How the Miami Heat Can Get the ECF Belt Back From the Celtics | Miami HEAT Podcast
Donovan Mitchell’s contract extension continues to be the focal point of the NBA offseason and a recent update provides a little Clarity on what could happen next for Miami plus the Rival Boston Celtics win the Eastern Conference so how does the heat build a team capable of beating them we break that down and some trade ideas on today’s episode of Locked on [Music] heat you are locked on heat your daily Miami Heat podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day yes you are locked on heat your everyday podcast on the Miami Heat whether you’re tuning in on YouTube Odyssey or your favorite podcast app thanks for making locked on heat your first listen every day Monday to Friday hope everybody listening had a great Memorial Day weekend and we are back here on a Tuesday I’m West Goldberg editor at Allan heat.com here with David rill both of us credential heat media members psyched for today’s show this Celtics won the Eastern Conference Finals on Monday night the Heat have officially lost the belt David uh we knew this was coming uh but now that the east playoffs are over and seeing how the Celtics got through what do you think they he’d have to do to reclaim the Eastern Conference title next season it’s a tough one uh you know I I pose this question to you because you know you saw what the Minnesota Timberwolves did in order to be able to get past the Denver Nuggets and at least that was an interesting premise for like building a team now of course it doesn’t work 100% and we’re seeing what happens to the Wolves now against a very good Mavs team but you look at what the Celtics have been able to accomplish and look they’ve been near the top of the Heap for a long time now whether they’ve been able to get past Miami or not and that hasn’t been the case a couple times they are for the in the finals for the second time in three years so you have to look at them in this retooled version of them as probably the best team in the east at least on paper for a while and and Miami has to do something in order to get past them and I don’t know that they have they don’t have the roster for it currently they’re close they’ve been able to have some superhuman performances from some role players and Jimmy Butler in particular but I don’t know that they’re necessarily built to beat the Celtics team I think retooling the back court is a key priority for them because you look at what Drew holiday now as a defensive player and a guy who can put up some occasional offense and Derek white pains me as I say this but he’s been great in the postseason and doing all the little things the things that Celtics fans love the things that Heat fans would love if he was wearing a Heat jersey so and also shooting 40% from yes hitting the game winner in game four like like those kind of big shots he hit those against Miami he’s hit those against Cleveland like he’s been great like you have to give him his flowers for this and a hell of a defensive player and a guy who’s tall enough to be able to block shots you can’t really post him up uh you have to find a way to beat him and I I don’t know that Miami has that they don’t have the offense right now I I would say to me the priority would be retooling the back court so that you can have more explosive offense that would keep them on the toes certainly they don’t have that right now I think with Rosier and hero assuming that those would be the two starters moving forward next year so I I don’t know I don’t know I honestly I I kind of POS this just to kind of talk it through because I’m sure what Miami can do like Jimmy is a main State bam is fine obviously I think he’s obviously had some success against the Celtics in the past but you probably need more size a little bit more depth and certainly in the back court I think is a priority where do you see this in terms of retooling this roster so they can beat Boston more easily it’s got to be the priority I think you do need to start with the very fact that this is the team to beat the Boston Celtics are the team to beat they have the belt they’re the team to beat and they’ve earned it and Walky is going to be back next year and better right after I’m going to assume you know after one year of getting the Giannis Dame like they’ll probably be a little bit better in the playoffs and obviously Giannis will be hopefully for them healthy so that would go a long way too and you still got the Sixers lingering there with their Max cap space and who knows what’s going to happen there but no matter what those teams do and what they look like going forward next year it’s Boston that wears the belt right now they’re the team to beat they’ve earned it and so in the East everybody’s got to go through Boston that’s the ultimate boss batt battle so I think you’re right you have to think about okay how can we construct a team not just to beat Boston but to get through the East too when our rivals in Philadelphia are going to get better Milwaukee has gotten better and will be better and you could argue that the heat are going to get worse because you mentioned role players stepping up in the Eastern Conference Finals well the one that stepped up the most is going to be a free agent and could leave in Caleb Martin who knows what’s going to happen with Haywood heith who is Miami’s best defender on Jason Tatum yes like before before you even consider what you have to add you first have to consider what you were what’s going out the door and there’s going to be a talent drain happening for the heat that they’re going to have to Grapple with and and find a way to make up for and I do think that as much as we love Caleb Martin and Haywood heith and stuff like that to me when I see this Celtics team and you sort of hit on it it’s depth that’s what sets that team apart and real depth not like oh we got a bunch of Caleb Martin Haywood High Smiths kind of dep no real top 100 player in the NBA depth that’s what they have they’re starting five what you’ve got Tatum’s a top 15 guy Brown’s a top 20 guy porzingis is a top 60 probably guy yeah 60 70 yeah uh when healthy he’s certainly up there you know white and holiday are gonna be up there too white white is a top 40 guy to me and Drew holiday is probably at this stage in his career top 60 70 guy too right there with bringas at this point in his care that’s a starting lineup yeah and and star you got Horford who might also still be like in the 90s in terms of or Fringe like right behind the 100 point mark there best players in the league and so that’s and you think about the heat you got Jimmy Butler who’s a top 15 guy for now who knows how long that he’s going to be 35 years old that’s a real thing that you have to consider and he will be when those rankings come out later this summer he will not be because of the time he missed this year because of the fact that he didn’t have like he was ranked 20 something I think this year in terms of like the overall top 100 list and that was coming off a ridiculously historic run in last post I’ve seen him as high as like 11 12 but still like to the point is he’s gonna he’s gonna slide you got hero who’s probably a top 100 guy I think if you were playing a sixthman role his ranking would actually be higher if he was on a start whatever Roser is kind of similar to Hero uh Bam’s a top 15 guy top 20 guy however you want to Define it that’s it that’s it and and and when and the drop off is so Steep and so maybe haime maybe Nico can get into that conversation but you’re talking about a Celtics team that everybody is in their Prime right now and those guys are far from it so I think that’s part of it is going and getting Allstar as much depth as you might lose with the Caleb Mars and the hwood high Smiths potentially walking out the door if you get a star one star makes up for a lot of that that the the several role players walking and so that’s what you have to do if you’re the heat you’ve got to go get a store and like obviously easier said than done it’s the thing that we’ve been talking about about forever around here but it’s why this team has been so adamant about going and getting a guy like Lillard or going and getting a guy like Durant or Mitchell and they’ve got to do it but besides that too and doesn’t have to be one Fell Swoop we saw it with what Dallas has done you go get your second star and Kyrie irank to pair with your main star in Luka donic and then you have an opportunity to retool around them and you go get a grant Williams and it doesn’t work out you swap him out for PJ Washington you trade a pick for uh Daniel Gafford you draft Eric Lively like you get all these right things that you give yourself a six-month Runway to do all these things but it’s got to be with urgency it’s got to be with planning it’s got to be with intent in terms of how the front office is going to build it and that’s what they have to do I also think so you’re right the scoring to your point David you have to be able i w you watch that first round series with Jimmy Butler without Jimmy Butler I don’t care the heat were going to have a hard time scoring against the Celtics they need more scoring talent that is consistent I also think that they need more size and in the front Court too and I look at not just the Celtics but all the teams that have gotten this far and all of them have 48 minutes of consistent Center play it’s not Elite all the time but it’s not negative and I think what has bit the heat in the butt a couple of times over the last few years has been the fact that their backup center has been so bad and it is a minus and it’s what by the way bit the Nuggets this time around too is that when their Center goes off it’s so easy it’s a steep drop off it’s the it’s the biggest it’s the it’s the most important backup position in the sport because it’s the easiest thing to say that guy’s a weak link drag him into a pick and roll and we’re going to get an opening every single time it’s easier to hide like a backup point guard or a backup Wing somewhere on the corners of the court it’s hard to hide a backup center and all the teams that have gotten this far have really good backup centers including the Celtics who haven’t even needed their starting center for this entire playoff run so they’ve got Al Horford and then they went out and got a Xavier Tillman at the tread deadline like they said okay just in case you know they had this just in case guy the heat need a really good they need a they need a backup center and I thought maybe they they they thought were they were getting that with Thomas Bryant they didn’t get that Kevin Love that’s why I think he was so important during the regular season yeah but in the playoffs he just he’s a little bit more exposed I think defensively you need a higher level uh you need higher level play from that position can the duo of Jimmy Butler and bamama bio be a strong enough Superstar or Star level two or however you want to phrase it that you look at that as your core and build around them because I know the acquisition of a superstar seems like you know that wouldn’t just make so much sense but at the same time if you’re looking at what Boston’s done you know their stard Duo is are the two JS obviously and then it’s the matter of getting the right players around them and I think a lot of Heat fans see Miami in a similar situation now obviously the two players are very different and I think the scoring is the difference there and that both Brown and Tatum are capable of shooting from the perimeter whereas bam and Jimmy Butler are not I mean yes they kind of dipped their toes in that water but they’re not prolific scorers either of them they’re they’re different they’re different model players so you have to find the right complimentary players around them and I don’t know that necessarily acquiring a superstar might make sense or it might not even be feasible or possible so it’s all about getting the right role players to kind of play around them and right now Miami has limited options in that regard you’re I I do think you need to ask the role players to take on that scoring load has been Miami’s problem and that would be where I kind of fall back on you’re right like Jin B is not that 30 point per game score B matab bio’s not they’re different kind of superstars but the problem with having two of those guys is that neither one of them is a consistent scorer and I think that’s my argument of why the Jimmy Butler b a bio T Duo has been very successful but almost in spite of the fact that they don’t fit well right right and it’s that’s almost a testament to the work that they’ve done and the team and the role players and everything like that but on paper those those those two players do not comp each other yeah they don’t they’re not outside neither one of them is an outside shooter like it doesn’t make sense and so they and that’s why I think people have been so like quick to criticize Tyler hero or Terry Roser or Kyle Lowry or whoever it is like we need more from you and it’s like well you only need more from them is because one of your two stars is not a 30o per game scorer star they’re both sort of the same thing and that they do all the little things and their Elite defensive players and they score 20 points per game in a way that nobody else does and they’re physical and all these things but um so I I I would be hesitant to say those are your two guys and like I said it’s been good enough I don’t know how long how much longer it will be good enough Jimmy Butler’s getting up there you know it’s so it’s getting to the point now where Jimmy Butler is up for a new contract in the next couple years and B matab bio is going to be up for his max extension that he’s going to get and what do you do with that I think that there might have been a time like in 2022 I always I thought that was the best Heat team that was not even the one that made the finals but I thought it was the best Heat team because they went out and got PJ Tucker they went out and got Kyle Lowry who still had something to give at that point and all these things they made those Fringe moves and then just didn’t work out at the end they lose in game seven by a single shot and I you and I agree on this if they’re in the finals I think they’ve got a real good chance against that Warriors team so um you know maybe that was the window for that group the way that you want to build around it that said if you are able to go get that 30 point per game score and combine him with Jimmy Butler and bamat bio that to me I still think that you could keep the window open a little bit but you you got to move away from the role player model because it’s just not going to work anymore I think right no no age but you on them um right they’re not supposed to be carrying your team the way Caleb Martin did in the Eastern Conference finals last year right uh speaking of stars we’ve got some Donovan Mitchell news we’ll get to after this unlocked on heat today’s episode is brought going to explain that here in a second according to Cleveland sports columnist Terry Pluto who’s been working that market forever uh the C the Cavalier forever the the Cavaliers will not risk losing Donovan Mitchell for nothing and will trade him if he does doesn’t accept their extension offer this summer rather than letting him play out next season on an expiring contract and again I think most people say well duh because that’s what everybody’s expected but we haven’t gotten this reported and what this is it’s not it’s not a report that the the Cavaliers are ready to trade Donovan Mitchell because they’re not going to know that until after the finals are over uh when they could start negotiating with Donovan Mitchell but it is a report and saying they’re not going to do the middle thing the thing that I’ve actually been arguing that they should do that they should leave open is option is if I was Cleveland right I would just let him I would Donan Mitchell if the offers aren’t good enough I would call his bluff and say hey you got still you still got a year under contract let’s go play they’re not gonna do that pretty it’s a Firm Stance for the Cleveland front office and look they already taken a step in that direction by firing JB bicker staff and we didn’t talk about it because we T we had already spoken to Chris Manning formerly of lock on Cavs and we recorded an episode with him mid of last week and then we aired that last week you should definitely check that out if you haven’t done so because he provides great Insight from the Cleveland perspective but at the same time like they fired JB bicker staff there was some kind of friction there between him and Donovan and the idea is that this kind of clears the way now for them to hire the person that can get the most out of Donovan Mitchell but at the same time they want a commitment from Donovan one way or the other either you’re signing extension in which case we’ll build with you as our star we’ll trade darus Garland if we have to Etc or you’re not signing extension well guess what we’re moving on we’re going to go ahead and clear the books get whatever we can for you and start over and I think that’s makes a lot of sense from a cast perspective that’s the argument that you made and it does make sense if you don’t want to be in limbo for a year and kind of have like this weird lame duck season is Don Mitchell coming back or not I guess my argument all along was he’s just a really good player and I don’t care about your limbo you just don’t you keep keep the good player acire whatever you can yeah right uh but hey this is great news for the heat because if Donovan Mitchell so at the end of the finals essentially according to the NBA calendar you can’t if even if he’s your own player you can’t negotiate that contract extension right now with Donovan Mitchell now you’re not allowed to quote unquote whatever we know what actually happens behind the scenes but technically you are not allowed to make have those negotiations now but Donovan Mitchell in his end of season uh exit interview with the team not with the media his exit interview with the front office was was talking about things like this is how we should build and and the future of the Cavaliers and all these things and I think a lot of people like Kobe Alman who has talked about this in in to the media said like hey we are optimistic he’s talking like that he wants to be here long term and it’s like okay cool put the paperwork in front of them and see what happens it’s one thing to talk about that long term cuz what else are you going to say it’s another thing to put pen to paper and commit to being in Cleveland for another four or five years whatever the extension works out to be so um you know we’ll see I and and this is good news for the heat because if that contract paperwork is in front of Donovan Mitchell who has never publicly made any sort of long-term commitment to Cleveland it’s always pushed that can kicked that can down the road I’m not talking about that right now and he’s done a good job of doing that where it wasn’t a distraction but if that paperwork’s in front of him in July and he says no I’m good I’m not ready to sign this yet then that’s great news for the heat because now the bidding begins right and I don’t know man I I think you and I we’ve talked about this a lot on air off air have a hard time kind of deciphering what is what does the NBA World think about Miami’s assets what’s the NBA world really think about Nikola yic and haime hakas Jr and the more I read about stuff and even we’re going to do a grade the trade segment uh an outside trade idea that we’re going to kind of evaluate in the next segment but the more I read people talk about Miami’s assets the more it seems like they’re pretty bullish on the young pieces and haime and yovic in a way that it’s better than what Brooklyn can put together in terms of just young Play Pieces right now I one one person said haime hakz right now is better than any first round pick that that that Cleveland could get right they’re not going to get like the number one pick in the draft for Don Mitchell so bet better than any first round pick Cleveland could get haime hakz is a better asset you know that’s not including Miami’s own first round picks and Nico and all that other stuff that they could throw in see the problem with the Mitchell discussion and I’m kind I just can’t help but feel whatever PTSD from lard last year is that there’s GNA be some team out of nowhere like we’re all kind of moving forward with the idea it’s like oh let’s get Mitchell back home to Brooklyn the Cavaliers don’t give a damn about getting Mitchell back and I know that people say oh you know this is gonna hurt you in free agency in the future again what they did last year with Damen Lillard it’s like oh you know Portland doesn’t get free agents treat your Superstar right well you know what they did what was best for the franchise and they put Lillard in a good position where he could win he just didn’t at the same time there could be some ex team that nobody sees I don’t know I’m just putting names Memphis what if the Grizzlies come up with some kind of offer where they send him there you know what if you know if Houston seemed appealing to Chris when we talked to him last year but there are other teams out there who knows what kind of offer they could potentially feel together differ between that and I understand your PTSD and I’m not going to I’m not going to accuse I’m not going to question your trauma but I the I would say the difference if I can make you feel a little bit better between the Damen Lillard situation and the Donovan Mitchell’s situation is Lillard just signed that extension and was under contract for a very long time and had very little say in where he could go it was up to Portland to say Hey listen if we get this Godfather offer from somebody else which I guess they supposed the Milwaukee one was then we’re just going to take it for Mitchell he has leverage in that he could tell whatever team that wants to trade for him I’m not signing the extension with you either just like I didn’t sign it in Cleveland and so there is a little bit of a difference there no I get that and and and we went through that exercise when we did our mock off season you know it’s no matter what package you might put together even if they’re slightly better or even significantly better than what Miami does offer it all hinges on Mitchell’s willingness to stay with that franchise whatever it might be and so I don’t think we’re getting any kind of clear indication from Mitchell as to what team he wants to play for other than yeah it’d be great to play at home at some point and also conversely it’d be great to play alongside Bayman bio because who wouldn’t want to play alongside Bayman of Bio so the other version of that too is it could go the Paul remember when Paul George when the Pacers were shopping him he was really like the first one to kind of do this hey I’m not going to resign here so you might as well just trade me instead of letting me hit free agency everybody thought he was going to LA right and the Lakers and the didn’t have what it took to trade for Paul George at the time so they were just planning for the offseason the next the following summer they Indiana gets what they can they trade him to OKC and then Paul George falls in love with playing next to Russell Westbrook and commits and resigns an extension there so if you’re another team you could say you could call like Donovan Mitchell can call you up and be like well we’re not going to resign there so don’t bring me there the way we played it out on our mock offseason I think it was the Pelicans and then Mitchell’s going be like well I’m not going sign there and then the and the Pelicans were like all right then forget it there’s another world where the Pelicans say we don’t care yeah we’re trading for you anyway and and the Cavaliers won’t have a choice other than like well this is the best package we’re going to trade you there we don’t care if you’re unhappy and so and then maybe the next thing you know the Pelicans go on a run and Donovan Mitchell and Zion Williamson are the the next best duo in the NBA and they win a championship or what I don’t know like it just you play it out and that’s I guess the risk you would make if you’re the Pelicans but that’s the exact risk that the Cavaliers just did with Donovan Mitchell and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to work out and so if I were another team I would see the flight risk that Donovan Mitchell has already proven to be in a way that Paul George didn’t at the time and I’d say I really don’t this guy really wants to get to the market he wants to get to too and I don’t think that even if we call the bluff I think we’re going to be without a lot of chips at the end of this thing I just I want to see grainy footage of Donovan Mitchell walking around South Beach with a big smile on his face or something like that like I I just want some kind of commitment from him about you know wanting to play in Miami I know that we’re not gonna get because that’s what happened with Lillard Lillard was like I want to go to Miami no Don Mitchell don’t say anything about miam not a not a commitment a soft just like you could tell how don’t even go south of the Mason Dixon line for like a few months dude don’t mention us keep us out of he works out here the offseason you know he’s always go find somewhere else go work out in Brooklyn go work out in Brooklyn there’s a bunch of great go get to Equinox in manhatt yeah Chris Brinkley G up in New York yeah go there and be like oh he’s going to New York and then Miami is the Milwaukee in the situation the Dark Horse the Dark Horse fantastic Dark Horse Miami Heat um we’re going to grade a star trade next it’s not for Donovan Mitchell this one’s going to be really interesting we’ll talk about that next year on lockon heat thanks for making lock on heat your first listen every day make sure you’re subscribed on YouTube and on your favorite podcast app got a great week of content for you here on the lockon heat Channel we’re going to have another blue notebook NBA draft scout episode later on we’re going to be talking about some guards that we’re really excited to Scout and evaluate and uh discuss we’ll also be joined by an NBA Insider going to keep this one under wraps a little bit later in the week to talk about the latest on Don Mitchell get some inside Scoops coming to you on the feed so we’ll talk about all that we got a bunch of more episodes and content for you here on the channel follow us on Instagram locked on heat on Instagram Twitter all the socials and all those fun things all right so we’re going to try to do this new segment here we’ll see how this works we’re going to take it for a test run here uh grade the trade the idea is very simple we’re going to find a trade proposed by somebody on the internet and we’re going to grade it we’re going to evaluate it we’re going to critique it we’re going to talk about how realistic feasible it might be this one comes not just on the internet though we’re taking suggestions and we’ve got a couple from some listeners longtime listeners that have sent them in so we’re going to use that too so if you’ve got realistic trade ideas not like you know rebuilding the whole roster by trading a second round pick or something like that like if you’ve got an actual realistic might help yes we will discuss we will grade the trade here on the show and don’t trade for LeBron he’s already said he’s not going anywhere yeah he did he’s been good on TV by the way I’ve liked it he’s been on get up any doubt about that like gu willing to say whatever talk a little bit more but yeah I mean he’s gonna have his opinion and it’s gonna be honest and forthcoming and it’s yonis ham it’s everything he was while he was here in Miami and so it got him into a slightly hot water with Pat Pat Riley but other than that uh you know I think he’s been realistic and and great he’s been entertaining too so so this trade idea comes from Bleach reports Andy Bailey who uh does these quite often I think it won’t be the last time we hear from Andy Bailey in a Miami Heat trade um this summer 10 potential uh trades that nobody’s talking about which I actually like a lot of the ones that aren’t even related to the heat uh but that’s a different conversation the one that he has for the heat is really interesting he’s got Trey young and last year’s Hawks first- round pick Kobe buffkin going to Miami for Tyler hero haime hackz Jr Terry Rosier a 28 a 2028 first round pick Swap and a 2030 first round Pig swaps so the heat get Trey young and Kobe buffkin who I kind of liked coming out of the draft last year for hero Hae Rosier and a couple of swaps what do you think it’s tough it is tough uh I think you know you keep your draft pick this year you keep Jimmy Butler you keep bam bio obviously and you’re able to add a superstar level talent and Trey young with whatever personal preference you might have over Trey’s game he does have that star level talent and he can jump start an offense that has desperately needed in the time conversely I feel like it just it feels like you’re giving up a lot in Rosier and hawz and hero the pck swaps whatever at least you keep your draft capital for the most part but yeah man that just feels like a lot to give up and buffkin I like his potential 64 shooting guard he had some good games with the G League kind of raw only played in 17 games for the Hawks last year and he didn’t get a lot of burn while he was there he’s still young so he’s really raw so in a sense you’re kind of saying you know what we’re giving up the bloated contract of Terry Rosier which isn’t that bad but you know you’re giving up a big contract of Rosier you’re giving up the prime potential of haime hakz it depends I think to me on how you view himit is he a star in the making or is he going to max out as a top level role player and if that’s the case and given everything that we said about having to retool this roster to acquire St talent and in order to be able to beat the boss at Celtics you kind of have to pull your Tri pull the trigger on this trade I just as much as you appreciate haime hakz and love his game and the tenacity and everything else that he brought to the heat of season if you view him as just a really good role player which is totally fine absolutely fine that’s all you’re going to get from him and the most then you still have to wind up making that trade if you see him internally and this is for a heat front office decision to make if they see him as a guy who could be a potential starter even a guy who could potentially fill in for Jimmy Butler if you lose him down the road or if you have to trade him at some point or just when he retires and you see him as the next star that can fill fit in alongside bamama bio and whatever other star you’re able to acquire then no you don’t make that trade but if you don’t see him that way yes go for it get Trey young yeah I can’t believe I’m saying it because I’ve been low on Young and you’re the one that’s usually pretty high on the acquisition my well I’m my first reaction when I saw this is is Trey Young’s value this low yeah good point you know good point like the Kobe buffkin thing is a throwin I don’t think that that’s a material part of this trade I haven’t done the salary math on this but that’s probably what it’s for um the like you’re you’re you’re upgrading from Rosier to Trey young that’s an upgrade undoubtedly so like having rosier’s contract in there is almost inconsequential to Miami you’re just upgrading the spot you’re moving on from like to me the the swaps like miss me with these swaps who cares like swap him up man just swap everything you got I don’t care it to me it’s hero and hakz and you’re absolutely right if the Heats front office think that Hae haakas can be a an Allstar in a multi-time All-Star because that’s what Trey young is not a fringe fake Allstar Trey young is a legitimate when healthy a perennial Allstar if you think haime can be that because I think we know what Tyler hero is so if you think haime hakz could be that then you can’t make the trade I don’t think that anybody thinks that haime honas is going to be the multi-time allstar for sure right like he might have that ceiling and you and I are very high on haime but I don’t know like the front like that you would have to be really really high on highe for him for you not to make make this trade it does get rid of some of your depth in the in a deal like this what do you think about Kobe buffkin can he be a role player for you can he play 10 to 15 minute tonight I don’t know but Trey young is a oneman offense and I think his value has gotten to the point where I think people are forgetting how good of an offensive engine this guy is the hawk offensive rating over the last four years it was 12th this year when he was hurt and they were dealing with a lot of weird injuries and stuff seventh the year before that they were second in offensive rating three years ago and ninth in offensive rating the year before that like top 10 what’s that like top 10 right when the heat have basically been a bottom 10 offense this entire time imagine now now yeah the the talent that Trey young has played with has not even even on offense has not been the same Talent right like the heat take Trey young out of the equation the Heat have more offensive Talent than I think the Hawks have and you drop Trey young into that like he’s doing this with DeAndre Hunter dude like imagine if he had bam matab bio as a rim roller imagine if you had Jimmy Butler as a second side attacker I know this isn’t the trade that’s proposed but if there’s any way to even throw in like a actual draft pick and somehow include bonovich in that deal instead of buffkin like maybe that’s too much for Atlanta to give up and maybe they wouldn’t be willing to entertain it but again that I think that would go a way maybe that just seems more like moving deck shares for both teams because you’re giving up a lot throw in like you’d probably have to throw in Duncan Robinson just to get the salaries to work off the top of my head and I don’t know that you want to do that but you do get to keep Duncan Robinson in this in this in this trade too which is trade yeah Duncan would start in your back court probably buffin would be a backup you still again have your draft pick from this year too you still have Nik y you still have nikol yic so you’re keeping your almost entire starting lineup you’re just retooling your back court from hero and Rosier to Young and Duncan Robinson as your starter and the thing about Trey young and again I’m not high on Trey young I think that there’s a lot of issues and there’s a there’s a lot of smoke there but if you’re thinking about the way that you traded for Jimmy Butler who was at the lowest like had had such low value that people thought that the the Sixers won the trade because they got Josh Richardson out of it yeah and and yeah the locker room can all this like nobody wanted to touch this guy like that’s sort of where Trey Young’s value is right now the talent is undeniable the talent is absolutely undeniable and if you’re talking about Miami what have they been missing on offense not we could talk about offensive ratings and and all these stats they don’t have an identity on offense and haven’t had one for a couple of years now in the regular season they only tend to have an identity when Jimmy Butler wants to turn into that guy and when he is then everything makes a lot of sense but there’s not really an identity or a system in place you put Trey Young on that Court regardless of how you the the the the foul drawing the flopping the the the the the the usage like none of that is is fun to watch if you’re a Heat fan having watched these Hawks over the last few years but it’s undi that it’s a it’s it’s somethings it’s a it works and now you put young at the head of the snake of your off running pick and roll over and over with babo whatever wrinkles that Eric spuler is gonna add into that because you know that SPO is not going to just run pick and roll every every time down the floor that he’s GNA add something to it yeah and you’ve got Jimmy position offense between Trey young and niik yovic like that’s more fun than I think a Heat fans had in a long time right ex with the exception of course of the postseason and and we’ve talked about this on locked NBA I’ve start to interrupt but it’s just you know the idea is with with with young it’s like oh he’s going to want to control a team the kind of personality and control that he’s been able to exercise in Atlanta but if there’s gonna be a team that can absorb that that goes to your point about Jimmy like it’s about the heat it’s like you know what we’re gonna be who we are when you come in here or when you leave we’re gonna be as stable an organization as you can find professional sports if any team can absorb young and whatever ego issues he may or may not have because I think a lot of these things have also to your point been overblown over his career and he’s also not great with the media which doesn’t help his case right right in terms of the outside criticism yeah right so I I mean if you can take that personality it’s like whatever we we’ll deal with it we’ve dealt with these kind of people before he just wants to win he just wants to to have an impact positively on the court who cares if we like the way it’s play like I think I mean SPO would love it I think SPO has spoken highly of Trey young in the past and with good reason because he’s a great talented player so I don’t know I I never thought i”d be in this spot but like even just hearing it out laying it out the acquisition of talent such high level Talent makes a lot of sense for Miami I’m totally behind it and not just absorb that talent and and deal with it actively just like hey you want all the control you want to pull the you want to Captain the ship on offense go ahead here it is here’s our offense we’ll handle everything else we’ll handle the defense we just need you to do a little bit and by the way Trey young did get a little bit better he tried a little bit harder in the first half of last season before the whole year just kind of went to hell for them but there was signs of growth there which I think you like if you’re the scouting department but this is a team that like they don’t like Jimmy baller doesn’t want to do that on offense bam doesn’t want to be that guy on offense Trey Youngs and Walkin is like this is my offense now and they’re be like great here it is have it it’s your offense no argument here we’ll do all the other stuff we never wanted to do the offensive stuff anyway we didn’t want to do we didn’t want to take all these shots but instead of me passing off a wide open layup as Jimmy Butler to to hey with high Smith in the corner now I could just give it to Trey young and that seems like a little bit better and so I’m with you if this is the package you have to do it and that’s why I was so surprised I’m like this is all it this is all it’s going to take to get Trey young according to a Bleacher Report article like this is this is this is the outside evaluation of Trey Young’s value it’s this low then you have to do it I do wonder whether the Hawks would ever trade Trey young into the division we have to see this guy that’s a great point four times s a year and compete for the division title whatever that means every single season with a guy who used to be the face of the franchise we have not really ever seen a trade quite like that the closest thing would be the the James Harden Ben Simmons swap with Brooklyn and Philly a few years ago but these were not like like Ben Simmons was kind of the face of the franchise but was like you talk about value like completely like just ran out of town by that point by Philly and that totally been Joel and be’s team at that point James Harden was never really like part of the fabric of the Brooklyn franchise and fan base or whatever that is so it’s a little bit different um this would be pretty in I don’t know that I’ve ever seen something quite like this where you trade the F like the absolute identity of your team within the division and if I think if you got anything even close to this if you were Atlanta from another team in the West in Western Conference you would just send Trey young out west interesting point I can’t think of another trade similar to that um no I mean like it’s not the same division but like even trading LeBron to Miami and that was you know that was a a significant loss of identity there but you know that’s was a little different like yeah I mean he was a free agent at the time and he he had kind of made his choice but like look if the Lakers come out with this like they can they can compete with this offer they don’t have like a high hakz piece but they take all their first rounders and Austin Reeves like that’s if you’re Atlanta close enough where now I don’t have to see this guy also four times a year in my division if I’m the Hawks R office I’m like get yeah like get because if Trey if you trade Trey young to Miami in the division and then he does all the and then the heat do all the heat culture things to Trey young and make him the next Jimmy Butler or whatever kind of reclamation project then you lose your job as the Hawks front office in two years you are gone you are fired right so I I just don’t I don’t really ever see this happening but um it would be really interesting um thanks for making lock down heat your first list oh do we give it a grade do we actually yeah I was thinking that I would say a minus a minus in terms of creativity I I just don’t see it being feasible viability the viability of it is almost like an F I just don’t see anything ever happening between the Hawks and the heat like at this level at this level like it Deon Murray is a separate like they like yeah here’s Deon Murray like whatever but this this seems a little intense to me I don’t know but right I would love to be wrong thanks for making lock on heat your first listen every day hit They can't. They are galaxies away from any team in the west
I mean I think the answer is easy: health. Easy in theory anyways. Whatever upgrades as well whether that be internally or externally (or maybe downgrades on Boston's end) will help but that won't matter unless those upgrades are healthy. Boston has yet to face a healthy team
"There are steps to success"
Step 1.
Abandon the idea of getting another superstar..they don't have enough to outbid other teams.
Step 2.
Go young, they ain't beating the T-Wolves, C's, etc. by simply giving up all their depth to get Spida…they'd be too small and thin still.
Step 3.
With the assets and hopefully development of young guys, they can gain some desperately needed flexibility to begin trading with desirable pieces again. Right now, they are overpaying their top 4 players (They are all a tier too high!!!)
Even so, knowing them I expect vet mins and undrafteds to move deck chairs. "But they just had deep runs …" true BUT everyone else has largley left the Heat behind by making moves or is about to🥲
This version of the heat aint beating the celtics and tatum is top 5 dont kid yourself with that top 15 nonsense wes
GO ALL IN. A Donovan Mitchell type move is the only move that would close the gap between us and Boston there are more players that would but those guys will not be available. Ingram, Trae, Murray, Kuzma those guys don't move the needle in terms of Winning the NBA CHAMPIONSHIP. every Elite contender has a 25+ ppg Elite scorer and we need that guy we need more explosiveness on offense
I do like the Trey trade. Heat can draft Ware or Desilva to teplace JJJ. The question is, who do the Hawks trade Young or Murray?
Yes, they have to add a star, but they have to bolster up the bench as well with more consistent shooters. Boston has a deep team..when they get injured, they have guys that can step in & get buckets consistently. And they have to address the size issue..small ball isn’t going to cut it
Fuck the back court if i here anything about a guard or a wing im gonna break my new phone CENTER CENTER IS WHAT WE NEED BRO
Weakest conference miami failed makin no moves they fault they lost the easiest conference ever
I know you guys watch the heat more than I do and you get to see them up close, but I’m totally baffled as to how you might think that giving up a skilled young big in Jaimez and Tyler to add slightly more offense and get back no size or defense could be a good idea. I think you guys need to adopt an angle that Miami does not need another superstar. They just need adequate size defense and scoring at every position. Tyler does not provide playoff level defense nor does Duncan Robinson, and I love that they have improved every year, but when you look down the roster, those two are the weak links on defense, Trae Young is not gonna make us better on defense and I’m not sure that he would be more effective than Terry Rosier offensively.
Y'all laughed at me last year when I said get Kyrie
Seriously? you have lost your minds, I wouldn't trade Tra Young straight up for Hero. You continue to undervalue Tyler, If he can stay healthy he will be an all star. Stop it it please with your trae love affair, he is very good, and that's it. But I do love listening to you both
Let's just say trading Herro, Duncan, and future pick for Murray and Capela.
Resign, J Rich and Wright
Move Rozier to the 6th man
Sign Prince or G.Hayward for vet minimum
If we can't get D Mitch
BAM is NOT CLOSE to being a TOP 15 player in in NBA. That’s the problem, we over estimate our talent.
What other team with Superstars depend on their Role Players to carry their team? None. Because we don’t have Superstars. We have a team full of Super Role Players.
Id try to salary dump Herro if it comes to it. Try to sign malik monk then dragt size in the front court with both picks. With the cap where it is there not much that can be done
Make it hapen heat nation! 🔥
Stop it with the young idea…..he’s a horrible fit and does not move the needle
Trae young lol why do we want a 5 10 dude
I like Jaime but I see a high-level role player not a Star you sell the stock while it's high just NOT for Trae young has to be a worth it move like D Mitch
