Did The Celtics Have The Easiest Finals Run In NBA History?
what if I told you the 2024 Celtics might have had the easiest Road ever to the NBA finals the Boston Celtics have punched their ticket to the Eastern Conference Finals imagine dominating every game and cruising to the NBA finals without breaking a sweat this was the reality for the 2024 Celtics final seconds that’s it it’s over the Celtics are heading back to the NBA finals with hours spent digging through historical playoff data I’ve compared the 2024 Celtics journey to every finals team in NBA history how did the caliber of Celtics opponent stack up against those from previous years what did the numbers reveal and was this truly the most effortless Journey to the NBA finals in history we’re going to explore these bold questions today so buckle up the ride is about to start ladies and gentlemen is over and we congratulate the Detroit Pistons the NBA champions of the year and the Chicago Bulls have won their first ever NBA [Applause] championship first let’s take a quick Journey back through NBA history it’s not entirely fair to compare teams from the past with today’s teams as the league has undergone significant changes over the years especially in how the playoffs are structured take the legendary Bill Russell for instance during his Prime from his first championship in 1957 to 1965 he only had to win one Series in the playoffs to get to the NBA Finals over those nine years he did this eight times and grabbed eight of his 11 championship rings the NBA Playoffs actually didn’t expand to include four series until 1975 even then however the top seeds from each division received a Buy in the first round for instance in 1975 teams like the Celtics the bullets the Bulls and the Warriors all skipped the opening round and started their playoff runs from the conference semifinals in fact it wasn’t until 1984 that every team no matter their seating had to participate in the first round of the playoffs even then however the opening round was just a best of Five series meaning the first team to win three games would Advance it actually wasn’t until 2003 that the opening round was extended to a best of seven format hence when I answer the question of did the Celtics have the easiest path to the finals ever I have to consider these subtle details so with that being said for this video I’ll be concentrating our discussion from 1984 onward covering the last 40 years because the truth is anything before that had such different formats that making Fair comparisons just wouldn’t work and with that framework set let’s dive into the Journey of the 2024 Boston Celtics to reach the finals the Celtics faced a Miami team with 46 wins a Cavaliers team with 48 wins and a Pacers team with 47 wins so on average they face teams that won 47 games which isn’t particularly strong but isn’t too shabby either if we’re looking to identify the top eight teams that based on the numb since 1984 fa the weakest opponents on their way to the finals these are the teams that clearly stand out out just to highlight a few of them the top spot goes to the 1987 Lakers led by Magic Johnson with their opponents averaging just 39.3 wins then at number three we have the 2023 Denver Nuggets marking the beginning of what many thought would be the Joker’s era facing teams that averaged 43.3 wins even LeBron’s 2013 Heat team makes the list alongside Jordan’s first championship team the 1991 Chicago Bulls with their opponents averaging about 44 wins what’s really striking about this list is that four of the showtime Lakers teams are on this list if we’re criticizing the Celtics for their relatively easy path in 2024 it might also be worth discussing whether Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul Jabar had it a bit too easy but that’s a conversation for another day so interestingly by the Numbers the 2024 Celtics actually f B tougher competition than all those legendary teams we mentioned why then is there a narrative that the 2024 Celtics had the easiest path could it be that they’re considered boring to watch or that we’re all just hating on them well not exactly you see when the Celtics faced teams that on average won 147 games these weren’t just any teams these were handicapped teams missing their star players due to injuries for example the Miami Heat were without their Superstar Jimmy Butler for that entire first round series the Cavaliers on the other hand were missing Jared Allen and All-Star caliber center for the entire series and also Donovan Mitchell who couldn’t play after game three then in the Conference Finals the Pacers were down their all NBA player Tyrese halberton right after game two and were without their Rising Star Benedict Maan for the entire Series so as you can see though it was no fault of their own the Celtics didn’t just face teams that were already much weaker they faced teams that were even more handicapped by injuries and to illustrate just how much weaker their opponents were because of injuries I need to thank the ringer.com which used some Advanced statistics to paint a clearer picture to sum it up they applied a metric called winds above replacement to adjust the average wins for each opponent for a quick example Jimmy Butler was valued at 9.2 wins above replacement this season so because he was out for the entire series they took the Heats record win of 46 and subtracted 9.2 from it which brings it down to 37 that makes sense I mean without Jimmy Butler the heat are essentially a team that would likely only win about 37 games anyway here’s what the number crunching revealed the 2007 Cavaliers led by LeBron James saw their opponent’s average win total drop from 45 to 38.9 when adjusted for injuries the 1985 Lakers saw a similar drop from 43.3 to 38 8.6 but the 2024 Boston Celtics after accounting for injuries saw their opponents’ average wins plummet from 47 to 37.3 so according to these Advanced metrics adjusted four injuries the 2024 Celtics indeed had the easiest path to the NBA finals I mean 37.3 that’s almost like facing three teams on the level of the Atlanta Hawks led by Trey Young that really puts things into [Music] perspective on a similar note it’s interesting to think about why no one really talked about the 2023 nuggets and their seemingly easy road to the finals I mean although they face teams that were completely healthy those teams averaged only about 43 wins a number that wouldn’t even qualify for the playoffs or the playin tournament in the 2024 Western Conference could it be because Nicola yic was just that dominant making any opponent seem trivial or maybe it’s because despite the low win averages they went up against fully healthy star players like Edwards and Cat in the first round followed by Booker and Durant in the second and then LeBron and AD in the Conference Finals perhaps it’s a bit of both but it’s definitely something to talk about this actually brings up another interesting question if the 2024 Celtics had the easiest path to the finals then which team faced the toughest Journey well after meticulously and painstakingly going through every team since 1984 two teams really stand out as having had to overcome the most challenging opponents the first team that really stands out is none other than the 2011 Mavericks looking back it’s clear that those Mavericks were something else I mean their first round matchup against Portland might not have seemed too tough but what followed was an exhausting challenge like in the second round they faced the defend Champions the Los Angeles Lakers which not only had 57 wins but also featured Kobe Bryant in his prime and the Maverick swept them next they fa the Oklahoma City Thunder a 55- win team brimming with young talents like Kevin Durant Russell Westbrook and James Harden and it didn’t stop there either in the finals they went up against the Miami Heat a team that won 58 games and had in its roster a prime LeBron James Dwayne Wade and Chris chis Bosch Dirk nitz’s journey through those playoffs was truly extraordinary over the last three rounds he had to overcome teams with an average of 56.7 wins so when I think back on it Dirk’s performance during that Championship run deserves far more recognition considering the caliber of opponents he had to overcome Terry to nitzki puts up the three puts it in Dallas goes up by three if you thought the Mavericks path was tough though the 1995 Houston Rockets faced what is indisputably the hardest route ever taken to the NBA finals consider this while the 2024 Celtics adjusted for injuries faced teams averaging 37.3 wins the challenge for Hakim Alan’s Rockets was on a completely different level to illustrate what I mean by completely different level let’s Dive Into The Gauntlet they had to navigate in the first round as the six seed theck Rockets faced the third seed Utah Jazz a formidable 60- win team featuring Carl Malone and John Stockton both of whom were in their Prime and made the all-nba first team that year the challenges only intensified in the second round where they took on the second seed Phoenix Suns a team with 59 wins and Charles Barkley also in his prime and named to the all NBA second team that year the climax of their conference battles was in the third round against the top seat in the west the San Antonio iio Spurs who had won 62 games this team was led by David Robinson who was not only in his prime and an all NBA first team hore but also the MVP of the league That season the Rockets not only had to face but also defeat the three best teams in their conference each led by basketball Legends at their Peak this meant that their path to the finals involved conquering opponents who on average won 60.3 games which is absolutely insane then after those intense battles in the west the Rockets fa the top seed from the East the Orlando Magic this team featured Shaquille O’Neal Who made the all NBA second team that year and who was just an absolute force on the court attempts trailing by one here’s the double on O’Neal trille Orlando you know it’s often discussed in NBA circles that hakee aluan only won his two championships during Michael Jordan’s Hiatus from the NBA which some used to diminish his achievements but when you consider the grueling path hakee navigated in 1995 to secure one of those titles it becomes clear just how much he earned those accolades facing top tier teams backto back each featuring some of the era’s greatest players hakeem’s 1995 Championship run was nothing short of legendary so when you stack the 2024 Celtics against teams like the 95 Rockets the comparison almost feels like a joke interestingly though on a similar note not only did the 2024 Celtics have one of the easiest paths to the finals but they’re also arguably the most boring team in NBA history of course there are no hard statistics to back this up but after digging into it I’ve uncovered why both myself and many NBA fans find them incredibly dull and if you’re curious to find out what makes the 2024 Celtics so yawn worthy do yourself a favor and click on the video right over here

Do these Celtics look like they have dynasty potential?
It's close but it has to be last year's Nuggets as they faced no one who won over 45 games.
7:48 jokic 😂
That would’ve had been the Lakers during bubble Covid year.
this dude is on a generational celtics hater run rn lmao
Does it matter if they beat the mavs?
Good perspective but not entirely fair. Need to account for towards end of season trade for all-star caliber players that contributes significantly to winning but not reflected on regular season record
WTF is it with the eastern conference that its been so bad for like 15 years? There's been like 1 or 2 good teams and a bunch of teams that only make the playoffs because theres 6 more seeds to fill. Makes me actually want that hypothetical format where the Top 16 best records make it regardless of conference. Round 3 and the Finals would be must watch TV.
What. Thats the format. Number 1 against the weakest team, then the weaker team 4 or 5…. And opponent star injured.. if cle or ind know they have the shot. They will play.
These are the kind of click bait videos you make when you've run out of ideas but need to maintain views and income revenue.
Not once did u mention that Kp got injured. Does that mean nothing?? Bias goes crazy
What do you have to say about JxmyHighRoller's video (Using Numbers To Find The Most Difficult NBA Championship Ever Won) 3 years ago that LeBron's 2020 Championship run was the easiest run?
We did not have porzingis for all but 2 games this post season
Yes!
List of players injured:
Joel Embiid
Damian Lillard
Giannis Antetekounmpo
Josh Hart
Og Anunoby
Jalen Brunson
Donovan Mitchell
Tyrese Haliburton
Jimmy Butler
Jarett Allen
Bennedict Mathurin
Celtics fans, don't say nothin about Kristaps who is a 3rd option being injured 😆
12:11 sorry we’re trying to win not make highlights. The goal is to win… isn’t it
So basically they beat the Hawks 3x going to the finals… impressive
Is nobody gonna mention how the Celtics are also like 50 million dollars over the cap space. They are literally just buying and paying the best players so much. I know Boston is a pretty rich city but I find it unfair. Memphis wouldn’t be able to go 50 million over the cap space. The amount of money they would have to pay the NBA. The would have to start selling the players organs
i'm forever gonna be a generational celtics hater but i still think the injuries excuse is absolutely lame. fuck the celtics forever and always but you can't just blame injuries for an easy path.
What about this year's Mavs?
Let’s not forget the league was 3x as physical than the nba today.
Doesn’t matter your boy Luka is getting swept 😂
If Boston would have losed would anyone have said oh Boston was down a key player (Porzingis) and The Narrative would have been JT and JB could not do it they need to split them up
Bird is the best Magic had a top 5 & a weak West.
Mavs 11 had injured Kobe so that’s one series with a question.
They struggled against the Pacers, that says a lot.
The Mavs got this.
Also the bucks,76ers,knicks being injured gave boston a easy matchup even if haliburton was healthy
U forgot to add the number of superstars and the number of superstars on other teams
