Tough break for his family. He seemed like a really good dude.

He was a big part of the greatest team of all time. The 86 Celtics team. Let’s go win this chip for him, Bill, Tommy and everybody else.

Well I’m sad. We lost one of the most unique people I think we’ll see in some time.

    Damn, RIP

That’s horrible to hear. He was one of my favorite announcers ever and just a great guy in general.

when I was a videographer at Boston’s government access channel I found myself standing next to Walton at Bill Russell’s statue unveiling ceremony. I’m 6’2” and even I felt so damn tiny next to him.

I met Bill at an Other Ones show (a Greatful Dead spin off ) in Oakland about 20 years ago. We were on the floor watching P-Funk open, at the intermisson my friends and I were walking to the concourse and I noticed Bill was in front of me hobbling up the stairs. I told him I lived in LA when he was at UCLA and that I patterned my game after him (passing from the high post, rebounding, outlet passes…), the Cs were my favorite team and the 86 team was the best ever. He was very gracious (I’m sure he heard that stuff all the time), we shook hands and parted ways. Later on I saw him on stage with the Other Ones. I can’t say I enjoyed his commentary much, but I Loved his game.

I highly recommend everyone watch his ESPN biographical series. It really did a fantastic job of showing how unique and awesome he was. He made the world a more interesting place. RIP Big Red

I know he was on the ‘86 Celtics team but that ‘77 title with the Blazers is what made him a legend. Rock on to the next life, Bill.
