NBA Legends Explain why Larry Johnson was the Real Deal

NBA Legends Explain why Larry Johnson was the Real Deal

bold cut and uh of course LJ didn’t like that type of haircut so we had to not cut we we didn’t able to shoot the scene that morning hey guys this is Dominique Wilkins this is Sean ke hey this is basol NBA fans what’s up this is Vince Carter here hey what’s up this is Matt bars if you’re an old school NBA fan like I am make sure you check out the basketball time machine with my man sea Davis hey guys what’s going on this sea David and I welcome you back to the basketball time machine year old school NBA show in today’s episode I want to take a look at NBA legends talking about Larry Johnson yeah that guy was there too and he was damn good so in today’s episode I found some clips not too many was pretty difficult to find them but some clips of NBA legends talking about LJ but before we start with that let me ask you guys for a small favor if you like the show Please Subscribe and like the video if you enjoy the content all right you guys let’s go for [Music] it now the first player opinion that we’re going to take a look at is pretty interesting because it comes from Alonzo Morning now we remember they were teammates in Charlotte but then they had this huge Fallout where the climax was basically the Miami Heat playing against the New York Knicks and the two were going at it in a fist fight legendary scene but hey morning still has a lot of respect for LJ speak to I think someone who gets looked over is LJ had a lot of game you know obviously you guys had your battles in college and and the pros but teammates at 1.2 speak to LJ’s versatility and what his game was like for he was 66 67 similar to a Charles Barkley you know but probably a little bit more athletic uh very skill great hands around the basket um unfortunately the injury kind of derailed his career but if he would have never gotten the back injury you know who knows basketball IQ was high yeah basketball I IQ was high uh have you had him on the show I just I just hit Tim Thomas today to give me the you got to get the show man I mean I mean just you got to thinking he came doing an era a lot of people don’t realize he want the dunk contest that year yeah man he won a dunk me he was extremely athletic you know the 260 yeah yeah yeah he was a load on that block man yeah he was he was a load on that block man so um him and not complimented each other extremely well absolutely arguably no player made as big an impact on the Charlotte Hornets organization from both a basketball and cultural standpoint like that of power forward Larry Johnson the number one pick in the 1992 NBA draft in Five Seasons with the team the franchise’s second all-time leading rebounder won the 1992 NBA Rookie of the Year award made the 1993 all NBA second team and earned two All-Star Game selections you were just so bouncy and springy athletic and you hurt your back and when did you hurt it how did you hurt it and then what was that like mentally trying to come back from that for the next you know little while you had been an Allstar already it wasn’t it wasn’t it wasn’t easy at all it was yeah I felt like giving up at times you feel like cuz I’ve always wanted Rex I was always my goal was to be the best basketball playing the world safe at home this one is so special y’all I know we say that all the time but y’all don’t know this is my childhood I used to wear my haircut like this man this is this is the legendary OG all the way from South Dallas to UNLV to Charlotte to the Dream Team to the New York City Nicks man this our OG big brother Larry Grandma Johnson we appreciate you for joining us OG this is huge in the next clip we’re going to take a look at LJ’s iconic four-point play and of course you have some former teammates talking about LJ and yeah this moment once we did Come Away with a split we knew the third game here was critical if they had got that win then it have took away our homec court advantage so third game after a split third game was a big game Jackson blows by Charlie Ward to lay it in here’s Rick Smiths he got another one he’s still on fire they outplayed us right from the start it was really difficult they were so big so long we just were really struggling Perkins for three Indiana in the midst of a 10 nothing run on the New York dicks Larry had a great game he knew he had to have a great game Patrick uing was hurt so he had to pick up the scoring that night they needed him to score because no Patrick Hing and certainly that night he provided it Johnson for three Johnson and he was phenomenal from start to finish you know this guy was a big- time performer and the more responsibility given the more he delivered LJ and he BS in the three Larry Johnson is keeping him in the game Indiana five for five at the free throw line fourth quarter and now 6 for six the lead is three New York takes a timeout 11.9 seconds showing on the clock we knew we needed a bucket so you either take the three or you take the quick Duce and you foul and then you play it again the strategy then was to foul and hopefully they miss a free throw or two free throws and then we had a call the time out get the rebound and we had a shot to win it at the end and New York will have the ball Patrick Hing can only watch From the Bench with his injury and is it time to go for three time to take the quick first available score I think they have to take the first available score we had a pretty standard play that we would run um they did a good job they took me and spr well out of a route that we normally take well the play was for Allen Houston we drew up a play for Allen I believe I was the biggest guy on the floor at the time and LJ was just very perceptive and he came and he made himself available for the play and at that point we were so spread out that his instincts took over the ball inbounds it’s Ward Childs spr well Houston and Larry Johnson back in Ward had it tipped Johnson made a good catch [Music] [Applause] Johnson when he took the shot all you could think about is it took like forever and that ball was in the air so long and while the ball is in the air the whistle goes so now in your head you’re saying okay the worst that can happen now is he’ll get three free throws and and we’ll have a chance to tie the game Johnson is fouled and when I saw just KY count the basket and give him the foul I I’m really in disbelief there was just this moment of wow you know did this did this actually just happen whole crowd the 19,000 plus erupt at the same time if you’re a Nick fan and you don’t get goosebumps there’s something wrong with you you have this shot that lifted literally seemed like it lifted the garden off the [Music] ground and immediately you have to kind of shut that down not only an individual but as a team I just remember seeing him gesturing let me get myself together so I kind of wanted to leave him alone as soon as he turns around and this building is going crazy Chris Childs runs up to him you can see the words coming out you know letting him know exactly what what Larry’s thinking is it’s great game’s tied but if we want to win I’ve got to hit this free throw it was like dual emotions going on you you were so excited that he made the shot but immediately we had to be composed with him and for him at that point how many free throws have I’m shot throughout my career you know a free throw is a free throw n it’s change other than this is for a four-point play and this is the win the ball [Music] game game a long way from being over got it New York 5 one time out Indiana man it’s always super sad that you don’t find more clips about players who used to be big for a certain amount of time I mean there are so many like LJ for example that had like four to five years but they were big in those four to five years but you hardly have NBA players talking about them and that’s unfortunate because yo if I had a show like I don’t know like like all the smoke I would invite all the guys all the guys and ask them to talk about other players not Jordan not Kobe not LeBron but some of the ljs penny hardways uh Glenn Robinsons and those guys because hey they deserve their flowers too anyway to me LJ was not only an iconic power forward of the 1990s I think that guy had Beast potential and probably could have been one of the best players of his generation I mean in order to be in that conversation you need at least 5 to seven years where you are performing on a superstar level and with LJ he didn’t have that yeah he didn’t have that many years obviously because of injuries but hey we all know that for that short amount of time he was the real deal now you guys I hope you enjoyed this episode let me know in the comments below do you remember Larry Johnson let me know and hopefully I’ll see you next time on the basketball time machine

  1. This channel is money for old school memories- I forgot about Sprewell, Zo and Allan Houston, back when basketball was pure. Thanks man

  2. Alex English, Tom Chambers, George Gervin, Sidney Moncreif, Michael Ray Richardson, Bernard King, Chris Jackson……… just to name a few.

  3. As a Knicks fan, I loved how LJ came to NY and became a defensive presence. I met him at Pacquiao vs Marquez 3 in Vegas—nicest guy ever

  4. Allan Houston broke my heart when I was a kid left Detroit Pistons to play with the New York Knicks

  5. As a Knicks fan we got LJ after his prime but he was still a legendary Knick and is still beloved. Made the transition to a veteran leader and respected presence who still had plenty of game.

  6. LJ was a beast. I used to get goosebumps rewinding those old nba superstar VHS as a kid, he was one reason I got into playing ball.

  7. I absolutely love the work you do. These memories give me goosebumps.

I watched the spot in the video 3 times. First time I relived it, I cheered like it was that night all over again. I had to retuck the kids back into bed after I woke them cheering.

Third viewing was with the kids because, well, they were already up. Might aswell let them watch granmama

  8. Back injury ruined his ability to play above the rim but he transitioned into a good shooter and defender and I’ll never forget the 4 point game

  9. I love Larry Johnson and he is an ex-knick, but Alonzo is bugging LJ was not more athletic than Charles Barkley.

  10. When LJ gets compared to Barkley I gotta jump in. No diss to LJ's game. He was a force until injuries took their toll. But, I never saw LJ take a rip then go coast to coast with 2 wrap arounds…one to each side. Then elevate full steam over a couple guys and throw it down. Saw him do that a number of times. LJ was one of the greats of his era. CB is alltime top 100 great.

  11. with his combination of power speed and athleticism he was unstoppable in the paint. if not for the injuries he was sure fire HOF. that 90s NBA was so huge and so physical. it would break your body down. sooner or later

  12. L.J. was not 'just like Barkley..
Barkley was much better.. had more lift, developed an outside shot, better finisher, better rebounder…

  13. Prior to his injury no one could handle him. He just had the complete game and amazing athleticism.

  14. Those Mourning, LJ and Mugsy teams were the closest any Charlotte team ever came to being a threat for a chip.
Injuries and trades ended it before they could mature into a true contender.

  15. I played against LJ once in high school. He set a pick on me and it was like running into a brick wall. It was so bad HE APOLOGIZED during some free throws a few minutes later.

  16. I'm Australian and was born in 1985. My favorite player was Larry Johnson and my favorite team was the Hornets with LJ, Bogues and Morning. Even had a Larry Johnson Grandmama basketball growing up. Wish I could find a pair of his signature Cons Aero Jam shoes. Would be great to go with my Ewing Athletics

  17. i remember in my pre-teens probably, watching nba and this dude everytime when he's on the freethrow cant help but wonder how this guy got a bowling ball in each of his shoulders. i even read he signed a 12yr contract with the hornets, the team didnt want to let go of this dog.

  18. I have a lot of respect for LJ, mainly because he managed to transition his game after a severe injury 🤕 but also because he accepted a less exposed role in my beloved late 90's Knicks team. 🏀 He appears to be an excellent colleague and team member. 🤝 I wish he had never been injured, though. 😢
