6th Pick, Charlotte Hornets | 2024 Mock Draft

happy Monday everyone welcome back into our gine city media mock draft for this year’s MBA draft joining me for the sixth overall pick representing the Charlotte Hornets Rod Boon I’m so excited to have you on again this year uh with another lottery pick are you ready of course I mean we do this almost every year feels like right little anniversary of the NBA draft uh last year Charlotte Hornets uh drafted Brandon Miller I think looking back at that season everyone’s going to be pretty happy with how that went he had a really good rookie season he looks like someone that you could build a franchise around he he was really really good um obviously the team would have liked to do a little bit better uh they need to hit again this year in the lottery even without some of that Lottery luck like I don’t think six is where they wanted to be in this pick but it’s where the balls dropped uh there a new front office in place there’s a new ownership it seems like they’re heavily involved in the decision- making there’s a lot of curiosity around around lamelo’s long-term Fit And so there’s so many things to think about when I throw this draft at you in terms of what the Charlotte Hornets want to do in the future what they’re looking like so I am going to throw it over to you to tell me who you think uh in this mock draft with who’s on the board who’s off the board you think uh the Charlotte Hornets are going to want to aim towards well it’s funny because you know you mentioned last year’s dra you think about it you know last year they’re at number two um behind the Spurs and we knew about obviously Wy going off the board number one but then it was the whole will it be scoot Henderson or Brendon Miller thing and the honet um Zer in on Brendon Miller that was obviously we see right now a very good pick for them because he could be a player who you definitely can build around for years to come at in this draft at number six I’m not sure if there’s a player who you can look to and say I can help build around that guy immediately so people who off the board so far going by who um is left if Reed Shepard from Kentucky has not been taking the top five picks to me he’s the guy a Hornets would select because they need a little bit of everything like the Hornets are one of those teams that you can’t just say okay we can be picky and choosy and we need a small fold or need a power you know backup power no no you need to get the best player available at that spot because even if it doesn’t fit on your roster per se you could always find a willing partner somewhere else on the league to be able to move that player and being somebody else who could help you out maybe right away so to me Reed Shepard um he’s a guy the Hornets obviously traded Terry Rosier to Miami um back in January it was so to be able to maybe not replace ter Roser but they need some more backup some more basically some guard depth you know they had Trey Man Behind lamelo Ball but as we’ve seen with lamelo last couple Seasons he’s been injured so you want to be able to build your guard depth so to me Reed Shepard kind of fits that Bild to be able to have somebody come in to be able to kind of knock down open shots help make the right play um move the ball a little bit and kind of just help you a little bit with your back Corp dep so to me from the Hornets and re sheers there at number six I’m grabbing him for sure so re Shepard is a shooting guard out of Kentucky uh it’s actually I saw that it’s his mom’s birthday on draft night so a good little present to him being drafted nice and early um he has a 42 inch standing vertical which is really good but more impressively uh is like a deadly shooter shot 52% from the three-point line in the 33 games that he played uh pretty good Defender the one thing that um is like the this is why he’s not going higher or this is his downfall or this is where he needs to improve well I guess you can’t improve in this but he’s a little undersized for like guard he’s six3 181 pounds um not really a primary ball handler but like you said like can come knock down some shots if he’s playing alongside uh a Terry man or a laella ball um does that scare you at all his just his I was going to say that was probably my only concern about that pick because the Hornets have again kind of been there before yeah with Terry Rosier having a a smaller kind of maybe like two guard alongside lamelo ball because lamelo ball you know look at his height his stature he can guard some of the bigger point guards some of the bigger um players in the back court but if you have these back courts where they may have guys who were six five six ticks and above in both positions it could be hard for re Shepard to be out there in the floor like not be liability defensively so that would have to be his his his I guess his one to and his definitely his Improvement Zone be to come out here and make sure that you can be a good Defender just hold your own because when you’re 63 somewhere around there playing a back court of you know guys who are who are 65 666 and Beyond 69ine Sometimes some of these guys um it makes it hard for you to be able to compete and be out there in crunch time so that’ be my biggest concern is his height um so but otherwise like you said intangibles um the biggest thing the Hornets need to me is again Beyond depth is some shooting you can never have enough shooting in the NBA because if you have guys like lamelo can break down the defense and get to the basket or create their own shots then somebody’s gonna be open at some point right so you pass the ball kick the ball to him knock down dead shooter that helps you immensely so to me again the size definitely concerns me but if he can be out there knocking down wide open shots that will help offset him on defense a little bit yeah that’s what I was going to say I think his like his deadly pullup three like the fact that he’s shooting over 50% from the three-point line in college has to like some somehow outweigh the fact that he’s 63 because you can’t change his height but you can continue to improve on that three-point shooting which is already really really great absolutely all right Reed Shepard going number six the Charlotte Hornets broad for the I don’t know third fourth fifth time thank you again for coming on and joining me in the mock draft me time you got it k
