Will the Cavs extend Donovan Mitchell’s contract? – Sports4CLE 5-17-24
kind of interested in in your thoughts take a listen to what Brian wior said he’s hearing relative to Donovan Mitchell and signing an extension when I talk to people behind the scenes it’s all over the place I got people telling me Donovan is staying the contract is drawn up 205 million he ain’t turning it down he’s going to be in Cleveland not going anywhere don’t talk to me about it again and I got other guys saying and I don’t mean like some people who don’t know but people who would know sure I Guy saying he ain’t signing we got our trade offer ready or so and so’s got a trade offer ready he’s going there he’s going there and I trust both of them okay so what does that tell you that tells you that Donovan has played this very skilled and close to the vest Chris you’ve said this for quite a while nobody knows what Donovan Mitchell is thinking relative to Cleveland no not when it comes to Cleveland specifically not when it comes to his future specifically but but I think Donovan has Dro Clues throughout this entire process of what ultimately matters to him and what ultimately he is looking for in a basketball situation and I’ll put it here um I’ll start here because I think this matters and and I wrote it the other night for cleveland.com even though it wasn’t the thing that went crazy viral um Donovan is happy in Cleveland He has expressed that many times publicly and privately that he likes this situation he believes in the direction of this organization he believes in many of his teammates um he believes that this is a place where he can consistently win um he has seen this team go from playin team to playoff team to a team that got to the Eastern Conference semi-finals but Donovan wants to compete for championships Donovan believes that he’s at a point in his career he has reached a status where he is going to be evaluated and judged specifically by team playoff success he has never for all of the times that he has gotten to the playoffs every single time that he has been in the NBA every single season he has gotten to the playoffs but he’s never gotten out of the second round of the playoffs and that eats at him that bothers him he can’t be the face of the NBA like he wants to be one day when LeBron is gone when Steph is gone when k is gone he can’t be the face of the NBA with that big missing piece on his resume um so it’s all about can I win here in Cleveland what kinds of things can this organization do this off season when it comes to the roster when it comes to the coach when it comes to The Supporting Cast around me that that put me in a position to best compete for a championship that’s what Donovan is wondering that’s what Donovan is asking because he wants championships that’s that’s what he’s chasing anytime anybody makes any decision in the NBA or in Major League Baseball or the NFL Dave you know this there are different factors involved but there’s always one driving factor and for Donovan he is driven by winning and if he believes that Cleveland is the place where he can chase championships where they’ll give him the opportunity to get out of the second round get to the Conference Finals get to the NBA finals then he’s going to stay and he’s going to happily stay but if he feels like there’s a better basketball situation out there that gives him something that Cleveland cannot or Cleveland does not at this point in time then I think he’s going to explore that and I think he’s going to tell the front office you know what I’m not comfortable signing an extension because of this this this and this I don’t know what he’s thinking I don’t know where he’s going to end up I don’t know if it’s going to be in Cleveland but I can tell you that it’s going to be the place where Donovan feels like he has the best opportunity to chase a championship because that is all that matters right that let’s let’s rephrase that is the most important thing that matters to him right now
Is it smart to extend Mitchell’s contract?
