it’s time to get your morning started with the news you need to know news update news update this is what’s trending with DJ and PK # NBA out she’s got to get it in throws to the corner Jaylen forces hits triple zero Grand Theft Celtics they steal game one this loss is is totally on me with 10 seconds in regulation we should have just taken the time out Advanced the ball and found a way to get it in and and made a free throw or two and and ended the game it didn’t happen and uh we made some other mistakes but our guys just need to concentrate on fighting the way they fought in this game from the Run but at the same time it’s it’s it’s one game I never get caught up in one game but uh it was U obviously the Pacers have got to win one in Boston in order to win the series and that was gift wrap they put themselves in a position to that wasn’t gift wrap for them because they earned the very right to beat in that position and then they let it slip away we’ll see how that plays out if it’s devastating because Boston can go ahead and win in in Indiana just as easily so if they would have lost that game I wouldn’t have come in here this morning oh my gosh they’re in TR I just don’t get caught up in that I’ve said it a trillion times and I’ll stay by it and the recent serieses on S Sunday prove that to the nth degree first team to four not first team to win on the home court not first team to win whatever first team to four Celtics have had game two issues we’ll see if they have a game two issue they’ve also uh handled themselves quite well after having their game two issues against Miami and New York so game one to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern fin the Western Finals start tonight the Mavericks and the Timberwolves tip off at 6:30 at the Target Center the games on TNT what are you watching for in this one is LCA Don is Luca donic going to be healthy for this seems like he comes out one night and he’s Superman and the next night he’s limping around and they lose be targeted I don’t want three guys from this draft because I’ve already got three rookies from last year’s good draft so I’m going to add three more this year from a mediocre draft class I want to be able to choose the exact guy I want I’m going to evaluate this draft as thoroughly as I can I want to be in a position where I can go get the best player I think is in this draft everyone’s going to miss on the best this is going to be like 2013 where the best player taken could be taken in the middle of the round go move up in the top five and go get the guy you really really really want and serving Utah question of the morning the Jazz reportedly were interested in acquiring dejonte Murray in a deal that included Keon George is that the right move that’s Ben Anderson’s uh reported he was among them he’s the one I saw with the first one of it oh I think he might have been don’t you kid yourself yster ye the father of three children indeed I am ye yeah Dave says no please that’s not big game hunting it’s like going to a zoo and seeing rabbits and squirrels not super exciting Allstar just jeante Murray Tony who knows Murray’s a good player George has potential it would depend on what we have to give to get him and what our plans with him once we do I think they would play him I’d say he’s not big game big game hunting a talked about after the season ended at least I hope that’s not the defition this was something that Ben was talking about at the allstar break so it was before the big game hunting statement uh at the same time though I’m not of the belief that you have to shoot for the stars or moon or don’t shoot at all it’s okay to bring in a nice player not a great player does your does your move make your team better I think that’s how you ask yourself are you better having made that move you know you’re not going to trade a 21y old for a 38-year-old who might be better in the moment I understand that but we’re not talking about that in these types of cases we’re talking about you know guys five years to go or something 20y old for a 27y old that what that kind of move does to me says okay they’re going to be more committed to getting back to the playoffs sooner and then trying to adjust from there as opposed to staying at the bottom and swinging from their heels for the fences it’s a move that I think makes them better in the short run I don’t think there’s any doubt 27y old Murray Deonte Murray is better than old Keon George now three years from now would they end up regretting it you know you got to give keante some time to develop here but if you want to win with the guys who are on your roster who are in their mid to late 20s then this trade to me moves that forward and says yeah we’re we’re committed to winning with the make deal yeah okay I think if they don’t make deals like this then it’s a long slow rebuild and is the fan base you know going to lose interest the fan the lose fan base loses interest I mean is the fan base going to yes is the fan base going to lose interest no because you’re not g to have everybody going lock Step In One Direction so some of them are yes well some of them already have we see there complaints nonstop many of them won’t so I mean I don’t think you make moves based on the fan base going to think this or that I don’t really care what the fan base thinks to me this is the kind of move that can move them into a 8910 range I don’t think it moves them farther than that it’s a move that if it’s paired with another move or two could get me excited it improves them but they’re so far away and this is while Improvement I don’t know incremental might be too harsh what does that mean might be too harsh uh it might be a little better than incremental I mean is this win worth is this worth four wins that would be incremental Improvement it’s probably worth a little more than that all right I got you especially if it’s partnered with hey we’re going to go out and find some more players in their 20s who are proven NBA guys as opposed to learning and mistakes and young guys get down on themselves and they you know suck for a month and the vet knows to shake it off and move on to the next game and that can only be learned through experience that’s how not only but that’s how it tends to be learned sure that’s in the NBA book of 101 and how to get better exactly right okay you’re probably going to win more with 27y old kid guy guys than you are with 20-y old kids I want better players yeah I don’t know that keontay George is ever going to be better than deante Murray is but he just not going to be he’s not going to be in the next three years but what’s your timeline here what’s your horizon I got all the time in the world so did the Jazz apparently and if five years you might really regret the move what is keontay George going to become well it depends on what you win in those five years you know in in 10 years the Jazz may take one of the Timberwolves picks and really score big time and get a superstar does that mean they regret it what Minnesota did in in the short term so what what is Regret in five years the NBA isn’t built on what happens in five years that’s too long too many things change rapidly deals come together quickly so no one can say in five years you’ll do this or that because if you won in the interim what’s regret I mean did did the Jazz regret drafting Dante exom on Merit yes on its own but then they traded him for Jordan Clarkson do you regret that no so you can spin yourself into the ground if you’re worried about that Tom says it depends on the deta on the details of the trade how many picks are in this trade how many years are left on dejonte Murray’s contract well Deonte Murray’s signed so there there’s that he’s got uh three years and a player option for a fourth so he signed through 2027 and then he gets to decide what he does for the 2028 playoffs or postseason so that’s pretty good I I would find that encouraging in the deal you got three years to see what you can put together because they’re not just a Deonte Murray away from greatness but could he be a piece of the puzzle sure and so can George Dustin I like Deon Murray I’m not sure I’d gamble by giving up on Keon this early he might be really good I don’t think you’re giving up on them you’re looking at ways ways to make your team be better I think that the Jazz and our fans that we interact with all the time so desperate to get better and I understand that completely nobody wants to go through a long rebuild and everybody wants to root for a winner it’s just more fun it’s more fun today to be a Pacer fan than it is a jazz fan even though they had the heartbreaking loss um so you’re looking for anything right and you the other day oh Taylor Henrick he shot whatever his some percentage you pulled out that’s on from three but it was just it’s so minuscule that it doesn’t matter and George I he had an okay season mhm but the fact of we need bright spots so we’re going to focus on that so his bright spots because we’re so desperate for positive I think are brighter than they actually are get talked to him too much he’s okay he but right now you’re not going to win anything with him right now obviously uh but that doesn’t mean he can’t develop into something either I just think we’re overstating how good he might be right now based on well he had the ball in his hands and got a lot of playing time as he should I’ve got nothing wrong with that but I think we’re overestimating we did it with Kesler last year and a pumped the brakes on that because we’re so desperate for bright spots and if Taylor Henrick makes a move ho did you see that because we’re so desperate for something positive that that’s what we’re doing understandable I’m doing it too we’re all doing it it’s all true yeah fans do it the media do it it’s easy enough for people inside the organization to do it I’m as guilty as anyone if guilty is the right word and I don’t even know that it is for argument sake it makes the point right thank you and so yeah so I would hold off just saying well how good can he be I don’t know because I don’t I think a even said he doesn’t know if George is a starting point guard on a really good team and nor should they know so would you have made the deal or let the young guys roll and see what you got let the young guys roll it is it is here we go he can find a lyric for almost anything he’s lyric the young gu role come on that was teed up a little bit yeah I would say no not right now because Murray in San Antonio built himself up but he was like an advanced George in that situation the team sucked so he was they were trying to lose eventually fire away you know what I mean so what kind of player is he because then in Atlanta they had a disappointing season they traded for an allar and they were really excited to pair him with an All-Star In Trey young that’s why he would potentially be available because that thing didn’t work if Atlanta’s moving on and dumping salary they’ll collect young guys you can see the logic here we’ve already seen them in one salary dump with Collins I don’t think I don’t think Murray and I don’t think you care but uh for the people who do care Murray’s salary isn’t outrageous at 25 27 29 million over the next three years certainly you could move on for that if you chose you needed to I don’t think it completely jams you up you know he’s been capable of scoring 20 points a game now depending on what other moves they’re making but that’s what I’m talking about I know and who gets if they make other moves who gets the shots and does he keep doing that in losing situations he was capable of scoring 20 points a g and then I’ve got Hardy in my ear saying I don’t give a bleep about stats what can they do to help you win well right now Murray is 0 for two in those situation and it’s not to put the blame completely on him that’s not fair whatsoever but the fact is he’s played in two losing situations what do you do in winning situations you know and same thing with marketing it’s not not his fault that the team is doing what they’re doing but what would he do on a winning team where would he fit in there’s so many unknowns that my instinct is to say I don’t want to take another Atlanta Hawks castoff if they have Murray Collins marketing and evange is going big game hunting now do they have to use one of those three to get the big game whoever you whatever that deal looks like whoever they’re trying to acquire here maybe they have to turn around and move somebody again so if that leads to the the big game trade I’m okay with it I think you’re okay with that and if they bring in somebody else who’s decent but not big game then with four decent guys where are you going you know are you building up the assets so that somebody wants to join you because now your team is bigger in the rare case that maybe you do find an unrestricted free agent like and his team is you know at the luxury attack threshold I all these moves I I think you’re right about Murray this isn’t like some dramatic massive Game Changer we’ll probably talk it up too much like we talk up rookies too much because everybody’s desperate for Hope but if you pile another move or two on top of it do you have something well not if it has to happen there’s no question it has if they don’t then there’s really no sense in making the trade and making yourself older I will take in Atlanta Hawks cast off if the price is what the price was for Collins but the price will be higher if the price is George right now I’m not doing it if the price is Rudy Gay and whatever they got for Collins well that’s an entirely different story so even though he’s a hawks castoff you gave him castoffs they were castoffs for castoffs and your cast off was better than the cast offs you gave up but in this case George right now is not a castoff you have to see what you have with him and unless they make two not one but two big time moves they ain’t going anywhere next year right so George then has the opportunity to show us even more so so then we’re sitting here next year and we’ve got a really good opportunity to see where he fits in and how good he is because right now barring some change and there could be drastic change but assuming that he’s on the ball Club he’s going to get just as much if not more opportunity to show what he can do next season so then you’re going to get a really good idea I think they told us what they think of Kessler eh yeah I mean they jockeyed him in out of playing time starting bench uh and you know just I think that he’s probably going to be who he is maybe a backup center or a starting center who happens to be on a really good team you know Felton Spencer started for a bit uh because they had thank you John and Carl yeah right right he’s not carrying anywhere just stand there and defend the rim uh but George where’s it going to go and right now looking at the timeline and the projection now if they make some big time moves that might be a different story but I think that the most you can hope for is maybe one if you brought in two when they could easily make two moves but I don’t think that’ll be the what we would consider big game it’d be more like the John Collins John Collins is not big game now he made you better relative to what you gave up I don’t think anybody can argue that but he really didn’t make any difference on his own Merit so if you got two more of those guys and then you pair them with marketing and then you got Hendrick developing and you got George developing at a little bit of a higher rate well then you have an opportunity to check it out even more and that gives you more info to look at because you have to look at this realistically they’re two years into I would say minimally three if not foury year project I mean I already see two of the five teams that missed the postseason all together playing included two of those F five teams should be better next year I mean are the Jazz really going to jump over three four five six teams without this big game hunting deal coming those teams uh Memphis that was a mess of a season 27 wins but they should be much better than that next year Mor’s playing they will be get Mor playing be healthy and don’t have massive offc Court distractions play for for them and for himself that all that stuff is over with and he can get back to concentrating on playing ball and Houston was a 500 team at 41 and 41 and they got some young guys who can improve that whole uh internal development thing we used to hear here should apply in Houston uh Houston yeah be interesting to see what they do you know what I don’t know that they can make a Quantum Leap right now with the guys that they have but that they sit tight and is Oklahoma City leading the way you know for years the Spurs are talking we want to be like the Jazz okay well all right you did and you had stability and then you got lucky in the lottery a couple times and Away you went good for you guys uh you know what does Houston want to be do they want to just hey let’s just sit tight and then see what uh we had in the way that OKC did but at the same time maybe they think yeah you know we’re pretty close because if you’re if you’re going 500 in the NBA you’re pretty close to being a decent team no question about that and so do they make a move to to hasten it so I’d have to check back uh once we get to October to see what the roster looks like but yeah right now they’re clearly better than Jazz and no one’s going to argue that I do think the question with the jazz is if they’re going to use these three draft picks now you’ve got six guys who are first or second year which of those first or second year guys do do you want to just throw them out there and see if they can swim in the deep end or do you want to move one or two of those guys for veterans and then when your young guys are developing they don’t have to lose every night they get some positive feedback they win some games I don’t think that the ja are going to be able to make moves with draft picks exclusively I don’t think anybody’s clamoring to get their draft picks this year they’re not that good enough and this draft isn’t perceived as that good enough yeah you’re gonna have to be part of package deals that’s going to be complex and maybe involve multiple teams in those types of things to be able to swing that I I think they can do it but I think it’s going to be complicated I don’t think that you’re going to see the Utah Jazz are on the clock and then they’re they flash into their uh room and you got a and three guys on the phone and this and this and this we got time is ticking tick tick tick tick tick yeah let’s do it I don’t think that’s the way it’s going to be it seems to me that it’s going to be more of a thought out complicated deal and maybe maybe they can make that get the final uh ruling on the trade but they would have done so much leg work leading up to it and now as we know when deadlines are here that’s usually when things get really solved and decided if you haven’t done it it’s like the Mitchell thing two years ago they took their sweet time all summer and then the guys are starting to get together in Labor Day in their various cities in which they’re playing and that was the deadline there was no way Mitchell was going to show up at the basketball facility and start working out with the guys that just wasn’t going to happen and sure enough that’s when the deal got made so they can make a trade and a deal on draft night but they didn’t pick up the phone a and whomever didn’t pick up the phone that morning hey Cleveland what’s up no they’ve been working it forever and they finally decided these are our deals here’s the best one do it right and they even if it does happen with the deadline on draft night it’ll be the same thing they will have been talking about the deals probably most of June yeah yeah right right if they’re dealing a first year player then maybe that’s the kind of thing that happens in July so I don’t think people will be dying for their draft picks this year it’s going to be future picks and maybe maybe players that’s what Tom says you know how many picks in this deal was it keante and a first was it keante and a pick swap you know where maybe you’re moving back five or 10 spots or whatever it is uh how many more details were there in this it didn’t happen so something got proposed by one team the other teams like yeah I need a little more or I guess you it the other way I’ll do it I got to give you a little less I mean they didn’t quite have a meeting of the minds there were two bids out there and didn’t quite match up but they’re not ready to do it because those are two teams going nowhere so what was the pressure unless Atlanta felt pressure to be in some kind of postseason yeah I get your point but it was same thing with the Collins deal I was talked about at the trade deadline a year ago uh but it got done this summer so there’s plenty of time to visit and revisit and visit again but I would think that if you’re going to include somebody like a George it’s going to be a complicated deal and you know I’m a little hesitant to say Blockbuster I think that word is overused sometimes but I think it’s going to be a significant if it were to happen it would be a significant deal where it wouldn’t just be uh a straight uh a draft pick and a player for one of your draft picks and one of your players I think it’ll be deeper than that because this team needs a lot of stuff to catch the 10 teams that are in front of them and the two teams that were on the outside looking in with them yeah but on paper look like they’re going to be much better next year and you’ll get a little help because out of those 12 teams something will go wrong you know one team will get devastated by injuries maybe a couple will one team will surprisingly underperform but 12 teams is a lot of teams to pass and I think that I think the Jazz want to buzz they want to be talked about you know the buying the team was something to be talked about having Dwayne Wade was something to be talked about getting the All-Star game was something to be talked about wasn’t much to talk about last year got pretty quiet there at the end of the year now he got himself some more publicity with the hockey mhm and that type of stuff is intoxicating and to go on McAfee you can’t keep going on McAfee if team doesn’t go anywhere right so maybe it’s not about appeasing the fans who you think going to be disillusioned but that’s first cousin to it the buzz I mean the fans react to it the media reacts to it you react to it get your juices flowing yeah yeah they need something to give us a buzz right and drafting three rookies and Dash and two of them if not three of them with the Stars isn’t going to be it no one’s McAfee ain’t goinging again and it’s cool to be on McAfee and talk up the state and get yourself attention and rub shoulders with all these famous people because you have the cash to do it that’s all great but you got to have some reason to do it and we’re not going to do it again well you you still have the hockey team okay the hockey season will start and and then we’ll go uh and hockey doesn’t generate a lot of national publicity on its own anyway I don’t know you guys obsessed whether McAfee’s work wearing sleeves or not you and Jake Scott you talk about all comedy comedy every day pretty much over he’s in I’ve never once listened to the show uh but I understand it’s very very popular and to be honest you got to give a reason so I together hey they got Winter Haven moving on it’s the truth the jazz jazz reportedly were interested in acquiring Deon Murray in a deal that included keante George was that the right move and we discussing the pluses and minuses of whether they make cons if you will if you will and you pointed out last time they were talking to Atlanta they were talking at the trade deadline and they didn’t do it but they Revisited later and eventually the Collins deal happened yes could they revisit this later what would be the motivation for all of this and you were talking about ownership and multiple motivations they might have how about Danny Ray I don’t know if I can get used to that or not Danny a and the motivations Danny rage and motivations he might have and a long time ago you said when they were just starting this process sure this could go on forever but a is 65 and he’s not here to play the long game if he has a chance to speed it up he’s GNA do it he’s already taken control of his life you know leave Boston and the grind come here work with a guy that you know well an owner and also a GM you think that you know you can delegate some things golfing buddy exactly so they went golfing with a BYU recruit and then he committed to Utah or excuse me he committed to BYU that would be bad if they they don’t know Utah didn’t then he went to the Rival BW this Bo the whole line there yeah so if he’s going to move this along these draft picks and these 19 and 20 year olds are going to be flipped for 25 27 30 years olds th this is the kind of deal even if this spefic ific deal doesn’t work for whatever reason Atlanta wants too much and whatever these are the kind of deals that have to be made if you’re right about his timeline sitting around and waiting for a 19-year-old to mature to 31 and win that title in 12 years he’s not going to do that very often no but I don’t think there’s any panic and I don’t think he’s going to make moves just to satisfy himself I’m GNA die here I I mean I don’t think that 65 he can still do this job how long he wants to right he’s going to assess Talent more quickly than we are and we certainly saw that and better right and we certainly saw that with Kessler hey pump your brakes there I mean he’s okay you know’s he’s an NBA player that’s fine but let’s not sit here and talk about him like he’s the next Rudy goar and he’s going to win four defensive player of the years let’s just slow this thing down a little bit and I think he’s going to look a lot of these players who are draft and think you’re a nice player but he’s looking for someone special and we weren’t talking to him because he was in Boston then but it’s pretty clear even from a distance when he went out and got Tatum he thought I got somebody special here yeah I think he evaluated Tatum and and brown and he’s not evaluating these jazz players they can evolve they can get better and certainly if they really hit all of their potential they really could be somebody but it’s not likely that they’re going to achieve 100% of their potential and he’s got a better idea what’s happening with their work ethic and their development because we don’t they don’t allow us in the building and he’s in there all the time assessing that kind of stuff so he’s going to assess stuff better he’s going to assess stuff more quickly something kind of what do they call that in the uh in all the uh security videos that we all have to do that we’re all behind on and then Loyd has to remind us to do them uh the one where you basically tailgate your way in when someone else swipes the badge there’s a specific term for it but you got to make sure you only one you want a tailgate in there some player goes in and I’ll put on a mustache or you know a costume or something a big fake nose and glasses I already got that they’re real I think they’re deals like this coming they’re not they’re just not going to sit on all these young guys and yeah you want to go big game hunting but how many times you’re going to get to do that you’re going to have to make some moves that are good moves I know they want to make a move that’s a great move M I think you can do that have the opportunity to do that many times it’s question of you don’t want want to be able to be you don’t want to have to be in that position to do it because you already have a big game on your team and that’s what they got to get I think this is going to be a very interesting summer stuff is GNA happen yeah I think they’re feeling it man what are they feeling the certainly they have the desire to win but it’s it’s more than that I think they’re feeling the itch I don’t necessarily think they’re feeling the pressure I don’t I think pressure is the right word because so this is one not going anywhere this is one of those deals where no one puts more pressure on on me than me the GM isn’t going anywhere or whatever Danny Ray’s called the CEO right they’re not going anywhere so their jobs aren’t in any his job and the owner’s job is I know I don’t feel feel on external pressure so even though they’re not worried about keeping the fan base happy they’re feeling exactly what the fan base is they’re feeling itch to win man these want to win winning is so much fun losing bites winning is where it’s at you can all these guys are mil Danny Ray’s Got To Be A Millionaire by now obviously and the other guy hatb is’s a billionaire so they got the cash but they want to win it’s like that ishbia going to Phoenix he’s got money every which way possible and he’s making all these deals but to win right not they’re not making these deals he’s not making deals to win to to make money he’s winning the you can’t buy the feeling of winning you just can’t we’ve all been in locker rooms to be in that Bull’s locker room in 1991 when they won yeah the feeling that these guys had Krauss I’m right next to him he’s literally sobbing like a baby I’m two feet away from him but but even before that I mean think of you know Pablo on the show Friday when I was I was gone and you hear his postgame quotes Saturday and the difference I mean he’s the same guy but he doesn’t have the winning that winning feeling of Friday when he’s talking to you the way he’s got it Saturday night when he walks off the field the way when BYU basketball beat Kansas the way everybody was talking after the way the fan base felt the way the players and coaches talked after that game I think every Utah fan think of think of those three wins over USC the last two years you savored each and of them all three yeah and how was the feeling each and everyone and what was the feeling like when the clock H zero Oh What a Feeling right I was walking on sunshine that’s what I thought whoa and when’s the last time we know the last time that RSL the Cougars and UTS had that feeling when’s the last time the Jazz had that feeling it’s been it’s been a little while hasn’t it I’m gonna quote Prince and go 1999 no it’s been more recent than that okay I’m not it’s been more recent I’m going to go 2020 fall of 2022 and they started 10 and three I would go 2020 is that what you said uh no
