Tristan Da Silva (SF/PF) – Draft Profile/Discussion

This offseason we are going to pin some discussion topics for a few days, first will be draft prospects

  • Tristan Da Silva (SF Colorado)
  • Johnny Furphy (SG/SF Kansas)
  • Tyler Smith (PF G-Leauge Ignite)
  • Kyle Filipowski (PF/C Duke)
  • TBD (Zach Edey?)
  • TBD

Let us know who TBD should be or if someone is too unlikely to be there when we pick

Most importantly, leave your thoughts on the prospect, these posts are meant to be places to discuss whatever you want related to the draft or the prospect!

Tristan Da Silva | 6'9.5" 217 | SF/PF | Colorado | age: 23.1

Stats in '24

16/5/2/1/1 on 49/40/84

Background:

  • Father was a professional boxer in Brazil

  • Younger brother of former Stanford wing Oscar Da Silva

  • Finance major

  • 2 x Academic all-big 12

  • Born in Munich, Germany

Strengths

  • Spacing: 40% on catch and shoot 3's, 1.2 points per possession on catch and shoot (87th percentile)

  • Length: 6'10.25" wingspan

  • 13% assist rate (percentage of a player's assists on a team's possessions), a willing passer capable of many types of passes (post entry, skip, quick swing..etc)

  • Post game: 13% of points scored came out of the post, takes advantage (time stamp 6:08 for mobile users) of smaller players, a good left/right hook over either shoulder

  • Capable of finishing off of hard closeouts around the cup due to crafty post/layup package

  • Team Defense: length and IQ mean he won't miss his rotation often and can disrupt driving/passing lanes as long as he's not on a mismatch

  • Good feel for the game, crafty, can upfake with just his lower body (time stamp 7:15 for mobile users), glides across the court very smooth and methodical player

  • Very good FT shooter for size (84%)

Weakness

  • Lack of footspeed means he's a mismatch on a switch

  • Might not be able to run a PnR on the NBA level, ran it on 10% of scores at CU

  • Vert is only 33.5", not an explosive player at the rim on offense or defense despite length

  • Below average rebounder for length/size

  • Thin, but not as thin as some might think (217 at combine) he's not Evan/Emoni but will get pushed off his line unless he bulks up a bit

  • Floats around the perimeter too much on offense, esp for his size and lack of iso ability

  • Does not project to grow his game as much as other prospects (already 23)

Conclusion

Da Silva is an interesting fit, his length and shooting usually means he's a mid-to-late lotto pick

If he was 21 I think he is a lotto pick, but his athletic traits and age limit his ceiling

His ceiling is limited by his age but his floor will be defined by his ability to keep up on defense when hunted on switches and make shots when no one will respect his 1:1 ability (they will be up in his jersey)

Ceiling: Nic Batum/Danny Granger with much less bounce but a better 3 ball (hard to find a good comp for this type of player)

Likely: Boris Diaw/Kyle Anderson

Floor: Patrick Baldwin

  1. Fee free to suggest other topics we should pin throughout the offseason! Looking for suggestions during the down time.

We had a poll for ‘best uniform in cavs history’ last year for example

This is the type of pick you make if you’re the Cavs in this situation. He has size and a skill that will translate to NBA success with his three point shooting. We don’t have the luxury of picking someone younger who may or may not contribute in a few years time we need meaningful minutes asap.

Based on where the Cavs are currently, I think they really need to prioritize immediate production. Someone that watches a lot more college ball than I do… Where does Da Silva land on that front? Anyone else hanging around the late first round that may have a lower ceiling but is more likely to make an immediate impact, or is this guy producing in year one? (I realize late first round and immediate impact don’t exactly go hand in hand, but hey…)

I would rather have Holmes if we move on from Allen

Love him for us. Projects to be a really good shooter at either forward position. Plays within the offense and as a connector. Could probably contribute right away, the trade off is lack up upside. I’m perfectly fine with that at pick 20 when we lack his skillset at a position of need. Can never have enough wings with size, especially when they are skilled
