get your thoughts on that if you in their position would you go for a guard at that spot of number one or would you lean more towards uh taking somebody in that front court for the number one pick sure so um I guess to make it clear like I have Alex SAR as my like onea in this class right now relatively in line with consensus but um that being said I think he is like the in my opinion he is the clear one and so I would I would take him and if I feel like if I taking anyone else in this position it would be it feels like you’re leaving value on the table with the number one pick I mean what is this is like the first number one pick Atlanta’s ever had right in history something uh I want to say like maybe in like almost 50 years and they weren’t the Atlanta Hawks so I mean for the Atlanta Hawks yeah point being this opport does not come around often and when you have this opportunity you want to maximize the value and be thinking like do not like not be thinking so short term however if you really feel like this team needs a needs like another guard on the roster they need essentially if they need any someone that has the skills that Alex SAR does not have then you know that’s I would rather trade down and you know feel those calls then take someone at the number one pick who I don’t feel is worthy of that number one pick who doesn’t align closely with that value and it’s all relative right like I don’t think there’s a I don’t think there’s despite me saying that SAR is 1A onea in this class does not equal onea in last year’s class or like prior classes like I don’t see any of these guys really being like a Cornerstone that you build a franchise around like a Zion Williamson Kade Cunningham Victor wean Yama um you know Kyrie Irving take your pick it makes it difficult to you know match up that value as I was saying if so if you truly want to guard you got to move down to the to the level at which you think the guard closely the guard that targeting closely aligns with that value so all that being said like everything should be on the table for Atlanta um you know you have the best pick available in alexar in my opinion you could trade down with the teams who do have Lottery fodder we just talked about San Antonio Portland has multiple picks in the first round um They al Atlanta also has a click capella expiring contract um you know that I’m sure they would love to get off their books and you know a team with salary cap who maybe doesn’t have doesn’t have like you know Championship aspirations or something they could uh you know take that contract on or you could package the capella deal you know you could get in the number one pick and you could just completely reset and you could trade trade Trey Young trade de Jon Murray in a separate deal and could just get like an absolute treasure chest of assets to then you know completely build around like a jayen Johnson um so or and maybe Ono kongu sticks around it’s not super clear what their organization thinks of him uh yet as whether he’s a starter or not despite that uh extension coming through yeah personally I would um if I were in the Atlanta front office doing my thing I would uh draft Alex SAR I would move Clint capella um and then I would feel pretty comfortable being able to pair Alex and and yeka share having them share minutes on the floor but also staggering them a little bit um you know I think there would definitely be growing pains at first but they kind of can alternate between one being a spacer one being a rim Runner um defensively one can work as an anchor one SL rim protector the other can be you know a free safety RoR uh off ball uh mover so uh long story short um those are my thoughts on Atlanta’s number one pick the routes that they have in front of them and the ultimately the choice I would go with that’s a very sound strategy I think that going in that direction starting I think it’s a very real possibility when you have a team that’s kind of stuck in the middle the way they’ve been the past three seasons it it would make a lot of sense for them to just say hey we’re just gonna start over Trey Young’s had a great time with us but we want to go in a different direction sell him off like you said get those assets and then bring in Alex it’s something that I think they shouldn’t overthink you know Alex by many accounts most accounts is that number one guy go with him get the most talented guy you can and I mean he’s going to fortify your front Court you know as far as just automatically being a defensive stud and then there’s that upside offensively that can pair really well with various players they have on the roster Jaylen Johnson Ana so I’m definitely with you there I like that that strategy for them I think it can really work out in the long run sacrificing a little bit in the short term but definitely going to help them get over that hump and get back to where they want to be

In an unlikely turn of events, the Atlanta Hawks now hold the rights to the #1 pick in next month’s NBA draft. While this is obviously great news for the organization and it’s fans, it also brings a fair amount of questions into the fold. Do they hang onto franchise centerpiece Trae Young, or sell him to the highest bidder? Do they keep the pick in order to select the top overall prospect in Alex Sarr, or trade out of the top spot for assets?

We attempt to answer some of these questions and put the Hawks’ wonderful luck with ping pong balls into perspective during this brief clip from our recent draft lottery podcast episode. Tune in now!

  1. Atlanta will draft SARR trade CC and Bogdan hopefully for Brandon Ingram, Atlanta won't be trading Trae nor DJ 😅😅😅😅😅😅

  2. Mr Olivier.
Clint capela is horrible and okongwu does not have the potential to be a top 10 center in the NBA, so why would the hawks trade down instead of picking a center with great potential and high floor.

  3. I think we will pick Sarr. Probably keep both Trae & DJ. Trade CC and Hunter. Bogi has a good contract and management likes him. Now, if it were me, I'm conflicted on trading Trae bc of what he's done for the franchise. But his recent comments make me say, "Let's make that tough decision. " Trade Trae for a pick and another wing. No one from Lakers, but if he wants to go there, then get a 3rd team involved, namely New Orleans. Try to get Ingram. CC will be moved on , Hunter too. All this might be a way of saying, ok, DJ at point, Bogi at the 2. Or could come off bench, depending on any deals. Ingram at the 3, JJ at 4 & Sarr or OO as you're Center. Now, all that is VERY Complicated lol. But our gm(s) have to step up & find a way. And our owner has to stop lying about going over the luxury tax….All that being said, I wouldn't mind keeping our guy Trae. 😅 💯

  4. Keep!!!! We messed up with Luka Doncic trying to be cute on draft day. Draft the best player and keep the best players

  5. If it were me I'd pick Sarr and trade Trae and Capela. The Hawks didn't suffer much without him. Trae's the best offensive player, but I'd say the ball moves better with Murray. Murray will let Johnson, Sarr, Boggy, Bey and Hunter play their game and takeover when needed. Trae is all Trae when he has the ball.

While I'd expect the offense to take a stepback without Young. The defense should take a big step forward. Switching should vastly improve with Young on the floor.

  6. Trading Trae isn’t going to get good value this year. Trading Murray is not a good idea. Sarr might not be the best pick😅😮, and it might be good to trade down

  7. The Hawks have did a poor job finding a identity and failed Atlanta and not Trae. They never had a true backup point or center. Extending CC, OO and Hunter was a bad idea
