Dan Hurley back-to-back National Championships in college is traveling to La for a meeting with the Lakers today this comes after LA’s pursuit of Hurley accelerated and the organization is eager to close in on a deal last night Stephen A Smith weighing in on the Move he’s a winner he’s a two-time champion but that was in college the pros are a different level and ultimately it comes down to the players and how receptive they are to receiving your message on a continuous basis not to mention that franchise with that pressure cooker that is that market a lot comes with it if anybody can handle it anybody deserves the chance to handle it it is Danny Hurley but it it remains to be seen yeah I mean it certainly is a a horse of a different color what whatever you want to say I mean it’s a different kind of situation that he might be walking into there again W with all this reporting yesterday and it continues and it looks like that is very much headed towards getting something completed Wendy you’re there obviously talking to everyone around the NBA is there are there any reporting details we should fill people in on before we offer some thoughts well I just think it’s important for the Lakers to try to close this weekend uh I know that this has momentum as W talked about but it’s been it’s been emphasized to me this is not a done deal that there is still relationship building and conversations that need to take place that are probably going to take place over the next couple of days um and you know Yukon had a chance now to to sort of move back you know one of the things that didn’t happen in the wake of that second Championship Yukon was not able to get a contract extension done with Dan Hurley in these two months that have passed since they won that champ that title and that we’ll point out this week they did get one done with Gina Ora their legendary women’s basketball coach that’s in place so now Yukon is scrambling trying to improve their offer to give him another option as he weighs what is a certainly a lucrative offer from the Lakers look there’s so many tentacles to this we spent two hours on the radio diving into a lot of the stuff yesterday today just just for the college piece of this um myON medcafe who covers college basketball for us tweeted yesterday every player on that Yukon team will have a 30-day window to transfer if Dan Hurley does go to the Lakers if that happens as he writes I’m not sure we’ve seen anything like that in the college basketball transfer portal era involving a potential preseason number one team so that hangs in the balance as well but but UD let me go right to you here I you played for legendary coaches down there in Miami and have been around them people who have extraordinary credibility Pat Riley Eric spola can get up in front of a group of multi-millionaires and lay down the law Dan Hurley walks in with about as much credibility I would think as a college basketball coach can and yet it isn’t quite the same thing you heard Stephen a talking about that a little bit there how do you see that working I think it can work he has a great basketball bloodline he comes from a history of basketball and coaches and great basketball minds and LeBron James is one of the greatest basketball Minds that I’ve ever been around and that we’ve ever known in a game of basketball so they will definitely collaborate on that level now you talk about a guy who comes in with that fire and that battery and that energy that’s what the Lakers need they need to shake it up a little bit they need to coach with some fire they need a coach with some energy they need to get back to being uncomfortable that’s the guy that’s going to push the buttons I love this move and once again he challenges Brown because he has a basketball mind and braon has a great basketball mind as well and braon respects that you rather be respected by LeBron than like he will respect that Dre you you cover the college game for us foron is not aware you you’re on the road with all these games all season long so you’ve been around coach Hurley how do you see him making this jump he I see him making it extremely well and I see him making it by leaning on the people around him connecting to LeBron James because LeBron James has already showed he respects Dan Hurley he tweeted out his respect to Dan Hurley for everybody to see so that relationship I see being huge LeBron’s going to be the key piece as far as connecting Dan Hy to the rest of the team but Dan Hurley he runs a pro style offense at Connecticut everyone’s impressed with his offense he runs a defense that has a lot of variables in it sometimes they switch the screen sometimes they hedge the screen sometimes they play in drop coverage he’s already shown that he has a system of course they are going to have to be tweaks the NBA plays a lot of games it’s the NBA but he has a system already in place that can be elevated and expanded to the NBA I see it working so Allan there are two different parts of this job you’re taking two different jobs you’re taking a job for the next year or two where you’re the coach of a LeBron James Le team you’re taking a job that for some period of time after that because all the conversation yesterday if he weren’t with us is about this is a long-term deal this is a play for the long run that the Lakers are going to make and Wendy told us that LeBron supports that that’s a different job and and that part of it I think Dan Hurley is is tailor made for right develop players put together a system and all that stuff but trying to win Championship to thread the little tiny needle that LeBron has left that’s a very tough putt for anybody yeah that’s that that’s the initial job right that’s the first priority is to see what we can do right away and if I was Anthony Davis I’d also be excited about this when you consider what Donovan kingan was able to do in that system there’s a lot of things that Anthony Davis would do even to another level playing that style with the way he used his bigs but you’re right this is not just about right now this is about a transition period after LeBron James does walk away and you still have Anthony Davis can you stay competitive while also developing players around you and that’s the hard part that’s why by the way this is probably going to be a record contract unlike we’ve ever seen in the NBA I mean Eric spoler over $100 million extension that he has in Miami it’s got to look something like that because you can’t do the normal fiveyear plan this is not Five-Year Plan but what you like about it and what I know Wendy’s talked about this and what wo reported that I really like the most is the Lakers want not just to hire a coach but to hire somebody that’s going to give them a culture and a standard which is very much like as UD can certainly attest to heat culture we talk about yeah there needs to be Laker culture something that lasts Beyond two three years well that’s exactly right and Pat Riley is the heat culture he started it in Los Angeles Bill Jackson brought a culture they won back on the plane to Connecticut without having agreed to be their coach so you have to assume that it’s going to be a massive Financial offer but it’s also going to be important how they talk to each other how they build a relationship how they can see this going forward especially as it can comes down to potentially how much of a say Hurley might have and how the roster is put together that’s always a big thing for a college coach coming to the NBA and I will point out Yukon does indeed have a window here they did they did not get a contract extension done with him before this situation developed he said in an interview earlier this week it’s taken more time than he wanted to get a deal done they did get one done with their legendary women’s Coach gin Orma so it can get done so Yukon has that opportunity to counter here to try to give him incentive to stay put in stores so with all that said big perk I’ve not had a chance to hear from you do you think Dan Hurley is the right choice for the Lakers to coach LeBron James next year and Coach that team going forward I do but this is not about LeBron James greeny this is not a LeBron James hire this is a Los Angeles Lakers hire and an Anthony Davis hire Anthony Davis is the guy that’s in his prime Anthony Davis is the one that needed be to be connected to Dan Hurley and Dan Hurley needs to be connected to Anthony Davis for as putting him in position to be successful but when you talk about a a coach that is qualified that knows the game of basketball that was born into the game of basketball he checks all the boxes now when it comes down to holding guys accountable especially guys like ad and LeBron that’s going to have to come from jeie bus and Rob pinka and if I’m Dan Hurley I’m walking in that office and the first thing that we need to do is get an understanding that I could trust you I could trust you guys to have my back I could trust you guys to allow me to be Dan Hurley a guy that that has that has a resume of getting in in God’s asses when need be and I don’t have to look over my shoulder it’s a reason AOS is one of the best coaches in the game today it’s because he has the support of Pat Riley and Co and players can’t go behind his back and say you know what hey we’re not feeling coach and then all of a sudden he’s without a job when you look around the league the teams that are having success the coaches that are having success they have the full support and Trust of the front office it’s absolutely right all those things get settled perhaps as soon as this weekend we could see a
