EP. 426 – Offseason Roadmap – Orlando Magic Podcast
this is the sixthman show an Orlando Magic podcast with your hosts Luke Sylvia and Jonathan Osborne covering all things Magic Basketball by fans for fans go [Music] magic what’s going on Orlando Magic fans you guys are back with the six-man show today is June 10th 2024 Jonathan Osborne here tonight joined by Kevin Tucker Luke Sylvia a little Beach vacation action this week that lucky dog uh but Kev what’s going on man how are you you know I’m doing I’m doing pretty well um feeling super uh grateful kind of um at a loss for words in a lot of ways um if you listened to the last episode Jonathan kind of shared you know uh well several episodes ago we shared about my medical situation that’s kind of on the horizon but last episode Jonathan kind of opened up the floodgates with our GoFundMe that you know magic fans have been so generous um to to help me and my family out and so like I said just feeling I mean Beyond grateful it’s it’s funny I have uh obviously people in my life outside of the magic sphere of of things and they asked me you know a while ago they were like hey can we start you like a GoFundMe or is there something we can do and I was like my my friend Jonathan is is doing one for me and I’ll send you the link you know when um when when that opens and I didn’t send it right away cuz like once Jonathan opened it up I was kind of like what’s I’m just curious like what what what’s the magic Community going to do you know and like the response was ludicrous like it was insane and very humbling um very humbling experience and so obviously after a little while I kind of you know post it to the rest of the world outside the magic Community but I just have to say thank you so much to everybody I mean people I know people I don’t know people that I are mutual friends of people that I barely know I mean like it’s just been a crazy thing and I’m just again Beyond grateful the fact that um what was going to be a a a huge burden and like a mental weight on me and my family is now gone like the fact that I can just focus on this surgery and getting healthy and all that kind of stuff and not have to worry about the the fact that I will be missing work and the hospital bills and all those things like it’s all like just totally taken care of it don’t have to worry about it it’s just it’s there’s not enough words to to say how much that means to me and to my family and the the gratitude that we have so all that to say Jonathan doing great feeling great ready to to tackle this surgery in about three weeks from when you guys are listening to this just a really cool thing to to witness you know like obviously it’s it’s not my situation but it’s the situation of somebody that like is like very important to me and and Kevin and and you know your wife and and your kids like and just thinking about what the like the weight of the situation that you’re going into just on its face and in this surgery right but then thinking about all the other things that you you know you’re going to be faced with sort of after the fact while you’re trying to to rest up and just like every dollar and every donation that comes in like I can’t just help but be like really excited for for you guys and what that means for you and like it just warms your freaking heart like seeing a community like you know we have just sort of rally around you and and your family and like you said like strangers and people that we don’t even know um just like being generous you know with with you know obviously everybody you know money’s tight with everybody these days and just seeing people step up over and over and over again and the help is just really really awesome and um just really really a cool thing to to witness the last few days yeah and it’s it’s funny like I had several people that would give like you know $5 $20 and they text me like sorry I can’t do more and I’m like are you kidding me 20 bucks that’s that’s a meal for my family like like think about that like that’s that’s a lunch that my especially like my wife while I’m the first week when I’m literally like a vegetable my wife doesn’t have to worry that’s that’s enough food that’s enough money to take care of my family for a meal like are you kidding me so every every dollar counts every dollar has been amazing and again just beyond grateful we’ll always be grateful for for this this is something I will definitely never ever forget well we do have a couple of other announcements uh as the show continues to evolve um you know with Luke transitioning slowly out of the show Kevin and I started to talk about like hey what is what is that going to look like for a number of the different you know pieces of content that we put out the podcast obviously the postgame lives that we’ve been doing uh the six fan show you know that that Ben has been doing as well and as you know Kevin and I talked it it just seemed like the the most logical thing would be for Kevin to sort of slide in as the co-host of the Pod but then we started talking about well what does that look like for the postgame because we do roughly like 50 of these during the regular season plus the playoffs so to do 50 episodes of the show where we’re talking about the team for an hour plus and then you did what 90 plus postgame lives last year when you talk about the preseason the regular season and the postseason so to try to do 140 different things uh over the course of six months like it’s just not feasible for any one person to do that so we started basically you know slowly and quietly looking for help um with the postgame live so we are super excited to announce that we’re bringing two members onto our team uh that are going to help with the postgame lives um in different ways we’re still discussing that as a team in terms of like what the best version of that is going to look like um but if you are familiar with magic Twitter and some of the the personalities there um Sam melhuish uh who I met through magic Twitter and everybody on Magic Twitter knows the other guy uh Matt Rogers better known as Maddy World Peace um both of those guys are going to be joining the team and helping us uh with postgame live and just helping us with other content both awesome dudes both super crazy passionate and knowledgeable magic fans bring you know different personalities and and different flavors to the the team and and what they’ll bring to to the postgame live broadcast casts and uh a lot of uh you know transactions happening in the the six-man show uh you know offseason here obviously Luke is a is a massive loss although he’s still going to be a big part of the team but like two massive Acquisitions in in Sam and Matty world pieace and and couldn’t be more excited about those guys joining the team and and really looking forward to working with them Kev sixthman show is not stay in Pat this offseason we’ll talk more about that later but I’m just saying a lot of moves happening you know uh and and a lot of good ones so obviously very very excited about Sam and and mty World Peace there it’s going to be a good gonna be a good uh season coming up not just for the magic but I think for the six-man show as well so if you follow those guys on Twitter first of all Maddy World Peace his Twitter handle is literally Maddie World Peace Matty y World Peace pea CE go ahead and throw him a follow and then Sam can be found found on Twitter I’m trying to pull up his he’s samore melhuish samore Mel Hui so if you don’t follow either of those guys or both of those guys already go ahead and and throw them a following again welcome those guys to the team and and we could not be more excited to have them a part of the six-man show here before we you know go into what we have planned uh for today uh Bobby Marx who is like a NBA analyst you know free agency guy salary cap stuff used to be the assistant GM of of the Brooklyn Nets some time ago uh every offseason he goes through and does like an offseason guide for every team and he did one for the magic and we’re going to talk through some of the highlights of that in just a little bit but before we do that some Magic news you know slash rumor kind of stuff one thing that came out today from um Jake wbach who can be found at jok nba.com he says he’s an NBA an and writer covering the league since 2019 formally with Hoops habit and behind the bucks he’s been featured on ESPN Radio Sports Illustrated Yahoo sports so you know valued opinion you know to a to a certain extent and this isn’t exactly a rumor but it’s been a talking point amongst magic fans and uh if we go back and we talk about you know some of the last episodes we’ve done in talking about the offseason one guy that we didn’t really talk a ton about was Anthony Simons and that is on me for just not including him in the list when we go through uh you know some pre-show stuff as we get prepared here but he tweeted out today uh Sunday as we’re recording he said multiple teams including the Orlando Magic should register interest in Blazers guard Anthony Simons this off season Portland holds strong regard for The Talented playmaker but he may not fit the team’s long-term trajectory Simons has two years left on his deal at the age of 25 Anthony Simons obviously Orlando’s very own um grew up as a magic fan pre-draft you know talking about the magic said it would be a dream come true to play for the hometown franchise um and and basically the last few years as he’s sort of blossomed and and come to his own in the league he’s been at like every magic fans wish list like if we could go out and acquire any guy around the league Anthony Sims is one of those guys um like really efficient as a shooter obviously a highlevel scorer ball handler playmaker Kev we haven’t talked a ton about Anthony Simons because the way that you would have to acquire him would be via trade it’s not one of these guys that we could go out and lure with a ton of cap space like you would have to convince Portland um to take on some of you know your own assets but what are your thoughts on on Anthony Simons and I guess we can talk just a little bit about what we think a trade could look like if the magic were to pursue that yeah first I want to say this is what we call Silly Season right there there’s moments like this where this guy Jake I believe you said his first name is tweets out not that the magic are interested not that the magic you know there’s rumors around the league that the magic are interested the the line was the magic should be interested you know so this is where we got to read you know into what is being said here this is a suggestion by this guy Jake by all accounts I got I haven’t read anywhere else this is being rumored anywhere else and his language saying should implies to me that he thinks the magic should be interested again based on what the magic need based on the hometown you know all this stuff however if we’re going to run with this conversation which I want to yeah bring me Anthony freaking Simons I mean the guy’s named Anthony like come on I mean if for no other reason we know why he was named that um obviously the hometown stuff aside which is a a good Feelgood story right like if he comes to Orlando that’s going to be one of the coolest things ever but on the basketball court yeah I mean you you talk about what this team needs this team needs a another Creator a shot Creator especially at the guard position he does all those things um obviously three-point shooting a well-known struggle for this team he shot last year Anthony Simons shot 42.7% on catch and shoot threes you think pal and frons aren’t going to generate catch and shoot threes for Anthony Simons I think so again It ultimately comes down to would the magic offer enough to make it interesting for Portland like to make Portland think about it it’s going to be a long shot I know you’ve already looked at you know what a potential trade could look like what are what are some things that you came up with yeah I mean obviously in order to to make a deal like this happen like the money has to match so Anthony Simons uh this upcoming year is going to make 25 Point almost 28 point 25.9 million next year 27.6 million uh but the money’s got to work and when you start looking around the team and this is sort of the same philosophy that I have with approaching a trade for a guy like Trey young is Anthony Simons is not known as like a defensive guy by any means neither is Trey young so if you’re making a move for a guy like this you have to give up as little of that defensive identity as possible if not you’re really just changing so much about your team like if we were to include jayen Suggs or Jonathan Isaac in a trade for Anthony Simons yes you’re getting better offensively but you’re getting so much worse defensively I don’t know if that’s the kind of move that our front office would be interested in making so when I think about a deal for a guy like Anthony Simons some of those more valuable trade assets like a Jaylen Suggs like a Jonathan Isaac to me are sort of off limits because you’re really looking to add to what you have not really take away so much so when you start looking at the fact that you’re losing you know the the money that Marquel folz makes in order to be able to include that in a deal because he’s an unrestricted free agent you’re losing Gary Harris says well the the ways in which you can go to make this money work it it really gets pretty slim and when we look at what the money makes work and also what would work sort of and make sense for both teams you don’t really have a lot of options to make a deal like this work so for me what that would look like would be Cole Anthony Wendell Carter Jr um and probably two first round picks so I would include like this year’s number 18 pick cuz in my opinion the magic really shouldn’t be looking to bring in another rookie essentially you’re hoping that Jed Howard is functionally going to be your rookie next year and then you have that 2025 uh Denver first round pick that you can include for next year because because of the steppan rule you cannot trade consecutive Year’s first round pick so we couldn’t give them this year and next year our own first round pick so that allows you say look next two drafts you’re going to have a first trying to pick one from us one for Denver it makes the money work they get Cole Anthony they’re trying to move on in this scenario they’re trying to move on from Simons because they have Shaden sharp they have scoot Henderson those guys that are probably going to be their like leading back court in the future Cole Anthony isn’t going to disrupt that at all he’s going to be the guy coming in off the bench Wendell Carter Jr you’re getting more big man depth behind you know DeAndre Aton or or Robert Williams and you’re getting him on a relative cheap deal if maybe they’re looking to move on from either of those guys this off season and then you’re getting picks like in this scenario if you’re moving on from Anthony Simons you’re probably looking to do a little bit of a tear down to build back up around Shaden sharp around scoot Henderson while those guys are still on their rookie deals so having a few first round picks in your you know Arsenal there if you want to use those to make other moves that’s probably what they’re going to be looking to to make something bring some guys in that can help them you know win a little bit now uh and get some some draft Capital as well I I don’t even know that this would be enough for Portland to pull the trigger but if I’m Orlando that’s pretty close to like my you know best offer for Simons yeah I would be surprised if there were many Magic fans that didn’t take that deal on the Portland side the other hand I it’s probably not enough like right if I was a Portland fan if I saw that I’d probably turn it down I feel like they might be able to get more elsewhere but again to your point I 100% agree adding anything else to that deal can totally change the dynamic of this team which I don’t think the front office wants to do I don’t I don’t think most magic fans want to do that either for an an Anthony Simon so I agree a Cole Wendell two firsts maybe they need a second in there I don’t know that that would be amazing to me now here’s the question would you go three firsts like if if it has if it had to be done Cole Windell in three first is that too much for Anthony Simons I I don’t think I would go I don’t think I would go quite that far um three first just just feels like a lot um yeah I mean this year you could say well like this pick isn’t really that valuable maybe you don’t even really want it anyways you give up the 2025 and then you give up like your own 2026 pick maybe um but I I think I would have a hard time doing that and for anybody that’s like oh well why are we giving up Cole or why are we giving up Wendell when you look at the rest of the roster like again with this philosophy of not giving up your defensive identity there’s not a ton else that you could really offer do they want Joe Engles no do they want chuma okk no do they want Mo Vagner probably not do they want Anthony black why would they be trading for a young guard in this situation when they’re trying to build around these other two young guards maybe they want Jed Howard I don’t know if they want Jed Howard then sure like if you have to throw Jed Howard in there to make that deal happen you probably do that right um but for lot of reasons I just don’t see this move super realistic for the magic and I think that’s part of the reason why we didn’t really talk about it a ton as people were bringing it up a couple of weeks ago because in my opinion Portland would have to make a bit of a mistake to take a a deal like that I feel like they could get more value for Anthony Simons than that yep a little bit of draft news uh I know you know we’ve been talking about how we’re going to talk about draft prospects and that is coming um we’re hoping you know Keandre from hoop intellect who’s come on the show the last couple of years and talked about the draft uh we’re hopeful to to get him on the pot in the next week or so to talk some more a draft I know there’s some draft junkies out there that really want to hear all that and uh we we do we we’re looking to bring that as we get closer to the draft here but we do have some news uh from Cody Taylor who covers you know the the rookie wire for USA Today um he’s reported that in the last week the magic have hosted pre-draft workouts for a of players including West Virginia’s rayquan battle Harrison Ingram from North Carolina malavi Leons from Bradley Jamal Sheed from Houston KJ Simpson out of Colorado naquan Tomlin out of Memphis Kevin cross out of tane Dukes Kyle Philip Kowski DJ horn from NC State Osho igodo from Marquette Xavier Johnson from Southern Illinois and Isaac Jones from Washington State and those are just the guys that we have legitimate actual ual confirmations if you’ve been following the magic and their draft process for the N last you know three or four years you know there are guys that they work out that don’t always make it to the media bronze voder you know being one of those and obviously Palo banero never really met with the magic until um you know Zoom I think a few days before the draft before they made that selection so um yeah looking forward to to getting closer to the draft here in the the next couple of weeks and as we start talking about free agency and some of these decisions that the magic have to make with their own free agents depending on how this Celtics Mavs finals go like that could be a week from now that the magic are able to you know start negotiations with their own free agents with a new Collective baring agreement teams are able to start negotiating with their own free agents the day after the final so all that stuff could be happening pretty quickly here Kev yeah yeah meaning just to clarify the day after the finals are done so if it’s four games the very next day you know those negotiations could happen so that could be this week or like we said game seven which would be two weeks from you know as we’re recording this right now Sunday June 9th so like the 23rd so it could be all the way the 24th but that that does mean that’s the latest this could happen the 24th of June is the absolute latest that these you know negotiations with your own free agents can happen so it will be sometime in the next two weeks that we’ll we’ll get you know maybe some information there about that so yeah pretty crazy two weeks from that just over two weeks from the draft and then you know another week after that you know you’re getting into free agency so like it’s it’s all happening here in the next four weeks or so which is Pretty stinking exciting and why is an NBA finalist between Dallas and Boston taking 17 days the craziest it’s a 4H hour and 15minute flight I just looked it up it was Boston in in LA or you know Miami in Portland like you kind of understand that you know six seven hour flights whatever those are but like 17 days for an NBA Finals that just seems a little bit egregious it’s one of the downsides of the NBA pre-planning like the finals dates like they plan these finals games like in the regular season right so like they announced the finals start this day which this year came back to bite the the NBA because both of the the Conference Finals were four and five game series respectively and so but the fact they announced way back in you know December or whatever it was that the finals started this day and all the dates after that and so it’s just a weird weird thing that the NBA does but you know sometimes it works this season I do not think it has worked eight days between the Conference Finals and the finals and now you have 17 days potentially of NBA finals it’s a lot I am old enough to remember the the good old days of the 232 NBA Finals format which was spicy because if you lose that first one of those first two home games yep you’ve got three Road games and and you are in deep deep trouble there all magic fans are very familiar with the 232 format cu9 cuz that was that hurt pretty bad that game five at home so thanks for bringing that Jonathan appreciate sorry well I didn’t mean to I I I you know I should have known better that the conversation would have would have gone that way but Kev let’s talk a little bit about our our friend Bobby marks and some of the things that he had to say about the Magic’s offseason yeah so when you know jonath and I were talking about you know this episode we were kind of trying to figure out how we could talk about a map like a road map for the offseason for the magic you know when we think about their own free agency you think about um you know the uh the free agent class you know that opens up in July think about the rookie class you know with the June the June draft coming up and all those other things it’s like what does a road map look like for this team in the offseason we’re like well hey there’s this guy Bobby marks you know everyone’s pretty familiar with Bobby marks maybe a little bit of a polarizing figure a guy who had um maybe not the best career in terms of uh NBA front office experience but has leveraged that into a career you know with with ESPN and doing you know covering you know NBA free agency and and offseason stuff and all that stuff but anyway right after the Magic’s you know uh game seven loss against the C he came out with this video this offseason guy which he does for every team once their season is over uh and I I will give him credit he’s pretty knowledgeable about every team like he’s not some guy that sits there and and spitballs some stuff does he get everything right no but by and large you know he knows all 30 teams relatively well especially for someone uh who who is a national media member so we kind of took some of some of the highlights from from that uh offseason guide that he put out and wanted to use that to kind of steer our conversation basically react to What Bobby’s saying uh and then kind of be able to give our own thoughts on on that and so the first section of things we want to talk about are extensions all right two guys up for extension we’ve talked about it a little bit on the show two guys up for extension this summer Jaylen Suggs fron Vagner but first Bobby marks talks about pao’s extension which isn’t this summer it’s actually next summer but I do want to share what he says and then obviously we’ll get our reaction this is probably going to be the quickest segment cuz I doubt there’s going to be any disagreement let’s hear what what Bobby had to say about Poo’s extent next year you have a financial window here okay same with o same with Oklahoma City before extensions from a cap perspective hit this summer you’ve got France Vagner and you’ve got jayen Suggs the following year is Paulo banaro banaro is gonna get a Max contract I mean there’s no ifs hands and butts I mean he could call the front office names next year and he’s still going to get a front office I he’s not going to do that but he is in position to get a Max extension in the 2025 offseason that would hit the cap in 2026 Jonathan what do you think pal banero guaranteed Max next off season first I I just want to say I always find these offseason guys entertaining because it’s not his typical setting where he’s on you know live TV and it has to be super polish like that little bit of like he could call them names and well he’s not going to do that but I just I I find that really fun and and a little bit you know Charming for the lack of a better term there but yeah Pao banero if it was possible for the magic to offer him a Max extension three four months like this would already be a done deal the only thing the magic are waiting on is for that freeny window to open up literally next year the day after the finals end I would expect to get news that the magic and poo banero have agreed to terms on a you know designated rookie Max extension you know that’ll take him throughout like what the 2030 or 2031 season something like that like Bobby Mark said no if ANS butts about it that is 100% getting done yeah like I said I expect this to be our shortest segment all in agreement here like it’s going to happen but I I hadn’t put that image in my brain yet Jonathan until you said that wake up the morning after after the Magic win the finals next year and then you get the P I’m just kidding but whenever after the finals you wake up that next morning and the Poo extension you know you know wo or or Shams tweets that out it’s going to hit like crack it’s going to be awesome okay um uh oh the other extensions he talked about Jaylen Suggs we’ll talk about him first what did Bobby marks have to say about Jaylen Suggs and the same with Jaylen Suggs who’s basically the quarterback of this team as far as from a defensive standpoint we’ll probably see his name on all defense going forward uh maybe if not this year in the in the near future here but tied for eighth in Steels ranked in top 10 defensive EST estimated plus minus St uh suggs’s numbers going to be interesting too I mean we looked at um jayen McDaniels in Minnesota I’m not not giving Suggs five for 131 so is it kind of five for 100 somewhere around there is it in that 20 million 1819 similar to Marcus Marcus Smart all the way back as far as what his cap percentage was so Jaylen Suggs extension obviously up for you know discussion this summer very interesting conversation there do you have a ballpark number do you you have an idea already in mind of what either you think Jaylen should get this summer or what you think he might get this summer from from uh the front office yeah I think for me what factors into this is first of all like I look at our like most recent data point with extensions in the magic I look at Cole Anthony right at $13 million a year I think everybody would agree that Jaylen is going to come in at a higher number than Cole Anthony the other thing that comes to mind is I saw something yesterday or the the day before I forget what Outlet reported it but they were talking about all these like TV deals with you know that the NBA are getting ready to to bring in and it’s something like over I think the next 10 to 12 years they’re going to be bringing in 76 billion dollar and I read that and I said they must have missed like the decimal point there like they mean $7.6 billion and I looked into it more and on another uh Outlet verified 7 $6 billion and just what that is going to do to the cap over the next few years and and thankfully the league and and you know the the the Players Association learned their lesson from like the 2016 cap Spike that there’s going to be cap smoothing so we’re not just going to see this one twoyear explosion it’s going to steadily rise over the course of you know the the next few years here as we go along and 20 $25 million now we we get a few years down the road and that’s going to be the new 10 to 15 million range so when you see deals that will inevitably happen this summer and you see guys getting maybe 20 25 million you have to remember three four years from now that’s going to be more like the what we think of now like 167 million um for me with Jaylen my estimation was probably somewhere between like that 18 on the low end to I don’t think he would get 20 five um but depending on how the magic value him offensively and and maybe some of the growth that they could see there that would be pretty shocking you know like he he talked about like the Jen McDaniels deal was like five for 130 like I probably don’t see that happening but like five for a 100 million I I would be really really happy about that for everybody involved yeah that was the number for me kind of I don’t know if floor is the right right phrase but yeah I said I don’t think I can see him getting less than 20 million you average for this this next contract 25 would be a lot you know like you said is it 100 you know for four years or 125 for five I don’t know that seems like a lot but yeah 100 um for for five years yeah I think I think that’s very reasonable I think for both sides it’s it’s still so interesting and this will come with the France’s conversation too about how the new CBA is going to interact with the the new TV money right like it’s just a unique thing obviously the league is in a position that’s never been in before getting over7 billion a year coming up with this next TV deal but anyway um obviously I I think all parties at least I think we agree that parties will come to an agreement on an extension I think that is going to happen Jaylen doesn’t want to leave the magic don’t want to lose him I think an extension is inevitable the dollar signs are actually the big question mark would you agree at least I should ask you you agree think you think that an extension is going to happen if if it if it doesn’t happen I I would be really really surprised I just don’t see you know they’ll have plenty of time to negotiate that like I think it’s up until the the day that the season starts um to come to an agreement with Jaylen but if if you start the season without an extension he’s going to restricted free agency and for a guy that just loves this team so much and is such a big part of the culture I I don’t know why you know either side would would want to to come anywhere near that yeah I I think you know within the first week or so of free agency we see news of an extension for Jaylen yeah I agree and I hope that’s the case I think Bobby mentions it in one of these clips that the deadline is like October 2 I believe is what he mentioned I don’t know I haven’t gone back to double check that but I believe that’s the date he mentioned okay now this is the interesting one here because I know where you stand on this and I’ve heard where Bobby Marx stands on this let’s take a listen to what Bobby Marx thinks about a fron Vagner extension the extensions are going to be fascinating I do not see fron Vagner getting a Max contract I don’t I didn’t even before this first round series I didn’t see he’s a good player and I think we saw that in game um we saw that in game four where he basically exploded for like 30 what 36 points um he is a below average shooter that is the reality of it and you want one for whatever in a game seven um I think he is probably a 25 26 million dollar player he’s not a max player max there’s only there’s only a handful of Max guys non All-Star Max guys Michael Porter Jr Darius Garland Andrew Wiggins those are the three guys there that fit that criteria that got Max contracts that probably shouldn’t have deserved to get it and and the only reason why nobody’s talking about Porter Jr in Denver is because because they’re winning right and he’s actually played well but he’s not a max player come on you know max player is an Allstar franchise level and I know Wendy says it’s the fun Max but I’m not giving the fun Max to fron Vagner here’s here’s what this is interesting this is from my gu stats Williams 29% on all jumpers this season 29 and a half on catch and shoot Jumpers in at least 100 per per second spec Spectrum after the All-Star break 18 and a half% on three pointers that is not Max money I’m not giving fron Vagner Max I am going to extend so Bobby says extend him I think he said what 20 six million somewhere around there not a Max in any capacity for him he thinks he doesn’t doesn’t even come close to deserving it he spouted off some shooting numbers there but I know where you stand stand on this so let’s hear your your thoughts on on a fr’s extension yeah really quickly I just want to help clarify for people that may not understand like what what a Max is so for when you’re signing a a a extension from your U rookie deal right they’re you’re allowed two designated rookie Max extensions per team the max is uh 25% of the cap unless um you’ve made like an all NBA team or one MVP like there are certain um like accolades that you can receive that qualify for like up to 30% of the cap so let’s say the Cap’s not 100 million but in theory let’s say the cap was 100 million a max player would be able to earn either 25 up to $30 million on that I think the cap uh for next year is projected to be like $141 million so we’re talking about whatever you know 25% would be for France vogner you know and that and then at any time if you make an all NBA team or you MVP then you know the the max can be worth more like you know with incentives and all that stuff if if I’m understanding that correctly that that last part I I may be mistaken on um but nothing that Bobby Mark said is is anything that we’re not aware of right like when it comes to you know the the shooting and all that kind of stuff we’ve talked about you know the last couple of PODS like even if fron was just a little bit more efficient like what his shooting numbers would look like and for me it comes down to well what version of fron vonner do you believe in in terms of a shooter do you believe the you know first couple of years where he was around 35 36% or do you believe it you know this year where his shooting just absolutely fell off of a cliff even factoring in the shooting the the three-point shooting the jump shooting all that kind of stuff from the floor he was it was still his most efficient year at 48% from the floor and had a an increase in career highs in every other statistical category besides the three-point shooting when you look at Fran’s numbers and you look at guys you know 610 or or or bigger and I I I talk about the the 610 mark because we talk about his value as a Defender and you know the versatility that he has and the length given his size and his athleticism when you talk about guys 610 and bigger averaging 19 points per game on 48% or better shooting and averaging at least five rebounds per game it’s Joel embiid Giannis KD joic Anthony Davis Mark Canan Carl Anthony towns alrin shenon porzingis fron D Manas sabonis almost all of those guys we would agree are Max guys Bobby likes to bring up those other guys that receive you know the max extensions that you know were not all stars Michael Porter Jr you know Darius Garland he names a couple of other guys you ask any magic fan who they would have Michael Porter Jr or you know Darius Garland whoever else he named all of us are picking fron vogner right fron vogner is better than all of those guys in my opinion and me giving fron the Maxes like I just have the confidence that he is the shooter that we saw the first couple of years rather than what we saw this year and ultimately you know the the conversation that I had with some magic fans is like if it comes down to it are you maxing fron like if you have to right if fron is like I want the max or I’m going to restricted free agency I I’m gonna give him the max rather than upset this guy who I do believe is one of those Allstar level franchise level guys I do believe fron Vagner is that rather than potentially upset him I’m giving him the Max and really not thinking that much about it yeah I’m I’m really really split on this one I I think I’m genuinely at the point where if if it is announced the magic agree to a max deal I’m not going to be angry or disappointed or whatever that’s certainly not the case um however I I can understand if the magic wouldn’t do it now Bobby Mark sat there and talked about shooting numbers and he’s right obviously every magic fan knows fr’s had a bad shooting year but that goes completely against the first two years not that he was a world class shooter in his first two seasons but he certainly was better than he was last season and so we’ve seen the proof that shooting is possible with fron right we’ve seen it uh additionally fron is so much more than a shooter like you just mentioned like the fact that his overall field goal percentage was up this season even though he shot so poorly from the from distance is crazy but then you also add the fact that he’s he’s a good def Ender you know like he is an underrated Defender for for what he does so all that combined you know I I I think I’m probably leaning just barely to not giving a Max but I wouldn’t be mad if they did here’s something else I do want us to consider though with Jaylen with fron I don’t know about pow but with Jaylen and fron and really anybody else in this this core is is this a a unit a group that would at such a young age already be willing to leave a little bit of money on the table to allow for flexibility for the front office to continue to build what they want to be a Powerhouse that lasts for really long time I wouldn’t be surprised if that happened like could Jaylen you know be offered a lot more somewhere else like if if they come to him with a certain number let’s say it’s 20 could he potentially turn that down with the hopes of getting 25 or more or you know pass this you know if he turns out this extension maybe Fran same thing if they offer him 25 could he get a Max somewhere else maybe but are those guys willing already to take a quote unquote pay cut or quote unquote leave money on the table to benefit the whole team I feel like I I’ve seen proof that that’s possible you know does that happen I don’t know but I wouldn’t put it past them to work together as a unit for the betterment of the entire team knowing that they have an eye on a much bigger prize down the road that’s just my thought I think it’s possible but who knows yeah I I think there is something to that like at what point is like and this might sound kind of silly because these guys are making just crazy amounts of money but like at what point are you like no like $20 million a year isn’t is enough I don’t I I can take 20 instead of 25 and then you know we continue to to build but on the other hand it’s like you’re going to give away $5 million like that just seems kind of silly so I I I don’t know that I would be shocked to see that I would probably be a little bit surprised and going back to fr’s I guess I I should have clarified like talking about like where I was saying he was more efficient everywhere the field goal percentage took just a baby drop from 48.5 to 48.2 but two-point effective uh two-point field goals he went from 54% up to 57 career uh or went up from 84 to 85% from the free throw line the effective field goal percentage was down just a little bit because of the three-point percentage but he dropped eight percentage points from behind the arc so doing that and just barely dropping in field goal percentage like just shows you it was so bad from behind the ark but he was so good and so effective everywhere else that to me it’s it’s really not that big of a deal uh but I’ll say this if it comes out and the magic are able to get fronds for 24 2526 million a year and they don’t have to Max him tip your cap to Jeff welman for being a good negotiator because if it was me he’s like yeah I want the max you got it pal sign here we’ll see in a couple of months go have you know a fantastic Olympics whatever the case may be but it’s their job to be shrew negotiators and and to do what is best for the franchise and if you can get really good players for less money than they deserve you’re doing your job as a as a GM so if it comes back and like fron doesn’t get the max I’m not going to be upset about it because honestly that’s probably you better for the magic to have more cap space okay let’s go ahead and take a quick break uh for a word from our patrons or or for our patrons here uh if you’re not familiar already we do have a patreon channel where you can join and help financially support the show and partner with us and get benefits Celtics with 24 seconds left are up 105 to 98 looks like they’re going to take a two games to none lead as you know jonath and I are sitting here now 1 second left so yeah this game’s over seven-point lead for Boston I’m curious what do you think is this is this going to be a sweep is this is Dallas going to win some games at home what do you think I I think before the series I probably I don’t I don’t know that we even talked about this but I probably would have went Celtics in six I probably still feel the same way you know I I don’t know if it looks like Dallas getting the next two at home I I wouldn’t be surprised by that at all just Boston is has been the best team in the league all year you know like they have four Allstars and they’re starting in their starting lineup Derek white awesome as well like you all NBA Defensive kind of guy like borderline All-Star this year poring in game one was ludicrous yeah you know has you know one of the the best games of his career and the biggest game of his career like it just is what it is like Luca’s obviously hurt like he’s been hurt for weeks with you know the knee or whatever is going on Boston just really good they they’ve been really good all year um and it just feels like they they have just a little bit more than Dallas does in this series yeah I hate to say it um yeah I I would love to see Dallas form some sort of a comeback but now obviously you and I did not get to watch this game tonight so I don’t know how it how it ended up the way it did but uh I’m hoping the the Mavs can find some magic at home and tie the series up and make it interesting but we will see back to Bobby marks uh this next quote I really enjoy just because it’s it’s an outsider it’s a non-magic person hyping up the magic situation talking about some of the selling points that the magic franchise has to offer for potential free agents obviously something he talked about in another segment that we’re not really going to touch on because we touched on a lot you know this offseason and will touch on a lot coming into July the cap space magic have a ton of cap space could have anywhere from 30 to 60 something million dollars in cap space depending on what they do with their own free agents and then he talks about you know kind of why Orlando could be a really good destination for pretty much any free agent that’s out there and here’s a quote um we’ve got a quote from Jeff welman who was in the open m podcast we have him quoted here says we have to be very cautious and very targeted in the way that we build out our next steps but I will say we definitely feel like we’ll be able to track players we would not be able to then a couple years ago I don’t think there’s any reason we can’t be thinking about how that can be part of our planning moving forward to attract players from other teams listen I said this in the um I said this in the Miami Heat video and I’m going to say in the Orlando Magic video there’s no place to live than Florida I know you could say la and I know you could say um New York there’s no taxes no state taxes I don’t pay state taxes uh the weather at least nine months out of 12 are beautiful three months you got hurricanes and some other stuff coming through um I’ve been to the Orlando Magic practice facility it’s it’s the nicest practice facility I’ve ever seen out of any team any team it is a five-star Taj Mahal richz Carlton Four Seasons peninsula of practice facilities they got a top-notch front office they got a top-notch coach in Jamal Mosley the pieces are there for Orlando me marks I really like that guy great guy I didn’t like him when he was talking about frond but when he’s talking about that I really like him a lot yeah it’s yeah I that’s why I said I love that clip because he’s not a magic guy but he’s hyping us up as much as anybody because holy smokes I mean it’s really cool to hear that kind of perspective um but yeah it’s it’s a great reminder of kind of where we are what we have available and again what that could potentially mean for free agents whether that’s this summer next summer whatever that might look like yeah I mean to us like everything that he mentioned is everything that we we always talk about right like and people like to talk about the magic and know they don’t spend money history has shown when the magic are good and the magic are ready to compete they will go out and spend money whether it’s you going out and getting Horus Grant back in the 90s going out and getting Rashard Lewis back in 2009 right like you know acquiring you know Gilbert arenus guy that was making a lot of money at the time and the magic felt like that was the the deal that they needed to to make to push this team forward making the trade for Vince Carter like when when the magic are are good and the magic are competitive like the Deval family has shown like hey hey if if they have a a reasonable um expectation that this team is going to be good and contend for a title they’re not afraid to spend money and we’ve talked about that we’ve talked about how great it is to live in in Central Florida and Florida in general with no you know state income tax and when you look at the practice facility you look at the facility that the magic play in you look at the roster and the future flexibility that they have and the the culture that’s being built here in the fan base like why wouldn’t you want to play in Orlando yeah and I I think maybe maybe the top of that list maybe outside of like Pao and the young Corp but I think outside of that I think Jamal Mosley is probably at or close to the top of the list for any you know potential free agent I we we’ve seen in his what has it been how many years he been here three now he’s been here three years man it’s crazy we’ve seen that over three years like there are players all across the league that adore him it’s it’s so cool and obviously we know that our own players adore him and so I I think yeah not it’s not to say that there any player the magic want they can get I don’t think it’s that way at all but I do think especially of that you know mid and younger generation of players I I I really think that Orlando is a very attractive place and I still think some veterans I think would be attracted to Orlando you know maybe in the same way that Joe inkles was um I think we’re at the point where the magic may not be a to get anyone they want but they are to the point where they can get a conversation with anyone that they want yeah I think it’s very very fair uh statement to say there and like I said we’re just a few short weeks away from finding out exactly what the Magic’s intents are and then finding out you know maybe which which fre agents they’re able to grab so uh this last segment I really really liked what Bobby Mark said here it’s it’s a thought that I had not come up with myself I had not thought about this until he said this but I think could generate some interesting conversation not just between us but maybe interesting um talking points for magic fans as we go into this offseason the one thing you don’t want to do is all of a sudden say you know what we’re good enough we’re just going to wait on internal internal development here and near this position next year in pal b car was like wait a minute we didn’t do anything at the trade deadline this year and we didn’t get do anything in offseason and now all of a sudden I’m out there G kind of on an island from on my own here um that’s going to be the uh that’s that’s we’re going to watch and see so that’s an interesting point you you stay put in the 2023 offseason and stay I mean you added Joe Eng Les that’s essentially staying put right I mean come on love Joe great guy funny guy that’s staying put right you get Joe Eng Les 2024 trade deadline you literally stay in Pat and here we are at the 2024 off season and I think he makes a great point I think not just for the development of this team you can’t stay put but but again I think he makes a great Point Pao banero I I I don’t think he’s at the point where he’s evaluating his future or anything but when it does come time for that he needs to be able to look back on his time here and say yeah the team decided to improve around me um and if we don’t do that this Summer that could be a problem now if you’re asking me I think there’s zero chance we we stay put like I don’t think that’s possible however this front office has surprised me before what are your thoughts about the magic potentially staying this offseason there’s a nonzero chance I I wouldn’t say it’s incredibly likely but I would say there’s a nonzero chance that they just stand Pat and they could spin it in the sense of like hey this is how much we believe in you guys which is essentially what they did at the trade deadline right like hey this is where we are you know and at that time you’re like still kind of flirting with with being you know 500 it’s like hey this is where we are we think we can make a push look at the schedule coming up we believe in you guys we we know that you can get us there so on and so forth but then the flip side of that is like hey if you believe in us then continue to invest and make us better and help us make a real push and that’s where I think we are now this team and and this front office since they’ve taken over the last you know six seven years they’ve had more than enough time to sit and evaluate and to a certain extent clean up the mess of the previous you know regime here now it’s the point where we we’ve sorted to see their fingerprints on this team now I want to see their handprints on this team right I I really want to see what this philosophy and this um the thought process behind roster construction I want to see what that really looks like from this front office and you have all of the resources in in front of you you have all of the cap space you have all of your future first round picks uh you have the the Denver 2020 five pick you know there’s the potential for a pick swap in the future as well um you know depending on what happens like with Washington and Phoenix and all that kind of stuff now is the time to make that move right I think this team has been patient enough I think ownership has been patient enough and ultimately I feel like this fan base has been patient enough that it’s time for some payoff I’m not saying you go out and you use all of the cap space that you have and you go out and get a Paul George and you make this big splash and you mortgage part of the future but you can be reasonable with the resources that you have in place to really improve this team and step on the gas a little bit and push them along if this team is not contending for a top two three four seed next year in a real way like not oh we barely you know got homec court advantage and things change there’s always context and Nuance around each each season but we should be making like a real impressive contention for the upper echelon of the Eastern Conference next season or something went wrong yeah I I think for me what’s so interesting about this off season is that we have not seen Jeff welman spend money really like I mean if you think about who is on this roster it is players that were drafted or players that were traded for with some exceptions like I said a Joe Eng Les right like you go out and get him you know couple offseasons ago they signed B Bowl you know I mean like those kinds of things but outside of that I mean Gary Harris you know even he was traded for you know up and down this I won’t go through everybody but look at the roster I mean they’ve never really spent money and so the fact that the magic will at minimum have 30 million probably I mean could could be less but more than likely it’ll be around $30 million to spend and again could be upwards of 60 million that is so intriguing to me because I have absolutely no idea what to expect from them like it’s just it’s we this is Uncharted Territory and so like you said this is an opportunity for this front office to kind of grab this this thing by the Reigns and take it whatever Direction they want but ultimately I am 100% in agree with with Bobby marks like you cannot stay put this off season like moves have to be made if you’re asking me moves have to be made I don’t think they have to be these crazy sweeping moves where you’re trading a bunch of guys uh or you’re you’re like you said signing you know a Paul George or whatever but something has to change if if you go back if you run it back with the same crew next year I think that is a a horrible mistake but I I don’t believe that the front office is going to do that and and going back to like the money that they’ve spent like the biggest moves they made resigning Nicola vuvi resigning Marquel or extending marel Fulton extending Jonathan Isaac right like outside of that we haven’t seen them you know spend a a ton of money yeah exactly that that’s what I’m saying like they have not gone outside of us to spend extensive money and so they may have been responsible for extending Aaron Gordon I can’t remember if they were if if they made that deal but like they haven’t like gone outside of what was already here to to make a a big you know Financial investment in anybody exactly yeah so for me that’s that’s super interesting and again I have no idea what to expect but anyway that’s kind of the Bobby Mark stuff he did touch on some other things like I said free agents he talked about our 2020 three rookies you talk about a couple other things so uh obviously go check that out um maybe we’ll include a link to that in our you know the description YouTube description of this episode just so you can get the full context of everything he said but again wanted to kind of use that as our our blueprint for maybe some things the magic might do this offseason and so yeah an interesting conversation and again I just I don’t know what to expect here we are you know less than four weeks away from free agency and all those other things that I mentioned will be even sooner than that so be a very interesting and probably I would guess maybe a little bit of a polarizing time for magic fans over these next few weeks I think there’ll be a lot of disagreements on Twitter and stuff but hey grab the popcorn it’s going to be fun Aaron Gordon was John Hammond and Jeff W and I had to go back and because it’s been quite a quite a few years since that is happened but yeah the the Bobby Mark stuff always find that you know really interesting because he looks at it from like a financial you know aspect and not just in terms of like oh hey this is what they sort of need to do to to be a bit better there so yeah appreciate that always fun to to go through and and theorize a little bit you and I talked just before we started recording about how I’m I’m sort of already tired with the like oh should we sign this guy should we trade that guy just because not that I don’t like talking about that kind of stuff but when it comes to free agency or trades and the draft when you look at the possibilities the magic have this off season there is genuinely like a million different dire directions that they could go in and I I just want to see it happen like we’ve been talking about it it feels like since the trade deadline like hey are will we won’t we kind of thing and I just want to get down to like this is what they actually are doing don’t listen to what they say they’re going to do let’s see what they actually do that’s what I’m looking forward to here you and me both brother it’s GNA be wild all right Kevin I think that’s going to wrap this one up what do you say yeah let’s do it okay well appreciate Bobby marks for helping out with the content uh this episode really appreciate that again hopefully this week we’ll be uh drop you know jumping more into to the the draft uh content and and uh you know talking more about that as as we’re just about 3 weeks away from the draft now but that’s going to do it for this one for Kevin Tucker this 5-Year/130,000,000 for Franz Wagner
5-Year/107,500,000 for Jalen Suggs
In my opinion Franz is a max player. His efficiency has gotten scrambled because the offense has no Identity at PG.
Get us those shooters to spread the floor this year and not Paolo and Franz at
Point Forward
I'm hoping Dallas doesn't hold on to Gafford because he'd be tenacious to our Center position.
With Washington he played us HARD everytime.
Idc what anyone says, I want D’lo to the Magic.
