GET UP | Windhorst updates Donovan Mitchell’s future after the Cavaliers’ firing of J.B. Bickerstaff

media it’s time for a windy watch and this is a on-topic windy watch there was a firing in the NBA yesterday Wy what should we make of it yeah so Cav’s president uh Kobe Alman is going to have a press conference today trying to explain his rationale find fire and JB bicker staff if you look at the last four years they went from uh Lottery team to playin to playoffs to second round and they still made the coaching change and what Kobe is not going to really probably be able to articulate but was absolutely a factor here is the Donovan Mitchell piece every decision the Cavs make between now and when Donovan Mitchell makes his decision on a contract extension in July is going to be wrapped around that and Donovan Mitchell and JB bicker staff’s relationship was something that concerned the Cavs it was absolutely a factor in the decision to fire him they’re going to protect their star player that is what they’re going to do but this this coaching move and the person that they hire will be Donovan Mitchell related and when they do meet with him after the finals because that’s when they’re allowed to talk to him and and aler the contract extension the new coach and the new coach’s plan and the and the offseason roster will be a big part of that presentation is your is your feeling Jay that Donovan Mitchell is going to commit longterm there again for those who’ve not been following this there really three options Wendy correct me if I’m getting any of this wrong one of them is that he signs a long-term contract extension in Cleveland great another is that I guess there’s really the two options he he defini he doesn’t and they face a decision of holding on one more year and hoping that he you know decides after that year that he’s happy there or trading him and make sure they don’t wind up losing him for nothing I should have said two options those are the two options which do you think winds up happening but I do not think Donovan Mitchell is going to be in Cleveland long term I don’t um you know I I think Kobe Alman was put in a really precarious situation obviously because you you got your star player if he did have a great relationship with JB biera but I mean biera was a really good coach right he got his team very far um I I think it put Cleveland in a difficult situation where I I don’t think they’re going to win this thing when it’s all said and done my personal feeling that’s why I don’t know anything it’s my personal feeling Monica I want to ask a question to the radio voice of the New York Knicks because everyone and I know thought that Donovan Mitchell was going toy don’t even do it stop stop no that tell me why Saed why because you Jaylen Brunson and Donovan Mitchell do not play together like and not because they don’t have great basketball IQ but it’s not a good fit you’re going to two six2 guards like it just doesn’t work to me it’s just not a good fit in terms of the style of basketball that they both play basketball like you sure they could do it but to me that takes away from the identity of a Tom tibo Le Nicks team and that actually was the reason why they they they dragged their feet on making the trade two years ago when it seemed like it was a fade Complete because there was there was an analytics portion of that front office with the Knicks that didn’t like the matchup because remember they had just brought in Jaylen Brunson but I think in Donovan Mitchell’s situation now you’re only as loyal as your options and I don’t know if he has many other options that he can consider when you take away the Knicks as a place that he did want to land so the best option might be to stay there and let them build around you in well wi winman final word what might those options be in a world in which he doesn’t resign you had told us last week that teams are already readying their offers who will The Usual Suspects be here there would be a handful of teams who would prepare offers if he became available and all of those teams would be willing to sign him to the $200 million extension that the Cavs are will to offer the key a key huge Point here is because he was traded in the middle of this contract the Cavs do not have the super max Advantage even though he’s made all NBA and if he if he was still on the Jazz he could sign a supermax but because he was traded he loses it that means the Cavs lose that advantage and that’s a factor here that is a play a factor in the way and by the way that’s not a surprise the Cavs knew that when they traded for him but that’s a factor and how he is looked at he they they don’t have as much home field advantage as other players in this situation my the only person who finds the supermax the most interesting contractual element in professional sports today the super max is a fascinating thing to follow he’s not eligible for one it could went off Mike Brien at the mic points theod Brown knocks it down he’s got 40 on a way to top off a magnificent night for Jaylen Brown that ties his playoff career high and I voted for Jaylen Brown for all NBA put it on record again so did I put that on record too Jaylen Brown got his $300 million contract last season this postseason he’s earning every penny career playoff highs and points per game and shooting percentage the only player in Celtic postseason history to average those numbers you see Kevin mcale and so while Brown might be playing his best ball ever he feels underappreciated I mean I watch guys get praised and anointed I feel like it’s half as talented as me on either side of the ball um but at this point in my life I just embrace it you know it comes with being who I am and what I stand for and I ain’t really changing that um so I just come out and I’m grateful to step out on the floor each and every night and put my best foot forward I get better every single year and whether people appreciate it and not it is what it is was there any U motivation for you um after hearing that you didn’t make in all NBA team no I would to say that what would you say I mean we two games from the from the finals so you know honestly I don’t got the time to give a oh that’s a great answer right now that is a great answer that’s called answering the question without answering it and then actually delivering a pretty good finish to it yes he does have more important business this team needs to seal the deal go ahead and win the championship But You’re darn right he is aggravated that the people in the world did not pick him as one of the 15 best players in the NBA and he should be and and by the way like I look the team doesn’t underappreciate J jayen brown right they they wouldn’t have given him a $286 million contct that’s a lot of appreciation if they didn’t right but as it relates to the media what do we talk about every single day we always talk about this being Jason Tatum’s team when will Jason Tatum Crack the Code Jason Tatum’s first team all NBA Wendy made a great point in hour number one Jaylen Brown’s numbers are very similar to Jason tatums how come he’s not number two on all NBA number three he got blitzed by Tyrese hurn this is exactly why he is pissed off in this moment against a guy who is third Team all NBA when he feels like he deserves to be I love the delivery I think all of that was important for him because it’s his way of letting you know that it is but I’m not going to say it so you can think I’m distracted by it right I’m he what he’s doing is talking with his game right now but it’s helping that this series doesn’t have a matchup for him so he’s attacking the fact that okay you’ve got n on Tatum he’s going to struggle in that match up cuz neith is a good Defender they’ve got nobody to guard me so I’m going to be in attack mode and I thought he was so aggressive in game one at the very beginning sending that message that they have no one to stop me the rest of it though when it comes to you know him being underappreciated the money tells you he certainly is appreciated the accolades don’t matter right now because for him for Tatum for everybody else on that team the only thing that matters in this run that they’ve been on they’ve won 51 games 57 games 63 games they have to win the L O’Brien trophy when he’s holding that then all that stuff doesn’t matter clearly and look one could say they had the best record in the east by 14 games the best in the league by seven games how in the world do they not have two players who made one or another all NBA team and again I did vote for him as did Wendy for all NBA this year that said Monica here’s what I will ask you in most s we love making the Batman and Robin thing right yic and Murray is a Batman and a robin um Kyrie and and and and and Luca a Batman and a robin like I think the world perceives Boston to be Jason Tatum is Batman and Jaylen Brown as Robin but candidly when you watch them every single day half the time it doesn’t really feel like that what do you think of that Monica I I understand that sentiment in fact I think to a couple of seasons ago having a conversation with a friend that was in Boston about that maybe being a misconception right if if you follow this team dayto day I think when you look at Jason Tatum’s skill set you look at uh the marketing pieces all of that stuff you tend to look at him as the one right he’s a little bit taller than Jaylen um brown maybe a slightly different skill set in terms of being able to create off the bounce but it is certainly within reason to be like actually and I think Jay has used this phrase Jaylen Brown is more of sort of the heart and the tenacity of this team because he’s a guy that tends to be a little bit more aggressive all in all I think he didn’t make uh all NBA partly because we took this Boston s team for granted they were so good head and shoulders Above the Rest nobody questioned whether they would come out of the East and so you kind of almost become lazy when you assess how talented they are individually at each position but if somebody told me that they were willing to take Jaylen over Jason I could not argue with that I think it comes down to a little bit to stylistic preference because both of them are fantastic let me get the win man in what do you think of this Wendy we’re still taking them for granted they’re 10- two in the playoffs six of the wins have been by more than 15 points um you know there were some people who were upset that Jaylen Brown didn’t make the old defensive team this last week and he you know there were two Celtics on those teams Derek white and Drew holiday and that he just missed out on that that’s just the nature they’re on a very good team they have to spread the wealth around and ultimately I think one of the fascinating things about Jaylen Brown is he has had in some incredible playoff moments and he’s had some bad playoff moments where he’s contributed to really bad losses so he and Jason Tatum are both in this together I I are real togetherness and if they’re complaining it’s not because the other’s getting credit it’s because they don’t think that the team has got enough credit and everybody on the world says but prove it prove it and win at the highest level and that’s what we’re watching him do by the way it was just last year where people were talking about Jaylen Brown can’t dribble remember that whole thing you let’s stop giving DC Comics Love by the way no more DC Comics this is Marvel these are the Avengers this is Captain America and Iron Man that’s what these guys can be and they have gotten a lot closer this season you know it’s interesting it this when when you think back on things historically the first year I did countdown so that’s two years ago we did the show from Boston and the number one topic was do they need to break up Tatum and brown is this will this group ever possibly win together and then literally from the day we left there they went on this insane hot streak they wound up the two- seat in the East and and they have been the best team in candidly consistently they’ve been the best team in the NBA ever since they’re just missing the one piece of it that will solidify everything and right now there’s six wins away tomorrow fore fore spee [Music] spee e for for for [Music] [Music] [Music] for for for [Music] h e for see for [Music]
