linkedin.com lockon MBA that’s LinkedIn lockon MBA to post your job for free terms and conditions apply every dayers you’re the best thanks so much for making lock on Jazz what it is all right let’s get right to it do you believe the Jazz realistically can take to get to spelled sorry I’m cutting and pasting uh Trey young in the Utah Jazz uniform and do you believe it would be worth it so I actually think that Trey young is available um and I believe that Trey young would not be outrageously expensive now at some point Atlanta has a problem that they they gave up an awful lot to get to Jon Murray and they their short picks and they probably need to do everything they possibly can to get that same thing back for Trey young to equalize what they had but I I don’t know that they’ll always that they’ll be able to get that now Trey Young’s got all sorts of issues does he get along with his teammates is he problem in the locker room is he’s bad defensively he’s also just great offensively he immediately puts you as a top 10 maybe even a to top five offensive player and if I’ve learned anything in this playoffs you just have to be elite at something you either have to be an elite Minnesota number one defense in the NBA Dallas number two one defense after the trade deadline Boston number one offense Indiana number two offense in the NBA you’ve got to be elite and Trey young is Elite the other thing why I would be all right with trading for Trey young is he would immediately be our first or second best player and at some point you just have to get better with players it’s like Zack LaVine is is probably the hardest discussion here Zack LaVine if is available when he doesn’t play they play much better he’s just good though like he’s a good player and at some point you need to have as much talent as you possibly can so that you can move your talent to go get the next piece if that makes sense like if we have Trey young and it doesn’t work out you can trade Trey young at some point now Trey young is also up for a contract at some point here in time but it’s not as soon as I thought and so that makes it a little bit more of an issue and also you know but on the other end guys are making 30 it’s just not going to be a big deal like when this $7 billion TV contract comes some of these things just are not going to be nearly as big a deal as they are now you’re going to have to extend Trey young at some point in time and then that changes probably how you feel about it um overall Trey young has got 43 next year 46 the year after and then he has a player option so you’d have him for two years before you’d have to um probably up him to 50 60 70 million you have to decide whether you want to do that but I’ll deal with that problem two years could the Jazz get their hands on Giannis could the Jazz get their hands on Giannis Giannis that would be insane could the Jazz get their hands on Yannis he seems pretty discontent in Milwaukee and he doesn’t seem to be the anti- Utah no nightlife kind of guy all right so Giannis is the big fish out there that’s the one that everyone’s sitting around waiting to see at what point does he tell Milwaukee that’s been enough Giannis has signed his max deal he’s worth every penny of it you don’t mind paying it and you’re just wondering when does it come and Giannis has 45 54 million uh 48 million next year 54 then 58 and he has a player option so he has three years left which is about as long as you can get any player I mean it’s the dream and New York’s trying to get it La is trying to get him everyone’s waiting for Giannis to say I want out so can the Jazz get their hands on Giannis in all honesty it would probably be difficult but do the Jazz have as much to offer Milwaukee as anyone yes has Giannis actually voiced this disconnect no so I don’t think this Giannis is happening anytime soon unless something goes wrong with Doc Rivers which is totally possible um in early in the season or they fail again and it happens in the next season when he has two years left and then he says I’m out I’m done and then Milwaukee is a disaster at that point so Milwaukee could go into free full rebu where Utah actually has the best package at that point and maybe they’re willing to do the Utah deal and then Giannis you end up with Giannis here uh for two years before he becomes a free agent if he’s willing to come here you know I I understand the no nightlife kind of guy he likes smoothies and all those kind of things and he seems to be a great character I also do think he’s a star and um and I think we’re proving frankly that stars don’t need to be in major markets Frank right Denver joic Shay Gil just Alexander Giannis and Milwaukee Kevin Durant back to Oklahoma City like I think we’ve proven that jaw and Memphis um are the most popular players in the league and so you don’t have to be in a Major Market anymore to be that popular but there’s a point where I think Giannis might actually maybe be an anti no nightlife guy but he also may decide that he needs to be somewh pick would you rather go the route potentially of looking at Brandon Ingram even though he’s been very I think that’s supposed to be injury-prone up to this point I’m a little more lukewarm on Brandon Ingram than some other players however same concept if we added Brandon Ingram tomorrow he’s our second best player right like he’s our second best player so I I you know there is a level here where if you’re trying to improve your team you go get your second best player and then Brandon Ingram is a free agent at the end of the year and if Brandon Ingram is not willing to stay hopefully you can move him in some capacity and get something for him or you move him at the trade deadline and get something for him I do think one thing that has not been talked about about this year’s playoffs is that Indiana went and got Pascal SE yakum at the trade deadline and Dallas went and got Daniel Gafford and PJ washt at the trade deadline and I think because the league has so much more parity and everyone is so much closer together than they’ve ever been before that what they’ve had a bigger impact those trades have had a bigger impact than they’ve ever had before and so it I think you’re going to see more and more inseason player movement there was a long time here where you go you went and made trade deadline deals and they just didn’t have any impact at all well nothing could be further from the truth this year Indiana literally made themselves an Eastern Conference Finals team and Dallas made themselves a Western Conference Finals teams and maybe an NBA Finals team so I think that that’s um I think that you idea that you actually could trade for somebody like either of these two names would you be a bit better trade Target Brandon Ingram or Jeremy Grant Brandon Ingram making one year 30 million Jeremy Grant four years 120 which is a better trade Target um Ingram is making one year 36 just so that we’re being exact here but I don’t mind the rounding up at all um but I just wanted to make sure we are exact and Jeremy Grant is actually three years left his last year’s a player option at 29 32 and 34 so they’re just a little different than that but I just want to make sure um but I do think there’s something to be said that you go get these guys here and then you might move them by February I think there’s going to be a much more robust Desire by teams to make trades because as this as the league gets narrow and narrow and narrower trades are going to be more impactful on the outcome of seasons and if you have a Jeremy Grant and he’s suddenly available and you can make a move you go get him and if there’s a Brandon Ingram and you can go get you might go get him um so I think that’s a really interesting one all right great one more trade possibility then the Pacers impact keante George and Stephen cast as we continue on today’s edition of locked on TV channels part of the lockdown podcast Network your team every day all right let’s get back to your questions they’re always great I super appreciate here’s just kind of a fun little trade could the Hawks attach AJ Griffin to Capella and trade him into the Jazz space no picks just getting AJ for saving Atlanta a bunch of money uh capella looked terrible at the end of the season so I’m not sure why I got it you’re trying to save my money and I don’t know that I totally think that AJ Griffin is worth taking that money but I do like AJ Griffin um AJ Griffin would be a young player who kind of has fallen out of favor who I might take a swing and look at and see what’s going on um he’s got a club option he’s got three this year Club option for six and then he’s restricted so you have his rights for a long time he’s just 21 he had great numbers out of college he had a bunch of injuries at Duke um I do like AJ Griffin so I like that capella is 22 million it’s actually not that big a deal you just have I don’t know what you do with him um but I like the idea so tip of the Hat the reason I brought this one up I like this like instead of going for Giannis go for AJ Griffin is actually probably a little bit more realistic this is an interesting question does the Pacers Eastern Conference run give more credibility to buying in early rather than doing a full multi-year tank so that’s I think Indiana’s impact is going to be massive this is not how I saw it as whether you know not doing a rebuild or not um I think their style of play is eye opening um they you know they were 34 and 38 then they went to 25 and 57 they went to 35 and 47 in their third year this year they got to 47 and 35 so I get they went three years without the playoffs after five straight years of first round exits under Frank Fogle and Nate McMill after their kind of early teens NBA uh Eastern Conference Finals team under vogle um they you know they’re similar marketus I think they’re very they they are kind of who we should actually watch most closely so in this sense I love this question I think Indiana I was really hoping they were gonna win some games in this series I don’t think they are I think they’re fascinating because one thing Tyrese Albert’s really really good but that’s not I don’t think anyone expect him be all NBA Miles Turner they held on to for a long time they picked up a bunch of pieces around the fringes and kind of maximized them all and then they play with this electrifying style um and so I think that’s super interesting and wondering whe what kind of impact that have their their books are interesting so Tyrese halberton is now going to be incredibly underpaid at 42 45 49 52 now he did just get 41 million extra um and I don’t know if those are included in those numbers and then Miles Turner is at n is at 20 which is a bargain n Smith is three years at 11 which is a bargain McConnell’s at nine Benedict maen is at seven jice Walker the rookie is at six you know Shephard’s at two n hard’s at two like they they just have these guys that are under control for a long time financially so they’re in a really interesting situation also financially of of what they are and who they are um I think they’re going to have a massive impact on things and I think that this is actually what the NBA is trying to create is the parody is enough that someone like Indiana gets fortunate they got like they got fortunate the Knicks are a better team sorry I’m sure that’s GNA Drive some Pacer fan crazy but I do feel like if we’re honest the Knicks were probably the better team they just got injured and then Milwaukee had a ton of injuries too so you know there is some level of being fortunate here that they came out of the six seed and won these two series but they did so let’s not you know and they’re having the experience and I think that’s going to have a massive impact on the NBA I really do after seeing him for one year do you believe keay George’s ceiling is higher or lower than yourself in the front office saw what would be your best case scenario best player comp I gotta be honest I am not sure I left this year with a clear understanding of that um as I have said I’m just speaking for myself and then I’ll I can’t I don’t think I can speak for the front office a as I said I I really wanted to wash every minute I saw him play without Lowry Markin and without Jordan Clarkson out of my brain I thought it was too much um the positives where he looked like he belonged the positive where he had an off the bounce three shot which is frankly vital we’re seeing that in the playoffs the negatives are I think he has to play way way harder and be far less cool but that’s youth um and the negatives they shot 39% 33% from three which is like borderline scary there aren’t a lot of players who’ve had a rookie year of 39 and 33 that have gone on to have a lot of NBA success um again I if I could wash out the minutes without Lowry and Jordan I probably don’t have 39% and 33% shooting so if I’m totally honest I I actually a year in don’t know I mean on one level he’s 64 185 and he’s got Pizzaz he’s got a bounce and he’s got a little something to him and you know every word we have about him is that he loves the game and takes it very seriously and you know the upside coming out of the draft was that he could be Jamal Murray um Jamal M’s pretty special so I I guess that’s your ceiling still um but then you know 3933 there’s a lot of guys have done that that just don’t don’t play it out um 39% from the field 33% from three and so then who’s your you know your next compos Jared bis who is you know a run-of-the-mill you know long NBA career like I think sometimes you say somebody who’s not an NBA star and people like take that as a criticism I think Jared BS played years and 600 games in NBA he was a little 63200 and you know kind of bounced between a 20 game a year starter and scored 10 points I mean ke’s G be in the NBA for a long time um so that’s those are probably that’s probably the range right like the the downside range on him is probably Jared bis who in his opening year of the NBA shot 37% in Portland and 26% and kind of got better and better figured out bounced around a little bit uh and Jamal Marie is the upside but I I honestly don’t know and I’m super curious on your question and I don’t know if I have the I don’t know if I think that the team knows yet um so it’s really it’s a great question because I do think a huge part of what the Jazz do in this draft has to come down to what they really truly believe on Keon George and and I I don’t know if they I I would be really curious to know if there’s a consensus on that your metric on Ste Stephen Castle are low does his performance of the combine make you think he could be an outlier from your metrics I mean I think you have to take every piece of data and information and use it as simply that like as a piece of data in the it’s always like when people say well do you believe in numbers well if you don’t use numbers in your in your analysis you’re negligent if you use only numbers and don’t use eyes you’re negligent so if you don’t actually look at what does at the combine I think you’re negligent if I was the Jazz I certainly would want to work out with him in person and be able to look at a bunch of things on a shot and figure out and put our put people with him I mean I watched the Providence games like they just left him open rudely because they didn’t think he could make shots well if that happens in the NBA it’s really hard to play um so I I think the you know I think the question you have to use it so do you do is it make me think he could be an outlier there have not been any outliers that have done have played in there has not been an outlier to the numbers in the five years that I’ve run that have shot as poorly as Stephen Castle has in his first year and then became a good shooter in the NBA um Marcus Smart we talked about the best analysis but Marcus Smart is not a good shooter in the NBA so I doubt it but you have to take that into consideration and I would hope that the Jazz with their scouting staff has an in-person meeting with him that gives them even a better grip and better grasp than that um so interesting all right more draft questions coming which playoff team might break itself up 240 minutes Lowry Markin and some draft stuff continue as we continue on today’s edition of locked on Jazz Today’s Show is brought to you in part by our friends over lock on Jazz your first listen of the day by the way we’ll have great immediate coverage on Minnesota and Dallas tonight postcast at lockon sports Minnesota Dallas Nick angstead is there so if you want a little extra coverage you can get it there all right let’s go back to your questions you guys are so great I super appreciate the every dayers out there I really like Devin Carter is it more useful to compare his freshman numbers to Castle’s numbers yes it is you’re very smart this is where Kevin Pelton and his number analysis um is ESPN NBA draft numbers analysis is very very good um because he will do a lot of that stuff so in Kevin’s analysis Donovan kingan is the number one player reed Shepard is two Alex SAR three Zack ed4 Zakir rashar is five jacobe walk Walter is six Rob Dillingham is seven Johnny furpie is eight who’s currently about 28th nicolea topic is nine Stephen Castle is 10 um from a cisal standpoint he says Castle’s 27% three-point shooting is a concern but he was solid at the free throw line 76% and shot well enough from two to be reasonably efficient coler’s 11 McCain is 12 kashon George who I’m 100% against us drafting because I don’t want Keon and kashon George uh Kyle lapowski is 14 salonin is 15 keep going down and you don’t get Devin Carter until 20 um so um he uh he talks about his rebounding skill at 63 being kind of one of his best stats um there so that’s kind of just to give you he drops there the one that’s most interesting on pelton’s numbers is Cody Williams is only 20 is number 27 who’s obviously thought of around 10 and is much lower on the numbers than anyone else which of any playoff teams are going to blow up their roster and which of their players would the Jazz be interested you know I thought this was an interesting question because I actually came up with none I mean I think New Orleans has got to shuffle the deck a little bit right but does anybody have anyone I’m forgetting that we really think their playoff failure this year means that they’re going to like alter who they are as a team so New Orleans getting swept by Oklahoma City I think they probably have to Phoenix has done it with the coaching staff Mike buer is going to take over the Lakers don’t have a lot of flexibility on what they’re going to change and I don’t think the Clippers are letting Paul George go for some major overing so I I don’t see anything in the west where I think there’s a major overhaul Philadelphia I don’t suspect is changing many things Milwaukee pretty hamstrung on what they can do Orlando needs to put a little bit more in and maybe Miami is the one team who could have a major change now there always seems to be change so this is probably you know somewhat an inaccurate observation on my end but that is truly how it feels right now is that there is not a major huge change about to happen on any of the eight teams that lost in the first round of the playoffs and on the teams that are lost in the second round certainly not Oklahoma City I mean Cleveland’s going to have an overhaul because Donovan’s going to get traded but Denver’s not overhauling and I think the Knicks think they’re close so really interesting like we wanted chaos in the playoffs so kind of disrupted everything I don’t think we got it do the Jazz have 240 minutes on the roster and how far do we get if we add a top 10 player this team well two things a top 10 player is really really almost impossible to get and they’re great so we would be very good look what happens to Indiana the minute Tyrese halberton becomes a top 10 player and Tyrese halberton was I think third Team all NBA so he might not even be top 10 um 20 we’re not close to 240 minutes right now if we’re really honest about it we’re unless I’m missing something we’re not close to 240 minutes I mean as we’re Cur there’s a lot of work to do as we’re currently constructed I would assume I don’t think this is a like crazy comment like who do you think Vegas is going to have as a higher win total us or Portland and who do you think Vegas would have as a higher win total us or San Antonio and I’m assuming Houston would have a higher Vegas win total than we would after last year so I mean I think we’re sitting at 13 14 or 15 in the west as our roster currently constructed I mean proven NBA rotation players Lowry Jordan Colin John Collins Keon and Walker right on the edge am I missing someone maybe Chris dun I think he might be a proven 12 14 minute night rotation player so yeah we’re short but that’s all right I mean that’s kind of where we are like I don’t mean that negatively but like yeah we’re short how does the evolution of multi full max players being crippled to team building influence extension influence the extension negotiations of lowry what I think he’s saying is like the fact that big number players aren’t advancing the playoffs I I don’t think it has an impact um I think the Jazz understand that Lowry is you know a second or third best player on a championship team and they’re going to try to pay him appropriately to that um so I think that’s what they’re trying to do can the can marinin right now be a second or third best player on a finals team what’s our path to get players if not how old will marinin be by the time we have them so I want to address this because of the last concept here I’m beginning to hear this a a lot well by the time we’re good low be to if we play that game you’ll just never be good like if you’re always trading your best player because the rest of your team’s not up to Snuff yet you’re just always going to be bad so I mean what Danny said in the press conference I think’s really important is that we’re sitting here trying to figure out you know we’re trying to wait and go big game hunting when big game becomes available and obviously the world hasn’t laid out that way for us so far in the playoffs this year and so therefore but you can’t then just decide so that’s the first thing and he and Danny’s point is you got to have some players if you get the big game you can’t then be three years away you got to have some good players on the roster right then so if you get the big game hunting player then you’re able to you’re able to immediately pump it up and maybe make one or two other adjustments but you immediately are able to pump it up and go so that that’s that’s what I would say is like number one of this then number two I would say is that you just can’t decide like well we’re four years out so we got to trade our best player if you just you’ll just do that every three years it just doesn’t I keep I keep seeing that and it can’t work that way do you favor swing for the fence’s player at 10 or do you take a player that might have a more defined role but less upside I take a player who has a more defined role and less upside I know so boring but the data tells me that basically at 10 you have a 50% chance of getting a rotation player in the the NBA and if you have a rotate 50% rotation player and you have someone you’re pretty certain going to be a rotation player I’m taking him because there’s a 50% chance you’re not getting it final questions love hearing delock 09 on the Western Conference preview commercial I got to admit it I do too it’s cool I’m not lying I think it’s cool my kids think it’s cool are there rumors of another Rebrand coming up this up have you heard anything about it I have not but it does feel that way right yellow disappeared halfway through the year which I was bummed I actually liked yellow I’m the person out there who liked it me and Lowry um feels like it be fun we’re purple purple’s back it is locked on Jazz have a great one thanks very much for tuning in we now send you the first ever 1. You, me, and Lauri all love the yellowđź’› The only jersey I bought last year. Too bad they stopped wearing them halfway through. Would love to see them make a comeback. 30:29

  2. Trae young would be great to have but we would have to give up a lot. He is 6’1” with a 6’2 wingspan so he’s a good fit offensively but we would need defensive players on the floor with him. Rob Dillingham is 6’1 6’3 wingspan and could be there at 10. I think we should try to get another deal like when we got John Collins for very little.

  3. Ingram makes sense but Jazz would also need a good wing shooter Ingram plus Buddy Hield be ok and give Jazz a 5-8 seed

  4. Devin Carter may only be 6'2" but he has a 42 in vert and a 6'7" wingspan.

Dude can play on/off ball, shoot, defend, and is high energy. He can play along George or run a 2nd unit.
