College & NBA are VERY different! – Bob Myers speaks on Lakers targeting Dan Hurley | NBA Countdown

he’s Stephen A Smith he’s Bob Meers Michael wilbon joining us here in Boston is Josh Hart so let’s dive into this Lakers coaching search a little bit here Bob you have been a part of these conversations in your time with the Golden State Warriors when you’re looking to find a head coach for a group that not only has veterans that are looking to win another title but also has this young core that they’re trying to develop how do you weigh who the best candidate is it’s really hard Malik I mean it’s hard to find players it but it’s almost harder to find the right coach but just like a business there’s a right Co for the right time but College in the NBA is very different in in the NBA the coaches drive the car but they don’t build the car and in the college they get to do both this guy played for J right he he recruited him and he taught him how to play coach Hurley goes to the Lakers he’s not getting to decide necessarily who’s on his team so that’s a big shift for college coaches so can he coach yeah he can coach he’s a great Coach Josh will tell you over here coaching’s a big part of winning but managing Talent is another part of winning what kind of partnership do you have with ownership with manag so more than any other sport an NBA player and Josh is you you know him or you’re maybe one of them have more power than any players in any other league so you can’t treat them the same way you would at college players so part of it is and they’ve happened to have a player on their team that may be the most powerful athlete in any sport so those are all the things you think about but can he coach absolutely the guy can coach if the Lakers do it ask another quick question if we could willan just for one minute W is ready so I just wanted to go to him really quickly to get a little bit more on the news and then I absolutely want to hear that question but since Adrian you’re here and you broke the news this morning that Dan Hurley is now in the conversation of front runner for the Lakers seventh head coach since 2011 what exactly is the timeline here that both the Lakers and Hurley are working with Malik I’m told that Dan Hurley is going to meet tomorrow okay with Rob palenka the Lakers VP and GM and jeie bus their owner that Dan Hurley his agent Brett just are going to sit down with them tomorrow and start going through the framework of uh what a deal would look like uh and what a Dan Hurley Lakers partnership would look like in LA the Lakers have been extremely aggressive in trying to lure uh Dan Hurley out of Yukon uh back-to- back national championships they see him as the Premier Coach in this Marketplace Rob Peno wants you know he wants Dan Hurley to have you know all the latitude in LA to put his program in Place Player Development you know his you certainly Superior tactical Acumen but there is a presence to Dan Hurley that they really believe is going to translate to the NBA his ability to forge relationships this is a uh negotiation that has traction uh this is a situation for Dan Hurley where the opportunity here to sign a long and very lucrative contract uh is available to him and he is very serious about these conversations he’s having with the Lakers I I do think this is a process that one way or another will wrap up fairly quickly W thank you so very much we will see more of you on NBA Countdown Mr won I I didn’t mean to interrupt no no no no we need to hear from W but I I’m just wondering this with apologies to Larry Brown and Chuck Daly for so long the NBA was wary of college coaches Bob that seems to have changed dramatically has it I don’t know I has it has it has it Billy Donovan right y Brad Stevens Brad Stevens who was fantastic here and they’re the cops right who hasn’t worked patino who was here that that wasn’t great your your calip Perry didn’t work great college coaches I think um you guys know Stephen A know I mean it’s it’s and I don’t know this is where Josh is interesting you played for a Hall of Fame college coach Jay Wright is awesome Jay Wright would had to make a big adjustment and you know this you can speak to this to coach you in the NBA be a very different thing it’s totally different um in the program like college you have so much control like you talked about earlier you’re able to recruit the guys that you want in the that fit your kind of mode so you have all to say here not as much those guys are already there so does he have the ability to really have those relationships with you know what he’s trying to do it’s tough the X and O’s is there but it’s everything that comes with like you said it’s it’s tough going from college where you have so much control over that program to to the NBA under normal circumstances everything that y’all are talking about is highly relevant it’s just not relevant for this particular situation allow me to explain allow me to explain I’m here to help you this is what we deal with Josh this is part of the program I’m here to help you I’m here to help here’s the situation we’re talking about the Los Angeles Lakers who outside of their championship in the bubble have gone 14 years without anything but that title you’re in the top two Market in America you’re losing in five games in the first round you’ve got one of the greatest players to have ever played the game in LeBron James approaching his 22nd season approaching 40 years of age there’s a window of opportunity there for him there’s a longer window of opportunity for Anthony Davis but pieces that you want to evolve around him even LeBron James wants Anthony Davis to be of a of a priority the problem is with the Los Angeles Lakers with all of these es that you have had you’re in and out with guys Frank vogle wins a title more than a year later he’s out Darin ham gets you to the Western Conference Finals a year later he’s out they can’t seem to make up their mind and as a result of that you go to Dan Hurley now you got to give him the bank and you got to give him the years and because he’s getting the bank in the years what you’re alluding to and others wait a minute now you don’t get to just sit up there and say well we going to pick the players uh uh you know and you just coach oh no no no no no he’s the man now him with Pika they’ll work working Conant with one another but make no mistake about it he’s going to have some say he ain’t going to La just a coach one of the most interesting things I think that W said in his reporting earlier on NBA today as well is that this makes the Lakers as a destination for Brony with that 55th pick much more realistic of a possibility if he is still on the board [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] h
