5th Pick, Detroit Pistons | 2024 Mock Draft

Gran City media fans welcome back into our mock draft Omari sov the second is joining us to represent the Detroit Pistons Omari welcome thanks for having me as always KY I think this is either year three or year four of this right like it’s become annual I think it’s year four and I think yeah the Pistons have had pretty good picks in the past couple years I would say Kade uh was like wasn’t great at the beginning but like he averaged pretty high numbers this year um last year’s pick one of the Thompson brothers s uh didn’t wasn’t really like what I think piston fans would have um he’ll he has Room to Grow yeah and then this year the chances were tied with one other team for the highest chances for the first overall pick and unfortunately I think Detroit is a little bit disappointed with this fifth overall pick especially in a draft where everyone is a little wishy-washy with all of the picks um Detroit went 14 and 68 this year they have combined for 31 wins in the last two seasons uh so I guess my question to start off really before we get to who you choose is do you think that Detroit goes with someone fitwise that you want to fit with with Kaden assar or do you go simply with just like the best talent and try and bring Talent into this team that like needs needs three-point shooting it needs defense it needs ball handling it needs so much still yeah I think you go best player available um you have Kade who’s like a really solid piece you mentioned he was really solid last year think he average 23 and seven uh pretty good efficiency and you have a lot of other young guys who are in various stages of development at this point but none of them have really become a clear number two uh so because of that I would just take whoever the best player there is U you know at five like you know obviously it’s probably being Whitted down a good bit but I also think just because there’s no consensus you may get a player who’s top two on your board at five just because some of the teams in front of you may draft for need so definitely BPA for sure okay best player available and again there is absolutely no consensus from one moth draft to another so I have texted you the four picks that were ahead of you which could be completely different than what someone else has on their board in our grind City media 2024 mock draft Omari I am putting you on the clock to represent the Detroit Pistons who are you going with I’m gonna go with Donovan kingan Donovan kingan uh two time national champ out of Yukon he is a big dude he is 72 uh 74 wingspan he weighs 280 pounds he has I will say uh the thing that a lot of people love about him and obviously there’s a lot of things but like his main thing is this like defensive monster and Detroit this year their defense was ranked 25th overall um Donovan is really good at anticipating on defense he has the length like I said his wing span is long like he does stuff where you don’t get the stats really but like he changes how people even attack the rim um which we saw kind of like w do that a lot this year how do you think he fits with Detroit’s pieces that they have right now so as you alluded to they need a little bit of everything you win 14 games you probably need everything uh but I think uh if you have a chance to really address your run protection for the next decade plus you know I think that’s a pretty easy decision to make and I really like ree Shepard too like him and kingan are two of the guys I feel like probably have the highest chances of being above average starters pretty much from day one but the do not have great BM protection last year they have Jaylen durren who’s still young but he’s much further on offense than defense and you you have James wisan I don’t know if James wisan is like two Memphis guys which is you know I know I know Grizz fans this thing are very familiar with those guys but um The Rim protection aspect is still a need you maybe not have a need at the center position but uh it’s not just Rim protection for kinging too I mean he’s a really great Lop threat obviously being 72 of a huge wingspan and he’s a really good passer which you know I think bumps him up a tier for me because you’re not going to be able to really put too many bodies on him you know he’s going to punish you and you can surround him and Kate with Shooters and I think be in really great shape and he’s also been shooting it like a lot of evaluators are higher on his shooting even though he shot like below 60% at the free throw line last season so I don’t think you draft him because he may one day be able to shoot but he’s shown that there something he wants to get better at which I think adds to it so uh just a really good all-around Center I think he’s a perfect fit with Cade I think he lifts your floor immediately it’s funny you talk about the free throw shooting because earlier this week someone said look we know that he’s always going to be tall he’s always going to be 72 but something that we don’t always know is that you can teach someone to shoot a free throw better so um going back to rim production I do have a stat here that says that opponents this year in college shot 43% at The Rim in this sophomore year for him when was on the floor um and 43% at The Rim like is not good so I think he’s just like that perfect piece to Center your defense around and you talked about it a little bit as well because he does have that passing upside I can pick sure um you know people come and and double him down low or wherever he is and I think Kate will be able to like search for his shots um pretty well having that big presence inside so I do think it’s a good fit um I think anyone would actually be happy having him because every team in the NBA needs defense yeah I agree and I was surprised when you sent me the current picks that uh he was there him and Reed Shepard with their F five I think one of those guys would definitely go uh top five so uh if the board works out that way for Detroit uh you know treas and Lan just got in so St to say what his draft strategy would be but I would have to imagine they’d be pretty happy yeah so uh Detroit is not going to have a ton of time like less than a month with a new front office to kind of decide who and what direction they’re going with um it’s an interesting time in Detroit and I think we said the same thing last year interesting time yeah the times have remained interesting in Detroit for a lot of different reasons but yeah he pretty much I mean what it’s June 1st the day we’re recording this so he’s got less than a month really like three weeks to sort of get his staff together and put a pick on the board but since he was you know he’s coming from New Orleans like I would assume that he probably you know was deeply involved in scouting on that side and then can probably just take a lot of the same notes with them but we’ll see we’ll see yeah it’s definitely a time where there’s a lot of you know uncertainty just as far as how the next four or five weeks will play out given all the recent change yeah Omari thank you so much your pick I think is one of the best picks yet so congratulations for our mock draft I appreciate your time so very much and uh yeah we’ll see how Detroit um or we’ll see who Detroit actually picked less than a month from now no doubt thanks for having me Kelsey

  1. We don’t want Klingan. Need Zach Edey. Kobe had Shaq. Cade needs Zach. Keep putting wings we got wings. Trade Duren for a pick. Beef stew back up to Zach. Go get Christian Wood and Luke Kennard. Keep Ivey Asar Grimes Sasser Fonteccio and the 50 pt guy. And work from there. No Brandon Ingram. Cade had that type player in Grant. Come on stop trying to make the Pistons a 3 chucking up team. Never been our Identity. We need the Big Bully on the block for the team. Detroit basket Baall!!!
