DJ & PK | Full Show | May 31, 2024

good morning welcome on in DJ and PK on this Friday morning the last Friday of the month of May how about that tomorrow is June first what do you know about that that’s for sure man the time is just blowing by Big Time that is just an absolute fact and there ain’t nothing you can do about it you want to do anything about it probably doesn’t much matter not this time of year no not this time of year at all you want this time of year to go by slow weather’s good it’s summer summer almost not official but essentially high schools schools are all out colleges are done yeah what a time to be alive I sound like the late great Bill Walton don’t I well we can also all of us can learn a lesson from Bill Walton that is for sure no doubt about it and before we get started you know I got to tell you about something I got to tell you about the kzns Hercules hero of the week nominate the Youth Sports volunteer that you know for the Hercules hero of the week submit your nomination at KSL Sports .c contest and then listen every Thursday afternoon to JJ and Alex for the winter help us celebrate the efforts of those volunteers making an impact with the Hercules hero of the week sponsored by Hercules Credit Union and beehive meals and I said celebrate the winner well it’s time to celebrate you know who the Dallas Mavericks yep we got the final set the Dallas Mavericks versus the Boston Celtics certainly the first time those two teams ever faced off in the finals the Mavericks just putting it on Minnesota Minnesota with a nice season 56 and 26 they go home man they just couldn’t win at home that’s amazing they’re already home now they scatter Dallas just laying the wood right to Minnesota from the start 3519 in the first quarter well let’s see they weren’t quite as good all it was was 3421 at halftime in the second quarter I should say so at that point it was OA for sure man they just but 20po lead 30 point lead that game was history in a hurry second half was absolutely garbage time and Dallas just reduced any chance of Minnesota coming back by putting it on him early in the third quarter Minnesota had take a timeout just a couple minutes into it and the rest as I say was garbage time and how about this Luca donic he is the lead dog right 36 points most of them coming early six of 10 from three 14 of 22 oh yeah and let’s just see what’s he do besides that well he just throws in 10 boards and five assists and two steals for good measure and of course probably about maybe what 10 15 times whining at the refereeing and that’s what he does but the B big story maybe a bigger story because we expect that from donon don’t we he’s just that that good well how about Kyrie Irving Kyrie Irving 36 he matches him he matches him what do you know about that man 36 himself has 14 field goals just like Irving does he doesn’t or Dage does uh he only scores four from three goes four of 10 but four for four on the line at the line and he puts up 36 right now these two t these two guys they are playing as good as any tandem in the league has all season I don’t see where anybody could argue that I’ve been saying it all postseason when Kyrie Irving has got his head on straight he’s not worried about all these other things that got in the way when he was in other places when he concentrates on ball he’s as good as anybody in this league at his position at his position yeah I still take Dage but what a team and I like the way that Irving has just basically said okay I’m not going to be the lead dog you are but I’m going to play off you and when you need me I’m going to be there and that’s the way it’s been I think they got a legitimate chance for Boston to beat Boston don’t you I don’t think there’s any question about that man the way they’re playing it just seems like they got the Mojo do you realize last year they lost at the end so they don’t make the playoffs and then what do they do this year they get back in 50 wins 50 and 32s obviously six games behind Minnesota but then they just find a way to get the job done man very very impressive Lively who was their pick that they used last year he was uh questionable or maybe doubtful for that sprain neck that he had now he comes in he’s just he’s it’s funny the name is Lively obviously but man he’s got a lively body doesn’t he and he gets eight boards in 25 minutes and he can score he score a little bit you know he’s not the best shooter by any stretch if he were he would have gone much higher in the draft but you can count on him eight or nine 10 points but he certainly can do his thing on the boards and they got uh Cleaver back we’ll see what happens with Boston you know we still got a week to go before the final start they get porzingis back I hope they do I hope they do because I would love to see it at full strength and then whoever’s the better team go and have a long series that would be my idea that’d be the goal and clearly those those trades that uh Dallas made midseason getting gaffard and Washington PJ Washington those guys help too I mean they’re not spectacular players but you’re asking them to be role players and fill in what they need to do and that’s exactly what they’re doing and they are doing it well you got to just tip your hat to them to be able to make the moves that they made and then incorporate that in the starting lineup pretty darn impressive if you ask me yeah I think so and now going forward I would I would think that they are the favorite but favorite for me but I don’t know L literally if they’re going to be the Vegas favorite I’d say probably not but I’m going to go with Dallas whatever however they figure those odds I’m not so sure how they do it in basketball uh Boston you know I mean I’m not discounting them by any stretch they got some Talent on that team obviously and you know what’s going to be what’s going to be cool is you’re going to have two battles right battles of two guys you’re going to have obviously Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown versus dauch and Irving I think that if Dallas wins and dones does what he does he’s going to go on to be a top 10 player in the history of the league when he’s done now he’s got a good ways to go because that young fella and that’s exactly what he is even though he’s been in the league this long that young fella is all of 25 years old he has turned 26 until next February February 28th so the season will be half over what a stud and can you believe man Phoenix and M uh Sacramento passing on them yikes that is bad news for sure okay we’ve got an outstanding show planned for this morning I’m super excited obviously DJ’s off it’s me PK we’ve got David lock coming in at 8:00 and then how about this Kevin Young young BYU basketball coach at 8:30 and then at 9:00 Babble marreon Of The Red Hot RSL soccer team for sure they got it going on first what we’re going to do we come back from break we’re going to talk to Mitch Harper Mitch Harper down in Dallas for the Big 12 meetings and have an opportunity to interview with Tom Homo stay with us right here on 975 the KSL Sports Zone joining us now is from live from Dallas is our KSL Sports Insider Mitch Harper Insider for BYU Mitch good morning good morning PK happy to be on with you so you are down in Dallas at the Big 12 spring meetings is that correct that is correct yes and you had an opportunity to talk with Tom holmo and he doesn’t speak to the public very often so what was going on there and it was you were talking to him about uh the finan cial situations in college football or the college sports I should say and what’s going down legally explain that for us so the the house vers NCA settlement it’s going to have a a huge ripple effect on BYU and and College athletics to where basically schools are going to be able to pay athletes and it could go as high as $22 million per school and I asked Tom Homo if BYU is willing to pay that 22 Mill million dollar annually and he noted that it’s going to come down to the conference and you know the conference will you know and sorting things out with the the settlement and and the court system um sounds like there’s going to be uh kind of uniformity across the board as to what each individual Big 12 team is going to pay uh which in many respects could could help the the cause for BYU going forward uh because you could have a lot more again uniformity as far as teams paying similar uh amounts rather than you know you lost this guy because at the last hour U you know he got a a bigger deal than you could offer and look there’s still going to be uh you know collectives and and niil uh side deals to maybe go over what you know this Revenue sharing could look like but um you know BYU wants to be a a contributor at a high level to the Big 12 and uh it seems like you know Tom Homo is willing to and this and BYU is willing to uh do what the big 12 is expecting going forward with this new Revenue sharing era that’s entering College athletics when do you think that would get started next year uh as early as next year fall of 2025 so um you know the the 2025 2026 uh athletic year that’s as soon as it could could really you know begin and uh this week in the meetings is is where a lot of the um you know conversation is starting with you know figuring out the road map of how leagues like the big 12 are going to navigate this and you know there’s so many things to unpack because you know how when if you do hypothetically pay out $22 million to the athletes at say BYU you know how does it get divvied up does it uh does it fall under Title 9 where you have to pay uh the men a the male athletes and the female athletes the same amount there’s really no kind of bylaws when it comes to financial payments in regards to Title 9 uh so that’s something that’s on the top of mine this week uh at the meetings and you know figuring out you know what all the how how this is going to look does it in involv a length of time that these these students are going to student athletes are going to be at uh the the respective school could it you know entailed you know a little more stability and that was something that Tom Homo fills could this settlement can bring to College athletics is is actual stability which has been lacking honestly since BYU got the invite to the Big 12 in 2021 it’s you know since that moment it’s been a world of you know nil and transfer portal without any you know sitting out and uh just so much uncertainty with the sport so uh this could create a a deal where coaches can actually maybe you know once again as you know p okay like they they used to be able to you know forecast out years in advance what their rosters would look like and and maybe they could get back to that potentially with this you know Revenue sharing model that’s uh you know going to be coming soon so you think that they’re talking about the money that would be shelled out as you say would be uniform and consistent throughout college sports and whether you’re Alabama or San Jose State and all that stuff would all be the same well all the power conferences will will have their their own uh you know payments the the reported cap is that could go as high as $22 million that’d be the highest uh so if the SEC schools say we’re going to pay you know 22 million across the board that’s that’s the amount Big 12 might have a different amount that their schools are paying uh whether that’s 15 22 who we don’t really know yet there’s but each conference will have their own uh kind of way that go about it but they can’t go any High higher than $22 million per school all right then Mitch uh KSL Sports Insider for BYU I guess that since it’s uh you clarified there as far as the conferences uh you brought up the title 9 thing would it be a situation in which it would be uniform from the quarterback to the whatever non-revenue sport they’d all be making the same or would be schools be able to decide who gets what the feeling initially would be that it would be schools get to decide where it goes but it seems like with College athletics everyone’s trying to do things in a way that avoids a lawsuit so to adhere to Title 9 potentially any potential lawsuits of that those are the answers that are going to really be need to be sorted out in the next you know couple coming months yeah before this potentially goes into effect in in Fall 2025 but I mean honestly it really should prob go to football and you know men’s basketball but primarily football as far as you know the revenue generation because this this money stems from meteorites ticket sales uh all that Revenue generating aspects in in a college athletic department uh those are the top two sports so you would naturally think they’d go back to those athletes that are are really generating that revenue and that’s where they got to sort things out fascinating stuff we’ll see what happens at seems to me that and I guess my question for you would be that what you’re feeling as far as ads and the folks that you’re talking to that they want this to happen so there’d be at least some form of Regulation rather than this constant free-for-all and that that’s the big thing they they that’s what they’re I think they’re excited about the the possibilities and and I think that the fact that the the Big 12 Conference uh is kind of a you know still a an influencer of sorts in this decision by being still labeled with the the power five and and being in those conferences it still kind of puts them on a threshold where they are among the top conferences now we all know you know the SEC and Big 10 they’re going to you know double the the medor rights and that’s still going to be uh you know a huge factor and that’s why it’s so there’s such a Chase for for teams to want to be in the SEC in Big 10 because it it makes the the 22 million tab potential a little bit easier to to handle when you’re getting 70 million in media rights compared to 31.5 which is what you know teams like BYU and Utah are going to be getting when the new media rights go into effect in 2025 up until 2031 uh but but still the the big 12’s got uh you know the the the power five status and that autonomy that allows them to still be a power broker in the sport and if it can create more stability to where they you know feels like these rosters are are are staying consistent it’s just not this endless windfall to the transfer portal uh I think it seems like administrators are are pretty excited about that and I think there’s a sense too that with the co athletes the ones that you know came in around 2020 and had that free year of Eligibility as they kind of start to uh move out of college sports then you’re getting into a world where every athlete has lived in a space where they got recruited and had and had nil opportunities in front of them coming out of high school maybe there might not be as much of a you know push to just go to the portal because in many respects if you’re playing in the power five or power four now you you’ve been getting some money so uh there might be a more willingness to just stay instead of continuing to always find the biggest bag and and I think that’s what everyone’s kind of hoping for around here is that that more stability could be a better product too for the fans as well makes sense mcharper BYU Insider for KSL sports.com joining us well we saw this week that the Cougars got a 69 point guard and so they got their Magic Johnson when they gonna get their Larry Bird that’s that’s a great question I mean Jor Doan uh is a is a fascinating Prospect and I think he changes the the the Outlook of of you know BYU potentially what they could maybe they’re ceiling you know because up until this point up until his addition I still feel like felt like BYU was probably at best the ninth or 10th team in the Big 12 because I don’t think Bo fans realize but the big 12 was was relatively down last year by their standards and those teams have only gotten better Houston maybe a little bit of a slight step back without Jamal shed they got Milo uzan from from Oklahoma but uh The rosters in the Big 12 are going to be much better next season season and we’ve seen you know even with teams like UCLA who had you know a bunch of potential first round NBA draft picks from the international ranks it didn’t you know work as easily as as expected for last year for Mick Cronin and they were kind of underwhelming so I think it’s going to still take time I’m curious to see how you know Dolan F handles the kind of physicality in the Big 12 Conference because this this is a a very physical league and the officiating is not going to uh allow for finesse in this conference I’m curious to see how he adjusts to that but but but it’s a solid roster and I think that to have a game changer like him um is is is fascinating to see how you know Kevin young can really uh develop him and if he does get him to the lofty Heights that many you know draft Knicks are kind of forecasting for him as a you know top 10 lottery pick guy and if Kevin young can deliver that uh that’s got to bode well uh moving forward for B you and the pitch he will have uh from a recruiting perspective and you know the the resources that Kevin Young’s got I mean as as he told me in April I mean he’s not getting many NOS he he’s getting opportunities to uh do things at BYU that I don’t think any of us have ever seen before and uh so there’s a lot of support behind him and uh yeah I think dolman is just kind of a highlight of this kind of new era of BYU and the commitment they’re showing I’ve been neglectful Mitch now that I got you that we didn’t talk football and BYU football it’s sort of important around these parts for sure and so we’re still a little bit away obviously from get going a couple of months or so uh but you know they’re going to start doing their summer workouts here and probably have’ already been doing them and obviously the focus of the attention is on the quarterback and so whereas last year they basically only had one dude and now they got minimum three if you want to count finnean you count him too as far as having experien as division one and they got a late edition hillstead coming down from Logan and he had some playing experience looked good in the Mountain West level and now they’re going to be in be he’s going to be in the Big 12 obviously um just break it down handicapp it let’s go with just those three guys that we know with bannan and the JC kid who got in there last year and then hillstead to see what what we got going here I would still give Jake redl a slight Edge as the starter uh to to be that number one guy on on week one and because you know when when BYU signed him out of the JC ranks you know Aaron rodri believed that they had inherited a a future starting quarterback that could be in many respects they felt maybe the face of the program uh potentially with red Stu so there’s always been a high view of what he could be and and in Spring ball the the fact that rodri noted you know he he didn’t have any interceptions now there were times within spring practices where um you know the throws that he made he felt like poorly thrown balls in in a setting where you’re not going to get hit you need to deliver those passes that doesn’t does that translate to to to a game but you know I think redl has got the slight Edge and you know he’s someone that has really done a lot of work to to kind of reach out to former BYU quarterbacks and pick their brain he he’s doing everything he can to win that job and that’s not to say that no one everyone else is because it’s really an open competition to go get that thing but I think rlap showing the the work he’s putting in that time with uh you know to kind of develop those relationships within that locker room too uh to try to be that leader of the offense so I would put him as the favorite bannan’s going to get every opportunity uh you know to to start and have a chance to to play this season but I think for for BYU they’ve got to have an underclassman really emerge whether that’s rlap uh you know McKay hillstead that someone from from the underclassman ranks has got to shine for BYU because then you can use that as momentum going into next year for 2025 and if you’ve got momentum and stability at quarterback that can create a little bit more job security too uh because Gary banan if if he had success and if they won games that’s great uh but then 2025 you’re restarting again at that quarterback spot to figure it out and so there’s a real I think desire to to get an underclassman to break through I find hillstead though fascinating uh from Utah State because even though he’s a little bit uh under sized you know he’s got I think a bigger arm than Than Jake redl does and we know that Aon rodri loves to stretch the field and and get explosive plates to the air but also have a quarterback that that can do it with his feet and uh you know hillstead I think is an intriguing Prospect for for BYU but it’s hard for me to kind of you know wrap my mind around him uh being that uh starter in week one and because he didn’t arrive until May 13th when summer conditioning uh showed up and unless he just blows everyone away at fall Camp uh I I just I think that’s a that’s a little bit of a tough stretch right now so I would still put r one banah two I think Hill said will’ll earn that third job and and he’ll be you know knocking on the doorstep over the course of the Season uh to play because I think also too with this quarterback job you know no one is is a big enough star that says the the program is is completely yours so it it should be if you have a bad week uh then you got to go back to the drawing board and maybe go find another quarterback to uh to to insert the following week I don’t think there should ever be this feeling of uh they no one’s Irreplaceable like slovis was last year whereas uh this season if you’ve got a terrible game I think you got to go to the next guy you got to find some sort of answers and then you ride that hot hand week after week because right now uh you know no one has has done enough to say that they’ve just cemented themselves as the week after week guy regardless of bad performances Mitch appreciate your time thank you you bet PK take care there you go that was Mitch Harper coming up next Donovan Mitchell man he’s back in the news for sure is Dallas gonna or Dallas is Cleveland going to trade him well Jake Scott and I discuss it stay with us right here 975 the KSL Sports Zone welcome back in DJ NPK DJ’s off today shout out to David James yeah I’m even missing talking Sports no shout out to DJ we love David yeah he’ll be back on Monday we’ll be here tomorrow good for him um although it’s not uh I don’t think he’s on vacation I know what he’s doing no he’s not uh so Donovan Mitchell free agency would be this time next year Cleveland’s got a decision to make much like the jazz jazz made their decision and shipped them out now Cleveland is in search for a new coach apparently bigger staff wasn’t good enough and they so they need a new coach and Mitchell uh they can get a commitment for him to extend if not would they trade him there be a lot of talk and your guy who used to schedule you told us this Mr windhorse you used to schedule him as a guest back when he was a writer put out something that actually DJ sent this to me yesterday and you’ve seen it and you’re going to read it right now David James he is a Content machine he’s just said stuff we got to make sure to get he’s just a Content guy uh all right this comes via Wendy Brian windhorse of uh e ESPN um talking about Donovan Mitchell’s role within the Cavs organization ranks among the most powerful for any superstar in the league quote what Donovan has with the Cavs is what LeBron has with the Lakers in fact it might even be stronger oh man I got to go Nancy carrian here why why why would they do that uh what do you mean why would they do that why would Cleveland seed that much power to him in order to have power somebody’s got to give it to you I mean you can earn it but then you have to the other person has to be willing to accept it why would Cleveland allow Mitchell to have I oh nice Ash why I like a little cry at the end play that again why why why such a sad thing to be laughing about well I’m a sad dude what the heck why would they give him that much power that’s more than what LeBron has there’s a little bit of difference there between LeBron and Mitchell Mitchell’s a good player LeBron’s an alltime player um all right where to start here well first of all let’s start here I don’t believe any of that no no I don’t I mean do you think windhorse is lying or the person who told wi horse is lying uh both both all right who represents Darius Carland what do you mean who represents Darius Carlin who’s his agent oh who’s his agent oh okay you’re not going to believe this Rich Paul from clutch Sports oh it’s clutch Sports you don’t say so where are you going with that uh they started the fire with the athletic piece that came out right as the series was ending Darius Garland is not an All-Star any longer because Donovan Mitchell is basically the same player and he gets more attention and in that article they said if Donovan Mitchell is going to stay in Cleveland they want Darius Garland to be traded and then a local news report came out that Donovan Mitchell got JB bicker staff fired and the it’s a it’s a clutch vers Donovan um narrative war going on in Cleveland and it’s it’s interesting you you mentioned earlier that that Cleveland has a decision to make they really don’t they need to they need to offer Donovan as much money as they can why because you don’t want to lose an asset like that for nothing and well you wouldn’t lose an asset for that for nothing You’ do what the Jazz did when they lost Gordon Hayward no okay okay no no they wait no no no I got you hold on I’ll get to that okay they need to offer him as much as they can and if Donovan says no then they’ve got to trade him then there’s not really a decision to be made you gotta split but the smart thing for Cleveland to do is to not lose that asset or to Max it out and trade it down the road and do what the Jazz did trade him with three years on his contract not with one year on his contract because his value is going to be that much higher so there’s not really a decision for Cleveland to make other than try to give Donovan as much money as you can and then I guess you have to turn around and trade Darius Carin if Donovan accepts it if he doesn’t that means he’s leaving and then you’ve got to move him it’s just interesting that it’s interesting that clutch is trying to submarine it but here’s the thing with Donovan I would I would believe that he would enjoy some Liberties when it came to sharing his opinion with the front office it’s not some Liberties it’s like cart blunch I don’t think it is though I think that’s what I think that’s what Clutch is selling I mean like I said Cleveland doesn’t really have a choice so what is what is Donovan Mitchell what is he manipulating I mean who’s the coach for one well do you believe he got biger staff fired I don’t know if I believe that either maybe there well if you buy what wior is saying then I don’t know that he got him fired but wi horse’s credibility is on the line then he tweets it out because once you tweet something it’s it’s public record and it’s fact well they what about Cleveland wants to make as an attractive position for Donovan to stay as possible why though so they move on and find a more attractive coach to Donovan Mitchell why why why because they invested in him they in when they traded for him they invested in him yeah but that was two years ago but at very least you want to sign him like Paul George did in Oklahoma City if for no other reason to trade him okay so the best thing the only thing for them to do is I get all that I get all that but why give him so much power as much or more than LeBron that’s the part I don’t that for a second I don’t buy that he he influences like nobody does LeBron manipulates the whole league LeBron’s manipulating this situation right now you see that Bron is only working out for the Lakers and the Suns it’s ridiculous that bronnie is even in working out for any team why no you got to do your homework oh do you mean averaging Five Points at USC is Dar had Cardiac Arrest two months earlier I know he did and so we’re going to judge him on fact that he came back from death’s door he wasn’t good before then either so he’s got he the the right thing for him to do would be go back and play develop do all that he’s not ready for the NBA yet if if for no other reason than the health you’re pointing out but but that’s wrong because the more you go and show you’re not ready the more they yes cuz he’s not an NBA player resarch it well but you if you’re going to go you got to go now and so yeah where your old man can twist the arms of a bunch of franchises to to give you something that you never earned it’s somebody going to do that it’s what LeBron does yes it’s he’s been doing this forever yeah but it did it’s at at no cost to an NBA team once you bring him aboard you’re now paying him so LeBron can manipulate but there’s nothing that any NBA team is investing right now listen Ste the great ston Smith Senior once told me I don’t know who that is hatch does Steve Smith Senor receiver wide receiver Utah wide receiver Carolina Panthers never heard of you followed you there uh but he once said there’s a lot of dumb general managers out there it was a great quote and that’s the truth I mean there’s a LeBron’s been twisting the arm of dumb general managers forever see Rob pinka and so now you’re going to allow Mitchell to do that that’s I don’t think he is I well I don’t know that he is I believe Brian do you yes well good for you I don’t I I at least believe that I at least believe that did it they did it I published a freaking story and they took it down so Donovan’s feelings weren’t hurt I’m a nobody on a nothing website and they ordered it to be taken down to not upset Donovan Mitchell I I would believe that their Cleveland is plating to his feelings because they want him to signed that doesn’t mean that Donan talking both sides of your mouth you said he doesn’t have power now he does have power it’s perspective or it’s whose perspective are you looking at yeah players flex but this is manipulation on the other side where this is uh this is a clutch person windhorse trying to I don’t want to say slander because there’s partial truth to it right that the the team wants to please the star because they want him to resign he’s not good enough to be pleased to this level he wasn’t good enough to be pleased at this level in town I I don’t disag story is going to cause the guy not to resign on a nothing website then you’ve got way more problems than you thought yeah I know uh I know you’re worked up about that but that’s a different discussion no it’s the same thing it’s about trying to kiss the butt of some player it’s in Cleveland’s best interest that he resigned so they’re going to try and if you want mediocrity and never get out of the second round if that’s in your best interest so be it but you’re assuming Donovan’s going to be on the team in three years the idea is that you just don’t lose the guy so you can flip him like the Jazz did the biggest thing the worst thing Gordon Hayward did to the Jazz was he left so they got nothing he didn’t even he wasn’t even willing to do a trade exception that’s not the worst thing that happened the worst thing that happened and this came right from Jazz leadership is they went third they went last and in the meantime they lost out on an opportunity to sign two players who could have made a significant difference you you don’t they told me that we should have gone first you’re going to sign yes or no you don’t believe that and I don’t either I 100% believe it that’s where they screwed up and they they’ve changed ownership now so it doesn’t matter but and management that’s where they made the mistake is they waited too long and in the meantime once that thing starts once the signing day starts then it’s a race to see it’s like recruiting man hey if you want a scholarship depending on how good you are you can wait wait if you’re not that good you better take the scholarship now and if you’re not really a five-star oh by the way you take the scholarship and if you take other recruiting visits we’re dropping the scholarship but if you’re a stud you can go and take as many visits as you want we’ll still take you two conversations um and I’m making an excellent point in both of them you don’t believe that Gordon Hayward thing and I will tell you why I know I’m I’m going to tell you tell me why don’t believe it when I do believe it you know why when I got it right from the horse’s mouth I listen to the DJ and PK show and I millions and I listened to the DJ and PK show a particularly good episode about a year at least a year uhhuh before Gordon Hayward left and it was from a Dynam Dynamic guest that you guys still have to this day that goes by the name of Brian giler my jersey guy and he came on the DJ and PK show and he said guys he’s going to Boston it’s happening I like I can’t remember exactly what geter said but he’s like I heard it I talked to people it’s it’s going to happen you’re right you’re right it’s happening recall and the reason that I we got a free lunch out of that deal the reason this stands out so much to me is because I was that that was a controversial interview and get Siler didn’t come on the show for a that wasn’t that reason why well no cuz I was on with you I was filling in for David with you the next time came you bailed and let me alone the next time he came on and he just went scorched Earth on everybody he did he did he did on everybody that that all the the blowback that he got from that and he named names he settled all family business he did and I’m like uhoh oh it was he went Jersey he settled all family business today oh we were at M and put his brother-in-law on a plane to Vegas we were at Mountain Del Golf Course remember and I was on remote somewhere else for my show that came up next yeah and I left left like the last segment and I’m driving down the canyon REM it I’m listening I’m listening to this [Music] flamethrower I remember it it was incredible I thought my career radio career was over so I get it that somebody he got banned from our Airwaves for multiple years long time he’s an ex guest oh he’s amazing I never miss him no he’s great no he’s a okay so what’s your point my point is is that somebody told you that their problem was they didn’t go first but that’s not the truth you don’t think so they I just explained to you why I don’t they believe that they could they could have signed other dudes they well other dudes whatever believe in one hand and that would have helped in the other who like Otto Porter wasn’t that the rumor or something like that bunch of it was Lowry at the time mhm and he was a very good player he’s older now right but he was he was solid player he would have helped them and it turned out they could have assed him as a free agent yeah yeah yeah marinan no Kyle Lowry oh Kyle Lowry yeah that was in that time frame Lowry was coming up on the free agent market and the situation the way it played out they missed out an opportunity get get mix for yeah but Kyle Lowry isn’t a number one like they were pretending Gordon Hayward was the point was is that Hayward left hayward’s a number one a number one what a number one something or other they thought he was they wanted to Max him out but that’s neither here nor there they maxed out everybody auto porter got maxed out he left and they got nothing they got zero and I know it really set them back well they got lucky that they drafted Donovan Mitchell I mean if you want to say well it’s why Donovan got the perfect situation for him when he when he was a rookie what R rookie gets the ultimate green light but nobody else on the team could or want wanted to shoot so all of a sudden this rookie gets to score 20 points a game and nobody bats an eye I mean it was the perfect one of Kevin situation Kevin one of um Dennis’s and Quinn’s greatest decisions absolutely yeah I mean and that the the back half of Donovan Mitchell’s rookie year I’ll never forget where they’re nine games out of the playoffs and they battle in and they battle it out Rudy comes back from injury remember and they just they turn into the best defensive team in the league yeah and then they’re beating Oklahoma City in the first round I mean it was promising future it was Joe was coming into his own absolutely because Donovan was plugged into a team full of really good role players and they just needed somebody to shoot and he raised his hand and he said I’d be happy to you want me to take 20 shots a game yes please and he turned out to be really good at it uh yeah for sure and I could see why Cleveland would want him back but that’s luck that’s not like I don’t know if it’s luck would they ah man see I disagree you to have good fortune shine upon you that Denver is willing to make a trade yada yada but they spent a lot of time preparing for those very situations so now they put in some effort to be in that position to know that this guy was going to be a player but if they drafted malink monk instead of Donovan Mitchell and I bring up that name on purpose he’s not good enough to play that role Donovan was good that’s lucky should have been Devin Booker over Trey Lyles sure I I and if you want to go back even F situation took advantage of but that that’s Sports man that stuff happens all the time but it doesn’t make it any less lucky H you got it but see but you you get fired for bad picks and now you make good picks and I’m going to say well it was just dumb luck I think the criticism on bad picks comes too much they but nevertheless that’s the fact if you make a bunch of bad picks you get fired a bunch def find a bunch but now we’re going in a different direction you know that two teams had to pass on Donovan Mitchell that wanted so New York Jeff hornek your guy wanted to draft Donovan Mitchell hor told me and then what Phil Jackson stepped in I think at the time and said we’re drafting somebody else it was in this building and it was they drafted Frank neina I think yeah yeah yeah yeah who not a player and then not no no the Hornets were going to draft anaman until at the last minute Michael Jordan said no no no I want this Malik mon well Dallas is gonna get to the finals and Sacramento thought Marvin baggley was a better player so yeah but they still had to draft him they still had to put in the work I it’s good fortune shines upon you I’ll give you that but it’s not all about just dumb luck because if it’s dumb luck then anybody could do it but they spotted Donovan in a workout and and they went and got him and and Quinn deserve all the credit in the world for that abely but they they had to have some luck to have him available and but that’s that no they had to have the Fortune of others okay CU if they didn’t do the work they wouldn’t have known that he was that good to be able to trade to take him sure potato potato whatever so they I it’s not just if it’s just dumb luck then I can do it and I can’t do it it’s more than dumb luck yes but Dum luck plays a a crazy role in it and but it does it every that’s just the nature of sports like donic absolutely Dallas lucked out uh Phoenix and Sacramento were the two teams in front right M yeah they took B what’s his face aidon and then DeAndre aen and Bagley phix awful Pi Phoenix hired kosov kosov screw it up because he was Luca’s coach and they still screwed it up Sacramento hired Vlad devox to be their general manager specifically because he knew the European game and they screwed it up it is and then what Atlanta traded hey and I was like DJ’s 14th choice luy and look how lucky he got cuz all the other 133 you put them together and they wouldn’t have been as good as I’ve been I agree with you wholeheartedly there you go that’s Jake Scott and I talking about Donovan Mitchell talking about DJ who will be back on Monday looking forward to that for sure DJ and PK is proudly presented by Murdoch Hyundai Utah’s number one Hyundai dealer for 18 years in a row coming up next get you what’s trending and I’m telling you man no matter what happened yesterday I am going to keep my vot hold on hold on you have to join us at about 7:30 to figure out what I’m talking about stay with us 975 the KSL Sport Zone it’s time to get your morning started with the news you need to know news up this is what’s trending with DJ and PK # NBA Luca left side of the floor to the left Luca turns that way and from the bottom of the low go he hits Here Comes Luca up the middle Luca into the lane Luca right corner Jones gets by Anderson back out Luca right in the circle three good Tyrie with t to shoot side step left for three and hits it over Carl Anthony towns dodic left to right top of the circle six to shoot against towns five will shoot over towns for three backed it in of course he did how would you describe that feeling to demoralize the crowd on the road in this Seas situation it’s it’s a good feeling man I can’t lie uh just go out there and you know it’s us against them uh just stay together uh but that feeling that feel is great I like blowout winds on the road and I cannot lie how the heck are you Yakami doing great yeah we don’t have enough introduction find out how people are doing with all this hubub in the world I just want you to know I love you love you too and thank you for that and the Dallas Mavericks are loving the back cour combination of Luca donic and Kyrie Irving they just went for what 36 a piece combin for 72 yep yep that’s what that adds up to and they just blow out Minnesota I didn’t even watch fourth quarter okay not you know that there’s a certain ESPN personality that back in the day was caught like re uh retrograding being their draft analysis they do trade analysis as well and there was a funny tweet last night that had uh when they traded for Kyrie Irving that graded that trade as a d for the Dallas Mavericks and like I can’t wait if they win this title for that to be regraded as like an A+ yeah I’ve been saying it all along now for weeks when his head’s on straight he’s a great ball player and what I don’t want to call him second fiddle because that doesn’t sound good enough but the way he plays off Luca it’s just great he’s settled in I think they’re GNA get it done I mean that thing was such a blowout last night that in the fourth quarter I just watched Fox News exclusively look at you go can’t imagine what they were [Laughter] discussing oh we’re going to have fun with that [Music] uh hey I’m off next week so what the heck may be off longer than that if you weigh too far into that fool no it’s all for fun finals begin Thursday I’m excited for the finals man I’ve always been I was a teenager I watched the freaking thing on take delay so obviously with this I mean you got some great players can we’ll get lock on here in about an hour get his thought on that he knows more about it than I do uh the com combo of donic Irving is it better than brown Tatum Tatum Brown however you want to phrase that and then the role players you know porzingis is he going to come back uh who’s got the more star power who’s going to win it uh I would think that Boston would be favored right they are the betting favorites yeah and but I’m I’m going to go with Dallas well that’s the thing I’m I’m looking at this and Dallas has had to work their way through I think tough for opposition certainly Boston had a cakewalk to the NBA finals there’s no doubt about that and both teams have injury concerns but the fact that Dallas has proven it like I said against tougher competition I’m I’m rolling with the Mavs right now yeah cuz I think uh there could have been three teams maybe coming out of the East Maybe not maybe Boston would have been better than all of them and they deserve they deserve their flowers uh so just a bouquet not exactly an entire full room yet because now they’ve got to win and they’re hungry because they’ve been here and haven’t gotten the job done Dallas with this group it’s the first time there a team that didn’t wouldn’t even making the playoffs last year to go to the finals it’s just incredible donic is one heck of a ball player he’s only 25 years old too my gosh he’s barely getting started when you think about that all right excited for the NBA Finals to start next week for sure let’s move on # NFL Aaron you know is one of the best quarterbacks our league has ever seen but he doesn’t get into the greatest convers ation uh until he gets to another Super Bowl having him switch teams having him come back at 40 years old uh you know with with off of an Achilles the New York Jets who have never won and this could maybe set Aon in kind of a different category I mean kind of what I was able to do with Arizona that that elevated me back to a different status than it would have been had I just had great success with uh with St Louis I would agree with that last part that’s Kurt Warner talking about Aaron roders in the goat conversation I don’t think he’s there I think that’s about two or three guys I think in Goat conversation and the quarterbacks I’m probably going to miss somebody cuz this is off top of my head but obviously you got Brady I think you’re at Montana and I think Elway deserves to be in there anybody else should be at least in the conversation am I missing anybody in the Manning sure yeah he’d probably be the fourth guy on that list yeah uh Aaron Rogers if he does it with the Jets I mean it has been done but you got to go back uh a long way what was it 69 with the Joe Wily nameth thing going on there the’ 69 was even that late like but yeah it’s been a long time yeah somewhere in there that’s where nerd boy would be able to recite that if he if he lifts that W be gone franchise to a Super Bowl yeah you can put him in the goat conversation I Kurt Warner did get elevated I believe into the Hall of Fame without question by taking Arizona within uh uh less than 2 minutes to go and that that franchise had sucked for a good while the fact that it sucked at Bas virtually its entire time in Arizona I think they had one Jake plumber got him a playoff win and he got him Kurt Warner got him four which uh they haven’t had well they Carson Palmer they’re pretty good they got to an NFC final uh one year when then Cam Newton won with SH uh Carolina that year so I can that but I don’t know it’s going be interesting to see how the Jets are going to do you know we were told that it was just the Zach Wilson thing I guess BYU fans would be rooting against Aaron Rogers to prove that it wasn’t just Zack Wilson as far as that goes the Bears are going to be doing HBO’s Hard Knock R training camp it’s the first appearance on the show and mclaskey the team G the chairman had been opposed for years but now they got Caleb Williams well he’s still opposed though I’m opposed to it too but the NBA bylaws essentially stipulate they can force any team to do it oh I I still think it’s staged I would agree with you I mean they know the cameras are there you you can’t deny it well you can you can watch half the people when they’re walking to Hey kid bring your clipboard look at the camera like watch this yeah and that’s pretty much what we have every year you’re going to get cut there’s going to more guys uh what they’re going to they’re going to cut like 40 guys during the course of training camp they bringing about 90 90 man roster down to 53 and then yeah they have like 16 guys on a practice squad so yeah I don’t to me that’s that’s run its course so things are good for a bit and then they it it tends to be stale you got to you got to be able to repeat it and I know what you’re thinking oh PK you’ve been doing this radio a long time you’re still blah blah blah I got it well fortunately the bosses don’t think that uh because every season is new there’s no stale when we start college football in August it’ll be brand new that’s what’s exciting about that and then the Jazz will starting obviously we got NHL coming on on board so every season is fresh unto itself nothing is repeated maybe you lose too much uh there’s no such thing as winning too much losing too much yeah uh so I don’t have HBO anyway so I I I can’t really watch it uh unless they give me the free stuff Saints former Saints QB ju Brees might have played several years if not for the degeneration his right throwing shoulder hey man my arm was still working I probably would have played another three years my body feels great my body can play my arm right now can’t unfortunately that’s what kind of forced me to step away and it was time too well we it was time too and that that’s the key it was time and and most folks yeah that’s the way it is the some form of body breaking down I mean look at pton Manning that wing was like a sad flying duck at the end Peyton Manning won that excuse me that Super Bowl with Denver thanks to his defense yeah no thanks to that arm but that stuff happens that’s that’s the idea about it that’s the way it works and we often talk about how things might have looked differently in sports history the Drew Bree thing that shoulder reconstruction he had coming out of San Diego ultimately Landing in New Orleans who knows right then whole Nick Sabin does he stick in Miami had he signed Drew Brees with Miami Dolphin like there’s a wow so the degenerative shoulder I completely get because it’s been surgically reconstructed before yeah it happens that’s essentially why pitchers retire they lose their fast ball they get hurt it’s essentially why he retired he lost his fast ball yeah he could he couldn’t throw BB sense Ravens QB Lamar Jackson he was there the first voluntary otaa head coach Jimmy Harbaugh that’d be John Harbaugh shocked his absence up to the workouts happens from the workouts it it’s this time of year it’s a voluntary time because Jackson only been there one time it’s not really something that we comment on we can’t and that’s just the time of year it is so I can’t speak for anybody that’s not here Josh Jackson Johnson Johnson J Johnson Jackson the basketball player but Josh Johnson’s QB and Jackson’s absence he’ll be there he’ll be really good and he lost some poundage I didn’t think he needed to I thought he was already good as he was but that’s the NFL man that’s why you got to have these OTAs so the NFL keeps itself in the news and goes year round almost to the point where college football is doing the same thing and let’s get to that # colge football ESPN is announcing it will show approximately 1,000 college football games across all platforms which includes TV and streaming this season starting in week Zippo and concluding with the cfp national Championship presented by AT&T and that’s going to be Monday January 20th at mercedesbenz Stadium or they’re moving that back used to be the first Monday in now you have the expand January now it’s moving back uh pretty soon the NFL they’re going to be playing finishing on President’s Day oh yeah that that they’re going to go to an 18 game regular season they push the Super Bowl to President’s Day weekend and they talk about having a national holiday the Monday after the Super Bowl well guess what just have the national holiday that’s right around that yeah there you go as far as that goes and they came out with some times yesterday you know these right Yak we’ve got both BYU and Utah their first games are going to be on ESPN plus M Big 12 now on ESPN plus yep so how about that you got to buy streaming if you want to watch your Utes and cougars kick the crap out of some lower level team in Gs games man they’re going to be on that on that Network and I’m going to venture a guess that at least two other BYU games end up now on ESPN plus this season reg your season games huh I think so now that all kind of depends are you pointing to specific ones or you just just generalizing generalizing because if the Cougars are middling 500 team they very well could do that whereas Utah with them being a favorite in the Big 12 you already saw the announcements they’re on ESPN they’re on Fox they’re getting they’re getting the big networks because they’re one of the conference favorites they certainly are yeah I think it’ll be one of three teams that will be the favorite it’ll be them Oklahoma State or Kansas State correct yeah I think if fish had stayed in Tucson I would put the cats in there sure but as we’ve been saying all along it does and the cats very well could win it who knows but you don’t need to win it you just need to finish in second get to Dallas that’s the whole Mantra get to Dallas in December Dallas in December that’s what you’re looking for Dallas in December see guys put that banner up right now I’m giving you free marketing Dallas in December that’s what you want and then win that ball game when you get there SEC commissioner Greg sanki acknowledged that why while College athletics is quote unquote uncharted waters he believes the division one schools can continue to operate together his conference is prepared to quote take a leadership role as they navigate the historic change the NCA the SEC has formed multiple working groups to help tackle all these heavy issues looming over after the house versus NCA settlement and so Gramps Rising he’s not going to be eligible is that the latest word yeah so it’s stipulated that if you had sat out in 2019 2020 as he had you would be eligible potentially for another year but there are some subheadings underneath the section of that that say that if you’ve transferred multiple times or you’ve already essentially worked played out your eligibility yeah you’re not eligible for that so he’s not you can read Michelle Bodkins got a story on that on KSL sports.com big tip of the cap to Michelle she did the leg work on that that was a check that out and so this finally is going to be his last year NCA and a coalition of states are suing the organization announc a proposed settlement of that lawsuit yesterday that would allow athletes to be immediately eligible to play no matter how many times they transfer and that’s what we’re talking about and would offer those who were sideline an extra year ibility well okay yeah whatever man keep this thing going as long as possible but the bottom line is rising is got uh 13 games 14 maybe 15 we’ll see how far they can go and then make his money and go on and try to prepare for the NFL at that point he’d be 26 years old cuz he just turned 25 in May so I’m not sure there’s something at the end of the rainbow there hopefully for him it is let’s move on to baseball # Major League Baseball first pitch swinging a highfly ball deep to Center back goes Carol and it is gone for a home run JB Martinez gives the mits the lead as he homers into the batter’s eye just to the left of the Home Run Apple casing the MS are leading by a score of 3-2 2-1 swing at a high fly Ball Deep Left Field Ward turning he’s watching it is long gone just to the right of the bullpen in left field that’s highr rocket power off the bat of Aaron judge a two-run shot and the Yankees have a 2-1 lead swinging the ball lifted in the air to right back BL it’s over his head and Richie palasio has walked it off cierro TRS home from third the Rays have their second walkoff in as many days here the two New York teams there JD Martinez are now plays for the Mets he crushed a 430 fot bomb to give the Mets the lead over the Diamondbacks 3 to2 which is ending up the final score and then Aaron judge remember he got off to a slow start he said just wait well he was right he’s got 18 home runs which lead the major leagues and that’s who we were talking about with DJ a while back listed a few guys and I said well I’m going to go with Aaron judge he’s healthy he is a long bomber with the baseball and the Yankees who are just kicking butt they beat the Angels who suck and suck again trout is out as you know has been for a good while unfortunate and then you heard the Rays with their second walkoff in a row all off of the Athletics I’m going to see the Athletics play here very soon Richie palasio in the 12th inning as far as that goes the Cubs their Bullpen stinks and Gary Sanchez the former Yankee it’s home run and the Brewers probably a surprised team in that n Central you know they lost some players lost their manager to the Cubs Council but they’re looking pretty good there you go as far as that and the Astros oh man they stink this year but they were not swept they beat the Mariners for Zippo the bees lost 13-3 to the Reno Aces they’re back at it tonight first pitch is 7:35 and coverage right here on the Zone will be in at 7:20 p.m. with our good friend Tony Parks # RSL can they keep it going RSL 82 and six they’re going to host those F seers from Austin who’s 65 and five the F seers of Austin I like that I’m start using that I’m going to just start like SC of Orlando or and ciders that’s tomorrow night weather should be great at the America first field get out there and watch them play are you doing the pregame and stuff I will be doing preh have and post game our good friend David James will not be on the broadcast tomorrow night he won’t yep sounds like I think Landon Southwick is going to be filling in our good friend spena will also be uh on the call versus doing preh half and post with Lauren and myself okay 7:30 coverage on the Zone 6:30 the Orel prematch show and Pao Maston will be joining us at 9:00 9:05 were in there as they we got a lot to talk about with him and they they’re finding ways to get the job done and you wonder how long they can keep it up that’d be great there you go with Rell # NHL the rebound is taken out of arms way linan then on for londell left side of the circle londell a shot and he scores it t londell gives the Panthers their first lead of the night he lets it rip out of the left Circle it’s two W with 938 to play here in the third woohoo that goal in the decisive period lifts Florida to the 3-2 series winning the Eastern Conference over the Rangers and you got Edmund and Dallas they’re tonight game five of their Series so you got 132 one22 so it’ll obviously go 3-2 and that’s 6:30 p.m. tonight it’s on TNT as hockey is moving towards the final and looking like long Series in both we’ll see who advances to the cup there and did we mention this yesterday that we’re down to four names apparently with yeah yeah yeah with uh um with Jay okay yeah making sure so yeah that’s the report or at least the appearances that were down to four names now we’ll see WB billionaire went on McAfee he did an impromptu look who’s calling me it’s andb back billionaire them guys is boys they are boys what’s trending brought to you by Shamrock pring no job too big or too small get to Personal Touch with Shamrock pring okay coming up we got three guests we got David lack at 805 we got Kevin young Buu men’s basketball coach is that set that’s going to happen uh I was just asked for some copy points so yeah we’re looking like it’s going to go down and you are you willing to go public with their assistant coaches I mean Nick Robinson went on basically said goodbye right social media that’s what it appears do you want to talk about that or you want to keep it secret we’ll keep it quiet for now okay but what what they got three more possibilities to hire so yeah the the stipulations are now you can have up to five assistant coaches BYU carried four last year but Kevin young is going to carry all five ma yeah so he’s got three on board now no well two on board currently but then but he’s got the guy from Stanford and Chris but then he’s got what is he director what’s his what’s his he’s the he’s the GM of the program he’s the director okay so that’s not an assistant coach but he’ll be on the sidelines during games right I would assume so yeah yeah but you have three more assistant uh I’ve been told that all three are filled it’s just a matter of time before they are officially announced announced okay well I I’ll mention one name Tim Fanning get to know that name Tim Fanning MH he was introduced last week at the uh sons and fathers father and sons and he was introduced as a quote friend of the program that is quote for he’s going to be hired just a matter of time okay fine yeah I don’t really care who they hire uh I care uh that Kevin young wants to hire him if he wants to hire him then that must mean they’re pretty good he’s reaching out to guys he’s worked with in the past in the G league in the NBA and a lot of you guys have that type okay what I think is interesting though is that they’ll only chis Chris Burgess he’s the only LDS guy so far as I’m aware yeah yeah outside of Kevin young himself well I’m talking about his staff yeah but yeah on his staff that wasn’t the case no usually it’s a vast majority if not full majority of members yes I mean I don’t have any problem with that but I find it that’s who he thinks should be the his assistants and on his staff so be it man well he’s got I don’t know if you’ve seen this PK and this is actually college basketball uh AJ Deans the number one rated recruit in the upcoming recruiting class in college basketball he’s going to be playing at that Utah Prep Academy that’s moving to Hurricane next year uh his parents and him are going to make an official visit to BYU on Monday it’s the only school he’s planning on visiting while he comes out to check out his new Prep Academy he’s going to be playing for this fall did you just hash college basketball hash colge basketball and so there’s a you it’s down in Hurricane it’s a new Academy so this was the old RSL Basketball Academy that was out of the RSL practice facility when Ryan Smith bought RSL there are NBA stipulations you can’t have a prep academy that you can’t own that so he had to divest himself of that they have been kind of floating around the Salt Lake Valley trying to find a home I believe they were partnering with a couple of local private high schools to have a space to live in temporarily there’s an academy down there used to be called Diamond Ranch Academy since ceased operations in Hurrican Utah Prep Academy is moving in there I know exactly where it is most of us if you’ve been down you know where I’m talking about but yeah they built a water Parker right across the street and it’s on the way to San Hollow Bing uh the reservoir or the golf course yeah so that’s where the Utah Prep Academy is moving into and AJ Debona who is he was a Gatorade Player of the Year in his State home state of Massachusetts is a ninth grader he’s been playing all these prep acmy since then number one recruit in next year’s recruiting cycle that’s where he’s playing next year and he’s coming out to check it out in person this coming week and he’s going to make an unofficial visit to BYU as part of that TR who’s coaching that you know uh I don’t know who the current coach was it was Dave Evans for a little bit there but I don’t know who the current staff is so obviously they have to move down to uh hurricane yes so deona will be playing and living down in Hurricane for the and then they play national teams yeah they’re in that uh EB or they call that League like the Finley Prep Academy in Vegas let’s put This Way Phoenix has got two or three of them they’re not competing for Utah’s high school state championships they’re competing for national championships against the other prep academies across the country Brewster prep Finley yeah all of them now yeah there you go okay that is what’s trending and coming up at 9:05 Pablo Mone now coming up next man it’s that time hey I thought about this long and hard yesterday yak and sure you did I’m not going to change my vote okay my vote’s going to remain the same I thought about it yesterday and we will get to that next stay with us 975 KSL Sports Zone accessing this is H sson and Scotty G Kurt Heen NBC Sports probasketballtalk.com why is it really cool to make fun of Rudy goar right now yeah I don’t know you know certainly there was the co stuff there’s moments where you kind of like cringe but it’s also like I will tell you my personal experience just interviewing him a couple of times honestly he’s a great interview like he gives you good answers he’s honest he’s not somebody who’s come through the pr machine and just kind of gives you the pat answers like he gives you honest good answers and most media members I know are pretty fond of him for whatever reason he just rubs other players the wrong way maybe they feel like he doesn’t deserve the four defensive players of the year but I think he’s the best rim protector of a generation I think he does catch Hansen Scotty weekdays from noon to 3 on 975 the KSL Sports H takes your toast it’s brought to you by S freed and Jensen you know they’ve been serving Utah for 30 years 30 years of service for Utah yeah I’ve used them good people over there all right what am I talking about I thought about it long and hard I’m not going to change my vote it’s that time of year where the Besties just celebrated their 10y year reun or not reunion their 10y year anniversary 10 year reunion they’re going to go on a little bit of a l here and get back together okay and we got big posters of them somebody’s got to take them down I’m not going to look at those guys mugs every day like that they’re life size and I got to look at two of them before I walk into the office okay enough I’ll give them this week but come on and they do their 60 and 60 well I’m going to cut to the chase who should be number one I’ve thought about it my vote is not going to change it’s going to stay the same obviously I’m having fun with some other crap uh but who should be when they get to it and when I don’t know when they’re starting UH 60 days okay so 60 days from there uh not days but uh working days business days who should be number one who should be the candidates for number one we’re going to have candidates from three schools we’ll start in Logan who should be the candidates Yakami got the new quarterback Spencer petris yes he’s going to be on on the list I right with unproven quarterbacks I I know that he’s proven to a level but at a new program and we have just haven’t seen him in game action in this offense I just got questions about that understood Jaylen Royals though that dude Royal yeah he can absolutely ball up at Utah State I that is maybe the most underappreciated wide receiver in the state right now he’s because he’s at Utah State yeah he’s he’s a legit number one type wide receiver he is awesome got better as the season progressed and two you know I wonder if it’s a little bit of a Devon V there where they were running quarterbacks so that circus that Utah was forced to endure last year once they settled on Barnes we saw Devon a take off correct to the point himself to he got himself being a draft pick right Broncos yes he’s playing for Broncos now wish him the best with love love he was on our show last week or last year every week and he was a great interview and i’ interviewed him many times before would love to see him make it comes to Utah as a walk-on and gets himself drafted and hopefully he can find himself on the Broncos and stick for a good while so the point I’m making is if they have a a singular quarterback which I hope all of them have and they don’t have a bunch of injuries that uh Royals maybe could take off even more anybody else oh Larson Larson yeah I he’s like the heart and soul of that defense and local kid grew up in Cash Valley putting on for his hometown University yeah he’s probably the other guy I would mention on that list okay so we got three dudes from Utah State and there’ll be some surprises guys will rise up there’ll be some newcomers always are especially with transfers and they got some JC guys and all that stuff did uh the running back did he ever decide where he was going I don’t know the kid from citos yeah I don’t recall if he did or not yeah I I don’t remember hearing it yeah if he did I I can Google that because I thought he was going to be uh a player but he went in the transfer portal late didn’t he was it after Spring ball might have been doring it was in I think it was right as yeah it was later in Spring ball if it if it wasn’t right afterward okay so BYU potential I would call them the number one 60 60 or you know Player of the Year whatever it might be uh for BYU we can’t put a quarterback on the list it’s capable they hope so but we can’t put one on there we’re talking about number one yeah so they were actually the I’m you’re talking about the besties H and Scotty they actually hauled me into one of their meetings when they’re planning for this and said what do you think do we put all three quarterbacks that were in the running m hillstead Gary B I’ve got no problem put them all three on there they thought about putting all three on but they felt like that would have uh put other guys off of this 60 and 60 list then make it 75 I mean what the hell who cares you could have done yeah sure but the Essen came down to and I agreed with them it’s tough to put anybody on there you don’t know if they’re going to be the guy and that’s BYU is hoping that one of these guys is going to step up and you got to have that happen they need it well sure yeah if they want to have any success you got to have somebody step up so if you were looking at the BYU thing I know this sounds crazy enough but i’ put Connor pay as their number one he was the number one guy I had on the list like he is the heart and soul that offensive line uh most of you know I do a BYU podcast I’ve had him joining me for the last year on it and he has been adamant uh to the point of almost combative with BYU fans that he is not accepting what happened last year and he is hellbent on making sure that they turn it around hellbent yeah wow mhm you you’re hellbent I mean and we know that the Utes they’re Heaven bent Heaven bent yeah exactly this is a higher plane over there yeah no uh pay was my number one guy okay I had a couple other guys okay see if you put them on there I’m gonna flip over the defensive line Tyler baddy I had baddy okay the issue is BYU’s pass rush is horrendous awful insert whatever adjective you want yeah yeah they got to get they got to get better and baddy is the most proven guy on that dline he’s got to help lead the way this year I had two defensive guys is it our other guy is that is it our guy Ben Bywater I did not have Ben oh no Ben okay if Ben is healthy that’s true that’s a big question mark yeah so obviously that uh shoulder I can still picture you were sitting right next to me in Kansas when he went s jogging off you knew that we’ve seen that before man and it was ugly and he missed the whole season has had surgery yada y I did not have we’re talking about number one I did not have Ben the number one okay so I got two other guys Jacob Robinson Bing go okay the other only other guy I had on the list in terms of um no actually wasn’t Harper I was goingon to I was gonna say Jack Jack Kelly but Jacob Robinson proven commodity yeah big play waiting to happen when he’s on the field at cornerback and he’s got to lead that cornerback unit this year there’s no Eddie Hecker there’s no Camden Garrett it’s the Jacob Robinson show smaller dude yes Fearless but he he’s made he’s a playmaker man yeah absolutely Fearless despite his diminutive uh size and he he readily acknowledges that he’s not the biggest guy on the field right he reminds me impact in the secondary secondary of what kukua had years ago yeah I would agree with that steep stepping in big moments making big plays when you need them are we missing anybody else on the offense I’m a little nervous for BYU sake because I don’t have any skill players maybe LJ Martin but I can’t go there yet not yet it’s not shown enough capable of showing it and if you want to talk about potential the guy I would have on the offense it’s Keanu Hill he’s making a transition to tight end I know that and position changes especially late in the career like he has done can be iffy uh but everything we heard SL saww in Spring ball indicates that that is going to fit him fantastically okay but in order for that to happen you need have a quarterback and get him the ball yeah yeah that’s why LJ Martin probably get moves ahead because running backs can control more of that right and the offensive line been telling us it’s supposed to be better new coach blah guys got their back Conor pay’s irritated and I can understand why well and we had Ron mcbrien here and he was TJ Woods as his guy like Yeah couple of guys on the offensive line that we like K yeah K will lauo Lao yeah uh so you got that uh so I’m expecting them to have success there but I just don’t know how the trigger man’s going to be sure and that’s that’s a you got to have a quarterback you got to have somebody emerge to me I can go with what Scotty was talking about where he thinks at some point hillstead is going to take over if hillstead is healthy PK I I this is just neither here nor there I called his first ever high school start for KSL Sports rewind like and I got out there this kid was 5’9 510 and I’m talking to the coaches before the game hey pay attention to this uh hillstead kid and I look over and he’s warming up I’m like the pipsqueak that weighs 150 lbs right there the pipsqueak he was Tiny But PK he got on the field and he started just slinging balls all over the field and starts running around dudes you had thought had him dead to rights yeah when he’s uh when he’s healthy and he’s bulked up now he’s about 190 probably for sure but when he’s healthy the kid is an absolutely Dynamic Athlete right right and I don’t I watch a little bit more High School than I have in recent years uh I don’t know that I ever saw him play in high school but I saw him play up in Logan and he proved he could play and I’ve talked to people right so I don’t know that will get the job at any point because I don’t know who’s going to get the job at any point uh the guys who cover it dayto day are telling me R laugh at the start and we’ll see and if I’m red SL I hope uh that I hold on to the job and the other guys push me but away they go and I think that’s best for BYU we’ll see how that plays out okay now for Utah you you know Utah’s in a great spot there’s no doubt about it and I can list several guys obviously you got to put Rising on list Rising is number one that’s you know they’ve got some guys like do I overlook Junior tuna I don’t you shouldn’t do I overlook Landon Lander Barton you shouldn’t no they’ve had some really good linebackers in that program since they got in the conference right and I can argue that Barton a healthy Barton who I think would be in his last year to make his Mark professionally I can argue he’s the best of the best he’s the yeah it comes from a very athletic family we all know this he has had some brothers who have accomplished from some very big things at Utah and I have some bias there but man know the family a little bit uh we’ll talk to his mother uh where’s he going this week on recruiting trips and where wasn’t he going I mean he literally probably could have gone anywhere he wanted no he could yeah he he he could have gone anywhere in the country there’s no doubt about that my wife taught him in the sixth grade hey and she told me sixth grade you want Little sixth grade pipsqueak and what a phenomenal athlete he is and he’s done nothing to disappoint he’s lived he got injured last year unfortunately missed a bunch of games but he’s lived up to the promise and I expect him to have a big year so my guys on Utah are rising ton Barton anybody else on offense well we had Jason sheir on not that long ago to talk about Arizona and you asked him the question about Dorian singer if he can recreate what he did at Arizona speaking of singer he would be Utah’s number one wide receiver and by far unlike many of the wide receivers they’ve had in the pack what was then the Pack 12 era like he he has legit Star Quality material in him and I’m I know they’ve had V Bailey I know they’ve had other good wide receivers over the years but he has the potential to really stand out from the crowd if if he can Channel what he had at Arizona versus what happened to USC well that that was that was a literal night and day man yeah with you have a thousand Y and then he didn’t get to 300 correct at SC and that oneye experiment was a bust uh but see I don’t even know that they go to him that much what about keithy well you know what what do they do with with Kei guys appr Carson Ryan Miki Tanga like they’ve got a bunch of tight end you believe in my Landon King out of the equation there for and all four of those tight ends by the way I’m I’m probably shouldn’t be revealing this you can see it online all four of those tight ends are on this list yeah does do the fans get to vote yeah they do oh you can go to KSL sports.com you can vote on it yourself is it open now CU I did it last night it is open now yes you can you can cast your ballot as a fan go to KSL sports.com we do incorporate a fan vote into the final ranking no I was joking about how I was uh watching Fox News in the fourth quarter I was not you were voting I was Voting yeah running down the list and I’m moving because I’m going out of town so I’m moving guys all over the place and so oh wait a second I got this guy too low I got this guy too high I got to admit when I get down in the 40s I don’t obsess over it that much but I’d say the first 30 I must have moved guys 15 times and it’s like it’s like approaching 10 o’clock and I got to go to bed I got I got to finish this thing thing up here cuz it’s somewhat arbitrary whether you’re 15 or 16 you know you’re one of the 60 best players in the state congratulations I’m looking at you know the top 25 then I’m looking at the top 30 maybe I extended it to 40 once I got past that I didn’t obsess so I think in in in the final analysis I think you’ll end up with Rising will be number one because he’s quarterback he’s the most proven commodity and he’s a quarterback did I mention that he’s a quarterback because that’s pretty important obviously yeah but I think and we would never although last year my last two years I did not go with quarterbacks last year I went with sua and I realized he’s an offensive lineman but that’s who I went with the year before I went with noua and I think both both of them were very valid yeah picks I went away from quarterbacks last year but this year with Rising back was a 14-year veteran him and Aaron Rogers uh battling out there for longest tenure in college and in the NFL I’m going to go with Rising but and I think if I went with number two I’d go with uh pay or Barton and then the other guys we already listed all right I guess you can get on there at the KSL Sports Zone and you can vote for your uh self who you like who should be on that list it’s fun it’s fun to talk about as we start gearing up for the countdown to college Amphitheater I shouldn’t say little but it’s beautiful Arena or facility country guy seen him once oh jeez there’s a a bunch of options there who is Walker Haze a walker Haze okay yeah those are are two both outdoor in the summer close by in my town even where I reside beautiful Sandy City Utah how about that yeah those are my two that I’ve got on board we’ll see if I add any others probably not maybe but don’t have any on the docket right now if anybody wants to give me free tickets maybe I’ll go you get online find my email ship them to me forward them to me I’ve got three MLB games that I’m probably I’ve already seen one in Arizona I got one coming up in Georgia and then I’ll probably have one in San Diego later this summer great time of year certainly schools out summer vacation is upon us can Canon District closed up shop yesterday and now we prepare for the summer and then the start of high school football but first among many things we’ve got to get through we’ve got to get through the NBA finals and we’ll have lock coming up here in about 10 minutes one thing I’ve learned I’ve learned over and over again and I think we see it again this year is you have got to have two BigTime scores at the top of your roster if you want to advance and go deep and they’ve got to be consistent they’ve got to be players that are high level All-Star caliber and you look at Boston and you look at Dallas and Dallas only had 50 wins in the regular season I mean that’s a good season 50 wins but we expect our finals teams I think at least I do to have more than 50 to go beyond that but that’s what they had good for them huh and they got it done by beating Minnesota Minn just didn’t have the consistency in these this postseason and Dallas which finished fifth good or bad for the NBA that the fifth place team can go in there and get it when you look at the teams that were ahead of them you know the uh Minnesota knocking off Denver I think did Dallas a nice favor right and those uh teams you had Oklahoma City and and Denver at 5 7 and and Minnesota at 56 so they were all right there together uh but I don’t think Minnesota had the consistency and then you look at what Dallas had they had it in the postseason because they got two big time scores on the top of their roster and that’s something that is an absolute 100% requirement to be able to have that and they have it with Dage the all-around player and Irving doing his thing don’t underestimate how good Irving is and I think he’s a big game player too I think he’s super clutch yeah but how about that you know does this do something against the regular season because you look at donic in the regular season now they play 82 games Dage 66 so he got one above the requirement for the all League stuff but uh Kyrie Irving games played 58 I think donic actually played in 70 games I think I might have said 66 I had 65 on my mind uh but uh Irving only 58 but it didn’t matter man you need two BigTime scores and the same thing over there with the Boston Celtics obviously with Jason Tatum and our guy Jaylen brown two big time scores how can the Jazz get two big time scores do they have two BigTime scores no they don’t is Markin in a BigTime score I don’t know yet not sure he never played a playoff game how can I know can he be I believe he can I think he’s got that capability I think he’s got the game he’s got the game to be a big time score in the postseason but they’ve got to find another guy who can do that there’s just no question and then you fill around with defensive guys guys who can hit open shots and that’s what Dallas has that’s what Boston has you know peripheral guys who have the ability on any given night to be really really good you need that too maybe kante George can be that kind of guy maybe he’s not an elite level 25o game guy every game but he can do it occasionally and I think you need that that’s important and then you need your Defenders you need your role players right that’s how you build a team but you got to have two 25o guys at the top leading the way we’ll talk to Dave talk about that in the NBA finals next stay with us 975 the KSL Sports Zone David Lock’s weekly interview is brought to you by the Murdoch Auto team for sure all right David lock good morning how the heck are you I’m great PK how are you ah outstanding man Summer’s school’s out for the summer for some not quite yet in my family school is not out forever but we’re approaching that if you know what I mean one more year I mean you’re just I mean the thing is you’re always learning PK okay I mean that’s just the essence of who you are and so you know why you really school’s never out for you I mean you are you are just constantly learning as I move into summer school as far as yeah well in the Sports World you constantly learn and Dallas man I learned that when Kyrie Irving wants to play ball he’s really good and I think it’s it to me you know I’ve been watching I said this earlier I’ve been watching the NBA Finals since it was taped delayed when I was a teenager so it’s not like uh I’m Johnny come lately to this sport I’ve been involved with it in terms of Interest my whole life but it’s fun to see Irving put aside all the other stuff and then be willing I don’t want to say second fiddle because that’s too light of a term but but be willing to play off donic and let donic lead and then Irving do his thing and there are two Dynamic players that right now I give them a serious chance against Boston how do you evaluate to finals well I’m such a Luca believer that I certain I certainly do give them a chance like I I you know I I just think Luca’s as good as any player in the NBA and is truly unguardable and so yeah like I have a hard time thinking that anyone’s going to be able to guard Luca and slow him down but Boston’s top five is just so good if porzingis is back and then you add Horford Off the Bench Boston just got a lot more talent and so it’s hard for me to hard for me to say that I think that Boston um wins this doesn’t win this series that’s fair I guess for me I’m always a little more biased towards the Western Conference teams because those are the teams that I focus more on relative to the Jazz than I do the East because we only see them a couple of times a year playing the Jazz and they’re not competing in the standings dayto day so I watch the West a little bit more I think Dallas has got something special going on but you know Boston yeah they’ve got role players that have the ability to be more than role players on a given night and I think we saw that last year with Denver obviously they got the two guys at top but they had a couple other guys two three other guys that have the opportunity to be more than role players on a given night how important do you think that aspect of it is in building a team that can win it all is have those role players that they may trade off from game to game but over the course of the season and the Playoff Series have the ability to be more than just a role player so yeah I mean I agree with you I think that the the thing that happens here that I think is most important is you know which guys are able to make some plays right so we start to look at this and you know what I basically just said in the previous answer is that I just have more belief that Drew holiday Derek white pton Pritchard Al Horford right are making shots then Derek Jones PJ Washington Maxi kleba and Josh green on the other end that assumes that Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown can come close to what Luca and Kyrie are doing and they might not be able to do that like for all of our Taco role players it it might come back to where you started this conversation with I mean what did Kyrie and Luca both have last night 33 or 36 uh they tied for 36 for a combination of 72 yeah like I don’t know that I think Jason Brown Jason Jaylen Brown and Jason Tatum can match that every night that’s what I’m saying yeah that’s what it’s gonna take yeah they have to match that and then because Derek Jones and PJ Washington and Josh Green are just good enough right well then then they’re in trouble then then you’re right you know I I got asked the other day on the show um trying to think I think I was with I might have been with Alex and and and Jeremiah and I was doing a crappy interview um and they asked me at the time like who you got in Dallas Minnesota and for whatever weird reason I actually hadn’t thought about it yet like you know I was just almost kind of a spectator and I had just not taken a moment to be who win and it took me a few minutes to kind of understand what I was trying to get to and finally what I got to was you know what I’m taking Dallas because they’re just going to get better looks Luc is just so good they’re getting better looks the whole time and that might be true in this series too you know as good as Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown are they don’t get the greatest looks in the world but boy you play with Luca you get Great Looks every single time I like it it relates to what the Jazz are trying to do in by the way I want to go back to a conversation go ahead I don’t know if you remember I think it was about this time last year yeah and somehow some somehow we got into some concept here in the jazz fan base like Luca was going to be available yeah yeah yeah I remember yeah show yeah and I think you asked me like what do you give up for LCA do you remember my answer yeah everything everything like every single asset every single piece every single player oh yeah every single everything and uh I will stand by that by the way yeah I’d even throw in the uh radio play-by-play broadcaster uh well Chuck Cooper scene is way better would probably ruin the deal by the way for those who are play byplay like if you’re a young aspiring play byplay or you like play byplay sea Grande of the Celtics Chuck super and the Mavericks you know both probably in the top five game callers in the NBA um Chuck’s done a lot of national stuff so is Sean Sean’s Sean and Cedric are probably the best tandem in the league so if anyone wants to listen to that kind of stuff they probably like it that’s what I think is what I remember recall of Cedric Maxwell yeah he’s so fun he’s so fun you know he’s really fun and you know Jim chones on the Cleveland broadcast is really fun you got to give credit to some of these guys been around for a long time Ron Boon fits into this they still love it like you can feel it when you listen to them they still love it it’s it’s a great it’s a great tribute and a great model for all of us to live by I’ve recited that answer so many times that DJ knows it by heart when we talk about donich I just go right to you everything what do you give up everything I remember I remember vividly yeah yeah he’s just so great and you know what’s what I think and I don’t know this will become the storyline but I think should be the story line and obviously he’s got to win it um which is silly but um he’s really early like he’s really really early 25 and yeah I mean is he 25 he’s 25 he turned 25 in February okay I mean I think if we go back and look at Michael and 27 go back yeah I mean magic was obviously early but he had Kareem with him did and Yannis was Yannis was 27 WI yeah the Lakers were loaded Norm Nixon right joic joic was 2728 um staff I think was 27 yeah uh Duncan had David Robinson with him so hard to tell but yeah feels you know and but Luca’s been early for Luca’s been early forever right Luca won the Euro League at 18 and you know one of the more incredible championships was him taking uh Slovenia to win um what you know I think what was it Euro Cup uh FEA World Cup or something of that whatever it was when he was 18 17 18 years old so he’s been early on everything he’s really he’s really you know he’s really one of the greatest players the game seen at this point in his career and he and he’s showing it now in a in a prime fashion and seems to be getting healthier by The Game and that I think you know the June 6th and the schedule here is a big is advantageous to the Celtics for porzingis but it’s advantageous much more for the Mavericks for Luca yeah I got you it seems to mean in order to have success you got to have two guys who can get you 25 every night and feels like it yeah that’s a good observation I mean it we’re in an interesting era in the NBA right now where like the Vogue thing is to like you got a double team you got a double team and I’m not sure I’m a fan of double teaming I just kind of go back to like even back to Jerry Sloan like where you didn’t want to double Michael at 35 fet because it makes the rest of the floor four on three maybe that’s still pounded into me I do kind of agree with that concept like I do kind of believe that yeah like you know if you’re opening up the whole rest of the floor to four on three these guys are too good well if you open up the floor to four on three and they have a Kyrie Irving then they are then it’s and he’s going to beat that guy and now it’s four on two like oh man you’re just giving up wide open looks all the time so yeah I do think you have to have one guy that obviously bends the defense and then another guy that can take advantage of it and that indirectly is the way of you know you got to have two guys that can drop 25 right and I’m not sure about marketing because he hasn’t played in the playoff game but I think he can do it uh given the opportunity I think he’s I think he’s good enough I’m confident in his skill set uh and then we saw some report I I think it’s sort of a kind of a duh that the that Hoops hype or somebody put out there the Jazz are willing to package their picks well if you go back to the an talking about how they are going big game hunting well of course my thought I got a couple thoughts for you the first one is big game hunting which is a good a nice catchphrase is it capable of Landing this very off seon somebody who can get you 25 yeah probably you get Trey young Trey young like now you gotta decide whether you want a 6 foot one point guard just drafted a six fo4 point guard right I think there’s a chance it could give you car get you Carl Anthony towns Minnesota’s got real financial problems I think towns is the one they move and NZ re and hope Jade McDaniels develops and Anthony Edwards is obviously the key to their franchise yeah cat could probably get close to 25 um not consistent you know that’s probably it 25 is a lot I know how many guys in the NBA averaged 25 last year I’d have to look it up I’m always a little stunned that more guys do this than I think you know like scoring’s up and there’s just so much talent I’m always a little stunned when I look like oh they can’t be more than 12 guys that average 20 and then you look and it’s like oh well there’s actually 26 guys that average 20 um so I think it might be more than I think but 25’s a lot yeah I I got playoff game playoff game scoring averages for the best players is often up because you’re just valuing every possession so much more that you’re you know in the regular season you’re kind of willing to have three or four possessions where Luca and Kyrie don’t Dominate and don’t touch because the rest of the guys need their flowers and you’re going to let Tim Hardway take some wild shots like in the playoffs you’re not doing that anymore so then those guys getting 33 and 36 you know with some regularity um but I um but 25 games a lot so I think those would be the only two my fun scenario that I keep playing around with just for the take talk radio talk and I think it’s just an interesting one to guge fans of where they are and what they want is you go trade for Trey young and Carl Anthony towns I don’t think you could ever win a championship with that it would be really weird it’s two Mercurial players you would be a top five offense which means you would come close to winning 4850 games and you’d be re the most entertaining team in the NBA you’d be following a little bit of the Indiana Pacer model where we’re just going to like Run and Gun and score and probably would cost you keante somewhere along the way probably wouldn’t cost you Lowry and you’re fun and you win a lot of games you’re probably not have the like Championship level guy you have three guys in the top 35 in the NBA and so you win a lot of games and you score a buttload like be really fun to call I don’t know if it’s but I it doesn’t fit it frankly doesn’t fit the Ryan Smith Danny GES Justin Zan going to win a championship unless you believe you’re going to be able to Parlay Trey young and Carl Anthony towns into your big game hunting I and there’s some argument to that we have to improve our overall talent to be able to go big game hunting right now I’m not sure we have enough pieces in our puzzle to go get the biggest you know players right now we have enough draft assets but I’m not sure we have enough pieces to go get that big game hunting well that’s what I’m talking about yeah exactly David lock joining us and that’s that’s my whole point is can they go big game I know they want to I get it we all want them to we all want them to start cracking on the door 50 wins and see where that takes you go from there but are what they have available is it enough to get one or both those players or that you already mentioned or whomever it might be well it’s hard too because like those if if you’re playing around with those two players like just staying with the hypothetical I do think those are the two best players that will be traded this offseason are Trey young and Carl Anthony towns and I don’t have the numbers off the top of my head but Trad that making 40 I think 45 and Carl Anthony towns is probably making close to the same so you have to have to trade $80 million in salary to go get those players unless you’re going to take some money in because you’re far enough under the cap which we are so you I’d have to understand the cap Dynamics but it actually gets hard to go you know get multiple players you gota be able to trade $80 million of salary and then have some players left that in this case that’s not totally specifically correct but it’s it’s close and that’s you know that’s where this gets really tricky is like our highest paid player is John Collins at 24 I was looking at his contract today like John Collins contract when he was in Atlanta was like an albatross that they couldn’t get R rid of and had to give away for free it’s I think it’s a pretty mundane contract for a guy who’s a pretty much a Bonafide NBA starter 24 million I mean a starter range is now 30 so that’s now like a totally reasonable number the contracts we have are every single one of them is is really really reasonable um which actually sometimes is a detriment because you got to trade money to get money gotcha how about a step down like maybe a Brandon Ingram or a Kyle kosma this we get into a territory that I I this one just gets super complicated to me conceptually so we’ be better and I so I basically just a minute ago said you just got to get back right like you got to prove your pieces you got to get better and now you brought up two guys who yeah like okay if we go get Brandon Ingram he’s our second best player like I got it but like to me we had Brandon Ingram and we finished 11th in the west and at that point like what are we doing like I’m not a big believer in the tank and Detroit certainly knows why at the fifth pick right now and you know everyone else but on the other end like you go had Brandon Ingram I I don’t think Brandon Ingram moves a meter that changes who we are in a competitive nature I guess you know Brandon Ingram Lowry market and we’re we’re we’re long and we’re pretty good and we better put a lot of things there better be a lot of other pieces that emerge around that for that to work and maybe maybe tonte gets better in his second year and if you have Ingram at 610 and Lowry at 71 and you start Walker you get a little bit of a defensive presence you’re so long and yeah maybe maybe it comes together better than giving you credit for um on kma I’m actually been a big Kyle kma fan kind of as a always thought team should have traded for him Dallas tried didn’t may be very glad they didn’t they got different deal instead and it seems to worked out for them um but I I think you understand where I’m going like I the West is really really good and like if we go trade for Brandon Ingram are we better than Houston possibly I’d have to see how it works right but like you better be really certain you’re better than Houston because Houston didn’t make the top 10 last year and nobody in the top 10 at least in my book is coming out of the top 10 yet like I don’t think the Warriors are about to pull the plug San Antonio Victor’s going to be a year older Memphis is going to be good next year they’ve got a lot of players and hopefully they’ll be healthy like it’s hard so yeah it’s a little bit like where my Insanity plan like we’re just going to go get the wildest characters in the league and put Trey young and Carl Anthony towns together in just kind of this Total Insanity play like I don’t think I’m really serious about it but I like the discussion because it’s enough pieces in the pot that I do think it changes who you are as a franchise puts you in the top five offensively which does win you a bunch of games and probably put you to like fifth six seven in the west and then you’re at least doing something and but you only do one if you only do one of them then I it’s a step and you’ve got to take step I just don’t know the answer you’ve got to take steps to get to the top right you don’t just get to jump to the top floor but I get nervous when the step just leaves you kind of lingering there at 10 11 12 of whether or not you’re better off doing something else in that time period David we got a run we appreciate your time we’ll talk to you next week I don’t know if I made any sense there I hope I did yeah I’m good appreciate your time and you’re all right you keep learning you know okay there you go every day is an opportunity all right there it is learn away education is obviously the key coming up next we got new BYU basketball coach Kevin young excited to talk to him join J JJ and Alex Monday from 3 to 6 for the show up for the summer service fair at Thanksgiving Point learn more about it at show up Utah .org joining us now we’re looking forward to this this man has taken our community by storm he is Kevin young the new BYU men’s basketball coach coach thanks for coming on this morning yeah thanks for having me excited I was the guy who asked the first question of your press conference uh what was it last month when you uh were speaking up there and I asked you about your NBA dreams and you said that you didn’t have specifically dreams to be a head co coach I don’t know if you remember that question at the NBA level uh so I thought I’d follow it up with by asking when you got into coaching and as you progressed what was the goal I mean obviously being a head coach was was the goal I mean you know coming up in the NBA I mean that was what I was was was aiming for was trying to get to that point um but everything for me has always been just in line with my personal life as well and and the direction I want you know my my family’s life and to go and what I want that to look like and um you know that could have been in the NBA it was for a long time and and and very easily could have been as a head coach in terms of that that combination of family life and work life but when this opportunity came along we felt like uh you know it just a seamless fit relative to the career as well as the the family alignment and uh ultimately that’s that that became the goal in short order I need to point out right now I should have done it earlier but I’ll do it right now that NCA rules prohibit you from commenting on commitments so we can’t go in that direction and we know there’s been news out there you can only speak on players who have literally signed and are in your program so let’s put that out right now is that you’re unable to comment on guys who’ve given you oral commitments so uh I mean you know that but I want to make sure that our audience knows that if they’re wondering why I don’t ask about specific players but with that in mind you still have some opportunities to uh add to the roster whatever you choose what do you have in mind knowing that you cannot get specific so we’re certainly not asking you to break any rules here no no I mean it’s a great question I mean you know we when we came in you know we looked at the roster and and really like the shooting really like the experience and the IQ that team you know we’ve we’ve sort of targeted you know playmaking we’ve targeted a scorer you know we’ve targeted defense and athleticism um you know kind of across the board with all three of those things uh you know you’re looking kind of at the at a little bit more uh you know size as well so there’s certain things that that that are attractive to adding to this group and those areas are where we’ve spent the majority of our time trying to lock in on do you feel like you have enough size to go forward in the big 12 uh as currently constituted I do actually I I I’m not I love the guys that we have you know at the Five Spot um you know we’re looking you know at some different things at some combination of like a four five potentially um you know so feel good where we’re at there but but uh you know getting a four has been a priority for us coach Kevin Young new new B basketball coach joining us last and as we progressed into the fall we had heard about that the team went on an overseas trip and it really brought them together we have Steve Cleveland I I used to uh uh be a beat rider for the Salt Lake Tribune way back when I used to work for the Mesa Tribune too way back when and the cagr dispatch for that matter that’s where I got my start I went to ASU I’m an Arizona guy and uh so when we had coach Cleveland on he would refer back when the team started to have success this past season and it was somewhat of a surprise because they finished fifth in the West Coast Conference and then they did really well in the rugged Big 12 and he would talk about and others would talk about one of the things that he thought really benefited them was that overseas trip that they went to and played because it galvanized the team you’re not going to have that this year you’re new to them they’re new to you all that stuff how do you recreate that or simulate that to be able to bring the team with you and them together qu qu more quickly so that you’re prepared once the season starts I think a big part of it was getting uh you know D and Richie to to come back I mean they’ve been obviously a huge part of the of the team and of the group both on the court and off the court and Leadership qualities as well are really impressive out of those two and then you know getting F to come back and or stay rather um so I think having some of the main guys back in and of itself is is a major benefit for us as as it relates to this specific question you know as it relates to any specific events and things that we may or may not be doing I mean honestly I’m learning a new thing about the the rules and regulations every five minutes uh as I go through this so I’m I’m still carving my way out there but you know the the bit one of the huge differences from college to the NBA is the amount of practice time that you have leading up to the season I I laugh about when people talk about the NBA preseason or excuse me like training camp training camp basic training camps basically four days and you’re end of the season because you got preseason games once you start that it’s basically like the regular season so I’m I’m sitting here staring like six weeks in the face of you know buildup for the season for for an actual you know training camp on steroids right and so I’m looking at that and and looking at different creative things that we can do within Camp to drive a competitive environment to drive a galvanizing environment and so you know there’s some different things that we we’re looking to do there to get creative um so that that time one doesn’t become stale and then two it does allow us to sort of come together a little bit quicker coach Kevin young BYU basketball coach joining us you talk about retaining Hall and Saunders and that was really great news because we’ve watched them play for two years now and it’s fun to watch guys develop and see them get better as far as retaining them did you have a particular pitch that you used as far as I guess your recruiting them for the first time to the program in a sense they’re being re-recruited I mean that those two guys were were great because they were they were all about really how can you help me get better and that that’s where their main focus was and so you know I was able to kind of break the the film down for them and show specific things that I’ve kind of learned in the NBA you know showed examples of guys who I’ve worked with in the NBA um that that I think I can help you know translate to to their game and what we’re doing here at BYU that was a big part of it and then style of play you know how how am I going to use them on both sides of the floor um they were they were like sponges during those situations and you know I think that’s ultimately what uh what got got them to join back up with us what would you say and all the stuff that you you’ve learned through all the years Your call cannot be completed at well that was interesting we will re-for we will re-recruit Coach Kevin young at BYU man I’m enjoying the conversation with him you know you get somebody who’s brand new to the program and Coach Kevin young is back uh coach you’ve been doing this for a good while now you’re still a young guy but you got started and you’ve been doing this for a long time uh as you describe yourself when you make your presentations to Saunders and hillhall and all these other guys and you’ll be doing it multiple times a year for the next however many years you’re coaching in college in a BYU hopefully for years to come what would you say are your specific strengths I think I think just communication you know that’s kind of how I was able to carve out a role in the NBA just you know I try to be as prepared in studies as I can before I talk to any player or any any team setting uh and with that you know being direct and being um you know taking a lot of the the fluff out of it I think guys are drawn to the truth I think guys don’t want you to waste their time and I guys want to know how you can help get them better and so that’s kind of what I gravitated to uh in the NBA is my style it fits my personality and I just try to stay true true to kind of who I am and and uh that’s that’s kind of where I’ve been able to make make Headway with relationships and that’s that’s how I’ve approached this as well how much do you lean on using the NBA as a recruiting tool do you think you’ll use use it as a recruiting tool because I mean that makes kids sit up straight when you talk about getting them to the NBA obviously yeah I mean quite a bit just because that’s that’s who I am and that’s what I know right and so I think I’d be fooling myself and the and the kids if I didn’t talk about that because that’s what I know and and obviously you know it it goes well with what what their goals are all these young men are really good players and they have dreams and Ambitions to play in the NBA and at the next level and so I think showing them how they would play in in our system here at BYU that’s going to look very similar to an NBA system not not just in terms of style of play but just how we’re how we’re running our operation how we’re Staffing it how we’re attacking Player Development how we’re attacking weightlifting and strength training and how we’re attacking our mental performance and how we’re attacking our nutrition I mean this this is much bigger than just rolling the ball out right and so trying to take the blueprint that I’ve learned in the NBA both good and bad and and when I say bad I mean doing things that you know maybe I okay I won’t do it it that way and and really putting in putting it out there for them to say look this is this is how they operate in the NBA this is how we operate you’re going to be a beneficiary of that and it’s going to help you with your goals you talked about filling out that staff coach and you got some guys on board I understand you’re in the process of uh maybe getting closer to an announcement on three other guys and you had somebody down there at the father’s and Son’s Camp we’ll go about that if you’re not willing to name them that’s fine they’ll come out in time uh names are out there anyway people can go figure it out if they want to um but you look at historically so I moved up here in 93 and so I’ve been around for a good while right and first I covered Utah during their great runs for the Salt Lake Tribune to the final four and all that stuff and I saw how they assembled the staff and then I went on and and did Steve Cleveland and Coach Dave Rose and their staffs and a large portion of those staffs were people had a connection to BYU had a connection to the sponsoring faith it looks like you’re going maybe outside of that could you explain your philosophy in filling out your staff yeah I mean I wouldn’t say going outside of that holistically I mean there’s there’s a a handful of guys obviously myself included who are who are members of the sponsoring faith and and that’s important given you know obviously what this uh University stands for and and a lot of our players share that background so trying to strike a balance uh between that and then just you know good basketball coaches regardless of uh you know what faith they are and people that are good people right I’ve I’ve vetted uh these people quite a bit that’s something that I’m really big on you know I just I didn’t want to rush and hire any of the wrong people just to get people in the in uh in these offices to start doing the work I really wanted to take my time uh I have a lot a large network of of people that I can uh you know pull from just give my experience and so the guys that I’ve selected are guys that have really two two things once the first thing is just are they a good basketball coach and what are their experien as a basketball coach and then number two is what’s their what’s their recruiting uh expertise so every guy that I’ve brought on on staff as you said those will hopefully get announced soon every one of them has a unique recruiting um uh base and that’s that was really important um and then the last thing I would say there is the the reason I hired Burgess and dunon um as my first couple guys was to get guys in here that could help me navigate the college landscape and they’ve been a pluses as well as Doug Stewart um in terms of holding my hand with all the the NCAA and the grassroot stuff here in the early days has life settled down for you yet no no it hasn’t I mean we’re getting there you know we’re getting there feel like every day is getting we’re getting a lot more done and a lot more accomplished um but there’s still a lot of work to be done in the NBA you would obviously know this more than I would it it seems like you know every every organization has scouts all over the planet because the game is really expanded now and no matter where you’re from you have the opportunity to be seen right any European country South America you name it then we’ve seen guys come over the NBA and it’s no big surprise anymore when the foreign guy comes in and is not just a role player he actually ends up in a star and we’re seeing that obviously with Dallas and and Boston NBA Finals guys then they have team players who play those roles so you may have been exposed or you know people who been exposed to somebody who’s wherever they might be and where I’m going with this is I’m wondering how much of that exposure that you’ve had to kids who are in Euro leagues or coming up through the ranks overseas can actually help you get you maybe a little bit of a jump start on recruiting going forward no it’s big it’s big it’s you know coming up the way I did in a pro game you know I didn’t just jump into the NBA even on the pro side right I was in the G League even the D League I’m that old uh for for nine years right and so a lot of the guys that I jumped in with you know climbed the the ladder kind of simultaneously as I did like a lot of my friends are directors of scouting or assistant GMS or GMS or head coaches right um and so with the network of people I know in the NBA you know I get I’m getting hit up quite a bit from just different people or if I or if I find out about a player I I make one call and I can get any type of information that I want and that that’s just years of relationships years of like authentic friendships that I can draw upon and so you know that’s that’s really surprised me honestly in terms of how much that stuff would be helpful as i’ as I made the jump I thought it would be I’ve been surprised about the similarities in terms of just the network for me where I can draw on that’s one thing yeah that’s really been helpful yeah I thought so I thought that’s why I needed to ask that question because it seemed to me it would be obvious well coach before you let you go my wife’s a phoenix native I grew up there uh how appreciative are you going to be that the days coming forward of 115 are gone uh I’m definitely looking forward to that even just driving in this morning man it’s just such a beautiful this time of year in Utah is so amazing with the Sun hitting the mountains and it’s just uh like you said it’s not sweltering High outside and uh um you know definitely looking forward to that well thanks for your time coach we know you’re very much busy and we appreciate it and we look forward to watching you progress along your first season at BYU this season all right man thanks for having me I appreciate it okay that is Kevin young the new BYU men’s basketball coach BYU fans are you fired up yeah well you should be we’ll elaborate that on that next coming up at the top of the hour we’re talking to another Phoenix guy it’s all Phoenix radio all the time Pablo marreon will join us the head coach of the RSL Team we’re back in Action tomorrow night stay with us 975 the KSL Sport Zone accessing this is H sson and Scotty G Kurt Heen NBC Sports probasketballtalk.com why is it really cool to make fun of Rudy goar right now yeah I don’t know you know certainly there was the co stuff there’s moments where you kind of like cringe but it’s also like I will tell you my personal experience just interviewing him a couple of times honestly he’s a great interview like he gives you good answers he’s honest he’s not somebody who’s come through the pr machine and just kind of gives you the pat answers like he gives you honest good answers and most media members I know are pretty fond of him for whatever reason he just rubs other players the wrong way maybe they feel like he doesn’t deserve the four defensive players of the year but I think he’s the best rim protector of a generation I think he does hon Scotty weekdays from noon to 3 on 975 the KSL Sports up don’t miss your chance to win big every week on The Zone listen every week this week on win ticket Wednesday tickets to see the Salt Lake Bees in action at Smith’s Ballpark listen to The Zone all day Wednesday for your chance to win and now is the time for sure to get out to the ballpark go every year that’s a great way a phenomenal way to spend the evening for sure looking at the mountains watching some baseball and enjoying time together really that’s what it is about I don’t want to wax too philosophical here because I’m supposed to be the screw up who spits as as DJ says I do the spitwads in the back of the bus but you want to get together with friends and family and sit at the Ballpark yeah that’s a great way to spend a summer evening summer weather is awesome here we just spoke to Kevin Young new BYU basketball coach and he’s looking forward to not having to be broiling it’s going to be hot but the evenings are just gorgeous here and I just tweeted I’m not a big Tweeter but I just put one out I believe BYU basketball is in a good spot with Kevin young as its new coach Yak you remembered Ang’s layup oh yeah to beat Notre Dame when I was on the great beyond yeah predates me by a few years I was alive it doesn’t predate me by a lot but it does I didn’t see the play but there’s two plays I feel like I was right there on the side sideline two plays in BYU history Danny anges laying to lead him to the elite eight and uh morel’s tackle in Hawaii and the dive over the line yes those have been played heavily right right and you I I feel like I was right there covering those games and I wasn’t uh I was not uh working at that time at least in the media but uh I look at Kevin young and I think man I think the program’s in good hands he’s a guy that you can tell he’s just he’s here to do what he’s always wanted to do and be a head coach and he wants to do a good job because he he understands that these are I know there’s more head coaching jobs in the in the college basketball world there’s 300 and whatever teams there are but we’re talking of the kind of the top tier PK the Big 12 it’s no joke and he’s he’s obviously motivated to go out and do what he’s doing and it was cool to hear him talk about the fact if he ever needs to get information on a player or anything he makes said I W I make one phone call to the right person I get everything I need Absol stinking lutely yeah I think that’s important and because you think about the NBA me they’re scouting all over the world and I don’t know the colleges can do that well and that’s going back to we had Travis Hansen on the show earlier this week and talking about the jagor den denim that’s how he said Jer denim yeah the kid from Russia uh it was cool to hear Travis talk about the fact that Travis knew this kid because obviously they both played for Real Madrid he had that connection uh the kid’s parents knew Travis and they bring Travis into that meeting with Kevin young like you don’t get to see the inside details like Travis did very often but it was intriguing to hear how Kevin is going about kind of differentiating himself from other coaches I would agree with that and I can see why the combination of the University president what’s his last name reys and athletic director uh Tom hommo and Associate whatever his title might be he’s Brian San dieago don’t forget Keith V kink in this as well the advancement vice president and they uh went down to Phoenix uh interviewed him I guess maybe or presented the job to him at that point and that’s what I had heard and I can see why they were giddy that they were able to get this guy in because it looked like a few things had to happen in order to lose Mark Pope right they had to have guys turn down the job because he wasn’t going to be first on the list and that’s exactly what happened we know the Baylor guy Drew flew in and he felt God told him to stay at uh Baylor I don’t make light of that if that’s what he thinks good for him and uh who else was it uh Alabama’s guy well I say Nate oats was in the mix as well and he reaffirmed his commitment really quick was there somebody else there were other names that remember uh things had to happen and then Mark Pope was there and he was going to take that job as he should it’s a dream job for him he’s got the connection and it’s Kentucky let’s not lose sight of the fact that it’s Kentucky and so it looked like wow man this is a blow to the program but to get Kevin young in there with his NBA connections and just his young enthusiasm and look what he already did man he got Hall and saers to come back and fous to stay and you know he’s got some guys coming in and you talked about the number one recruit is going to be on campus uh next week early next week to check it out as he goes and plays in the new Academy down in Hurricane Utah that’s exciting times you got to win but I think for right now it looks like what they did is going to work and we’ll see how it plays out once we get to that situation when the season starts yeah and I the training camp in the NBA is only three or four days and they start preseason and it’ll have weeks and they’ll need to get that stuff together okay coming up next we are going to stay with the Phoenix idea we got Pablo Mone Real Salt Lake head coach joining us stay with us 975 the KSL Sport Zone join the zone tomorrow June 1st for the dino day at all Sinclair stations fuel up and save up to 30 cents per gallon on top tier premium fuel with Dino pay plus free Dino swag on June 1st and of course that is tomorrow we’re on the last day of May joining us now on this last day of May is my guy Real Salt Lake head coach Pablo marono Mone good morning coach how are you good morning PK doing well bud now we got DJ he’s not here today I don’t know if he’s sick or what but all I know is he just does not have the Phoenix Thunderbird Chief High toughness if you can look 115 in the eye and not even sweat you are tough that’s I tell you what if nothing else man we’ve endured a lot just living in that place going through the Summers man you’re absolutely right it does something to the to the mental fortitude for sure so your your club man is showing extreme mental fortitude uh I got to admit right I’m watching the game the other night and you know I got to get up way early to do this morning show and when I saw Julio get hit in the face and he’s down I’m thinking oh crap man I’m just GNA have to stay up and let’s go let’s drag him off the field let’s go I got to get to bed right and so we see Rus neck put the go in there and I’m thinking once it got to 90 I thought I got to go to bed man I’m tired and I got to get up in the morning and so I did not see the last seconder by Gomez I got to be the first admit but it’s the first thing I did when I woke up in the morning the great thing about it now is that man if you miss anything within seconds it’s right on your fingertips so I was able to see that um and I thought you know as I’m watching it and thinking this is in the minute in the moment I should say it’s the game time goal you’re going to get the point get out of Seattle and all that stuff but I’m thinking the fact that it happened stems from a lot of other stuff that led to that point can you speak to that and I read your comments nor normally I listen uh to the post game on Saturday nights virtually every time but I didn’t this night cuz I was in bed so I read your comments it it’s about the confidence so being able to do it uhhuh yeah no I I I think again um you know one of the things that you know we pride ourselves on is is being a team that has you know a strong mental you know has a strong mindset and and and and you know I think you can use it in all aspects of life is that you know life is you know it’s there’s 90% of what happens to you but but or sorry 5% of what happens to you and 95% of how you react to it and and so again unfortunately these few games we found ourselves on the wrong side of the score line and it’s really easy to put your head down when things aren’t going your way um but but I think that you know going from the Colorado game here at home where we’re down two- Z and we end up winning 5-3 you know we’re down three- Z in Dallas on you know earlier in the week um and and then we end up tying at 33 um that there’s you know there’s this belief within the group that says regardless of what’s Happening um we’re going to stay in it and we’ve seen this happen in the recent past so we’re going to to keep our heads in there and not quit and and and again there’s there’s a lot of Fortune that goes in that but but again I think Fortune always favors the brave and brave in the mindset Brave in the ability to get forward Brave in the Never Say Die um and and so I think that part is is a fantastic you know it’s it’s it’s it’s it’s our DNA as a group and it’s it’s really great to see now on the other side of that is you know last three games we’ve been behind it and there’s been some you know some weird decisions that that have led to those goals and so going into this game it’s really coupling the Tactical piece and making sure that we do everything to not shoot ourselves in the foot uh given up at a goal but now we have this mental fortitude and see how we can now manage a lead with this mindset and make sure we finish the game off so that’s what I’ll be interested in in in looking for tomorrow how much of the uh substitutions and just the patterns the playing patterns that you did was determined by uh I don’t want to say poor play but what’s going on in the field versus scheduling yeah you know I think it all had to do with scheduling and just making sure you know Chicho’s played a ton of minutes um you know the guys up front Andreas and so you know the the Dallas game we we made Subs at like the 60th minute this game making subs at the 60th minute and so I I think for me PK uh if you play over 60 Minutes your recovery is a lot like playing a full game and you know anything below that so 45 35 now it becomes a really hard training session midweek and so for for for a lot of the guys guys like’ been playing a lot of Ms Alex Brody um Chicho uh Crooks uh these guys that have been getting a lot of reps it was really important for you know because our next gamees here at home and right and and I think that’s another thing that I’m really proud of is is that we’re able to mix the group up and make five or six changes to the lineup go to a very difficult place to play in Seattle playing off on Turf and with rain and still come away with good result and the guys that stepped in there you know had really good performances as well so I think it’s it’s just a great it feels great as a team at the moment I think it was uh was it uh what game was it it was either Colorado or Dallas I can’t remember in the post game you were talking about how Pablo masteron joining us and your your response was you know I I I moved here I got family elsewhere but I got this passion for what we’re doing and you know your your big thing I think is as from my perspective and listening to you talk is trying to instill belief into the player and then as the collective and you’ve got to have that and I was I was relating it to my own situation right so I graduate from ASU and my first newspaper job is at cigan and then I uh I move over to the Mesa Tribune right and then I go over to California for a little bit and uh I can remember when I was a kid uh they started Sports Talk Radio in Phoenix and it was on 55 Koy the AM station and it ran from Midnight from 10 p.m. to midnight there were no all sports stations it wasn’t new yet but I thought man SP talking sports that would just be I wanted to play third base for the Dodgers I played third base for Thunderbird but I sucked and I certainly was not a uh a major league player by any stretch but I thought yeah I I got to be in sports somehow well at the time it was to be a sports writer right and then it evolved and I heard sports radio I thought I could really do it and then I move up to Salt Lake and I start working my way in it and then in 2002 the opportunity presents uh for me to do a sports show with a sports nerd by the name of David James and uh I call my father right and he’s living in Phoenix and uh I tell him I’m super excited Dad I’m gonna get my own radio show I’m still working for the Salt Lake Tribune at the time and he says to me son he says I’m happy for you but man I don’t know about this radio stuff all I know is the newspapers have been on my doorstep every year of my life so you better be careful but I thought you know it was a risk right and if I but I believed I can do it and I wanted to take that risk because I really really wanted to do it and here we are frakin 22 years later and it’s worked right and I believed in my myself and I was listening to you talk I thought and I forget which game it was in the post game but I thought that was the essence of what you’re trying to say with this passion and belief and if you can get to that point you got something going on yeah no you’re spot on that’s a great story and I think and and that’s why there’s so many parallels with Sport and life and and and and that’s why I love it and and you know one of the things I I try to do as you know a former player that started out in the the club you know club soccer in in Phoenix Arizona and then working my way through is that all the struggles are still the same all the struggles are no different than they were back then and it’s really helping these guys to understand like the the reason I wasn’t the greatest player I wasn’t the most technical I wasn’t but I had this belief in myself that was greater than my actual production and I always aimed to get better and so that’s why we talk about internally one day better we just want to get one day better but we’re always looking to seek a better self and I think when you start having these these Visions you know and as a collective a vision of of winning an MLS cup of winning the supporter shield and you you you train to that level every day and those are the expectations internally then you get to Saturday and it’s almost like you know it’s not always going to go great but then the belief is what’s kept us in these last couple games right and and and because we’re we’re thinking we’re supporter Shield material and so we’re down three this isn’t aligned therefore I am going to commit to making sure that the vision I have for myself as an individual and the vision that we have for ourselves as a collective is aligned with being a top team in this league and it just kind of pushes you on as opposed to St you know setting a low bar and then hitting it every day and then not being a team that’s able to fight back in difficult moments or achieve greatness and so those are things that we talk internally every day and and and again I think I I’ve just kind of relaying my own life story where you know if I was just as average as every other guy out there but what separated me I think from most was my ability to think differently and and and really push myself to to be the best I can become and so um it’s it’s such a great you know in the moment and the way we started off the season and and seeing guys like Andreas and Luna and AA anelli and and these guys that you know last year were were good players for us but they weren’t great um and this year they’re playing great and it just it’s and and that’s why you know I coach is is to really instill some of these to help these guys and create an environment for these guys to achieve greatness and and and it’s an amazing moment and I couldn’t be happier for the guys the team the staff the club so those guys you just mentioned Pablo uh has the proverbial light come on for them I I I think so because again I think the interesting thing and I and i’ I’ve kind of realized this in life and and I don’t know if I read it somewhere or it just came up but I believe that advice right because you’re a coach and you give advice and you Mentor but I believe advice means nothing until the person that you’re speaking to has lived those words right yeah I think you have to live the emotion of the words being spoken in order for them to to to make sense and that’s why often times you give advice to somebody or you you you mention something and they come back a couple years later they’re like you were so right you were so right it’s only because they lived it and so I think you know the things that we talked about last year is no different than we talked about this year but now Luna AA Andreas these guys are living it OA they’re living it and so it’s in it’s almost happening in real time and I think that’s that’s the that you know that’s the Special Sauce that’s the you know that’s the X Factor right well you talk about from last year to this year and I mean you still got a good way to go here uh but one of the differences is the to this race to this point anyway is the more success at home than what you had at this point last year I don’t have the numbers in front of me but I’m thinking you have had more success and it’s in order to be the Su the success that you want to be you simply have to have that what are some of the differences um it’s it’s it’s it’s hard to put a finger on you know I think last year I think it’s like everything else it’s a bit like momentum when when things aren’t going good you’re almost trying too hard to be great great at home um and I think this year there’s there’s there’s like this uh quiet confidence within the group every home game or last year I felt it was anxious confidence um so going out guys we got to do it we’re at home we got to do it for the for our fans you know we got to do it for ourselves we got and this year it’s like guys let’s go out there and play our football and so it’s saying the same thing but it’s with a different type of tone a different type of energy and and so it’s it’s really hard to put a finger on but I think you know I think having some tough games early on the season you know we went to Miami went to St Louis at home and and then we got our first you know first home game win and I think that really you know got us off on the right foot and then you know I think it’s really been the mindset of the group and um and then again I go back to that Colorado game where we’re down you know two- Z early and the you know after the first goal you hear an eruption from the fans the second goal the place gets even louder um and then they concede and the fans just stayed behind it so it’s a it’s a real symbiotic relationship with the fans and the players and uh the the feeling that you get when you’re in the stadium this year is just different how much did that I want to say loss even though it was a draw in LA but it felt like a loss because of the circumstances how much did that spur you guys on because now what was seem like a a serious blow in the moment I think you’ve made up for it and overcome it and you’ve been the guy who’s been administering the Blow instead of taking it and I’m wondering if that was any form of a catalyst in terms of nothing is ever for sure and never give up all those types of things yeah no I think that’s that’s interesting you know after that game you know the LA guys were celebrating um at home you know drawing coming but they came back from two Z so again it was a really gutsy performance from them to kind of dig in and obviously Us in the other locker room were completely upset that we dropped you know we dropped two points uh in in in that game um but but it was something that we talked about as a collective you know guys in the locker room were were were livid and uh the great thing was they you know they were talking amongst each other and how upset they were you know what what were you thinking here what you know and so it was like they were owning it and so I I think that’s that’s when things really start to happen within teams um you know when when the players lead and they feel the accountability and they take ownership um and that’s what we’ve had since that game and really for the whole season but it really started after that game where you know it was it was a call to arms like we we can’t let this happen again and they were in there discussing about you know not the Tactical pieces as much as the the staying focused for 90 plus minutes and that actually parlayed in the last couple games where you know we’ve we’ve snuck one out an injury time um which is a testament to the to the mentality of this group so you got the game tomorrow against Austin and then your next game would be on the 15th so you got a little uh respit there how will that determine the lineup yeah so you know I think you know the lineup will be kind of more based upon you know the way that we went out these last two games and just again checking in today to make sure everyone’s healthy um but you know I think going into that uh Montreal game we’ll give the guys four or five days off allow him to kind of get away from the game then we’ll have a a typical leadup a five-day leadup to our to our game in Montreal and uh you know I think it’s a it’s a good opportunity to to to see you know to we we’ll have an assessment of our first part of the Season as a staff and kind of go through some things um but again I think it’s it’s really important for other players to have to to step up now um because again I think once you get going in a certain fashion teams will scheme you differently prepare differently for you or you know because they know what you to expect but I think the Honus is on us though you know guys like Fidel um you know guys like OA who have been doing well um and and to make the roster a bit more competitive from that from that perspective but like I always say the owness is on the individual to really make it a difficult you know decision for the coaching staff and so I think that that break will be really important for those type of moments well probo appreciate your time as always go get three tomorrow thanks PK appreciate it all right that’s Pablo Mason he is the Real Salt Lake head coach and they’ve been on fire things are working for them right now I went to bed thinking they got a loss and I woke up and they stole a point I guess you could say as far as that goes they let one they let a couple points slip away a few weeks back but then man last three games have been highly highly improbable being down multiple goals against Colorado being down three against Dallas wasn’t it and then what was that what what did they determine that goal came in and as far as the minute Mark in Seattle was like two seconds to go it was the 99th minute it’s the latest equalizer in club history yeah and how much longer I seven they they it was they call the quote at the death that’s what the term they use in soccer it was pretty much that yeah they they kicked it off right after that and the whistle was blown almost immediately after yeah that was I was surprised when I woke up pleasantly surprised they’re back in Action tomorrow at America first field great night to be out watching some soccer and we wish them well and Pablo Maron I don’t know if you know this but he and I went to the same High School how about that really I think that bugs DJ which is fun from that perspective yeah we’re Boys Pablo Pablo and I are boys and I wish them nothing but the best of success stay with us we’ll get you caught up on what you may have missed right here on 975 the KSL Sports Z ladies and gentlemen may I present this is JJ and Alex eigor Daman BYU fans you’re going to be like what this kid’s going to play for us next year yes he is he is a projected 2025 NBA draft lottery pick when is the last time probably Shawn Bradley where the BYU Cougars landed a commit from somebody who was that good who was going to be an NBA lottery pick we don’t know what the future holds how long he’s going to be at BYU is he one and done I mean I’m sure BYU fans will take it right his BYU ever had a one and done like a true one and done did you hear what I just said BYU fans you’re getting a potential one and done that’s amazing catch JJ and Alex afternoons from 3: to 6 presented by G2G bars on 975 the KSL Sports Zone great show this morning thank you to Jacob F hatch F huh yeah okay fantastic oh thank you think another ad to but okay we’ll take that for setting up well lot comes on every week brought to you by the Murdock group and Kevin young we’ve been after him for a few weeks now and we got him Kevin Young’s more like a month like that request has been pending for a while so I’m glad it finally worked out yes by the way big shout out I’m going to say right now Tyson J their Sid for basketball down there Big Ups to him for working that out for us absolutely for sure appreciate Tyson Kevin young joining us and then Pablo marriana the Real Salt Lake head coach so we’ve had three real good interviews and yach tell them where you can hear those yeah so they’re available wherever you get your podcast so essentially if you have an app that has a native podcast app just search out djm PK on that or we are now on YouTube uh you can go to YouTube search out the KSL Sports Zone djm PK is is under that umbrella there just and then frankly just Google DJ and PK and whatever person’s name you want to hear from Kevin young Pablo masteran David lock and you will see copious amounts of links to those podcasts cool or KL sports.com in general we’ll start with lock what we talked about obviously the NBA Finals Boston is favored but that’s not rule out Dallas man they’ve been doing it so far they looked very impressive against Minnesota which knocked off The Defenders the defending champs in Denver right good for them they had a nice season fell a littleit bit short Dallas beat them and you got Irving and donic playing the way they are they they’ll give you a chance and do you need do you need a multiple 25o game roster yeah I think you do I think you need at least two players the easier way to say it two players they’re hitting close to 25 a game game and we were talking about that and lock says you know Danny Ray our guy a says that they’re going big game hunting and I think they can get marinan to be a 25 game I don’t think there’s any question on that especially if that was the goal if that was exclusively the goal there’s no doubt he could do it but do it in the framework of an offense that is winning ball games I still think he can do it and with that in mind where do you go from there and he mentioned a couple names that we’ve heard on the Block Trey young and Carl Anthony towns not sure that they would make you a title Contender unto themselves and then of course what do you have to give up do the Jazz have enough to give up to be able to accomplish those deals you know what maybe Atlanta would look for a little more draft Capital but obviously they’re not going to take Collins back so what exactly would you be giving up I certainly I would think it would be George in that situation uh then we’ll get going on that as we’re now tomorrow when we come back on Monday man it’ll be June June is genba draft month and then the free agency and the trade start going and if you’re going to go big game hunting we’re about 3 four weeks away from that coming to pass putting on your orange and your camouflage hat and getting your rifles and Away you go you’ve done hunting yuck very minimal I do have siblings SL in-law laws who are far more into it we’re talking like go out as you mentioned dress in orange camo searching for deer hiking across the the mountains to find this it’s not really my thing I’m I’m I’m the quote unquote stick and ball Sports guy I will be watching football while they’re out on the mountain trying to get deer yeah yeah there you go yeah I can I’ve never ever come close to even remotely doing any of that I had some guys when I was going to na lived across the hall from me in the dorm and they were brothers and they would get up at like 3:00 4 in the morning and go set these traps and stuff out in northern Arizona out in the wilderness and then go and that just doesn’t seem like a good time it’s a if you’re into it I got no problem with it because like I said I’ve got family that’s into it my preference it’s just not my thing i’ I’d rather be at home or at a stadium watching the game I’m way too soft there’s just no way I could C kill another living being there is that element to well just the idea of wait I’m going to cause your life to cease and I I’m not passing any judgment on it and I know about all the stuff but I just for me there’s just no way I could do that so hopefully the Jazz do go big game hunting and get some stuff done we’ll see how that plays out and then we had Kevin young talk to him about the roster he feels like they’ve got enough height I would have thought maybe they would say h we might might little be looking to add somebody well I think they’re looking to add to somebody for sure uh but feeling like they’ve got enough height okay we’ll see obviously they got the Utah transfer keba fous uh who else who else who they well the new guy well and if you 69 but he seems like he’s a perimeter guy jagar denim is Travis Hansen helped us pronounce pronounce earlier he’s 69 but he is very much a wing player right like he’s he’s more in the mold if you want to compare somebody from BYU last year Noah Waterman yeah so I don’t know that he’s going to for for his position out in the perimeter he can get you some boards he’s got lead size yes you’re going to be relying right now it looks like right now it’s it’s going to be fous and CBA in the mid toold who are going to have to really hold things down I’ve still got some thought in me PK and I we heard Travis Hansen allude to it they want to find their Derek Lively a 7 foot Rim Runner and that’s going to probably take some time I think they need that because especially if somebody uh tweaks an ankle we already had what did F have a hammy this year was that well here’s the thing hammy for fous KNE for Lei Khalifa and then also TK ALK had a broken thumb all year so they never and Mark Pope said it all the time when he was still in Provo I he did not go through a practice the entirety of last season with all three of those guys on the court at the same time right so I would think they would need another body but he’s says he feels comfortable with what he’s got and he certainly knows more than I do and then the staff they got three guys the names are out there Yak gave us one name Tim Fanning who is he Yeah Tim Fanning’s got extensive experience overseas and also in the G League the other names to keep an eye on will Voit who is currently with the Austin Tauros in the G League at Le their head coach and then the third name is John linahan now it’s not Johnny linahan the former punter for BYU he’s an assistant currently well most recently at St Josephs those are the names I would keep an eye on if you’re a BYU basketball fan hint hint gotcha gotcha okay so we got that going on there uh and he he Kevin said that they would be announcing it soon so that’s cool and they’ll have their staff I asked him if life has settled down to some fo uh degree of normaly normaly and he said no no no no he’s so he’s still running around there getting set up he’s got some time get it set up and get prepared for the season but I got to say you know he hasn’t coached a game so he hasn’t won a game or hasn’t lost a game but right now I gotta give it uh High grades on this guy this what is he 42 43 years old coaching the team it looks like under the circumstances that they had they were up against it they got themselves a winner I’m real fired up to see what he can do Adam came at me on Twitter uh will be posted later on the app yep everything is available there you can go to the KSL Sport Zone plus any other available replay we’ve got it across the board as Yak just said and then we talk to Pablo mastrion RSL continues to find ways to gain Points each week what are they up to 12 13 I keep forgetting the unbeaten streak yeah to 12 matches currently which is tied for the second longest in franchise history and what’s the franchise history franchise history is 14 straight 14 so they got two games to go they got the fcer from Austin yes the fcer from Austin and then and then they’re off for a couple weeks and then they go to Montreal the club defo Montreal so they got four MLS games this month the first and the fourth are at home the second and third are away so it’s tomorrow June 1st and then the 22nd I think it is if you want to get out there and that’s that’s a nice way to spend an evening too our stadiums here in the summer are all very much beautiful they’re fun to look at um college football we talked a little bit of course we talked a little bit about college football now they came out with this settlement that said if you red shirted for transfers in 1819 you have the opportunity to get that year back and immediately people saying is Cam Rising is he going to be a grad assistant and coaching his own kid at Utah the way it goes or or be playing uh because he’s going to quarterback this year his seventh year in college well apparently no does not get get that year back yeah there were some stipulations like subheadings underneath that uh agreement that that negate his potential to get that year back now Michelle Bodkin by the way give her a shout out she did the leg work on uh clarifying this for KSL sports.com you read it there she did say though in that story that there is this roundabout nature of his red shirt year combined with the injury he suffered last year if he really wanted to try and appeal for an eighth year there is a road map for that but under this uh settlement essentially between the doj and these States along with the NCAA he will not be eligible for that eighth year that would be unbelievable he talked about three years ago having it be it can you can you can you imagine if he were 27 and still playing college football yeah if that were the case I don’t ever want to hear about BYU being old oh that here’s the thing we had Barry traml on and Barry talked about the fact that there’s going to be three seventh year quarterbacks this year starting in the Big 12 Conference the whole BYU they’re old and they’re mature yeah that that scenario that talking point Trope whatever you want to call it it can be buried now it should be yeah for sure I mean these guys are getting up there it’s getting a little silly I think that we can get rid of it after this year and get back to what we knew as far as that goes and then occasionally maybe somebody got the sixth year uh and but they’ve revamped the rules all over the place you know we have the kid at Miami he’s going for a ninth year this year right who’s that he’s a tight end I foret what his name is he had three successive seasoning injuries when he was at Oregon uh he has since transferred to play for the Hurricanes down there in Miami and he successfully has got n his ninth season upcoming this fall so I’m with you I think we’re finally getting to the end of the so-called covid era of the situation here but my other question about this PK is just this is philosophically moving forward we’re getting challenges to the ncaa’s authority on everything what’s stop some kid one day from saying I want to keep playing college football and just challenge the rules that stipulate he has to graduate or he’s ineligible I guess I would say out of Eligibility yeah I think that would be extreme I don’t think it would get to that point become a joke yeah it would there’s no doubt it would but I’m just with everything else how ites we’ve become with this I mean what does rising even do for classes uh nothing why do they make him do it underwater basket weaving and I mean ballroom dance whatever degree he needed he should have got that years ago yeah stretching we had Keaton bills and he had earned his degree three years ago I mean that if that’s the point then yeah move along and he did move along and now he’s with Buffalo and good luck to him trying to make that team he had eligibility left and uh several guys I think several guys who had eligibility left and um they all got uh drafted I think Devon VY had eligibility left he got drafted obviously uh vaky had eligibility he got drafted and that’s the way it should be uh prepare yourself if you’re preparing yourself for professional go ahead and do that and if you’re not good enough then get your degree and move on so excited for when college football season starts for sure all right stay with us coming up next we wrap up the show get you ready for Ben and Jake right here at 975 the KSL Sports Zone and it’s all over almost here don’t go nowhere putting a bow on it as the oxer says getting some response from the Kevin young interview Adam just listening to coach young with PK kenahan at the KSL Sports Zone no wonder he’s recruiting so well and has hired great assistance just an incredible coach for BYU men’s basketball a lot of excitement going around on Kevin young and I get it I understand why you would think that we shall see we shall see about all that that’s a great thing about it man have an opportunity to see how good they’re going to be and we had Mitch Harper on earlier in the week he’s our BYU Insider for KSL Sports KSL sports.com and he was talking about that you know last year was our first full-time exposure to the Big 12 and he said that it was a down year they weren’t quite as good certainly Kansas had all sorts of injury issues they were like Utah football and they were they were barely standing up they were staggering to the finish line and it didn’t work out for them uh obviously and so he thinks that the conference will be better will re regroup and be better which then means BYU is going to have to be better and where they go 10 and eight in conference last year can they find a way to be better that’s some huge wins uh still where they finish fifth place finish him fifth tied with Kansas funny enough yeah yeah yeah yeah well can you recreate that or be better because it’s probably something that you’re going to have to be better at you’re going to have to be better than you were last year and if the conference is going to well obviously you think the conference is going to be better you’re bringing in uh two NCA tournament teams right off the bat in Colorado and Arizona right now uh Colorado’s going to lose some guys I mean they’re Colorado’s probably going to have three draft choices which I said all along yeah Colorado is going to have a lot of guys drafted this year they may force them into a rebuild next year but that Arizona always reloads I was going to say that’s Arizona doesn’t rebuild they reload yeah it’s like oh hey who are we going to get now and they got uh yeah they got Caleb love coming back took his name out of the draft wasn’t he player of the year yeah and then him leaving causes Jason Jose S oh sorry excuse me returning but then all of a sudden when he returns you have josean Sean decommit from Arizona to go to ASU and he’s a five-star Talent like there is just talent coming out of out of Arizona every single year so keep an eye on it so they’ll be better so the UTS are going to have to be better and the Cougars are going to have to be better uh I’d say man I’ve had no problem getting into Big 12 basketball compared to pack 12 basketball it’s gonna not that it’s going to take me a little bit because that’s not the point I’ll get into Big 12 Football when it immediately starts because of no other reason that’s the job and that’s a major reason but I still I’m going to lament the loss of big of Pack 12 football but I’m not lamenting the loss of Pack 12 basketball as much because this is better and your teams are going to have to be better in order to compete we’ll have plenty of time to talk about that for sure and then I asked on Facebook man should cam Rising come back for an eighth year and Josh says what Yak would say was saying there won’t be eligibility for much longer you’ll be able to play if a college team signs you you might see a 35-year-old playing the only competition is NFL at what point does the scholarship end hopefully before his eighth year well here’s the thing we have seen 30y olds playing in college football now I mean that’s unusual they MLB draft picks who have obviously Chris WN Chris winky been there’s one that just recently just walked on with Arkansas who he actually played for the Salt Lake Bees for a while so there’s some of those stories but yeah you’re right the the situation is going to be eventually it feels like more of a professional model well Dan says it’s the pros now so why not oh another Dan defined play because he hasn’t done that for a year and a half okay there we go now we’re getting into it okay but half of that time you don’t play I was gonna say you one season here the thing we spent nine months of the year waiting for a three-month season roughly oh man yeah that’s so true it goes by so fast and I know it starts in August and it doesn’t end until January but think about it the the bulk of the season is three months long yeah September October November it’s the shortest regular season of any major sport that we once a week for 12 weeks correct yeah and then it’s done right yeah yeah and then now if you’re in the playoff great most of these bowl games nobody gives a crap yeah but it’s a bowl game that’s once you one more game that’s sometime in the following month you got players leaving coaches leaving opting out yeah yeah so the bulk of the season in which we all get excited about is those very three months and then really too how you schedule your non-conference it might even only be two months in one week if you’re playing a bunch of cream puffs that first part of the month month in September then it doesn’t hold a whole lot of interest there H take the nil money more than help ever to make in the N NFL at his age I’m not sure what he’s getting at I think what he means is take the guaranteed money via nil and because the guaranteed money in the NFL is not for certain I think it’s the gist of well yeah and I think that for cam Rising there is no guarantee of NFL well and that’s I think espe now he’s going to be he would be 26 years old and guess what NFL teams they scrutinize injuries and they’re going to want to check that both knees out I think it was and they’re going to make sure that they’re going to do their homework on him and yeah he’s an older Prospect remember BYU has been dinged for years for having older prospects cam Rising is right in the same age range as most of those by you guys seen get dinged yeah I like to think of myself as an older Prospect you are PK you are you can still play third base for the Thunderbird Chiefs weekly you know I’m might have to have a cut off to get to throw over to first base now all right well hey thanks for joining us jam-pack show go listen to the interviews lock Kevin young masteron they’re all available on our website KL sports.com wherever you get your podcast a lot of
