Shocking Giddey stat

He has a defensive rating of 111.7. That is better than Giannis, DWhite, Sabonis, and JBrown.

Is he underrated? I understand he choked in the Mavs series, but I have never seen someone get so much hate for playing bad in a series. It's almost like everybody forgot what he did in the 1st round and RS, and some people were acting like he was the first person ever to struggle in a series. He's only 21. It happens. It's strange to see the level of vitriol he received.

Individual defensive rating is a worthless stat

  2. thanks for proving why defensive stats are worthless

Put me on the worst player on the other team surrounded by 3 great defensive players on the perimeter with Chet guarding the rim behind me and I’ll… well I’d still have terrible stats. But my stats would be way better than I actually am.

Have you watched Giddy play defense before? These ratings are a reflection of him being asked to do the very least on defense while our actually great defenders are drawing all the tough match ups.

As far as this sub is concerned, there is nothing about Giddy that is underrated.

You say you watched most regular season games and the playoffs. I watched all 92 games this season and can confidently tell you that Giddey only looks this good because of the incredible defensive players around him. 1v1 vs most players in the league he’s cooked.

Basketball Reference even acknowledges the flaws with individual defensive rating statistics and says the following:

“Out of necessity (owing to a lack of defensive data in the basic boxscore), individual Defensive Ratings are heavily influenced by the team’s defensive efficiency. They assume that all teammates are equally good (per minute) at forcing non-steal turnovers and non-block misses, as well as assuming that all teammates face the same number of total possessions per minute.”

Giddey fans all do the same thing. Present data out of context, ask leading questions, focus on the reaction to Giddey’s play, instead of just focusing on Giddey’s play
